A note from Mr. Walters

Ours has been a journey that began with tentative steps perhaps, but one
that has taken us to remarkable heights. Congratulations, we are very

proud of your accomplishments! You are ready, willing and more than able
to grasp the torch that we bestow upon you. Yours is the future and on

you our world will come to depend.

May your years ahead continue to be characterized by kindness, empathy,
compassion, and a willingness to take risks.

May you always lead by example, work hard, and play straight.
May your successes be many and your tribulations be few and far between.
We wish you everything that you so richly deserve in the years ahead - it

has been an honor and a privilege watching your progress and success!

8th Grade

Through the Years

We started our journey at OVS in Kindergarten, with Alli, Asa, Caleb, Clarabel, Gabe, Issac, Jack, Jakobee,
Lindsey, Lexi, Logan, Nick, Rhylee, and Tommy. Our teacher, Mr. Martin, sang us songs about haunted

basements and getting kidnapped by clowns. We spent our time in the loft, on the rug, and outside. We have
lots of fun memories from this year, like when Caleb puked all over a table and everyone’s papers, and when

leprechauns came and spilled the trash and left glitter all over the floor. Tommy left and Carter came
halfway through the year.

Gabe and Rhylee left over the summer of first grade. Mrs. Young would let us play with shaving cream on
tables. Frozen came out that year and we spent a lot of time singing “Let It Go” over and over. She brought
us to her camp on the lake for a field trip, where Jakobee nearly drowned and dragged Nick with him. We read

a book called Stone Soup and had everyone bring in ingredients to make it ourselves.

In second grade, Mrs. Sweeney-Dodge was our teacher. We would always argue over who got to play with her
hair as she read aloud to us. This year was filled with memories about Lexi. Jakobee threw a pencil and it

landed in her leg, leaving a piece of graphite and a scar that’s still there today. On April Fool’s Day, Jack took
advantage of her extremely large fear of spiders and put a large fake spider in her desk. One of the more
memorable incidents was the year-long feud between Lexi and Alli. The two would argue over every little
thing and absolutely despised each other. Thankfully, the fight has simmered down over the years.

In third grade, we were the top class in the state. Mrs. Cecil made sure each and every one of us was trying
our best. She would always complain about how her computer ran slower than “frozen molasses running

uphill”. The year started with 3 new students - Cayden, Elijah, and Gabe. We always did typing tests - which
we’re thankful for now, but not so much at the time. We always played the Oregon Trail game and watched

our classmates die off.

Fourth grade was undoubtedly our worst year. In mostly unsuccessful attempts to get us to behave, Ms.
Borowski treated us with knickknack bins, lucky chance tickets, and daily GoNoodle breaks. We used to fight

over who sat at the empty desk in the corner. The school got an erosion table and we spent a lot of time
playing with it in the gym. That year we started the ski program and went to Fort Ticonderoga. Aaron came

towards the end of the year.

21 - - - OVS Yearbook 2021

The summer before fifth grade, Matt came and Elijah left. Mrs. Darley taught us science with memorable
experiments- growing beans, measuring shadows, making mini ecosystems, and putting together rubber-
band cars. We earned Darley Dollars and then had monthly auctions where we could ‘buy’ posters, pencils,
erasers, and other nicknacks. We always fought over pillows and stools and broke way too many fidget tools.
After splitting into groups and reading different books, everyone created costumes and props and froze into
our favorite scenes like a wax museum. That year, we went to Green Mountain College, got absolutely soaked
in the rain, and found bugs and bacteria in a river. Aaron left the class in October, and we met with Luke at

Starbase.

We started sixth grade with Dominic and Paige moving in and Cayden moving out. We had ELA with Mrs.
Robinson, Math and Social Studies with Mrs. Eagan, and Science with Mrs. Volpe. That year we had I.S. with
mixed grades and Groups A, B, and C all causing chaos in different ways. We played intense games of Markers
in Advisory that usually ended with some sort of injury and dreaded Whole Group Advisory on Fridays. We went
to POKO in the fall, where we did teamwork activities, argued over bunks, and learned about the Underground

Railroad. In the springtime, we joined up with the then-fifth graders and headed to Boston to watch a
baseball game. Everyone ate way too much junk food, and the ride back was full of vomiting, thunder, and

failed attempts at sleeping.

Seventh grade started like every other year. Kestin and Luke arrived towards the beginning of the year while
Isaac left. Paige left and Taylor came in the middle of the year. We had ELA with Mrs. Robinson, Math and

Science with Mrs. Volpe, and Social Studies with Mrs. Eagan. That year we missed having mixed I.S. groups, but
still let out our energy in mixed advisories, which eventually ended up with getting Markers and Silent Ball
banned. We went to POKO for the last time in the fall. The girls stayed up talking too late and were told
several times to go to sleep. In March, as we all know, the schools shut down and we ended our school year
virtually. Those months were filled with reminders to turn on our cameras, the occasional pets showing up,
and Matt’s accidental blasting of music.

The summer of 2020 was an interesting one, but we came back to eight grade completely in person. Taylor
stayed home for homeschooling while the rest of us suffered through masks, social distancing, and a single

classroom. We coped with the new COVID guidelines by constantly going outside, or, at the very least,
pestering our teachers to go outside. Mrs. Eagan somehow managed to teach us ELA and Social Studies, Mrs.
Volpe; Math and Science, and Mrs. Robinson; Integrated Studies. In the woods we built forts that could easily
function as safehouses in an apocalypse, in the field we played football and soccer, and in the gym we played

basketball. We had to have our lunches in the classroom and took advantage of the opportunity to watch
movies while we were eating. A special thanks should go out to Ms. K for suffering through sweltering heat,

freezing cold, and lunches with us.

As our time at Orwell ends and we move on to high school there are some
things that we would like to leave behind for next year’s 8th graders.
First, Clarabel leaves Elaina her love of reading, and Kestin leaves her
intellectual curiosity.
Alli leaves her drawing skills to Rhylee Macedo.

To Hannah, Lexi leaves her horse riding skills.
To those who choose to continue playing their instruments, the 8th graders

leave their musical abilities and leadership roles in the band.
To Riley Babbie, Lindsey leaves her spot by the tree.

Gabe would like to leave Nick with his wealth of excuses.
This year, Luke proudly passes on the Munchkin dance to Jacob.

Asa would like Logan to have his dirty mullet.
Nick would like Logan to have the top half of the fort.
Eric will receive the bottom half of the fort from Carter.
To Jacob, Jack leaves his soccer skills, and Logan leaves his basketball skills.

Matt would like to leave his basketball skills to Eric.
Good Luck in your 8th grade year!!

The Way We Were

In Kindergarten!!

Jakobee was always getting down to
bizniss… in the mud.

Athletic Jack knocked the ball out of the
park with his smile.

Carter joined us late, but this kid was great!

Caleb played with a grin and threw up once
during math.

NIck, sensitive and shy, on the first day of
school he cried.

Gabe was sweet as maple and liked to write
on the table.

Lexi laughed like galloping horses in the
morning mist.

Lindsey, the OG elf of kindness.

Clarabel, little sprite, full of light, like a
firefly in the night.

Allison, sure and sweet, curious like a kitten
after a mouse.

Logan leaped, laughed, and loved to learn.

Asa, as thoughtful as a hummingbird
inspecting a plastic rose.
