The Skye Terrier Club of America (STCA) was founded in 1938 to protect and pre-
serve the Skye Terrier. Our AKC-member club is comprised of responsible breeders,
owners and exhibitors of Skye Terriers. Recognizing that the quality and reputation of
all Skye Terriers rests solely in the hands of their owners, breeders and exhibitors, the
members of the Skye Terrier Club of America abide by, and are guided by, a Code of
Ethics. Visit our website at: http://clubs.org/skye.

ATTENTION ALL STCA VOTING MEMBERS
Between January 1 and April 30, 2017, Regular STCA Club Members in good standing may submit their nominations for persons
to judge 2019 and 2020 STCA National Specialty Shows to the STCA Secretary. All submissions received will then be provided
to the Judge Selection Committee for consideration. Each nomination must be accompanied by a brief biography of the proposed
judge and the reasons why the member believes the proposed judge should be placed on the selection ballot. Nominations may also
include qualified foreign judges. The Judge Selection Committee will then meet in April to compile the final selection ballot which
will then be mailed to the membership by July 1, 2017 for voting.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
It hardly seems possible as I write this on a sunny 70 degree November day that another Montgomery is history and the
holidays are fast approaching! Despite a cool blustery day with rain, mud and even a little bit of sun, Montgomery was
an especially fun time this year. It’s always good to catch up with old friends, but I was especially excited to meet sev-
eral new Skye owners and first timers at Montgomery, and also a few potential new Skye owners ringside looking to get
into the breed. All certainly encouraging signs and some hope for the future of our Skyes! I hope everyone will take the
time to welcome these newbies if they’re in your area and graciously offer to mentor them so they’re encouraged and
motivated to continue in our breed and sport.
Dues notices will be going out shortly, and again there will be information about some of the committees we hope you
will generously consider supporting so the club may continue some of our projects needing additional funds. Also in-
cluded will be an informative flyer about the AKC Political Action Fund. The AKC Pac is a non-partisan fund that
works to elect legislative candidates who value purebred dogs and will fight for our rights as owners, exhibitors and
breeders of purebred dogs. I hope you will take a minute to read about the good work the PAC is doing to protect our
rights to own dogs and consider a donation to this worthy cause.
Just in time for Holiday Gift giving for all your Skye friends, and due to the wonderful feedback and sales, the STCA has
ordered additional Pillows and Throws! They are simply stunning and will be available for sale a short time longer so
hurry and get your orders in to Elaine Hersey! See this Bulletin for more information and photos.
With the New Year just around the corner, I’ve been thinking about goals and projects to better serve our Skyes and
members in the coming year. Recently I’ve asked and had some suggestions from some of the members about things
they would be interested in and I’m always open to feedback, suggestions and input, and would be happy to hear from
you too. One area of interest is for more seminars, and I would love suggestions for topics. Also, if you have feedback
on Montgomery/Specialty, or other areas you would like to see enhanced please let me know. And, as always if you are
interested in serving on a committee we would welcome the help. I’m happy to announce that Theresa Fursa has of-
fered to step up to Chair the Ways and Means Committee and I’m excited to see what exciting things she comes up with!
Speaking of committees, the STCA Rescue Committee has been busy these last couple months and has successfully
placed several rescues that have unfortunately found themselves in shelters. Thanks so
much to Chair Jerry Alley, assisted by Al Smith and all the others who assisted to help
these Skyes find their new loving homes.
Best wishes to you all for a Joyous Holiday Season and the all the best for Joy, Peace and
Prosperity for the New Year!
Karen Turnbull,
President

