2 About the Society
History
The Hundred House & District Improvement Society was formed in the late 19th
century with the aim of improving standards of land and animal husbandry.
The Show itself has been running since the 1950’s with the Sheep Dog Trials
celebrating their 70th Anniversary in 2022. The Hundred House Show has a
strong claim to be mid-Wales’ premier Community Agricultural event.
2022’s Show
A full Schedule of events and entertainment are being provided for this first Show
Day since 2019, with the planned Programme appearing opposite. Full details of
the 70th Anniversary Sheep Dog Trials appear on page 4.
As usual, Berwyn Jones and Clive Nixon are the joint Show Secretaries, in charge
of its layout and smooth-running. It’s a big responsibility and one that’s not
always fully appreciated. The Society and its Committee extend their thanks.
Another very important job is that of Gate & Parking Management. The current
Chair traditionally takes responsibility for this function and Sharon Davies will be
canvassing for help. It takes many people through the day to fulfil the task and if
you would be able to give an hour of your time, she – and the entire Committee
– would be most grateful. Please contact Sharon directly, or Tricia the Show Co-
Ordinator if you’re able to help.
Many thanks go to our Section Secretaries, their Stewards and helpers who spend
many hours before, on and after Show Day in making it an enjoyable event for all.
The Society is grateful to Ann, Dennis, Gaynor Beth & Sharon, Marie, Sue Davies,
Sue Williams & Wendy for distributing the Show Schedules and tickets to the
Society’s Members. And lastly, in this digital age, we’re indebted to Cherry
Tooley who’s managed the Show Facebook page for the last few years.
Members who pay by Bank Standing Order
Almost everyone has continued their payment over the 2 years when Covid
meant that the Show could not be run. In recognition of this unstinting support,
these Members will receive 2 free tickets to donate to any relative, friend or
acquaintance they wish as a gesture of the Society’s gratitude.
Meetings
As an existing, or prospective Member, you are cordially invited to come along to
our regular meetings, generally held on Thursday evenings in Hundred House
Village Hall and provisionally scheduled for January (AGM), April , July and
September. Contact [email protected] for further information.

30THRESHING MACHINE DEMONSTRATION
Kindly provided by Mike George & Keith Williams
Founded in Aberdeen in the late 19th century, Robert Garvie &
Sons were the foremost producer of threshing machines until well
into the 1950’s. Their equipment was used to remove seeds from
the stalks and husks of grain by beating the plant to make the
seeds fall out. The first such machines were used from the late
18th century, before which the job was done by hand, using flails –
an extremely laborious and time-consuming task which
accounted for about 25% of farm labour. Unemployment and
hardship caused by this early mechanisation resulted in the
“Swing Riots” of 1830 when farm labourers smashed threshing
machines and threatened the farmers who utilised them.
However, the machines continued to be improved; from being
driven by horse, to steam and then internal combustion.
Eventually their function was coupled with that of the
reaper/binder (used to first cut and then bundle the crop) and thus
developed into the modern day Combine Harvester.
Hopefully, Mike Davies will kindly bring along his early single-
cylinder diesel Field Marshall tractor to power the belt drive.
