Le e From the Advise :

The years 2020 and 2021, for most, are referred to as the
“worst” because of all the challenges we have faced. However,
the 2021 school year will always be referred to as one of my
favorite years, and I have many people to thank for that. First
and foremost, I am truly appreciative and grateful for the
constant support Dr. Johnson, Mr. Fitzgerald, and Mr. Tobin
have shown me. You have been present at all of NHS’ functions
and your constant encouragement has helped me develop into
the adviser I am today. Tonight would not have been possible
without you, so once more- thank you.

As I wrote before, there are many individuals that I
believe deserve acknowledgement- 25 individuals, to be exact.
The senior members of Butler High School’s chapter of NHS
have, without a doubt, been a highlight of my year. I have
watched these students give up their time to serve the
community, tutor elementary-aged students, measure the
distance between seats, create fliers and promote fundraisers,
demonstrate maturity and integrity, and all during a pandemic.
We have laughed together, been humbled together, and grown
together. Thank you for thinking of the details that I overlooked,
for coming to each meeting or function with a smile on your
face, and for showing me the true definition of National Honor
Society’s tenets. It has been an honor to be your adviser. I hope
you always carry and display the attributes of your membership.
We did it, and we did it during a pandemic, so I know you can
continue to uphold the oath you made at your induction.

Tonight’s ceremony introduces 23 new members to the
feelings of pride and fulfillment that comes with National Honor
Society membership. These students will now have the
opportunity to distinguish themselves within the hallways of
BHS; they will promote kindness and serve as role models for
their classmates. They will serve the community and know they

have made a difference in the lives of their neighbors. They will
fill shopping carts at BJ’s as we prepare for our annual Food
Drive, laugh as they struggle to navigate the cart throughout the
store, and smile as they package boxes for Thanksgiving. They
will create Trivia questions and be able to tell a teacher,
“Wrong!” (for maybe the first time) on Trivia Night. They will
create rubrics for fundraisers, clean-up the town on Butler
Community Day, and will answer my numerous Google
Classrooms posts. They will attend monthly meetings and
become accustomed to the inevitable fact that I will follow up
with various points afterwards. They will laugh, take selfies, take
group photos, feel stressed, feel creative, but most importantly,
they will think it’s all worth it.

As an adviser, I have worked to be accessible and serve as
a mentor. I have brainstormed ways to execute fundraisers and
involve the community, as well as administration. I’ve stood
back and watched 25 seniors develop into responsible, young
men and women and 23 juniors articulate the ways they plan to
contribute to NHS. Although I’m proud of what was
accomplished, I have to acknowledge that it would not have
been possible without the four members of my executive board:
Ryan Curry, Gabriella Higgins, Shane Mola, and Cody
Schiffman. These students began fulfilling their duties
immediately upon election, and they learned from the start that
the work done behind the scenes is time-consuming and
necessary. Thank you for picking up the numerous pizzas,
bringing tape measures, understanding my thought-process,
and for always being willing and able to step in when necessary.
Thank you for completing this journey with me.

To the seniors of 2021, thank you for the legacy you leave
behind. To the juniors of 2022, thank you for demonstrating a
desire to carry on our vision. I’m excited to see what both classes
accomplish within the next year, and even more excited to see it
firsthand!
