About

Kuala Lumpur International Choir Competition (KLICC) 2019 is the continuation of the
Kuala Lumpur International Choir Competition (KLICC) 2017, 2018 and Malaysia International
Choral Festival 2016. KLICC is an annual event which gathers the best choir teams of the world
in an annual competition to vie for the coveted title of International Champion. Organized since
2016 and consecutively held yearly till 2018, KLICC is the homegrown brand name of
International Choir Competition, proudly formed in Malaysia.

KLICC 2019 is supported by the Ministry of Education, The Department for Culture and Arts,
National Academy of Arts Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) and Kelab Belia Perkasa dan Prihatin .
KLICC features world class choir team with choristers and pianist or musicians performing
colourful variations of harmonious voices and music expression. This event has successfully
gathered a total of 28 choir teams representing 3 nations; Malaysia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
They will be involved in three categories of competition, namely the Children’s category, Youth
category and Open category.

The objective of this event is to establish Malaysia as hub for developing common interest in
promoting choir activity as means to instill positive self-worth in every participant, focusing on
life skills development, character building, self-discipline, leadership qualities and teamwork
plus exposure to international interaction and the fostering of a good value system.

This much awaited event is organized by Multi Empire Alliance Sdn. Bhd., the event organizer

since 2016 all the way till 2018. With the great support of esteemed organizations such as

The National Department for Culture and Arts, National Academy of Arts Culture and Heritage

(ASWARA) and Kelab Belia Perkasa dan Prihatin; the Kuala Lumpur International Choir

Competition 2019 is now back with loads of interesting performance; colourful voices and

creative repertoire to enliven the industry. We welcome choir lovers all around the world to get

together and celebrate this wonderful invigorating burst of youthful energy in our participants

of the KLICC 2019!

Salam Sejahtera dan Salam Negaraku,

Sesungguhnya saya amat berbesar hati kerana diberi peluang untuk memberikan sepatah dua
kata dalam buku program ini. Saya berasa sangat bertuah kerana dapat bersama – sama dalam
pertandingan Kuala Lumpur International Choir Competition 2019 (KLICC) yang bertemakan “
Let Your Heart Sing “, Pertandingan koir ini merupakan Program Jaringan bagi tahun keempat
yang dianjurkan oleh MEA dengan kerjasama pihak Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara
(JKKN).

Syabas dan tahniah saya ucapkan atas kejayaan penganjuran dan pelaksanaan pertandingan ini.
Penganjuran Pertandingan ini merupakan satu usaha yang baik dan bertepatan dalam
menyemarakkan kepelbagaian seni nyanyian berharmoni dari Malaysia dan pelbagai negara
khususnya negara-negara serantau. Saya juga difahamkan bahawa Kuala Lumpur International
Choir Competition 2019 (KLICC) menjadi satu platform yang baik untuk menyerlahkan bakat dan
kebolehan para peserta secara berpasukan dan pada masa yang sama ia dapat meningkatkan
kemahiran seni vokal peserta.

Pertandingan ini juga merupakan satu ruang dan peluang yang berperanan sebagai platform
pasukan koir dari Malaysia mahupun antarabangsa yang disifatkan sebagai jambatan
penghubung yang amat penting.

Inilah cara yang harus dilakukan oleh institusi pendidikan dengan penyertaan, penglibatan murid
dan pelajar dalam usaha menggerakkan negara ke arah pencapaian peringkat tertinggi serta
usaha ini juga sebagai pemangkin kecemerlangan bidang-bidang tertentu dalam pendidikan.

Akhir sekali, terima kasih saya ucapkan kepada MEA & JKKN atas sumbangan yang telah
dilakukan terhadap kualiti dan integriti dalam penganjuran Kuala Lumpur International Choir
Competition 2019. Terima kasih juga kepada semua yang terlibat termasuk para murid dan
pelajar yang terlibat sebagai peserta dan juga para pelajar yang membantu sebagai sukarelawan.
Teruskan usaha murni anda. Saya mendoakan kejayaan untuk Kuala Lumpur International Choir

Bagi pihak Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara saya ingin merakamkan setinggi-tinggi
penghargaan dan terima kasih kepada Kelab Belia Perkasa dan Prihatin serta Multi Empire
Alliance Sdn. Bhd. (MEA) di atas penganjuran Kuala Lumpur International Choir Competition
(KLICC) 2019. Sebagai sebuah badan yang bertanggungjawab dalam pembangunan dan
penyemarakkan seni budaya negara, Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara menyokong
penuh usaha Kelab Belia Perkasa dan Prihatin serta Multi Empire Alliance Sdn. Bhd. (MEA)
dalam penganjuran program bertaraf antarabangsa ini.
Kuala Lumpur International Choir Competition (KLICC) 2019 merupakan inisiatif penting
dalam rangka pembangunan seni koir terutamanya di kalangan generasi muda. Memasuki
edisi ketiga pelaksanaannya, KLICC Berjaya menarik penyertaan sebanyak 28 kumpulan
dengan penglibatan seramai 1,070 orang. Selain penyertaan tempatan, pertandingan ini
juga turut mendapat penyertaan antarabangsa daripada negara Indonesia dan Sri Lanka.
Pelaksanaan program ini memberi ruang ekspresi dan kreativiti di kalangan peserta untuk
berkarya dan berkongsi idea dalam melahirkan naskah bermutu tinggi.
Setinggi-tinggi penghargaan dan terima kasih saya ucapkan kepada semua yang terlibat
dalam merealisasikan pertandingan ini. Sesungguhnya usaha murni ini akan menerbitkan
kenangan manis buat semua dan menjadi kenangan zaman berzaman.

