The Skye Terrier Club of America (STCA) was founded in 1938 to protect and preserve the
Skye Terrier. Our AKC-member club is comprised of responsible breeders, owners and exhibitors of
Skye Terriers. Recognizing that the quality and reputation of all Skye Terriers rests solely in the hands
of their owners, breeders and exhibitors, the members of the Skye Terrier Club of America abide by,
and are guided by, a Code of Ethics. Visit our website at: http://clubs.org/skye.

From the Editor’s Desk

Where has the year gone? Montgomery has come and gone and here is the Holiday issue of The Bulletin! Time certainly
does fly….especially as we all get older!!! I hope all that attended this years Montgomery had as good a time as I did.
The weather wasn’t too bad, although a little bit of rain on Sunday and cooler temperatures probably was just wonderful
for the dogs. They didn’t get wet as by the time the Skyes were to go into the ring the rain had stopped and the ground
wasn’t all that wet.
To everyone,

See you all in 2018!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Writing this today I find myself reflecting on another Montgomery past, and thinking what an especially nice time I felt
everyone had despite the swampy weather. It was good to see several promising youngsters in the ring, and some new
faces on the end of the leads which are always positive signs for our breed.

This is also the time of year for giving thanks, and when looking at the number of litters for 2016, and what looks to be
the numbers for this year, there is much to be thankful for. I’ve also noticed we have some new owners to the breed,
including young families which is cause for celebration here in the US! Kudo’s to those breeders and folks working so
hard on behalf of our vulnerable Skye’s and are helping to make a difference.

I’m going to predict that 2018 will be a big year for Skye’s too! We’ll be ending the year In Orlando at the AKC Royal
Canin National Dog Show, with the most wonderful and bittersweet awarding of the AKC ACE Award to Elaine and
Steve Hersey’s Dennis, CH Seamist Big Man In Town, for his amazing Therapy work. This will be seen by thousands
and as AKC’s PR staff has assured, there won’t be a dry eye in the house. Be sure to watch and have your hankies
ready! What a wonderful ambassador for Skyes, Dennis will be to the masses, and congratulations to Elaine and Steve
and of course wonderful Dennis.

Also, we begin the countdown until August for the STCA Roving National Specialty in Colorado! Hosted by the Col-
umbine Skye Terrier Club and with a fun Western theme “Rocky Mountain Roundup”, expect a fabulous and fun time
like only the Columbine Skye Terrier Club can provide! This will also be the first back to back show for the STCA with
2 specialties in one day, and in conjunction with the Greeley KC so some really great Special Events thru the weekend
too! Should be a great time and not to be missed! Yeehaw!

Speaking of the Columbine Skye Terrier Club, they have produced a wonderful full color 2018 Skye Terrier Calendar as
a fundraising event to support the Specialties. If you haven’t ordered one yet, they’re still available and can be ordered
from me for $20. Shoot me an email at [email protected]. It’s fabulous!

The Holidays are also the time of year for giving. The STCA has many programs that support our Skyes and loads of
fun events planned for the members and friends of the breed in the coming year. The success of everything we do is
based on the support of our membership both in participation and financially. And while we have fundraising events
from time to time, we also need to count on donation support as well. I hope you will consider sending an additional
donation to one or more of our several committees listed on the dues notice when sending in your dues this year. Mem-
ber support is so very much appreciated!

Wishing everyone a joyful holiday season, and healthy, wonderful, and prosperous 2018!

Karen Turnbull,

President, STCA

SWEEPSTAKES JUDGE CRITIQUE

By Wayne Harmon

Thank you for the opportunity to judge sweepstakes at your national specialty. After judging and observing the classes, it is obvious
the breed is in a good place. Most exhibits were of good size and had a consistent look. Temperaments were good. As breeders, be
proud of where you are but remember to share your knowledge with the next generation. The breed deserves to be preserved.

