MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – As per its tradition The Mirror has chosen its Best Worker for 2023. Nomatter Mwanyisa, the publishing company’s manager and Elizabeth Mashiri the deputy manager stand neck to neck as the best achievers for 2023. Giving a citation for the prizes at an impromptu gathering of staff today, Matthew Takaona said Mwanyisa has increased the company’s vigilance to its environment. He said this saw the company up to date with statutory requirements, staff welfare and communication with its key publics. Takaona however, said that the year remained difficult for The Mirror as it has been for all other media organisations due to a number of factors including economic hardships, social media and dwindling advertising revenue. “Mashiri who is responsible for the marketing portfolio held fort as economic factors continued to work against our favour. She is an achieve and must be hailed for making it possible for the company to just hold on,” said Takaona. He said that Elizabeth was particularly noticeable for successfully accomplishing her projects. Garikai Mafirakureva who is the editor of The Mirror was picked as the best journalist of the year. “Mafirakureva has the best trending stories not just for The Mirror but for any media house in the country. His stories made an impact and one story that comes to mind is former Minister Dzingai Mutumbuka’s US$600 000 Chisipite house debacle. His stories attracts international attention and they are among the most retweeted stories. “The stories tackle relevant issues and in particular the corrosive corruption that has brought Zimbabwe down to its knees. There are facilities there for roasting meat and liqour galore. There used to be an lndian guy called Jivan who sold cold beer at the railway corner outlet. And the police raided the imbibers, it being an offence to drink beer in public. But not anymore. And Jivan is dead. Drunks drink and pee and puke publicly in front of Gweru Rural Police Station. It's all good. The Midlands Hotel in Gweru is monumental. It's in Main Street. I hear Main Street has been changed to Emerson Munangagwa Road? But wait. There was a bar in Midlands Hotel called The Carousel. A place of class. A place of the high and mighty of Gweru, and anyone else who could afford it, and anyone else who qualified for the hospitality of Patrick Kombayi, the indefatigable owner of the Midlands Hotel. It was cool. The manager was a lady called Angie Barret. She would giggle girlishly and encourage patrons to purchase liqour. Angie Barret is no more. And the Midlands Hotel is now a brothel. There seems to be a link between the renaming of Main Street and the decay of Gweru. Reminisces of Gweru Written off, hospitalised 2 years, boy miraculously survive cancer From page 1 ELLEN MLAMBO MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – A former Africa University lecturer, Miriam Nyasha Kwari has an intriguing story to tell. After being written off by medical doctors, her son, Ryan Kwari (10) defied odds and survived leukaemia, one of the most lethal forms of cancer and she attributes the cure to a combination of a herb called graviola and modern medicine. Ryan who spent two years in hospitals, at the Avenues Clinic in Harare and at Medanta in India is now 20 years, healthy, fit, and waiting to join the University. The herb was clandestinely prescribed and administered by a Roman Catholic medical doctor whom Kwari interacted with as Ryan was hospitalised at Medanta in India. The sordid experience has turned Kwari into a firm believer in herbs and she advises people to make herbs an intrinsic part of their meals and diet. After heavy dosages of drugs and chemotherapy during high-risk treatment in 2014 Ryan slipped into a coma and could not move for three weeks. A Catholic doctor who regularly visited and prayed for Ryan at the hospital then suggested to Kwari graviola, a herb that had had a high success rate with patients. Desperate Kwari could not refuse any chance of bringing her child’s life back, she told Matthew Takaona of The Mirror in an interview this week. “The graviola was administered clandestinely of course and a week later, slight movements of his body could be seen, soon doctors told me that there was a recession in the cancer and Ryan could breathe on his own. The doctors at the hospital were not aware of the administration of graviola. “It was a miracle. After heavy dosages of drugs and chemotherapy, my son slipped into a coma. A Roman Catholic medical doctor who came and prayed for Ryan then suggested that I administer graviola, a herb that had high success rate with cancer patients and this was at a time when the hospital had completely stopped administering drugs to him because of his reaction to them and the worsening situation. “After a week we could see slight flicks in his body. He later started pulling off the oxygen mask. Doctors told me that the cancer was receding remarkably and once again Ryan could breathe on his own. He would cry and call for his father. He was moved out of the intensive care and to ordinary wards as his improvement continued,” said Kwari. The hospital waited for Kwari to get strong enough so that he could be put back on drugs and chemotherapy, but the Catholic doctor suggested that they take him back home and continue with graviola since the family had run out of money to keep him in India. They returned to Zimbabwe and Ryan’s cancer continued to recede until there were no traces of the disease. He went back to school and his cancer is completely wiped out, said Kwari. Leukemia which is a cancer of the blood or bone marrow is currently not curable. For