Salam Sejahtera and Welcome to all,
It’s my great pleasure to welcome all of our International and local guests and participants
to our Kuala Lumpur International Choir Competition 2019 or KLICC 2019. KLICC 2019 is the
continuation from Malaysia International Choir Festival 2016 or MICF2016. KLICC 2019 is
the fourth year for KLICC after the previous success of KLICC 2017, 2018 and MICF 2016.
This year, KLICC 2019 brings a large number of choir teams from local and international
choir teams such as Indonesia and Sri Lanka. This event is a collaboration together with
National Department of Culture and Arts, National Academy of Arts Culture and Heritage
(ASWARA); and Kelab Belia Perkasa dan Prihatin as joint organizer of KLICC 2019.
I would like to express my gratitude for the support from various organizations especially
the Ministry of Education Malaysia, Department of Culture and Arts (JKKN), National
Academy of Arts Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) for the venue sponsor and Kelab Belia
Perkasa dan Prihatin, and other sponsors which have been supportive in making this
prestigious event to reality. We are proud to announce that we have achieved the ambition
of making Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia as a preferred destination or ground for this choir
competition.
I hope KLICC 2019 will be an amazing and memorable competition to be enjoyed with lots

Adjudicators

DATUK SYAFINAZ SELAMAT
MALAYSIA

This celebrated voice specialist is a coloratura soprano. Her repertoire consists of arias by
composers such as Mozart, Puccini, Bellini, Delibes and Verdi. She has performed solo vocal
recitals in Malaysia, Germany, Spain, Monaco, Kazakhstan, Singapore and Korea. Syafinaz was
cast as the main character in Malaysia’s first Malay Opera entitled “Puteri Saadong” which
received an over whelming response
Syafinaz is also actively involved in the Malaysian contemporary music scene as a singer and
actor (in musical theater productions). She is a well-respected judge for singing competitions
such as “One In A Million”, “Akademi Fantasia”, “The Band”, Mentor and as well as choral
competitions. As a singer, she is well known for her versatility and capability in singing
classical, R&B, Pop and Jazz.
Besides singing Syafinaz is a voice lecturer at MARA University Of Technology (UiTM) Music
Faculty, and The National Arts Academy (ASWARA). She was invited to lecture at The
International College of Music (ICOM) for a few years. At the same time, Syafinaz is also the
Choir Director/Conductor for the Genius Seni Koir (formerly known as Permata Seni Koir) as
well as the advisor and Vocal Director of Koir Kebangsaan Malaysia (The National Choir Of
Malaysia).

Adjudicators

Syafinaz has produced and conducted numerous production for Koir Kebangsaan Malaysia
such as Koir Kebangsaan in Love with Peace, In Love With Rock, No Wrong Notes, W.A.J.A.H,
and WARNA to name a few. Last year, Koir Kebangsaan was given the privilage to perform
their concert “9 Koleksi Terunggul” in Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) and was shown on
television.

With Genius Seni Koir (Permata Seni Koir), Syafinaz had conducted their performences in
Malaysia as well as overseas such as in New York, Khazakstan, Austria, Dubai, Turkey and
China. She was also invited to conduct the Vienna Boys Choir during one of their tour in
Malaysia.

Among her achievements in the music industry are a Gold Medal for the
R&B/Pop/Rock/Contemporary category in the “World Championships Of Performing Arts”
in Los Angeles, USA, AIM Awards (Music Industry Awards) nominations, “Juara Lagu Muzik
Muzik” nominations. Syafinaz was awarded with “ASEAN Outstanding Business Awards
2014 in Asean Leading Performance Artist” by ASEAN Retail Chains & Franchise Federation
(ARFF). In November 2015 she was chosen by The Brand Laureate to receive the Grand
Master Brand Icon Leadership Award, Asia Pacific Brands Foundation.

A favourite performer at gala ceremonies, she performed for the closing of the ‘World
Economic Forum’ in Davos Switzerland, the World Expo in Zaragoza, Spain and sang for the
SEA GAMES in Vientiane, Laos. A familiar face at Fashion Festivals, her operatic prowess
never failed to enthrall the audience. She was invited to perform in front of Prince Albert of
Monaco in conjunction with Islamic Fashion Festival (IFF) in Monte Carlo, Monaco, and was
once again invited to perform for IFF at Astana, Kazakhstan. Syafinaz was also invited to
perform with The Romanian Radio National Orchestra, at the Malaysian Philharmonic Hall
(MPO).

