fans who came to watch the action were treated to four days of scintillating golf, loads

In the end, it was India’s Arjun Atwal who hoisted the Seagram Trophy after
defeating defending champion Peter Hedblom of Sweden in a playo . e pair

through the eld, making up a seven-shot de cit with a superb closing round of 64 to
54-hole leader Hedblom’s 71.
Following scrambling pars on the rst playo hole at the par- ve 18th – where
Hedblom made a remarkable recovery after nding water with his drive – Atwal
triumphed with a par on the second extra hole, the par-three 17th, after his opponent
three-putted. is was popular Indian star’s second Malaysian Open title and third on

“I just felt free the whole round … my mind was at ease. I
think I had seven one-putts over the last seven holes. I reached
the 18th hole and had a 15-footer for birdie, and I instinctively
knew that I was going to make it,” said Atwal, who now lives in
Florida with wife Sona and their two sons, Krishen and Shiva.
“ at playo was something. Peter hit it into the water on
the rst hole and still made a par and I botched it as well and had
to make a putt from 15 feet to make a par myself. It de nitely
wasn’t pretty, but I got the job done in the end,” he added.
Now aged 46, Atwal professed his love for Malaysia and its
people.
“ ere is something about Malaysia I love. I have always
played well there. I can’t pinpoint a technical reason, but I think
it has got to do with the Malaysian people. ey just feel like
my kind of people … completely chilled out. You’d rarely see a
Malaysian in a rush or hurrying. I love that vibe,” he said.
Following the win, Atwal returned to playing in the United

e playo loss was heart-breaking for Hedblom as his birdie

“It was a good defence,” said Hedblom. “You are never happy
when you lose and I thought I had a good chance to win. I am
proud of myself for the way I defended my title and the putts I
holed coming in.
“It was unlucky to three-putt the last playo hole. As it was
getting dark, I started thinking of that and wanting to win it
rather than come back tomorrow. I stressed a little too much on
that rst putt and hit it too long and missed the one back … but
that’s the way it goes,” he added.

Why did Kota Permai decide to host the 2020 Malaysian

Tang Meng Loon (TML): Kota Permai has played host to
several other international events. Having played host to the
2008 Malaysian Open, we have been excitedly awaiting the
revival of our national Open. Its staging at our course does not
only invoke a sense of national pride, but it’s a testament to our
capability of hosting a tournament of such magnitude. Over the
last few years, we have embarked on enhancements to both the
clubhouse and course, and we have a spectacular team so we can
o er everyone an enjoyable and memorable experience.
What are the upgrades done to the golf course in preparation
for the national Open?
TML: e course is in great shape as is, and we are extremely
proud of it. In preparation for the 2020 Malaysian Open, we
have only embarked on minor upgrades such as replacing new
bunker sand at a few selected holes to enhance their aesthetic
appeal.
What are the targeted green speeds for the tournament?
TML: Well, we are looking at 12 feet on the Stimpmeter,
which I trust will provide adequate challenge for the world-class
professionals who will be here to take on the course.

HOLE 1
A generous fairway invites long hitters to go all out from the tees
for a chance to get on in two. Once the drive avoids the trees
and thick rough on the left and two large bunkers on the right,
par should be easily achieved. Grassy hollows on the right and
a bunker to the left guard the green, which slopes from back to
centre.
HOLE 2
Kota Permai’s famous signature hole is a superbly designed
dogleg left par-four, with water on the left and a lone pot bunker
in the middle requiring an accurate drive. e water cuts across
play just before the greensite and hugs the entire right edge of the
treacherously-sloped green. Over-clubbed approach shots might
end up in two bunkers lined by fan-shaped railway sleepers.
43
HOLE BY HOLE
HOLE 3
is long par-four is a tough test of ball-striking, with hidden
swales on the undulating fairway and a long strand of palm trees
along the left. ere are no bunkers on the fairway, which drops
to a lower level from the 100-metre point. e green is closely
guarded by three sand traps to the left, right and to the rear.
HOLE 4
is picture-postcard hole is arguably the toughest par-three
on the course. Water lurks on the right all the way and heavy
mounding lines the left side, while the large green is guarded by
three well-placed bunkers. e three-tiered putting surface has
some treacherous breaks, with a back left pin position making
for an extremely tough target.
44
HOLE 5
is interesting hole plays to a two-tier fairway, with the green
located at the end of the lower tier. e fairway is wide enough
but a well-placed bunker to the left and thick rough and palm
trees on the right could ruin any chance of nding the green in
regulation. Water runs along the entire right side but only really
comes into play on the approach.
HOLE 6
Kota Permai’s longest par-three with water on the left and
bunkers to the front and right combining to demand a solidly-
struck long iron or hybrid o the tees. e huge green may look
relatively friendly but is laced with some subtle slopes to make
three putts a distinct possibility, so take time to read the lines
correctly.
45
HOLE BY HOLE
HOLE 7
Long hitters can go for the green in two if they avoid the two
bunkers on the left and another on the right. is requires a
carry over water, while those who lay up have to be mindful of a
lone tree in the middle of the fairway at around the 110-metre
mark. e huge green has two distinct tiers and is well-protected
by bunkers.
HOLE 8
Rated as the toughest hole on the course and for good reason,
this long par-four is lined by pine trees and water along the right
and bunkers on the left. Two more bunkers await on the left less
than 100 metres from the green, while another well-placed sand
trap guards the front. e undulating putting surface has some
deceptive breaks.
46
HOLE 9
e front nine nishes with this challenging par-four, which
climbs uphill towards the clubhouse. e tee shot has to nd a
relatively small landing area, avoiding two deep bunkers on the
left and palm trees on the right. Two pot bunkers on the right
will trap under-hit approach shots, while the undulating green
will feed pushed shots into hollows on the left.
HOLE 10
e back nine starts o with this tricky par-four, where the tee
shot is blind if you are trying to nd the lower tier of the fairway.
Palm trees line both sides of the fairway and the only bunker is
behind the elevated and tricky green. Approach shots missed left
will wind up in thick rough, from where getting up and down
will be tough.
47
HOLE BY HOLE
HOLE 11
is may be the shortest par-four on the course but the elevated
fairway is tight with trees on both sides, especially along the
depression on the right where they serve to protect homes from
stray shots. e hole curves gently right to a small and narrow
green, which slopes away from the left bunker towards more
sand and thick rough.
HOLE 12
is dramatic par- ve plays downhill to the landing area, before
climbing steeply to a severely-sloped green. Out of bounds on
the right and dense trees on the left demand solid ball-striking
on the rst two shots, while the approach has to be deftly played
to avoid a nest of bunkers short and left of the green. Take care
on downhill putts as they may roll all the way o the putting
surface.
