At IITM, Ananthu was well known for his writing
and debating skills. He later obtained M.S. from
Stanford in Management Science and Eng g. (Opera-
tions Research). Work ed with Xerox and Esso in
USA. Returned to India in 1969, giving up his
green card and passport, with the intention of dedi-
cating his life to social service. In 1976, met and
married Jyoti who had similar ideals. Opted not to
have children so that they can pursue this ideal.
Jyoti and he spent 14 years among Gandhian work-
ers. Also set up a Study Circle in IITD for investi-
gating the link of science with spirituality and
social consciousness, under the aegis of Prof.
D.S.Kothari.
In 1991, they shifted to a small hamlet in TN, but
not far from Bangalore. Created a Tr ust called
Navadarshanam, where like-minded idealists can
lead eco-friendly lives in a forest-like setting. T he
community lives off-grid, in homes made from
compressed mud blocks, with rain water harvesting
and self-sufficiency in basic needs.
After the death of his wife in 2008, Ananthu shift-
ed to their Gur u’s ashram in Beas, Punjab, where he
is doing intensive research on the science-spiritual-
ity connection.

ALIND Switchgear Division, Kerala from 1965 to
1988; joined as a design engineer and rose to the
position of Divisional Chief Executive.
From 1988 to 2003, Nayar worked for Alstom T&D
France in top management positions like Vice
President (Global Sourcing) , Vice President
(Global Industrial strategy) and Vice President
(Change Management). From 2003 to 2011 he was

After retirement from Alsthom, CMA has been
activ e as the Tr ustee of Kerala Inter national
Centre, Trivandr um, a think- tank on inter national
affairs and also as a Member of “Thought Leader’s
council“ of IITMAA.
Aravindakshan married Meena Devi in July 1971

Chandy was the 1965 winner of Siemens Medal for
merit at IITM. He enjoyed playing hockey for the
Institute team. After graduation, Chandy stayed
behind at IITM to successfully build a pulse-code
modulator under Prof. Seinecke’s supervision.
He left for USA in August 1965; completed M.S. in
Electrical Engineering in Brooklyn Polytechnic
(1966) and PhD in Operations Research at M.I.T
(1969). Chandy then worked at IBM Scientific Center
f o r o n e y e a r a n d j o i n e d U n i v e rs i t y o f Te x a s, A u s t i n i n
1970; was there as Professor till 1987. Chandy then
became Professor Emeritus at California Institute of
Te c h n o l o g y a n d w o r k e d t i l l 2 0 1 4 .

awards and recognitions from: Computer Measurement
Group-1 (1985); IEEE-3 (1990,1996, 2017);
ACM-3 (2019, 2013,2014); National Academy of
Engineering-1 (1995); and IITM Distinguished
Alumnus 2018.
Chandy has published 150+ papers, 4 books on
Queuing networks and Performance Modeling;
Distributed Simulation; Distributed Systems; Earth-
quake Monitoring; Sense & Respond Systems.

the UK for a two-year apprenticeship and Diploma
in Business Management.
Back home in 1967, he worked with Corporates in
the field of Po wer Distribution & Transmission,
managing large turnkey projects in India, Mid-
dle-East and North Africa. In 1988, Pradeep joined
the Finnish Company Wartsila as MD - India;
retired in 2003. He was conferred the Order of The
White Rose of Finland by the President of Finland.
Pradee p was Chair man-Wester n Re gion of CII and
President, Bombay Chamber of Commerce & Indus-
try and also Independent Non-Executive Director on
over 25 Boards. He has been an Executive Leader-
ship Coach since 2004. Mallick is currently
engaged in social causes like girl child education,
women-empowerment and senior citizen care.
Mar ried Veena in 1970; resides in Mumbai. Two
sons, Dhiraj and Dhruv, live in Califor nia and
Va n c o u v e r. O n e g ra n dd a u g h t e r. Fo n d o f t ra v e l l i n g ,

Jamshedpur until 1969, when he migrated to USA
to work for Lone Star Industries, CT until 1974.
While working, he joined Brooklyn Polytechnical
Institute for his MS in Operations Research. He
then moved to Hartford Insurance company till
1976; during this tenure he got his MBA(Finance)

worked for Olin Corporation and Great Northern

In 1985 he started his own business ventures –

c o m p u t e r h a r d w a r e a n d s o f t w a r e , S y Q u e s t Te c h n o l o -
gies (1988-93) for customised programs for
business; and Aztech Mortgage Corp, a fiduciar y
(1992-93).
His altruism extended to starting Aleem General
Hospital in his native village, run by his doctor
b ro t h e r. H e i s s u r v i v e d by h i s w i fe D r. A r u n a
Trehan (mar ried in 1974), son Omar r Syed Aleem,
and three granddaughters.