6-9 mo. Puppy Dog
#27 A well-proportioned boy of good size. Good carriage of the head with good length of neck. Good ear-set and used them well.
He moved with confidence.
#29 A well-balanced boy with good topline, proper tailset and carriage. The head was in proper proportions with a good bite.
#33 Well within the size standard and of good length. Sufficient length of neck, the head was in the proper size for a well-balanced
look.

9-12 mo. Puppy Dog
#9 A well-balanced young boy in good proportions. The head was of good width and length with a good bite. He was very playful
when on the move but had good coming and going when he settled down. Good tailset and carriage.

Winter 2017 Page 11

9-12 mo. Puppy Bitch
#18 A pretty little girl with all parts that fit. She was in good proportion, sufficient length of neck with a level topline, proper tail
carriage.
#22 Well-balanced and of proper height and length, good length of length and rear angulation. Sufficient movement on the side gait.

15-18 mo. Puppy Bitch
#8 A well balanced bitch of good proportion. All parts fit well. Good movement coming and going.
#28 Good size and proportion. The length of neck provided for a good outline and had a level topline.
#26 She was a good size and proportion. This girl was a little less comfortable and moved a little hesitant on the down and back.

REGULAR CLASSES JUDGE CRITIQUE
Judge: Robert Kanas
October 8, 2017

After having a chance to judge the Skye Terriers at many prestigious European specialty shows, FCI World Dog Show Bratislava
2009, World Terrier Show Helsinki 2014 and FCI European Dog Show 2016 in Brussels, I was very honored to accept the invitation
to judge the 105th National Specialty of our breed in the United States.

I would like to thank once again the Skye Terrier Club of America Board of Directors for this opportunity, for the excellent care
throughout the weekend that for me started with a great atmosphere of a Friday official club evening. It was very nice to meet again
some Skye Terrier breeders that I had a chance to previously meet at the World Congress devoted to our breed either in Salzburg
2012 or in Helsinki 2014, and at the same time to get to know many other breeders and fanciers of the breed. My special thanks goes
to Karen L. Sanders for all the coordination of my visit to the United States and to Pat Flanagan and Michael Koss for their support
in the ring throughout my judging.

The 83rd Montgomery County Terrier Show that was held on October 8th, very much anticipated all my expectations of this event
that I have heard a lot about before. Lovely show grounds, excellent organization, 1560 entered dogs in 32 Terrier breeds and
a fantastic atmosphere, that all ads up to give this show a status of the most prestigious Terrier show in the world. The Montgomery
show cannot be described by words and you just have to experience it.

Overall the quality within the Terrier breeds in the United States is on a very high level and in some breeds exceeds the current Euro-
pean population. I had a chance to see outstanding Airedale Terriers, Lakeland Terriers, Irish Terriers, I was very pleased by the
quality of the Cesky Terriers, the BOB Parson Russel Terrier made a strong impression on me, and many other lovely representatives
of other breeds. Only the Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers were, for me, so far from the original Irish standard that we can almost speak
about a different breed.

The system of judging, class division and choosing the breed winner in the United States is very different compared to the FCI coun-
tries. The organization of the work in the ring requires more concentration for a European judge, but I suppose that is also a matter of
routine. In Europe we devote more time to the dog being judged, and that gives us a chance to concentrate more on details than only
to the overall impression and the actual presentation. Especially at the specialty shows organized by breeder clubs of the given
breeds, the judge is evaluating the presented dog quite in detail with a detailed description of his pros and cons. These critiques are
then given to the exhibitors in writing in most European countries. The written critique is not only the judge’s opinion about the dog,
but also gives reasoning for the qualification and placement of the dog. The difference between the two systems of judging certainly
does have positives to it, so I think it is good that you are inviting European judges to your shows and for the same reason I like to
see American colleagues judging at our shows.

