- RUT E ye FS PR ewe a “ty 4 Metallica (left to right): Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Cliff Burton. METALLIC MAS Tens Clr We AL ve Don’t listen to so-called experts. If you do, then you'll still believe that a pure power metal band that doesn’t rely on makeup or wild on-stage theatrics can never make it in today’s “sophisticated” rock world. And if you do believe that, just don’t tell the guys in Metallica. These four West Coast wildmen have managed to convert their fondness for slashing metal chords and sandpaper vocals into one of the major success stories of the year. Their second major-label release, Master Of Puppets, has shown that music played with conviction and skill is still what the metal masses want. “We’ve always done things our own way,” drummer Lars Ulrich stated. “Sure, we’ve heard that a group that looked and sounded like ours would never be anything but a cult band. That made us laugh because we didn’t care. We never considered how popular we could become or how many albums we could sell. We made the music we liked, and if other people could get into it, then that was great. If they couldn’t, we understood. But itis really nice that the new album has done so well. The record company was saying, ‘Hey, give us short songs this time.’ We didn’t, and the people liked it — that’s got to say something.” LTD. KAPLAN/RETNA, ROBIN ee

The Metal Report The surprise firing of Vivian Campbell by Ronnie James Dio was sparked, according to those close to the scene, by Campbell’s unwillingness to break off his relationship with his girlfriend. It seems that the lady hada penchant for referring to Ronnie in less-than-glowing terms to anyone who would listen — even going so far as to call the band “a living version of Spinal Tap.” When Ronnie asked Vivian to getridofher, Cambell refused, thus causing his unexpected expulsion from the band. Fortunately, both Dio and Campbell landed on their feet with the guitarist beginning a solo album, and the band replacing Vivian with former Giuf ria axe slinger Craig Goldie. Will Bad Company be reforming? In the wake of all the Led Zeppelin reformation rumors, it seems that Firm vocalist Paul Rodgers contacted old cohorts Simon Kirke, Boz Burrell and Mick Ralphs about getting back together if Jimmy Page were to leave the Firm. Apparently all agreed that such a situation would be a great deal of fun (and potentially profitable), so a tentative September 1 date to reform was given. The next step remains with Page who must decide how serious he is about reforming the mighty Zep. 18 o: The war of words between former bandmates Edward Van Halen and David Lee Roth rages on. A few weeks back, Roth was overheard when he loudly made some cutting remarks about Edward’s wife, actress Valerie Bertinelli. While there was never any love lost between Roth and Bertinelli, David’s savage attack infuriated Edward to the point where he was thinking of taking legal action. “It’s not enough he’s making a fool of himself, but he’s got to start picking on my wife,” EVH said. “I feel sorry for him, and I hate to think what might be next.” VINNIE ZUFFANTE WEISS MARK

ae a en ee / | | Rumors continue to fly that the Scorpions are having | some internal squabbles over guitarist Rudolf Schenker’s decision to split his time between writing material for the Scorps’ new LP, Passion Ruler, and working on the new album by his brother Michael. Those close to the situation report that the band — especially vocalist Klaus | Meine — is annoyed over | Rudolf’s split-allegiance. “The Scorpions must always come first with us,” the vocalist stated. “That is the attitude that got us to where we are today.” EBET ROBERTS Deep Purple’s Roger Glover recently told the Metal Report that he feels the pressure will be much greater on the band this time around. “When we recorded the last album (Perfect Strangers ) we expected it to be successful on the curiosity factor alone,” he said. “We knew there would be interest in it by people who just wanted to see if we could still do it. Now that we’ve proven we can, they'll be expecting a great LP this time. It’s our goal not to disappoint them.” Iron Maiden are currently putting the finishing touches on their next LP, Somewhere In Time. The album recorded in Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas, will break new ground for the band, according to vocalist Bruce Dickinson. “We're never satisfied to sit back and depend on formulas,” he said. “Every time we’re trying to evolve and grow. This album is certainly no exception. There are some new and exciting ideas, and I’m sure our : fans will find it very interesting, to say the least.” | 20 | | | { | ae = | . | | | | | ‘ |

Yes, he knows that the eyes of the rock scene (as well as his countless female admirers) are on him, but Jon likes the idea of working with the world focused squarely in his direction. His ability to write hard rocking anthems as well as sensual ballads has made him a multi-talented threat who just might emerge as rock’s next big “‘crossover” superstar. It’s not an idea that upsets him. “I really haven’t considered getting into things like acting or television,” Jon explained. “But who knows? Anything’s possible.
