Moving fallen residents is a regular part of the working
day for many healthcare professionals and the repetitive
nature of the work can cause serious back injury or
musculoskeletal disorders. The ELK and Camel inflatable
lifting cushions enable a safe lift for both professional and
patient and are a practical solution to a daily challenge.
The benefits of using the Camel and ELK:
• R educes worker injuries
• Lowers compensation claims
• Improves operation efficiency

This digital brochure has been designed to support,
not replace the manufacturers operating instructions
which should be read before using equipment.
Before commencing any moving and handling task,
an assessment of the person and environment should
be made by a competent person.

Protecting care workers

We understand that hazardous
manual lifting techniques, associated
with moving and handling can not
only be distressing and undignified
for the fallen person, but can
also increase the risk of injury to
healthcare professionals.

ELK

Lifting Cushion

The Mangar ELK and Camel
lifting cushions are practical,
efficient manual handling
products that are used in
emergency services and care
home settings across the
world. Inflated by an Airflo 24
Compressor, a fallen person can
be lifted in minutes.

Inflatable Lifting Cushions

Moving and handling injuries
account for 40% of sickness in
health and social care. The rate
of non-fatal injuries among
EMTs and paramedics was
found to be 34.6 per 100 full-
time workers per year, a rate
more than five times higher
than the national average for
all workers in the US.
(DOL, 2007)

Easy to Use

They are simple to set up and inflate at
the touch of a button, using an Airflo 24
compressor. The ELK lifts up to 444kg /
980lbs and the Camel 317kg / 700lbs.

Easy to Clean

Lifting cushions can be cleaned
using a detergent solution or
clinical wipes.

Easy to Transport

Lifting cushions are battery powered,
durable and lightweight, making them
easy to transport. They are easily stored
in an ambulance and can be charged
from inside a vehicle.

Inflatable Lifting Cushions

Key Benefits

Reduced risk of musculoskeletal injuries to
staff and the associated costs including:

• A gency staff to cover absenteeism.

• R ecruitment costs through staff loss.

• Compensation claims.

• Q uick access to outside areas and confined
spaces such as toilets, bedrooms and
hallways.

• A dignified lift reduces upset to the fallen
person and other around them.

• A nyone with dementia or a cognitive
impairment will remain calmer when
lifted with a lifting cushion than with other
manual handling devices.

Improved Productivity

Healthcare professionals who sustain
a musculoskeletal injury can become
resistant to further manual handling
tasks. A lifting cushion reduces the risk of
musculoskeletal injuries.

In a Senior Living Environment:

• Uninjured fallen residents can be lifted
without the need to wait for an ambulance.
This frees staff up to continue with their
duties, rather than spend time sitting with the
resident who has fallen.

• Residents who are uninjured could wait up to
seven hours for an ambulance.

• Improved wellbeing of residents
and their families.

• C ompleting a controlled, dignified lift reduces
the likelihood of a long lie on the floor and
increases the chance of a good recovery.

• F amilies of residents find using a lifting
cushion, particularly in public areas, a more
dignified way to care for their relative.

Inflatable Lifting Cushions

In an EMS Environment:

• O ne piece of equipment that can pick
anyone from the most fragile to plus size
people up to 444kg / 980lbs.

• Only two EMS workers needed to respond
to fallen plus size or bariatric patients.

• Using lifting cushions reduces the need
for multiple crews and vehicles to attend
fallen patients. This improves productivity
levels and helps services to achieve
response targets.

ELK

To maximize the life and
lifting performance of the
battery, fully recharge the
battery for 16 hours.

When the battery is
new, it will not reach its
peak performance and
capacity until it has been
discharged and recharged
at least 3 to 5 times.

Cleaning

Unless contamination is suspected,
periodic cleaning is all that is
recommended. The Airflo 24 should be
cleaned/disinfected as follows:

• U nplug the Airflo 24 from the battery
charger. Clean the external surfaces using
a non abrasive damp cloth with warm
water. Wipe dry thoroughly with a dry
towel before reconnecting to the battery
charger. Do not allow moisture to enter
any part of the compressor.

• Do not use solvent-based products.

Disinfecting

• P re-clean using a damp cloth and then
disinfect using a hard surface alcohol
impregnated wipe.

Airflo 24

Storage

When not in use, store in a dry place
together with these instructions. To
maintain the batteries, when being
stored for long periods, put the Airflo
24 on charge overnight every 3 months.
NOTE: Ensure that the batteries are fully
charged before storing the Airflo 24 for
long periods.

Maintenance

The Airflo 24 has been designed
to be maintenance free and
apart from replacing the battery,
the Airflo contains no other user
serviceable parts.

Keep your Airflo 24
charged and ready to go

For optimum performance, keep the
Airflo 24 fully charged so it is ready to use
whenever you may need it.

For emergency services install a stowage
board into your ambulance and click the
Airflo 24 into place whenever it’s not in use.
This not only stores your Airflo 24 safely, but
also keeps it on charge and ready to use.

Airflo 24

We can also supply in-vehicle chargers
for smaller emergency vehicles.
For senior living facilities, the stowage
board can be attached to a wall and
plugged into the closest mains point.
The Airflo 24 locks on and automatically
starts to charge – ready to be used
whenever required. Your Camel or ELK
can be hooked onto the bottom of the
stowage board for safe keeping.