During the President of The United States Of America, first official visit to Malaysia, Syafinaz
was specially chosen by the Prime Minster himself to perform for Mr. Barack Obama for the
State Banquet at the King’s Palace. And for Asean Summit 2015 gala dinner which was
attended by all of the Asean leaders, Syafinaz was once again invited to entertain them with
her powerful and soulful vocal.

In conjunction with Federal Territory Day 2018, Syafinaz was conferred the Darjah Kebesaran
Panglima Mahkota Wilayah (P.M.W) which carries the title Datuk from the King for her work
and passion in the music industry and education namely Permata Seni Koir and Koir
Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Dr. CASEY KOH
MALAYSIA

Dr. Casey Koh, also known as Dr Casey Broadway is best known for his work in musical theater
as a producer, music director, educator, performer and arranger. He is the founder of the
Broadway Academy in Malaysia and also the advisor and Founder of the Broadway Theater
Society Malaysia (BTSM).
Dr. Koh holds a PhD from ASWARA specializing in Voice and Musical Theater and has lectured in
several universities and colleges in Malaysia and abroad. He is also involved in the instrumental
scene as an instrumental soloist, orchestral musician and symphonic band conductor as well as
a chamber musician. Dr. Koh is currently the Chair of Voice and Choral Studies at The College of
Music Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University, Bangkok, Thailand and also is the Choral
Director and lecture at the National Arts Academy Malaysia, ASWARA.
Dr Koh is also the choir director and founder of the BAVE Chamber Choir, The BAVE Community
Choir, The Broadway Academy Show Choir and The Broadway Academy Children’s Choir. Under
his direction, the choirs have won several awards both within the country and abroad. Dr. Casey
Koh is also the one of the founding committee of the Asia Pacific Show Choir Council and is
often sought out as a consultant and adjudicator for Show Choirs and Concert Choirs.

Ms. DANG CHAU ANH
VIETNAM

Head of Conducting Section at Vietnam National Academy of music
Member of the World Choir Council representative of Vietnam.
She received Masters degree in Choral Conducting and Music education from Vietnam
National Academy of Music and Malmo Academy of Music (Sweden). She has over 20 years
working as a Chorus master, Choir Conductor. She led Vietnam SolArt Choir to Gold Medals,
Public Prizes, Special Prizes. In the 7th and 8th International Johannes Brahms Choir
Competition in Wernigerode, Germany, the 3rd Vietnam International Choir Competition.
In several years, she was Guest Conductor in Children of the World in Harmony and Voices
Without Border in Petoskey, the USA.
She received many invitations from Interkultur and other International organizers to be juror
for Choir Competitions in Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia.
She is also well-known as Host, Music expert, Juror of many music competitions on Vietnam
Broadcasting System over the whole country.

Mr. ANTHONY GO VILLANUEVA
PHILIPPINE

Anthony Go Villanueva, a pianist, conductor, singer, composer & arranger is acknowledged as
one of the Philippines’ most promising choral conductors of his generation as his musical
dynamism enabled him to reach a level of success & distinction rarely found at his very young
age.
Part of Anthony Villanueva's early musical foundation was his years studying in the University of
Santo Tomas (UST) where he majored in Piano and Choral Conducting, under the tutelage of
music luminaries Dr. Raul Sunico and Prof. Fidel Calalang Jr., respectively. In 2018, he finished his
degree in Music, majoring in Choral Conducting at the Philippine Women’s University. He has
enriched his solid choral experience as a former member of the UST Singers which he considers
his biggest influence, and he now shares this knowledge & experience in successfully handling
Kammerchor Manila. During his time with the UST Singers, he received the Benavides
Outstanding Achievement Award for winning the Choir of the World in 2010.
In 2011, Anthony started his conducting career with Kammerchor Manila, a recipient of the
Philippine National Commission for Culture and the Arts Ani ng Dangal Award in 2016 and 2019.
Since then, he has led the group in numerous performances, tours and competitions from the
local to the international stage. In 2013, the group won 3rd place in the Chamber Choir
Category at the 1st Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival. In 2014, the choir was
declared the Absolute Winner at the 42nd Festival of Songs in Olomouch, Czech Republic,
where they also received gold medals and was declared category winner in multiple categories.
In 2017, the choir was declared as the Grand Prix Winner at the 1st Leonardo da Vinci
International Choral Festival held in Florence, Italy and the First Prize winner in Habaneras &
2nd Prize winner in Polyphony at the 63rd Certamen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonia in
Torrevieja, Spain.

THE NATIONAL DEPARTMENT
FOR CULTURE AND ARTS

The GENIUS Seni program is a training program for Malaysian children gifted in the arts
between the ages of 6 to 17. The children of GENIUS Seni goes through a structured learning
process involving 64 hours in a month. The program is managed by the Ministry of Tourism,
Arts and Culture through the National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) and focuses on
two main areas dance & choral singing.