THE SKYE TERRIER CLUB OF AMERICA
NATIONAL SPECIALTY - 2016
A breed club can not extend a more precious gift to any judge than to invite that judge to officiate at its' National Specialty. I
have been humbled and honored on three occasions to have been so blessed by the STCA - 1983, 1996 and then this year. I
cannot thank the Skye Terrier Club of America enough for these greatest of honors. That your National is held at
Montgomery Co. KC, the greatest Terrier show in the world is as it should beand my FAVORITE show. I am additionally
blessed as this year is my 30th time judging at our MECCA!
Some of you are aware that my association with the breed extends back to an evening handling class taught by the late famed
Terrier handler Seth Campbell. When THE MASTER mentioned to me, his part time assistant, that he was conducting said-
class I could not resist and I was right at ringside to watch and to learn. It was that night that I met"Bruce", later CH.
GEMINI SIR BRUCE. From that came a lifelong love of the breed and many people.
The day of this years' show, Oct. 9, dawned dark, wet, gloomy and gray and there was light rain right through the Sweep-
stakes judging. By the time I entered the ring the rain had stopped but it remained generally overcast and cool. I felt sorry
for those seated at ringside because those from the south or west were actually probably down right COLD!
The Skyes, however, were there to have a good timewith others of their kind and none seemed even slightly impeded by the
weather. After all they ARE from Skye! Having been invited to judge their once-every-five-year extravaganza, "Skyes on
Skye", in 2011 I can assure you that the weather there is not always sunshiny and clear but the overall beauty of the place
literally takes ones' breath away.
Back to this show -
With the dog classes over and standing back to look at the winners of each class one dog stood out to me for his outline, his
correct balance, his elegant neck and smooth blending into his shoulders, his strong topline and his smooth movement with
proper front. It was my pleasure to acknowledge the winner of the 9-12 mos. class, AMBLE ON UPSIDE OF DOWN, as my-
Winners Dog for a 5 point major. Reserve to the darker gray/black Open Prick-ear Class winner, GLEANNTAN THISTLE
DEW ATARGENT CGC. Again a Skye that was strong in topline, profile and balance. Both, as with all of my winners, were
prick-eared with correct ear carriage and placement. Both had good skulls with proportionate strength of muzzle.
Winter 2016 Page 11
In bitches I was taken IMMEDIATELY by the winner of the Open Class, UTZMOOR MALIBU BARBIE AT ROVER RUN,
who came into the ring totally full of herself (as Annie Clark was fond of saying). This miss was MISS GAITY to me from
the very first second that my eyes beheld her. She was what I want in a bitch - - - - long, low, level and lank. Fronts are not a
great strength in our breed and never has been. This bitch has a gorgeous front and strength of topline that never let down.
Her coat is double and heavy though it was obvious that her tail coat was a touch thin. Reserve to her was the charming 6-9
baby, GLEANNTAN BELCOURT'S BELLE OF THE BALL, a 7 month old charmer who acted her age yet exuded type and
class and who had the quality to carry off this wonderful win at this tender age because she fully deserved it and I will be
most interested to see what she matures into. I'm expecting much and will be watching.
The single Veteran bitch, 11 years old and with full dentition, reminded me of the year that I won that class at The National
under Swiss Judge Elsbeth Clerc with Gordon Jackson's CH.THE ROCK'S DICKIE. This years veteran was in magnificent
shape in coat, body and attitude and she showed like she knew why she was there and, being the Prima Donna, she was
pleased to be back on the stage!
Next, the piece de resistance, the Specials Class. With but two absent they covered a good portion of my very good sized ring.
It was thrilling for me to look at them all and many memories flooded in - - - - - 1973 when I won the breed therewith the
Juhasz's CH. TALISKER'S FEARLESS as well as 1975. '76 &77 when I won the breed with my wife, Joan's, CH.TWIN
TOWN'S GEORDIE ROSS and so many, many other - - - - times, dogs, people. That the club held this Specialty in memory
of Carol Simonds who was a dear and treasured friend for so many years was special. And having the very hat that she wore
to so many Specialties gracing the trophy table added very special blessings to the whole day.
Each of the Specials was in wonderful shape, good coats properly conditioned and well groomed. Bodies were very good and
temperaments, once a serious potential problem, have been outstanding thanks to responsible, knowledgeable and conscien-
tious breeding. Skulls and forefaces were each correct and I did not find even one questionable bite. Ears on both types were
set on and carried correctly. Rear movement in general was good; fronts will always require improvement.
I found my BOB in the cream dog, GCHB BLAZE OF GLORY OF WALLACE'S COVEN, who again stood out from the
get-go though his handler was moving him way too fast for me. On the individual move that was all slowed down and I could
appreciate his obvious quality. He was in magnificent condition --coat, body, muscle-tone, topline, tail carriage - - - -all
added up to paint the picture of a Skye that I appreciate. Everything was in balance and there was zero exaggeration- - - - a
good, honest, elegant Skye. One that I had never judged nor seen before but one to be appreciated and savored like a fine
wine.
BOW to my classy, class bitch who is a breeders dream. I must admit that when I was home that night and saw that she was
co-owned by the late Carol Simonds more than one happy tear flowed from my eye but I'm trusting you not to tell ANY-
ONE!
Interesting that my Select Dog and Select Bitch were littermates owned by the Herseys. Hopefully that showed some consis-
tency and also showed that they are producing very excellent type which is of extreme importance and value.
Let me not forget to thank my two ring stewards, Karen Sanders (STCA Sect'y) and Treasurer, Julie Ordner for the excel-
lent job of keeping everything in order so that the Specialty could move along smoothly. Thanks, too, to the ever beautiful
and very longtime friend, your President, Karen Turnbull - - -always sweet, charming and gracious. The gift of an all-
purpose STCA logo utility pack is greatly appreciated and will be often in use.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for everything but mostly thanks to the breeders of today and yesterday whose wise breed-
ings have brought us to the wonderful level of quality that this HEAVENLY BREED today enjoys. God bless you all.

AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB
OUTSTANDING SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD
SKYE TERRIER CLUB OF AMERICA 2016 HONOREE
In 2006, the American Kennel Club (AKC) established its Outstanding Sportsmanship Award affording the
Skye Terrier Club of America (STCA) and other breed clubs the ability to annually recognize and honor a club
member deemed to embody essential characteristics of good sportsmanship. Winners are awarded an AKC
Medallion for having made a difference in the sport of purebred dogs, embodying the AKC Code of Sports-
manship and serving their breed club as an active and valued member.
For an STCA member to receive the AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award the member must demonstrate:
at least five (5) years of continuous membership in good standing with the STCA and not be a current or
slated member of the STCA Board; substantial participation in activities promoting the sport of purebred dogs
demonstrated through a high level of commitment to the Skye Terrier and the STCA; and the embodiment of
AKC’s Code of Sportsmanship. The recipient should also be a regular participant with their Skyes in any AKC
event, or participate in activities of the STCA. Nominations may be submitted by any STCA member in good
standing.
The STCA Board of Directors is honored to name Carol Fink as its 2016 AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship
Award recipient.

C2 STCA 2016 Designer Skye Terrier Throw and Pillow Collection!
Just in time for the holidays, these gorgeous Skye collectibles were created using two of the wonderful draw-
ings from the Skye Terrier Illustrated Standard illustrated by renowned Artist Cathy Nelson.
The charming pillow measures 18" x 18" with a puppy image and Celtic Knot border and is made of 100%
cotton, and black backing. The stunning throw features both a drop ear and prick ear Skye, and measures 50"
x 60" and is also 100% cotton with a tartan plaid border and Celtic Knot accent.
Both items were commissioned by the STCA and custom made here in the USA.
Both of these were designed and originally commissioned to honor our Illustrated Standard Artist,
Cathy Nelson as trophies in her memory at both the Hatboro shows during this past Montgomery Week-
end. We felt they were simply so fabulous the Club ordered extra and are now offering them for a limited time
for sale as a fund raising project for the STCA. Feedback from those who received theirs at Montgomery has
been fabulous and now it's time to make them available to the Skye community!!! These will be wonderful

likewise raised considerable funds for the club.
NEW BUSINESS
· NOHS Statistics Calculations – It was reaffirmed that calculations for purposes of the club annual awards for the top Na-
tional Owner Handler category will follow the AKC calendar which runs from October to October rather than the calendar
year used to calculate other club awards.

regular club membership. His name and information was published in the Fall Issue of the Bulletin.
· AKC Lifetime Achievement Awards – The 3 nominees for each category of the AKC Lifetime Achievement Awards were
discussed. It was subsequently agreed to cast the STCA votes for David Merriam in the Conformation category; Elizabeth
Chase in the Companion Events category; and Teri Dickinson in the Performance category. The Secretary will provide the
club votes to the AKC.
· 2017 Sweepstakes Judge – After discussion, it was decided to table selection of a 2017 Specialty Sweepstakes Judge until
the next Board meeting.
· Bulletin Advertising Payment Issue – A complaint was received from a member concerning what she believed to be poor
quality front and back cover photos for the Summer Bulletin Issue and advised the Board that she did not wish to pay for
them. According to the Treasurer, the member had already paid for the front cover but not the back cover. It was then de-
termined to check with Bulletin Editor Pat Flanagan to determine how the photos in question had been submitted and then
determine a course of action.
· Talamore Country Club Deposit Refund – Treasurer Julie Ordner agreed to look into obtaining a refund of the deposit paid
last year in anticipation of holding this year’s Awards Dinner there. This year’s dinner was instead held at the Holiday Inn
as the Talamore was not available for the date needed.
