COMPETENCY-BASED
LEARNING MATERIALS
SECTOR: AGRI-FISHERY
QUALIFICATION: HORTICULTURE NC II
UNIT OF COMPETENCY: PERFORM ESTIMATION AND BASIC
CALCULATION
MODULE TITLE: PERFORMING ESTIMATION AND
BASIC CALCULATION
HOW TO USE THIS MODULE
Welcome to the learners guide for the module. PERFORMING
ESTIMATION AND BASIC CALCULATION. This learners guide contains training
materials and activities for you to complete in within 1 month.
The unit of competency “Common Competencies” contains the knowledge
skills and attitudes required for a Agri-Fishery. It is common at National
Certificate Level II (NC II). It is one of the common modules at NC II.
You are required to go through series of learning activities in order to
complete five (5) learning module. In each learning outcome, here are
information sheets, resource sheets, and reference materials for further reading
to help you better understand the required activities. Follow these activities in
your own and answer the self-check at the end of each learning outcome. Use
the blank answer sheet at the end of the module to reflect your answer for each
self-check. If you have questions, please feel free to ask for the assistance of
your facilitator.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). You may already have some or most
of the knowledge and skills covered in the learning guide because you have:
• been working for sometime
• already completed training in the area
If you can demonstrate to your trainee that you are competent in particular
skills, you don’t have to do the same training again.
If you feel you have some of the skills, talk to your trainer about having
them formally recognized. If you have a qualification certificate of competence
from previous training show it to your trainer. If the skills you required are still
current and relevant to the units of Competency, they may become part of the
evidence you can present for RPL. If you are not sure about the currency of your
skills, discuss this with your trainer.
A Record of Achievement is also provided for you trainer to
complete/accomplish. Once you have completed the module this will show your
own progress.
DIRECTION FOR USE OF THIS LEARNING GUIDES
This module was prepared to help you achieve the recognized
competency in Common Competency. This will be the source of information for
you to acquire knowledge and skills in this particular module, with minimum
supervision or help from your instructor. With the aid of this material you will
acquire the competency inadequately and at your own face.
• Talk to your trainer and agree as how you will both organize the training of
this unit. Read through the learning guide carefully. It is divided into
section which covers all the skills and knowledge you need to successfully
complete in the module.
• Work through all the information and complete the activities in each
section. Read information sheets and complete the self-check. Suggested
references are included the supplement and materials provided in this
module.
• Most probably your trainer will also be your supervisor or manager.
He/she is there to support you and show you the correct way to do things.
Ask for help.
• Your trainer will tell you about the important things you need to consider
when you are completing activities and it is important that you listen and
take notes.
• You will be given plenty of opportunity to ask questions and practice in the
job. Make sure you practice your new skill during regular work shifts. This
way you will improve both your speed and memory and also for your
confidence.
• Talk to more experienced workmates and ask for their guidance.
• When you are ready, ask your trainer to watch your perform the activities
outline in the learning guide.
• As you work through the activities, ask for written feedback on your
progress. Your trainer keeps feedback / pre-assessment report for this
reason. When you have successfully completed each element ask your
trainer to mark on the reports that you are ready for the assessment.
• When you have completed this module or several module and feel
confident that you have had sufficient practice, your trainer will arrange
and appointment with registered assessor to assess you. The results of
your assessment will be recorded in your competency Achievement

Goods produced using English measures will use a set of tools different
from the tools made to work on goods produced using metric measures. Thus
mechanics will need two sets of tools during the changeover period to lessen the
cost. Some manufacturers are making inserts that convert sockets from English
to Metric. Common fractions will be needed for some time, and everyone who
works with numbers should know how to use common fractions in solving
everyday problems. It is also possible that we should know mathematical
operations, percentage and ratios, unit conversion, basic accounting principles
and procedures like solving production cost, sales and accounts receivable and
payable.
Self Check:
1. In mathematics, what are the different operations involved?
2. What operation is involved under the basic principles and procedures?
Answer Key
1.) 1 Basic mathematical operation