children with acute lymphatic leukaemia, 90% can survive for five years, according to the American Cancer Society. Kwari attributes the miracle cure to graviola. The herb opened her eyes, and she strongly believes that herbs can be a strong compliment of modern medicine. She encouraged families to make herbs part and parcel of their food and diet. She said that a lot of ailments can be corrected or averted using herbs in foods and diets. Kwari who is a devout Catholic said God provided answers to all sicknesses through herbs. “God made me go through this to remind us that He created nature with all the answers we need for different ailments. The Garden of Eden did not disappear like we grew up thinking. It is still in and around us for a reason. “God created the garden of Eden with colourful fruits, the reds, green and the yellow. All greens are meant for the immune system and blood circulation. The reds help on palpitations, blood thinness and thickness. The yellows are meant for the stomach and digestion, and they help in the calming down of high acid levels. Having graviola in food, a pinch or as a drink is encouraging your entire system to become fully looked after,’’ said Kwari. Like Saul in the Bible, Kwari’s experiences saw her abandoning her teaching career and becoming a staunch campaigner for the use of herbs. She has opened a clinic in Marlborough, Harare and she is currently going around the country creating awareness on the role that herbs can play in people’s health. Kwari is not an ordinary herbalist, she actually went through a formal training in India for six months. Ryan’s cancer started off like a flue in 2013. He would cough persistently. Antibiotics prescribed by doctors would not work. “One day when we were about to leave for work, we noticed that Ryan had a swollen neck. We took him to a doctor, an x-ray was done, and the results showed that he had tumour, sitting in his chest and it had to be operated on. We went to Harare where a lot of tests were done before an open surgery was conducted to remove the tumour. Some stuff from the tumour was taken to South Africa for tests where it was confirmed that this was Leukaemia, Lymphoblastic lymphoma which is very difficult to treat,’’ she said.

Newly installed Masvingo Diocese head Bishop Raymond Mupandasekwa also attended the commemoration. Speaker after speaker described Bishop Nyandoro as an exemplarily leader. Bishop Mupandasekwa said the bishop has exceptionally executed his duties. “My uncle is a man of honour. He has worked with great honour. God has done great in his life. He has touched our lives. We are here to pray for him to continue doing God's work. “Whatever he does in his life is a directive from the Almighty God. We have been together for many years in the Ministry, and he has always stood tall. He is a man who is passionate about construction of the pastoral centre,” he said. Chiwenga, a devout catholic applauded Bishop Nyandoro for his visionary and spiritual leadership, and spearheading developments aimed at improving the country's food security. He donated 200 000 bricks towards the construction of a pastoral centre. "As Government, we want to thank Bishop Nyandoro for his spiritual leadership. A few days ago, I visited Driefontain Mission where there are massive agricultural projects which the Catholic Church under his leadership embarked on. “Such programs need to be applauded and supported as they are key to the development of the Midlands Province and the nation at large. With these developments, I have no hesitation of saying the Catholic Church has proved beyond doubt that its efforts to work with the Government are very visible and are bearing tangible fruits," he said. Bishop Nyandoro was born in 1968 in Gweru. He did philosophy courses at St. Charles Lwanga Major Seminary of Chimanimani, Manicaland from 1991- 1994. Nyasha Chabika (24) and Flora Tofa’s (24) lawyer told Magistrate Elizabeth Hanzi that the investigating officers are getting into the two girls’ mobile phones and sending messages to different platforms including Facebook. He alleged that the cops were also using the phones to beg for money from the two girls’ friends. Nyasha and Flora were ordered to leave their phones and passwords at the Police station for further investigations. Tatenda Nyoka asked the magistrate to remove the phones from the custody of the cops and hand them over to the clerk of court. The two girls’ sex tape taken at a house in Target Kopje went viral on social media attracting Police attention. Hanzi granted the order and told CID Law and Order to hand over the phones to the clerk of court. The female detective who is investigating the case was only identified as Detective Sergeant Shumba “Their mobile phones are being used without their knowledge and consent. They are on and active on Facebook as we speak. Their accounts are asking some friends for money and we don’t know if they have been hacked. Nyasha and Flora don’t have access to their accounts,” said Nyoka. Nyasha is a model and has appeared with socialites as businessman Tasanangurwa Marisa in music videos. Prosecutor Godknows Mugondo conceded that it is unconstitutional for the State to infringe on the women’s privacy. He did not oppose the application for the transfer of the mobile phones to the Clerk of Court. “This is unconstitutional and the State should not interfere with the privacy of the accused,” he said. Nyasha and Flora are charged with violating Section 13 (1) of the Censorship and Entertainment Act, Chapter 10:04 (publishing the video). It is yet to be established who if any between them published the video online. The two are out on ZWL$100 000 bail each. The matter failed to take off because the State is still conducting investigations. Magistrate Hanzi postponed it to January 18, 2023. The video was allegedly recorded in June this year at a party held at the late Simbarashe Langton Madima’s residence. Madima was a Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) law student. He died in a road accident that also claimed Afro-pop artist Garry Mapanzure in October. Police ‘invade’ gay girls’ privacy Flora Tofa and Nyasha Chabika.
