Introduction















This has been a very successful year for IIUM Press. IIUM Press has expanded
significantly over the last twelve months and we have made a number of
publications of notable achievements. Major publishing that we recently
embarked on are progressing very satisfactorily. And many new opportunities
are opening up for us. We face a very exciting future

We are delighted and honoured to have presented Anugerah Buku Negara,
Anugerah Buku MAPIM-KPM and Best Journal Crème Award, the most
energetic publishing award, in a distinguished award ceremony for 2019.

None of this would have been possible without an active, supportive and the
generous efforts of IIUM Press staff and University Management as well, who
made IIUM Press an outstanding success.
In summary, I believe it has been a great year. We are satisfied with the


development of IIUM Press and are looking forward enthusiastically to the
year ahead.

IIUM Press










IIUM Press of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is one of the leading university

presses in Malaysia. Since its establishment more than three decades ago, IIUM Press has
published over 2000 scholarly books and journals in our selected subject areas across the

humanities and social sciences, combining cutting-edge scholarship with high editorial and

production values to produce academic works of lasting importance.


The IIUM Press is a global ambassador for IIUM, distributing our books and journals worldwide

each year. Malaysia, as part of the Malay World has a long tradition of learning and intellectual

debate in Islamic Studies.


IIUM Press is part of that tradition. As well as being a leading Malaysia academic publisher, we

aim to be the preeminent publisher of renowned books about Islamic Knowledge. Our

Islamization of knowledge books cover Islamic Finance, Islamic Banking, Waqf, History, Politics,

Literature, Language and Linguistic, Art and Architecture. IIUM Press also publish textbooks,
research monograph, reference works and cutting-edge series across our subject areas, and

reach an International readership.

Aims

MISSION

Towards actualizing the University's vision, IIUM Press endeavours seven missions that are:

1. To undertake the special and greatly needed task of reforming the contemporary
Muslim mentality and integrating Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences in

a positive manner.

2. To produce better quality publications by integrating the qualities of faith (iman),

knowledge (`ilm), and good character (akhlaq) to serve as agents of comprehensive and
balanced progress as well as sustainable development in Malaysia and in the Muslim

world.

3. To foster the Islamicisation of the ethics of Muslim academic and administrative staff

of IIUM, and certain aspects of human knowledge - particularly in publish in social
sciences and humanities - with the view to making them more useful and more relevant

to the Muslim Ummah.

4. To nurture the quality of holistic excellence publications which is imbued with Islamic

moral-spiritual values, in the process of learning, teaching, research, consultancy,
publication, administration and student life.

5. To exemplify an international community of dedicated intellectuals, scholars,

professionals, officers and workers who are motivated by the Islamic world-view and
code of ethics as an integral part of their work culture.

6. To enhance intercultural understanding and foster civilization dialogues in Malaysia as

well as across communities and nations.

7. To develop an environment that instills commitment for life-long learning and a deep

sense of social responsibility among staff and students.

dynamic and progressive role of the Muslim Ummah in all branches of knowledge and

Administration & Finance





The budget performance report shown the total of income and expenditure for IIUM Press for the
year 2019 is as follows:















































*balance C/F RM30,567.72



Budget distribution approved for IIUM Press is RM13,250.00 for the non-personnel item expenditures
operation budget for the year 2019. Due to the limitation of the budget, IIUM Press has to utilize more
than RM220,000.00 from IIUM Press Trust Fund 2019 to manage the publishing and operations.

The IIUM Press Trust Fund income come from the collection of sales from the IIUM Publications.

Organisation Structure










































The human resources have expanding and in 2019 we have received six (6) staff to manage and support


the publication office. Four (4) new contract staff was appointed for the IIUM Translation Book Project

and to assist production unit respectively. And another two (2) staff is transferred from CFS IIUM.


With the present number of staff, IIUM Press also have received three (3) new computers and a new

cubicle partition for the staff.

Editorial






Book Editing

The book's editor, in collaboration with the author, spends months helping guide the content

flow of the book and the language of the text, whipping the manuscript into readable and

publishable shape. At the same time, the editor is also working with his or her colleagues (as
well as the author) to come up with a brilliant title and subtitle that will entice readers to the

book. The book editorial process itself has several stages and the different members of the

editorial team perform different functions.

Book Production

After the manuscript leaves editorial, it goes into the hands of production. The steps of

production from edited manuscript to finished book involve a host of hands copy editing the

text, designing, and laying out the pages of the book, determining its size and page count,
working to get the cover of the book designed, and seeing the book through printing and

binding or e-book creation.

