Tuesday 1 March

In celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday later this year, at today’s
social event we will be making crowns fit for a King or Queen
After this we’ll be having a fun quiz
(hint: brush up on all things royal!)

Doors open at 9.40

New Premises
We’d like to remind our members that, from and including the April meeting, our
monthly meetings will be at the Arena until further notice. Same time, same dates.

Parking is very limited at the Arena so, if you plan to park at Dunelm (the Arena
has an arrangement with Dunelm), please allow yourself enough time to cross the
main roads from either there or Brussels Terrace. (It might be better and easier for
you to go by bus).

The address for the Arena is 1 Rutland Street Ilkeston Derbyshire DE7 8DG

We’re looking for someone with sufficient IT skills to produce our newsletter on a monthly basis.
If you’d like more information or would like to fill the vacancy then please have a word with our

present editor, Ann Shoebridge.
Please be aware that it’s not essential for the newsletter to appear in its current format.

Could you be a museum volunteer?

A new tea room opens at the award winning Erewash Museum on Easter Saturday
and volunteers are needed to staff what is expected to be a popular feature.

The Victorian-themed Old Stables Tea Room is part of the all new learning, com-
munity and exhibition centre development at the museum – completed thanks to a
Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant – and all will be showcased for the first time to
the public at a launch event on Saturday 26 March.

Now the museum is actively recruiting volunteers for the tea room. Volunteers will
help serve tea and coffee and pre-prepared cakes. No cooking skills are neces-
sary, just a friendly personality and a willingness to undergo some simple training
for using the cash till and food hygiene

The tearoom will be managed by the Friends of Erewash Museum and staffed en-
tirely by volunteers.

To find out more about volunteering in the tea room, email Volunteer Coordinator
Rebecca Buck: [email protected] or call 0115 907 1141.

Residents will be able to try out the new team room at the Victorian-themed launch
event to celebrate the completion of the HLF development on Saturday 26 March.
To find out more about the event visit: www.erewashmuseum.co.uk

Erewash Museum is just off the High Street in Ilkeston town centre, a short walk from the Market
Place. Admission is free and it is open Monday to Saturday during school holidays between
10am-4pm. For more information contact Erewash Museum 0115 907 1141 or email muse-
[email protected] or www.facebook.com/ErewashMuseum.

I CAN

I remember the corned beef of my Where biscuits for pennies were sold
Childhood, Do you think I'm a bit too nostalgic?
Or is it....I'm just getting Old?
And the bread that we cut with a knife, Bathing was done in a wash tub,
With plenty of rich foamy suds
When the Children helped with the But the ironing seemed never ending
housework, As Mum pressed everyone's 'duds'.
I remember the slap on my backside,
And the men went to work not the And the taste of soap if I swore
wife. Anorexia and diets weren't heard of
And we hadn't much choice what we
The cheese never needed a fridge, wore.
Do you think that bruised our ego?
And the bread was so crusty and hot, Or our initiative was destroyed?
We ate what was put on the table
The Children were seldom unhappy, And I think life was better enjoyed.

And the Wife was content with her lot. Author, Unknown...
If you can remember those days...
I remember the milk from the bottle, Continue to enjoy your Retirement &
GOD BLESS YOU.
With the yummy cream on the top,

Our dinner came hot from the oven,

And not from a freezer; or shop.

The kids were a lot more contented,

They didn't need money for kicks,

Just a game with their friends in the
road,

And sometimes the Saturday flicks.

I remember the shop on the corner,