The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 7 22 December 2023 - 4 January 2024 www.masvingomirror.com BY MUZODO NOBERT MUTARE A motor vehicle is as lethal as a loaded weapon. If in wrong hands,it has the potential to prematurely end the life of its driver or any other innocent person. Bad driving along our roads include speeding, overtaking error, following too close, driving under the influence of alcohol and using cellphones whilst driving .There are a number of legislative inactments which are in place to regulate motor vehicle's fitness, qaulifications for one to be a driver and proper road use.It is paramount to note that there are several factors one should consider before using a motor vehicle on any road. Factors include the road worthiness of the vehicle, the preparedness of the driver, the road condition, the whether condition among other host of factors. These factors have to be seriously considered by all road users such that passenger safety, pedestrian safety as well as the motoring public 's safety is assured. It is vital for wl road users to note that causes of road traffic accidents could be attributed to human error or mechanical fault. According to the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, ninety percent of known causes of road traffic accidents are due to human error thereby leaving out a small percentage to other known causes such as mechanical fault ,eg as brake failure. This calls for a change in attitude on the part of human element.Education through awareness remains a vital cog coupled with road engineering but to spice it up human compliance is a necessity. Therefore ,killing bad driving on our roads has to be each and every driver's job. Road users must take heed of all information fed to them which awakens them to proper road use for the prevention of road traffic injuries and deaths.Speeding is one such error that thrills but kills.Experts agree that speeding increases chances of road accident as well as the seriousness of the resultant crash. The higher the speed the more the likelihood of a car crash as well as the seriousness of damages to property and injury to human beings. Interestingly,as one's driving speed increases ,the distance covered during travelling also increases .Resultantly, this has a bearing towards the driver's reaction time and causes most drivers to engage in unspeakable struggles to bring the motor vehicle to a halt since speeding increases the distance needed to stop the vehicle. The ensuing struggle to bring the vehicle under proper control is a mamoth task which requures extra physical and mental stamina from the driver.Sadly, chances of avoiding a crash under the given circumstances are slim. After observing the imminent danger, the speed and gear being travelled at will not be good enough to bring the car under control. Therefore, drivers need to take heed and engage a cautious speed. After the occurrence of a road traffic accident,we always wonder as to why the police labour to reconstruct the scene of a road traffic accident as they draw the sketch plan of the accident. This is done to establish if there is any blameworthiness on the part of the driver. The law expects all road drivers to drive with due care and attention.Where there is no due care and attention, the law then alleges that the driver exhibited some negligence by failing to avoid the occurence of an accident .According to the Road Traffic Act ,Chapter 13:11 and the Road Motor Transportation Act,Chapter,13:17 there are number of offences that can be preferred against erran drivers, especially after an an avoidable accident. These include driving without due care and attention, negligence driving, reckless driving to mention just but a few. There are speeding offences as well as passenger carriage offences. The intention of the law is to promote individual as well as general deterrence on errant drivers. However, deterrence alone without compliance does not avoid occurrence of accidents .Drivers need to avoid speeding at all costs. Travelling at excessive speed in given circumstances is an offence in most countries around the world .In Zimbabwe ,speeding is regulated by the law. There is a speed limit allowed by the law for road vehicles. This limit is set by relevent bodies either at local or national level. During festive seasons such as christmas holidays, volumes of both human and vehecular traffic inreases as people will be travelling for different purposes. It is the same time of the year that a lot of lives are lost due to road traffic crushes caused by speeding .Public Service Vehicles ,buses in particular, are usully seen flying past other road users .The speed will be akin to that of an electric train. This is made worse by poor road conditions which currently characterises our roads.Loud cries by desperate and overloaded passangers fall on deaf and stubborn ears of seemily drunken drivers. Prayerfully, passengers glue themselves to their seats ,watching helplessly as the bus crashes ,killing most its passengers. Not only do passengers plead with speeding drovers but some are shamefully heard cheering speeding drivers sighting being delayed. This