Esmail was a Gymnastics enthusiast and represent-
ed IITM at Inter IIT meets at Bombay, Khara gpur
and Madras.
He started his career with Bombay Oxygen Corp in
April ‘65 as Asst Engineer; was involved in Design
and Installation of various equipments and reloca-
tion of partial plant. Left for USA in August ‘67
and g raduated in MS from Villanova Univ ersity. He
then worked for FMC Corp (‘67 to ‘71), Sun Ship
Building (‘72 to ‘82). Newport News ShipBuilding
(‘82 to ’96), Kvaerner Shipyard, various consult-
ing companies including KBR Engineering, Jacobs
Engineering (‘96 to 2013).
During his long stint in Ship Building Industry and
Consultancy, Esmail designed various ship systems
on tankers and container ships, conducted testing of
equipment and systems during ship construction and
sea trial, worked on various equipment and systems
on submarines and aircraft carriers and designed
and participated in testing of the main engine. He
also designed modular equipment packages, pressure
vessels, etc. and was involved in Plant Layouts.
Married to Sakina (1967); has two daughters, one
son, three grandchildren. Lives in ………? and
enjoys traveling, gardening.

After being Head Boy and recipient of Academic
Roll of Honour at Delhi Public School, New Delhi,
Ramesh joined IITM and stood first in Mechanical
Engineering. He won many debating competitions at
I I T.
Ramesh joined IITD as Associate Lecturer for 6
months and in July '65 joined the DCM/Shriram
Group as Senior Mana gement Trainee. He spent 14
years in various functions in the industr y. Mov ed to
Nigeria 1979-84 as MD of two Plastics Packaging
Companies; returned to Delhi and started 2 new Di-
visions for Inalsa Ltd., manufacturing Small Home
Appliances/FHP motors and Flexible Stainless
Steel Hoses. Sold both businesses in 1999; later he
moved to IT H/ware.
Retired in 2012 as Exec. Vice-Chairman of Intex
Te c h n o l o g i e s ( I n d i a ) L t d . E n g a g e d s i n c e t h e n i n
advisory assignments in Manufacturing Cranes, AC
components, etc. He was a member of many
C o m m i t t e e s o f C I I , F I C C I , M A I T, I C E A a n d
CEAMA.
Married Usha in 1971. They have two sons, Sumer
and Saket, two granddaughters and a grandson.
Currently lives in Delhi. Fond of traveling,
walking, music, reading and keeping up with old
friends.

presented invited papers at several international
conferences, and, he was an external examiner for
several doctoral dissertations in USA and India.
He had also presented invited lectures at several
Indian Colleges and Universities.
Married to Bharathi, he has a son, Kartik and
d a u g h t e r, R a n j a n i , a n d t w o g ra n d ch i l d re n . H e i s
currently settled in Virginia, USA
.
Prabhakaran continues in his passion, that is,
teaching and writing articles. He had also written
short stories, poems for Bhavan’s Journal. He
keenly explores the spiritual realm of God and
Life.

An outstanding ‘Debater’ during IIT days and pop-
ularly known as ‘SID’, he won several individual
and team trophies, along with his batch-mate
Ramesh A Vaswani.
After graduating in 1965, SID was educated at
C r a w f o r d I n s t i t u t e o f Te c h n o l o g y a n d I m p e r i a l
College London and spent a year at the Science
Policy Research Unit at Sussex. He then joined the
D e p a r t m e n t o f S c i e n c e & Te c h n o l o g y, G O I . S u b s e -
q u e n t l y, D r. S i dd h a r t h a w a s a s s o c i a t e d w i t h C S I R ,
ISRO and DRDO, New Delhi in various top posi-
tions. He was also Secretary of the Science Adviso-
ry Council to PM and Consultant – UN Environ-
ment Programme.
Retired from DRDO in 2004 as Emeritus Scientist;
since then SID has served on various UN Commit-
tees and been associated in India at senior posi-
tions with MEA for Export Control Systems, Na-
tional Institute of Advanced Studies, Aeronautical
Society, United Ser vice Institution, Educational
Board at the ‘Current Science’, Indian Academy of
Science, Zaheer Science Foundation and National
Maritime Foundation.
SID married Gita in 1977 and the couple continues
to live in Delhi. SID continues to be active profes-
sionall y.

Basu John was the Headboy at St. Bede’s High
S c h o o l b e f o r e j o i n i n g I I T M a d r a s f o r h i s B . Te c h
and was active in college athletics. After graduat-
ing with the Governor’s Gold Medal from IITM in
1965, Basu did research at Schneider Optischer
Werk e in Bad Kreuznach, Ger many. He later
returned to Chennai and received his doctorate in
Optics from IIT Madras and also started his
working life as a Reader at IIT Madras

when he took over the running of the family
business. He was the Managing Partner of Klein &
Peyerl, one of the oldest Photographers and Block-
mak ers in the countr y. He also entered the IT field
in the mid-eighties when he started Mindspace, a
corporate IT consultancy. Mindspace helped set up
and run the computer lab and the first computer
courses at Loyola College, Chennai.
He was also a photographer of high repute and after
the Gujarat Earthquake, raised funds for the
victims through a series of photographic exhibi-
tions across the countr y.