Arabic Book

In this section, some of the Arabic manuscripts was received from the local and international

publishers. The edited manuscripts will be turned into a book or a textbook. There is also a
mutual agreement (MOU /MOA) established between IIUM Press with Arabic publishers in

publishing the manuscript into book or textbook.

Journal





An academic or scholarly journal is a periodical publication in which scholarship relating to a

particular academic discipline is published. Academic journals serve as permanent and

transparent forums for the presentation, scrutiny, and discussion of research. They are usually
peer-reviewed or refereed.


IIUM Journal Publication is the publishing arm of the International Islamic University Malaysia

(IIUM). IIUM promotes research and education by efficiently coordinating the publication of
research projects; maintaining strategic alliances with distributors and other publishers; and

regularly participating in book exhibitions and sales. To this date, IIUM Journal Publication has

published more than 830 issues of various journals in 2019. There are 28 categories of Journals.

Marketing





Book Marketing & Publicity

While the book is being edited, designed and produced, the marketing unit working to prepare

for launching the book into the marketplace. The marketing unit works with the editorial unit

to develop tools (like seasonal book catalogues) and marketing strategies and plans to help get

the books in front of the account book buyers. A book's online marketing and social media also
usually falls under the marketing unit.

The book shop "sell in" IIUM Press publications

to the many and varied places who carry
books—from small independent bookstores to

wholesalers and book vendors who supply

other types of retailers, like gift stores.


All of these processes work toward the

"launch" of the book into the marketplace, and many (sales, publicity, marketing) continue

afterward as well to help "sell-through" the book—that is, get it out of the bookseller's hands

and into the hands of the consumer.

(MABOPA) WAS OFFICIALLY REGISTERED ON 14
JANUARY 1969 TO REPRESENT LEGITIMATE
PUBLISHERS’ INTEREST. MOST OF THE MEMBERS
ARE ACTIVE AND PUBLISH A WIDE RANGE OF
PRODUCTS INCLUDING TEXTBOOKS, REVISION

COURSE BOOKS, WORKBOOKS, ENCYCLOPEDIAS,
READERS, MAGAZINES, AND ALSO MULTIMEDIA
PRODUCTS.





IIUM Press has registered as MABOPA members in June

2019. As the publisher, there are a lot of benefits while

being a registered member of MABOPA. Many activities, publishing programme organized and
information regarding the books can be shared with the team.



IIUM Press also can develop the publishing networking to promote IIUM Press publication and

copyrights trading throughout the association members. The cooperation and coordination
with all Malaysian publisher will ensure the books activity in Malaysia spreading widely.

Malaysian Scholarly Publishing Council (MAPIM)



Malaysian Scholarly Publishing Council (MAPIM)

is the fellowship body under the auspices of the

Jabatan Pendidikan Tinggi (JPT), Kementerian

Pendidikan Malaysia (KPM) established to
empower the scholarly publication in Malaysia.

MAPIM members consist of the publishers of

public universities and scholarly publishers of

non-public universities. This Council is
responsible to coordinate the activity, develop

and improving the publishing activity, and manage

the Anugerah MAPIM-KPM award annually.



Director IIUM Press was appointed as the MAPIM Treasurer for the period of 3 years effective
from January 2019. The treasurer is responsible to coordinate and manage the MAPIM Trust

account for the activities, programme and expenditure organized by the members. Treasurer

also responsible to prepare and reported the annual expenditure to the committee members.

Kuala Lumpur World Book Capital 2020 [KLWBC2020]




On 19th September 2018, Director-General of
UNESCO Audrey Azoulay named Kuala Lumpur,

the capital city of Malaysia as the World Book

Capital for the year 2020. Kuala Lumpur was

selected on the recommendation by the World
Book capital Advisory Committee, comprising

representatives of the International Publishers

Association (IPA), the International Federation of
Library Associations (IFLA) and UNESCO based on

applications received from cities all over the

world.



IIUM Press has taking this opportunity to promote
IIUM publication and grab a chance in supporting

the event by the activity and programme

collaboration. With the initiative from the YBhg

Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Razak (IIUM Rector), IIUM Press has come with the project

“IIUM Translation Book Project”. The ideas are to translate 100 of book titles from various
international publishers.



With the proposed budget of RM 1,722,050.32, IIUM Press had established the Translation
Project Unit. This unit is responsible to coordinate and manage the translation project and

dealing with the international publishers. Despites from “buying”, the unit also "sells" books—

or, more specifically, the right to publish a book in alternate formats, different languages, and

to adapt it for different media).


The objectives of the IIUM Translation Book Project are as follows:


 To increase interest in translation and reading activities among the students,
 academic communities and public.