is uncalled for,its a bad behaviour on the part of passengers. To curb the manace of speeding, the The Ministry Of Transport And Infrastructural Development saw it fit to come up with a law that limits speed of Public Service Vehicles through a speeding device.Statutory instrument 118 of 2023 makes it mandatory for all Public Service vehicles to be fitted with speed limiters and monitors.Bus operators whose drivers are accelerator happy will be regulated to a speed of not exceeding 100 km/h. This move must be applauded as one of the most effective way of ensuring safety on our roads.Experts agree that speed reduction by motorist has a remarkable bearing towards road accident reduction. The relevent law enforcement agents must play their vital role of enforcing compliance. Our police is empowered to detect ,inestigate and prevent all road accidents and enforce laws that ensure proper road use.The Traffic Safety Council promotes road traffic safety through education, publici as well as training, especially defensive driving. This festive season ,like any other season, our roads are going to have a high volume of motoring public. The high volume itself serves as an early warning sign to all of us that if we do not exercise due care and attention on our roads we end up adding up to the statistics of road carnage. One defensive driving instructor once opined ,that driving is an art which requires perfection and this art enables one to be able to drive a motor vehicle safely from one point to the next irregardless of how bad other road users will be. Our highway code reminds us that Zimbabwe is a cattle country. This calls for drivers to keep a proper look out for animals on the road .Those who did science agree that a tarred road absorb heat by day and emit the same heat by night.Cattle being cattle are attracted to this warmth by night hence the need to drive at a safe speed always. It is not surprising to hear a black cow narrative in sole party accidents. In addition to this,it has to be anticipated that by day cattle prefer to graze by tarred road side. Common sense, though not common to many, has it that animals are animals and lack human instincts and therefore subjectively extreme care is called for along our highway.Drivers are to drive cautiously and keep a proper look out. A good driver must plan his journey on time and make himself acquainted with the terrain he is likely going to vavigate. The geography of each region in Zimbabwe makes it unique and a prior knowledge of the road terrain makes one a safe driver. As we drive,we meet law enforcemnt agents they must act as tour guude to you. This applies to both public transport and private transport. In addition to familiarisation, one should avoid over familiarisation too. This causes drivers to forget about dangers that may emanate from other road users like broken down vehicles blocking free passage. It is possible to safely drive through the meandering and sharp curved but scenic Nyanga,Vhumba and Chimanimani roads in Mutare.Holiday makers are attracted to Nyanga National park,Mutarazi falls Vhumba heights and the famous Leapard Rock Hotel. Though the idea of spending one or two nights from home is welcoming, danger lurks in these scenic steep ascends and descends ,calling for one to remember how to properly engage low gears since an ommission towards proper gear engagement invites for a conflict with the machine called a motor vehicle. The struggle that ensues in trying to bring the vehicle under proper control can only be narrated as a near death escape that is if one lives to narrate.A motor vehicle, being as lethal as as it known to be ,must be maintained in a serviceable condition, with essential components such as tyres, brakes, wipers, indi cators, horn all serviacable. This is good for all road users. As a good reminder to all, most accidents are avoidable if road users take heed of warnings to take exercise caution and be aware of hazards that are found on our roads such as potholes and flooded bridges In addition, bloodbath resulting from overtaking errors ,especially at curves ,prohibited lines, long chain of vehicles is discouraged .Taking heed of this call is a recipe for survival.Like our elders say he who gives you a warning about imminent danger is yours .Let's kill bad driving before it kills you or any other innocent person. Kill bad driving before it kills you
The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 8 22 December 2023 - 4 January 2024 www.masvingomirror.com The house belongs to Dr Mutumbuka - Registrar of Deeds From page 1 GARIKAI MAFIRAKUREVA The Registrar of Deeds Absolom Magwere has said unequivocally that Number 184 Rolf Valley Township belongs to Zimbabwe's first Minister of Education, Dr Dzingai Mutumbuka. He also says in no uncertain terms that the deed held by Jonah Ngome who sold Dr Mutumbuka's US$600 000 is fake and an imitation of Dr Mutumbuka's deed. He also conceeds that the changes to Dr Mutumbuka's deed so that it reads Jonah Ngome was done by fraudsters using computer database at the Deeds Office. There is more than meets the eye because High Court Judge, Justice Chinamhora went on to order for the eviction of Dr Mutumbuka inspite of this affidavit from the Registrar of Deeds. Also curious is that Ngome whose whereabouts are not known and has never come to court to defend his claim to the house was only 17 years old when he acquired the property. 17-year-olds require guardian support to acquire such properties. Ngome was born in Mundembe, Mutare on 29 December 1970 and the deed was transferred into his name on 30 June 1988. The number given by Ngome on the agreement of sale 0772242063 has not been reachable. The Sheriff initially declined to evict Dzingai Mutumbuka from his house until the outcome of an urgent chamber application by Mutumbuka at the Supreme Court. However, the urgent chamber application was referred back to Justice Esther Muremba at the High Court who asked Mutumbuka's lawyers to separate the hybrid case and resubmit but as they withdrew and tried to do so they were shocked that the eviction was effected inside 24 hours. Sawyer Mkushi is representing Dr Mutumbuka. Harrison Marange who 'bought' Dr Mutumbuka's House for $40 000 is being represented by Zvavanoda Law Chambers.

