HOW TO USE THIS LEARNER’S GUIDE

Welcome to the learner’s guide for the module Apply Safety Measures in Farm
Operations.

This learner’s guide contains training materials and activities for you to complete
within 3 weeks.

This unit of competency, Common Competency contains the knowledge, skills
and attitude of students. It is common at National Certificate Level (NC II).

You are required to so through a series of learning activities in order to complete
from (4) learning outcomes of the module. In each learning outcome, there are
Information Sheets, Resource Sheets and Reference Materials for further reading to
help you better understand the required activities. Follow these activities on your own
and answer the Self-Check at the end of each learning outcome. Use the blank answer
sheet at the end of the module to reflect your answer for each self-check. If you have
questions, please feel free to ask for the assistance of your facilitator.

Recognition of PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)

You may already have some or most of the knowledge and skills covered in this
learner’s guide because you have:

¾ been working for sometime
¾ already completed training in the area

If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a particular skill,
you don’t have to do the same training again.

If you have some of the skills, talk to your trainer about having them formally
recognized. If you have a qualification or certificate of competence from previous
training, show it to your trainer. If the skills you require are still current and relevant to
the units of competency, they may become part of the evidence you can present RPL. If
you are not sure about the currency of your skills, discuss this with your trainer.

A Record of Achievement is also provided for your trainer to complete /
accomplish once you have completed the module. This will show your own progress.

DIRECTION FOR USE OF THIS LEARNER’S GUIDE

This Learner’s Guide was prepared to help you achieve the required competency
in Applying Safety Measures in farm Operations. This will be the source of information
for you to acquire knowledge and skills in this particular module with minimum
supervision or help from your instructor with the aid of this material you will acquire the
competency independently and at your own pace.

• Talk to your trainer and agree on how both will organize the training of this
result. Read through the learning guide carefully. It is derived into sections,
which covers all the skills and knowledge you need to successfully complete
in this module.

• Work through are the information and complete the activities in each section.
Read information sheets and complete the self-check suggested references
are included to supplement the materials provided in this module.

• Most probably your trainers will also be your supervisor or manager. He/she
is there to support you and show you the correct way to do things. Ask for
help.

• Your trainer will tell you about the important things you need to consider when
you are completing activities and it is important that you listen and take notes.

• You will be given plenty of opportunity to ask questions and practices on the
job. Make sure you practice your how skills during regular work shift. This way
you will improve both your speed and memory and also your confidence.

• Talk to more experience workmates and ask for your guidance

• Raise the self-check questions at the end of each section to test your own
progress.

• When you are ready, ask your trainer to watch you perform the activities
outline in the learning guide.

• As you work through the activities, ask for written feedback on your progress.
Your trainer keeps feedback pre-assessment reports for this lesson. When
you have successfully completed each element as your trainer to mark on the
reports that you are ready for assessment

• When you have completed this module (or several modules), and feel
confident that you have had sufficient practice. Your trainer will arrange an
appointment with registered assessor to assess you. The results of your
assessment will be recorded in your Competency Achievement Record.

regulatory and organizational requirements for Apply Safety

1. Safety regulations and workplace safety and hazard control practices and
procedures are clarified and explained on organizational procedures.

2. Hazard / risks in the workplace and their corresponding indicators and
identified to minimize or eliminate risk to co-workers,, workplace and
environment in accordance with organization procedures.

3. Contingency measures during workplace accidents fire and other
emergencies are recognized and established in accordance with occupational
procedures.

4. Terms of maximum tolerable limits which when exceeded will result in harm
or damage are identified based on threshold limits values (TLV).

5. Effects of the hazards are determined

6. OHS issues and / or concern and identified safety hazard are reported to
designated personnel in accordance with workplace requirements and
relevant workplace OHS legislation.

7. Occupation Health and Safety (OHS) procedures for controlling hazards / risk
in workplace are consistently followed.

8. Procedures for dealing with workplace accidents, fire and emergencies are
followed in accordance with organization OHS policies.

9. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is correctly used in accordance with
organization OHS procedures and practices.

10. Appropriate assistance is provided in the event of a workplace emergency in
accordance with established organization protocol.

11. Emergency – related drills and trainings are participated is as per established
organization guidelines and procedures.

12. OHS personal records are completed and updated in accordance with
workplace requirements

Definition of Terms:
1. Hygiene – is science which deals with the maintenance of health
2. PPE – Personal Protective Equipment

3. OHS – Occupational Health and Safety
4. Tourism – to travel around, or to visit as a part of tour
5. Hazard – chance, risk, state in a gamble

6. Risk – possibility of loss of injury
7. Health – is the optimum, physical / mental social efficiency of well being
8. Physical Hazard – impact, illumination pressure noise vibration, temperature,

9. Biological Hazard – bacteria, viruses, plants parasites, mites, molds, fungi insect

10. Chemical Hazard – dust, filters, mists, fumes
11. Psychological – own exertion excessive force, awkward static position, fatigue,

Safety regulations will help you maintain total health, physical and social well

being. Its focus is on preventive health and safety measures. It encourages improving
and safeguarding your health through the implementation and observation of the
following code and regulations of the Government such as Clean Air Act, Building
Codes, National and Electrical and Fire Safety Code, Waste Management Statutes and
Rules, Philippine Occupational Safety and Health Standards, Pole Regulations on
Safety Legal Requirements and ECC Regulations.

Keeping the environment healthy is the responsibility of the government, society

and each individual. Today, many new problems must be solved in order to save our
national resources and to protect people from environment a safe and healthy one to
live in. But there are still many hazards / risk that may affect our health in the future. The
success of laws to control these dangers depends on the cooperation of each individual.
All of us must have knowledge of environmental problems such as the following:
physical hazards, biological hazards, chemical hazards, and ergonomics. To these
dangers we must do our part to make the world a safer place, not just for ourselves and
our neighbors, but for future generations.

Accident are increasing today than ever before because of our modern lifestyle.
More dies today as a result of accidents than from any other single cause. This partly
because death from other causes have drastically reduced as medical science has
made as possible for as to protect our youngs from a range of preciously fatal diseases,
with this welcome development, however comes as corresponding increase in the
exposure of youngs to mechanical and electrical appliances, such electric households
appliances and fires and household products can be poisonous to young if consumed,
such as disinfectant, cleaning agents and insecticides. There is a greater need,
therefore, to be vigilant and prepared to meet any emergency.

It is very common today that young parents are want sufficiently aware of the
increasing sources of accidents and quite unprepared to take the necessary first aid
steps to deal with accidents until medical help is available to reduce injury and save the
life of young’s theres a need to be familiar with the different kinds of hazards / risk in all
areas of concerns and they are the following: physical hazards that excludes impact
elimination, pressure, noise vibration, temperature and radiation: Biological hazards,
bacteria, viruses, plants, parasites, molds, fungi and insects: Chemical hazards, dusts,
fibers, mists, fumes, smoke, gasses and vapors and the ergonomics: the physical
factors and the psychological factors.

From these different hazards mentioned we should know how to evaluate in
order for us to control accidents.