I very highly rate the overall quality of the presented Skye Terriers. The sportive attitude of the exhibitors, professional presentation
and excellent show grooming of the coat only added to my lovely experience of the show and in the ring. Out of all the shown dogs
and bitches only one bitch did not show sufficient quality and condition for a show ring, and one male champion did not have, in my
opinion, the qualities for this title. Compared with Europe, your Skye Terriers were presented in a better condition and grooming. In
my opinion also the temperament and the overall ring presentation were more balanced than we see on our continent. The heads are,
in general, of an excellent strength and expression, but some could have longer muzzles, and in some cases I found more defined
foreheads. I was very pleased by the dark eyes of a good shape in most dogs, what I cannot always say about the dogs in Europe. In
most cases the well set and carried ears were just finishing off the unique expression of our breed. Most dogs in my ring were of

Page 12 Winter 2017

a correct shape with a low and long body and a correct substance. In some cases I would like to see longer necks that would give
more elegance to the given dogs. Toplines, that are definitely a very important part of the typical outline and elegance of the Skye
Terrier, were in most cases correct. Only a few had quite a weak topline or roached hips. Fronts are a problem in the breed in the
States and in Europe as well. I had several dogs in my ring whose fronts were quite questionable. On the other hand, I did find sev-
eral dogs and bitches with excellent fronts, which gives me hope that by a responsible approach of the breeders we can reach some
progress in this painful area. The ribcages were in most cases of a good depth with well-sprung ribs. Compared with Europe I found
quite many shorter ribcages combined with long loins. Let’s not forget that the overall correct length of body should come out of
a correct length of ribcage and short, strong and well-muscled loin. In some cases I would have liked to see more forechest. Only
a very few dogs had high tailsets, and in some cases combined with shorter croups. With one exception, all tails were without any
kinks. Most of the dogs had excellent angulations behind, and overall I think you have better hind angulations that the front ones.
Despite that, I did have many dogs and bitches in my ring with a good length of upper arm and with a well-laid shoulder blade. The
coat was of excellent texture and with sufficient undercoat and as I mentioned before, most of the presented Skye Terriers were in an
excellent condition. It was very enjoyable to see more silver dogs and bitches that are lately not seen often in the European rings.
I have not seen a problem in the often-debated size of the American Skye Terriers. For me the correct bones and substance with cor-
rect proportions are important. We cannot forget that the Skye Terrier is not a small dog, but a dog with a body very low to the
ground. Definitely, the smaller size is not a guaranty of correct proportions and so, personally, I prefer dogs and bitches with
a typical strong body, sufficient substance and the shape of body requested by our standard, to the ideal size without the substance
and proportions. Out of all the shown dogs only one was a bit too big for me and also from the proportion point of view, he could
also be a bit lower to the ground.