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 22 22 December 2023 - 4 January 2024 www.masvingomirror.com International News Trump’s creating just the kind of legal chaos he wants for 2024 Donald Trump’s request to the Supreme Court on Wednesday was perhaps his most brazen delay tactic yet. He urged the high court not to get involved right now in the question of whether he is immune from federal prosecution for alleged crimes committed while in office – his latest attempt to ask the legal system to effectively bend to his political will. The move echoed what Trump’s legal strategy has been in all of his criminal cases to date – to delay the proceedings, ideally beyond the 2024 election. It came less than a day after the Colorado Supreme Court’s stunning decision to bar Trump from appearing on the state’s primary ballot, a ruling that he is also expected to appeal to the US Supreme Court. The US Supreme Court is seen in Washington, DC on November 13, 2023. Trump asks Supreme Court to reject special counsel and stay out of immunity dispute for now That means that the nation’s highest court is poised to consider next year whether Trump can be prosecuted for crimes committed after the 2020 election and whether the actions he took in office can bar him from being on the ballot again in 2024. It’s just the kind of chaos where Trump thrives – and finds a way to turn the tables to his advantage. “He feeds on grievance just like a fire feeds on oxygen. And this is going to end up as a grievance that helps him,” former Trump Attorney General Bill Barr, who is opposing Trump’s 2024 candidacy, told CNN’s Jake Tapper when asked about the Colorado ruling. On Wednesday, Trump’s lawyers asked the Supreme Court to reject special counsel Jack Smith’s request to bypass a federal appeals court and take up the case deciding if Trump, as a president, is immune from charges related to election subversion efforts after his 2020 loss to Joe Biden, a decision that could ultimately shape the former president’s legal fate. The speed with which the Supreme Court takes up the case, which has been paused while the immunity question is being decided, will determine whether the case begins in March 2024, just before Super Tuesday, as Judge Tanya Chutkan has planned – or if the case gets kicked closer to or after November’s election. It’s hardly the first time Trump has turned to the Supreme Court. After his election loss in 2020, he asked the justices – three of whom he appointed – to help overturn his defeat, and he publicly expressed his displeasure when they swiftly dismissed a lawsuit challenging the election results. Now Trump, the front-runner for the GOP nomination, is looking for help from the Supreme Court in his 2024 campaign – just weeks before the first votes are cast in the primary. The dualtrack Trump litigation puts the court – and the country – in an unprecedented and chaotic position that is sure to inflame the partisans no matter how the court rules. Trump’s GOP rivals once again defend him against the legal system The Colorado ruling, where a 4-3 majority found that Trump engaged in an insurrection and was not eligible to appear on the state’s primary ballot because of the Constitution’s 14th Amendment, once again drowned out any other news involving the GOP primary, where candidates are facing a narrowing window to gain on the former president. It’s the same scenario that played out following each of Trump’s four indictments, when any attempt by one of Trump’s rivals to gain the spotlight was met with the force of the unprecedented criminal charges against a former president. Some of Trump’s opponents used the news to make arguments about Trump’s electability, but they once again rallied to Trump’s defense against the country’s justice system, joining Trump’s allies to criticize the Colorado ruling. Nikki Haley arrives for a town hall event in Agency, Iowa, on December 19. What Trump’s 2024 Republican rivals are saying about the Colorado ruling Even former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who has defended the special counsel’s charges against Trump, said that the courts should not be deciding Trump’s electoral fate – the voters should. Biden didn’t weigh in on the Colorado ruling specifically Wednesday – but he did take the opportunity to accuse Trump of participating in an insurrection. The president’s comments were a reminder that 2020 will be a key part of any Trump-Biden rematch – even if the campaigns themselves wish to focus on other issues. “I think it’s self-evident” that Trump is an insurrectionist, Biden told reporters upon arriving in Milwaukee Wednesday. “Whether the 14th Amendment applies, I’ll let the court make that decision,” Biden said. “But he certainly supported an insurrection. There’s no question about it. None. Zero.” Hear Christie's reaction to Colorado Supreme Court's Trump ruling 01:25 - Source: CNN Delaying past November is the ultimate goal. If Trump were to lose on the question of presidential immunity at the Supreme Court, it clears the pathway for