About the Society
History
The Hundred House & District Improvement Society was formed in the late 19th
century with the aim of improving standards of land and animal husbandry.
The Show and Sheep Dog Trials have been run almost continuously for over 60 years,
forming one of mid-Wales’ premier Community Agricultural events.
In 2017, and through the generosity of Stephen Williams, the Show was fortunate to
be offered a new ‘Home’ at Lower Llaneon Farm and this year will be building on the
successful foundation established last year.
Meetings
As a Member, or prospective Member, you are cordially invited to come along to our
regular meetings in Hundred House Village Hall, held at 7.30pm on Thursdays and
provisionally planned for:- September 11th 2018, January 31st 2019 (AGM), May 2nd
2019 & August 1st 2019. Other occasional social events are held.
Show Day
Berwyn Jones (01982-570219) & Clive Nixon (01982-570235) are the joint Show
Secretaries, in charge of its content and smooth-running. It’s a big responsibility and
one that’s not always fully appreciated. The Society and its Committee extend their
thanks.
Another very important job is that of Gate & Parking Management. The current
Chair takes responsibility for this task and will be canvassing for help. It takes over
20 people through the day to fulfil this task and if you would be able to give an hour
of your time, he – and the entire Committee – would be most grateful. Please the
Show Co-Ordinator if you’re able to help.
Many thanks go to our Section Secretaries, their Stewards and helpers who spend
many hours before, on and after Show Day in making it an enjoyable event for all to
enjoy.
The Society is grateful to Ann, Dennis, Gaynor Beth & Sharon, Marie, Alex, Sue
Davies, Sue Williams and Wendy for distributing the Show Schedules and Tickets to
the Society’s Members. And lastly, in this digital age, we’re also indebted to Katie
Barstow for managing our Hundred House Show Facebook page, which forms the
central repository for all our photos and public commentary.
Liability Notice
All persons entering the Show Ground do so at their own risk. The Committee will
not accept responsibility for any accident, damage, injury or illness to spectators,
property, horse riders, horses, livestock or owners whatsoever, or loss of property,
exhibits or display materials.

WHEELWRIGHTING CRAFT DEMONSTRATION
Sponsored by Jonathan (‘Ginge’) Allsop - Carpentry
Tyring a Wagon Wheel, with Michael Davies Llangyfrwys
Mike got into wheelwrighting through wanting to restore a couple of
old carts in dire need of new wheels. He asked the wheelwright at
Acton Scott Historic Working Farm for help, but although interested,
he just hadn't got enough time to make them. However, he told Mike
about the course that he’d undertaken to learn the skill and art of
wheelwrighting, and so Mike followed in his footsteps by enrolling at
Hereford College of Technology. Subsequently, the ‘Master’ semi-
retired and Mike now works alongside him at Acton Scott for two days
a week. Mike also receives many commissions to make and repair
wheels on his own account at home.
The demonstration is scheduled to take place at 4.30 pm.
Mike Davies (left), ably assisted by Stephen Williams, carefully lowers a pre-
heated iron rim onto a newly-repaired (‘felloed ‘) wagon wheel.
Acton Scott provides the opportunity to become familiar with the country life
of yesteryear. Its Historic Working Farm is a wonderful visitor attraction with
daily activities and special events. Traditional 19th century farm life unfolds
daily, with the land around being worked by heavy horses. Check them out

At night, I'll share them with my ted. Farewells said in pouring rain
I've left my Mum, she had to stay Gone to live in some strange place
I wish she'd come with me today. Hoping for a friendly face.
I've left my friends, and all I know
I wish I didn't have to go.

Membership
The Society’s Members have traditionally been recognised by listing their
names and addresses in this Schedule, but new Data Protection regulations
mean that this is no longer possible. Nonetheless, the Society relies heavily on
their annual subscriptions to secure its future and help it to weather the ups-
and-downs that inevitably occur, and the Society is ever-grateful for them.
Annual Membership fees are £5 Single 16 & over, £10 Joint/Family.
Please note that Members must show their Membership/Show admittance
tickets at the main gate to avoid paying the normal entry fee.
Sponsors
Our Society depends heavily upon - and is extremely grateful for - the support
of its Sponsors. Where directly associated with awards and prizes, their names
appear italicised and underlined within this Schedule. In 2017 contributions to
the Society’s general running costs were also gratefully received from:-
Brown’s Coaches, Brian Smith Builders & Contractors, Brown’s Character
Building, Powell’s Garage Knill (Presteigne), Fforest Fields Campsite, Wye
Jewellers and The Hundred House Gun Club (courtesy of G Price & H Evans)
Sponsors only may also choose to place a display advert. Details of the rates
are shown on page 27
