2 About the Society

History
The Hundred House & District Improvement Society was formed in the late 19th
century with the aim of improving standards of land and animal husbandry.
The Show and Sheep Dog Trials have been run almost continuously for over 60
years, forming one of mid-Wales’ premier Community Agricultural events.
This will be the 3rd year at the Show’s new ‘Home’ of Lower Llaneon Farm,
courtesy of Stephen Williams, and is sure to build further on its new foundations.

Meetings
As a Member, or prospective Member, you are cordially invited to come along to
our regular meetings in Hundred House Village Hall, held at 7.30pm on
Thursdays and provisionally planned for:- September 12th 2019, January 30th
2020 (AGM), April 30th 2020 & July 30th 2020. Other occasional social events
are held.

Safety Notice

The ONLY access to the Show Field is from the A481 road from Hundred
House to Fforest Inn. There is NO access via the farmyard or adjacent gate
off the road to Franksbridge. The Society’s Committee kindly request that

Showgoers only use the official entrance to avoid a significant Health &
Safety danger, both to themselves as well as other road users.

Show Day
Berwyn Jones and Clive Nixon are the joint Show Secretaries, in charge of its
layout and smooth-running. It’s a big responsibility and one that’s not always
fully appreciated. The Society and its Committee extend their thanks.
Another very important job is that of Gate & Parking Management. The current
Chair, Dan James, takes responsibility for this task and will be canvassing for
help. It takes many people through the day to fulfil this task and if you would be
able to give an hour of your time, he – and the entire Committee – would be
most grateful. Please contact him if you’re able to help.
Many thanks go to our Section Secretaries, their Stewards and helpers who
spend many hours before, on and after Show Day in making it an enjoyable
event for all to enjoy.
The Society is grateful to Ann, Dennis, Gaynor Beth & Sharon, Marie, Alex,
Sue Davies, Sue Williams and Wendy for distributing the Show Schedules and
Tickets to the Society’s Members. And lastly, in this digital age, we’re indebted
to Cherry Tooley for managing our Hundred House Show Facebook page.

THRESHING MACHINE DEMONSTRATION
Kindly provided by Mike George & Keith Williams

Founded in Aberdeen in the late 19th century, Robert Garvie &
Sons were the foremost producer of threshing machines until well
into the 1950’s. Their equipment was used to remove seeds from
the stalks and husks of grain by beating the plant to make the
seeds fall out. The first such machines were used from the late
18th century, before which the job was done by hand, using flails –
an extremely laborious and time-consuming task which
accounted for about 25% of farm labour. Unemployment and
hardship caused by this early mechanisation resulted in the
“Swing Riots” of 1830 when farm labourers smashed threshing
machines and threatened the farmers who utilised them.
However, the machines continued to be improved; from being
driven by horse, to steam and then internal combustion.
Eventually their function was coupled with that of the
reaper/binder (used to first cut and then bundle the crop) and thus
developed into the modern day Combine Harvester.
Hopefully, Mike Davies will kindly bring along his early single-
cylinder diesel Field Marshall tractor to power the belt drive.

Membership

The Society’s Members have traditionally been recognised by listing their names
and addresses in this Schedule, but Data Protection regulations mean that this is
no longer possible. Nonetheless, the Society relies heavily on their annual
subscriptions to secure its future and help it weather the ups-and-downs that
inevitably occur. The Society could not exist without their support.
Annual Membership fees are £5 Single 16 & over, £10 Joint/Family.

Please note that Members must show their Membership/Show admittance
tickets at the main gate to avoid paying the normal entry fee.

Sponsors

The Society is extremely grateful for the prize monies and other income received
from its Sponsors. Where directly associated with awards and prizes, their names
appear italicised and underlined within this Schedule. In 2018 contributions to the
Society’s general running costs were also gratefully received from:-
Brown’s Coaches, Brian Smith Builders & Contractors, Brown’s Character
Building, Powell’s Garage Knill (Presteigne) & Fforest Fields Campsite
Sponsors may also choose to place a display advert. Details are shown elsewhere

Liability Notice

All persons entering the Show Ground do so at their own risk. The Committee will
not accept responsibility for any accident, damage, injury or illness to spectators,

property, horse riders, horses, livestock or owners whatsoever, or loss of
property, exhibits or display materials.