the special counsel’s January 6, 2021, trial to begin in the spring. It’s why Smith asked the Supreme Court to take the case even before a federal appeals court in Washington, DC, hears the matter. Waiting for the appellate court to decide a matter that is all but assured to be appealed to the Supreme Court anyway could push the federal trial well past the scheduled March 4, 2024, date that’s now on hold. Trump’s lawyers have not hid the fact that they’d like to push that federal trial – and the other criminal cases that are looming – beyond the 2024 election, where, if Trump wins, he could pardon himself. “Not surprisingly, former President Trump’s opposition focuses on the timing of the Court’s review, and not the inevitability of having the court resolve whether he is immune from criminal prosecution eventually,” said Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at the University of Texas School of Law. In their filing opposing Smith’s request, Trump’s lawyers conjured up all the outrage they could at Smith’s desire to push up the timeline, suggesting the special counsel was seeking to have the court make a decision “with reckless abandon.” “The Special Counsel urges this Court to bypass those ordinary procedures, including the longstanding preference for prior consideration by at least one court of appeals, and rush to decide the issues with reckless abandon,” attorneys for Trump wrote. “The fact that this case arises in the vortex of political dispute warrants caution, not haste,” Trump’s lawyers added. A pivotal role for the Supreme Court in 2024 In Colorado, meanwhile, Trump has until January 4 to appeal the state Supreme Court decision to the US Supreme Court. Trump’s lawyers aren’t planning to file their Supreme Court appeal this week, according to two sources familiar with the matter. But once Trump’s attorneys do appeal, the issue will be in the hands of the Supreme Court. Whether that happens before or after the high court hears the question of presidential immunity remains to be determined. The two cases mean that the Supreme Court, like it or not, will play a key role in the 2024 election. The court could decide that Trump is immune from prosecution while president, freeing him of some of the criminal charges he faces and giving him a runway to act as he pleases in a possible second term. Or, the high court could decide that Trump can, in fact, be removed from the ballot as the Colorado Supreme Court did, inviting other states to do the same and potentially depriving him of a path to the White House. It’s also possible – perhaps likely, even – that the court lands somewhere in between those two poles. But every action the high court takes, no matter how small or procedural, is going to come under intense scrutiny. And Trump’s action Wednesday shows he’s going to try to work the high court just as he has bludgeoned the legal system for decades in New York and Washington, skirting and blurring the lines as both a real estate developer and then as president. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa International news Page 23 22 December 2023 - 4 January 2024 ww.masvingomirror.com Scientists successfully replicate historic nuclear fusion breakthrough three times Scientists in California shooting nearly 200 lasers at a cylinder holding a fuel capsule the size of a peppercorn have taken another step in the quest for fusion energy, which, if mastered, could provide the world with a near-limitless source of clean power. Last year on a December morning, scientists at the National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California (LLNL) managed, in a world first, to produce a nuclear fusion reaction that released more energy than it used, in a process called “ignition.” Now they say they have successfully replicated ignition at least three times this year, according to a December report from the LLNL. This marks another significant step in what could one day be an important solution to the global climate crisis, driven primarily by the burning of fossil fuels. NIF's target chamber is where the magic happens -- temperatures of 100 million degrees and pressures extreme enough to compress the target to densities up to 100 times the density of lead are created there. NIF's target chamber is where the magic happens -- temperatures of 100 million degrees and pressures extreme enough to compress the target to densities up to 100 times the density of lead are created there. For decades, scientists have attempted to harness fusion energy, essentially recreating the power of the sun on Earth. After making their historic net energy gain last year, the next important step was to prove the process could be replicated. Brian Appelbe, a research fellow from the Centre for Inertial Fusion Studies at Imperial College London, said the ability to replicate demonstrates the “robustness” of the process, showing it can be achieved even when conditions such as the laser or fuel pellet are varied. Each experiment also offers an opportunity to study the physics of ignition in detail, Appelbe told CNN. “This provides valuable information to the scientists in addressing the next challenge to be overcome: how to maximize the energy that can be obtained.” Unlike nuclear fission — the process used in the world’s nuclear plants today, which is generated by the division of atoms — nuclear fusion leaves no legacy of long-lived radioactive waste. As the climate crisis accelerates, and the urgency of ditching planet-heating fossil fuels increases, the prospect of an abundant source of safe, clean energy is tantalizing. Nuclear fusion, the reaction that powers the sun and other stars, involves smashing two or more atoms together to form a denser one, in a process that releases huge amounts of energy. NIF's target chamber is where the magic happens -- temperatures of 100 million degrees and pressures extreme enough to compress the target to densities up to 100 times the density of lead are created there. US scientists reach long-awaited nuclear fusion breakthrough, source says There are different ways of creating energy from fusion, but at NIF, scientists fire an array of nearly 200 lasers at a pellet of hydrogen fuel inside a diamond capsule the size of a peppercorn, itself inside a gold cylinder. The lasers heat up the cylinder’s outside, creating a series of very fast explosions, generating large amounts of energy collected as heat. The energy produced in December 2022 was small — it took around 2 megajoules to power the reaction, which released a total of 3.15 megajoules, enough to boil around 10 kettles of water. But it was sufficient to make it a successful ignition and to prove that laser fusion could create energy. Since then, the scientists have done it several more times. On July 30, the NIF laser delivered a little over 2 megajoules to the target, which resulted in 3.88 megajoules of energy — their highest yield achieved to date, according to the report. Two subsequent experiments in October also delivered net gains. “These results demonstrated NIF’s ability to consistently produce fusion energy at multi-megajoule levels,” the report said. There is still a very long way to go, however, until nuclear fusion reaches the scale needed to power electric grids and heating systems. The focus now is on building on the progress made and figuring out how to dramatically scale up fusion projects and significantly bring down costs. At the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, US climate envoy John Kerry launched an international engagement plan involving more than 30 countries with the aim of boosting nuclear fusion to help tackle the climate crisis. “There is potential in fusion to revolutionize our world, and to change all of the options that are in front of us, and provide the world with abundant and clean energy without the harmful emissions of traditional energy sources,” Kerry told the climate gathering. In December, the US Department of Energy announced a $42 million investment in a program bringing together multiple institutions, including LLNL, to establish “hubs” focused on advancing fusion. “Harnessing fusion energy is one of the greatest scientific and technological challenges of the 21st Century,” said US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm in a statement. “We now have the confidence that it’s not only possible, but probable, that fusion energy can be a reality.” Ella Nilsen and René Marsh contributed to reporting. GIVING VOICES TO THE PEOPLE Page C2 22 December 2023 - 4 January 2024 www.chipingetimes.co.zw By Alphious Mugari Peer pressure refers to the process by which members of the same social group influence other members to do things that they may be resistant to do. It often involves conformity, where the person changes their behaviour, values, or attitudes to align with those of their peers. Peers play a large role in the social, physical, and emotional development of children and adolescents. Generally, the term peer pressure is used when people are talking about behaviours that are not socially acceptable, such as drug abuse, bullying, vandalism, and engaging in pre-marital sexual activity. Negative peer pressure has detrimental effects on an individual’s mental, emotional and physical well-being. On the other hand, positive peer pressure encourages personal growth, social integration, and development of healthy relationships. This article will focus more on negative peer pressure and how to deal with it. People give in to negative peer pressure for a variety of reasons. Individuals with low self-esteem, poor family support, conflicts at home, and other psycho-social problems, may succumb to peer pressure to fit in, or feel accepted by their peers. Others worry that if they don’t go along with what everyone else is doing, they’ll be labelled or isolated. There are others who just give in to pressure simply out of curiosity. Just as the saying goes, ‘human beings are social beings,’ most people have a strong desire for social validation and fear of rejection. Consequence of Negative Peer Pressure In most cases, negative peer pressure results in anxiety or depression. Trying to adapt to pressure from peers, especially when it goes against a person’s own values can be mentally and emotionally exhausting. Cognitive dissonance or psychological discomfort emanates from inconsistences between one’s beliefs and their behaviours. Negative behaviour changes can also result from negative peer pressure. Peers might encourage someone to start acting negatively, and engage in disorderly behaviours such as bullying, truancy and stealing. Friends may influence each other to partake in risky behaviours such as, underage drinking, experimenting with drugs, reckless driving, or unsafe sex, all of which usually results major health and legal consequences. Most young people engage in gender based violence to prove their masculinity to their patriarchal peers. Negative peer pressure can derail young people from academic responsibilities. An individual may start neglecting schoolwork, skip classes, or engage in cheating, which can damage their educational outcomes. Constant comparison to peers, and feeling like an outcast if they don’t conform to their social group can decrease someone’s self-esteem, leading to a negative selfimage and diminished self-worth. Peers that obsess over appearances can make their colleagues to experience feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction with their looks. In response, they will be indirectly forced to change their appearance to fit in, and feel valued. This may result in eating disorders (anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa) in an attempt to feel accepted by colleagues. Others may end up resorting to unsafe body altering supplements or pills for weight loss or gain. The pressure young people face to conform can persist into adulthood. Negative peer pressure in adults often includes risky behaviours. Adults usually experience peer pressure at work as they are compelled to dress, behave, think or have a lifestyle that matches their workmates. They can also feel an internal pressure to do what their colleagues consider normal, which can put them at risk for addictions. Some of the addictions that may be resultant of succumbing to negative peer pressure include gambling, food, internet, shopping, and sex addiction. Dealing with Peer Pressure There are various strategies that can be employed in dealing with negative peer pressure. Dealing with peer pressure can be difficult, but through adoption of evidence based practices and commitment, peer pressure can be very beneficial as it can influence positive beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviours. Young people must be taught to set healthy boundaries in social groups to avoid negative peer pressure. This can be achieved through communicating their personal beliefs and values to their peers. The boundaries should be clearly set in such a manner that their colleagues know that the friendship may be compromised if they keep on insisting on certain behaviours. Planning ahead also helps in managing negative peer pressure. This can be done through anticipating situations with negative peer pressure, and preparing how to deal with it. The plan can include preparing an excuse for avoiding certain behaviour which an individual may not be comfortable doing, such as drinking alcohol at a party. Developing self-confidence and assertiveness plays a significant role in resisting negative peer pressure. Through recognising their strengths, talents, and accomplishments, children can develop selfconfidence. Generally, children who feel good about themselves are less vulnerable to negative peer pressure. Parents, guardians and teachers must therefore foster assertiveness, and self-confidence among children, and young people. Assertive people are able to confidently say ‘NO’ to anyone who forces them either directly or indirectly to behave in dangerous or inappropriate ways. They also have good emotional self-regulation which helps them to stick to their own values and control thoughts, emotions and manage current behaviours towards long term goals. Children must also be taught at an earlier age on morality (Unhu/Ubuntu) to be able to manage negative peer pressure. Children must be taught that their beliefs, values, and behaviours must be centred doing what is right in every situation as well as respecting elders. This helps them to resist peer pressure even if they meet new friends or they get in new environments. Rather than worrying about the effects of their children's friendships, parents must focus on creating a positive, supportive home environment. Children and young people must also be taught on choosing friends, and social groups that respect their personal beliefs and behaviours. They can also have an accountability buddy with similar lifestyle goals who helps them to be always on track especially in social groups. They can share their values to their accountability buddy and ask them to help them stay on track. The fact that everyone is doing something does not make that thing right, young people must therefore be guided by what is right rather than what others are doing. It also helps to avoid getting in situations which may exert negative peer pressure on someone. Parents on the other hand must also know the friends of their children and also encourage their children to communicate their experiences and feelings. They must also teach their children to say ‘No” to anyone who wants to extern negative peer pressure on them. Educating children and young people on the negative effects of peer pressure also helps them to know the potential consequences of engaging in potentially harmful activities influenced by negative peer pressure. Understanding the risks and implications of certain behaviours can help children to make informed decisions and resist the pressure to behave in certain ways. Young people can also be taught on engaging in alternative activities that are positive and fulfilling. The alternative activities help to redirect their focus away from negative peer pressure. This can be achieved through exploring hobbies, sports, clubs or community organizations that reflect their interests and values. The alternative activities also help them to find like-minded individuals and build stronger support systems that provide positive peer influence. In conclusion, negative peer pressure is a prevalent issue affecting countless individuals, particularly during adolescence and young adulthood. Through understanding the consequences of negative peer pressure and implementing preventive measures, young people can resist negative peer pressure and be empowered to make independent and healthier choices. Parents and teachers must also create an environment that nurtures individuality, foster resilience and promote positive relationships. This will ultimately enable children to better resist negative peer pressure and thrive.