All my winners caught my attention already when entering the ring and it was not easy to line them up for the final placements. The
absolute winner, the Best of Breed, was a 4-year-old top quality bitch Solana Feed Our Fame. She is a very elegant bitch of ideal
size with very well balanced body proportions. She will catch your attention with a head of ideal length, elegant and well set neck,
strong long backline and a correct ribcage with a sufficient forechest. The correct front and angulations give a premise of a sound
movement in all directions. If I wanted to be a bit critical, I would have preferred a better-carried tail in some moments. The Best
Dog and Best of Opposite Sex winner caught my attention among the rest of the dogs by his overall balance. For me, the almost 4-
years-old Seamist Knight to Remember has a very strong masculine head with a typical expression, excellent bones and substance,
exquisite forechest, very good angulations and hindquarters and a correct movement. His coat of a correct texture could be a bit
straighter. My Best of Winners, the 4-years-old cream bitch Buckwheater´s Beyond Belief literally shined out with her ideal out-
line and proportions when standing. She has a correct head of a sufficient strength and length, strong long elegant neck, excellent
angulation both ends. With her handler they made a perfectly cooperating couple and the overall impression was complemented with
her ideal coat. She did not reach even higher only due to her slightly longer loin, and to be absolutely ideal I would wish her to have
a better movement when coming and going. Select Dog was the only 18-months-old outstanding male Decrux in Montana Bohe-
mia Coko, a dog with a strong head, correct body length, strong topline and excellent movement. Of course in his age he still needs
to develop more in his body and forechest. I awarded the Select Bitch title to the dark silver bitch Sagasky Euphoria, very femi-
nine, of an excellent size and proportions, sufficient substance, adequate angulations and a free movement. Compared to the winning
bitch I would like to see a stronger head and bit longer muzzle on her. Except all three dogs - High Road Blizzard, Antaris Golden-
skye Regulus Black and Juger Edelweiss King Arthur, that were awarded the Awards of Merit for their outstanding qualities, I
was also impressed with the 8-months-old cream dog Gleanntan Sure Shot Greyjoy. He outstood the rest of the puppy class with
his nice strong head of a correct length, excellent topline, correct bones, long and low body, acceptable front and excellent hind
angulation. Later on he went to win the Best of Breed Puppy, and even despite the not yet mature movement in front he also went
on to win Res. Winner Dog. I believe we will be hearing more about this dog. The Res. Winner Bitch was a very attractive dark
grey bitch Buckwheater´s Keep Feeling Fascination, 15-months-old elegant bitch with a lovely topline, excellent size and length,
correct bones and excellent movement even despite her not ideally formed front. This bitch will have a bright future for sure.
Finally, I would like to thank all exhibitors for showing their dogs and bitches under me. I will keep unforgettable memories of the
Montgomery Show 2017 and I believe I will be back in the near future to come and see the show again.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
· 2018 Colorado Roving Specialty Show Update – Karen Turnbull provided an update on the planned Colorado Roving Spe-
cialty Show weekend scheduled to be held in conjunction with the all breed Greeley Kennel Club Shows in mid August of
2018. She reported sales of the calendars designed by the host Columbine Skye Terrier Club as a fundraiser in support of
the shows were going very well. It was further reported that Karen Wilson has accepted the assignment to judge the second
of two planned back-to-back National Specialty Shows and these will be held on Friday, August 17, 2018 prior to the
Greeley KC shows on Saturday and Sunday August 18 and 19. Contracts still need to be finalized for Karen Wilson and
the selected first show judge Jackie Stacy. Planning is also going forward on an Education Program day planned for the
Thursday prior to the specialty shows.
· Mass Emailing Status Report – Michael Pesare will be getting together shortly with Secretary Karen Sanders to provide
instruction on how to initiate the new MailChimp program. Once this is on line, a welcome message will be sent out to
members, judges, and subscribers to introduce them to the new system. For those very few STCA Members who have not
provided email addresses, all by-laws mandated items will continue to be sent to them via regular mail.
· Special Awards – Two of the three Special Awards given at this year’s Awards Dinner for Outstanding Service were offi-
cially reaffirmed by the Board as initial voting was not conducted at a regular meeting to ensure these would be a surprise.
They included Outstanding Service Awards for Steve and Elaine Hersey and their Therapy Skye Dennis (soon to receive
the AKC Award of Canine Excellence in the Therapy Category for 2017) and Darlene Sumner and her high flying agility
champion and poster girl Sabrina.

NEW BUSINESS

all future use.
· AKC Reunite Donation Proposal – On a motion by Steve Hersey and second by Pat Flanagan, it was agreed to gift the AKC
Reunite program with $500 from the STCA Rescue Fund. There is tremendous need right now by this program due to the
major hurricanes earlier this year in Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico and most breed clubs are making special fund dona-
tions.
· Westminster Meet The Breeds – On a motion by Mickey Koss and second by Pat Flanagan, it was agreed to support the
Meet The Breeds day in New York in February 2018 held the Saturday prior to the Westminster KC Dog Show provided
there are members available to staff it. (Michael Pesare later indicated he and wife Maida Conner would coordinate club
efforts for this activity.)
· Bonding – On a motion by Karen Sanders and second by Mickey Koss, it was reaffirmed that the STCA Treasurer needs to
be bonded and as bonding does not carry over from one treasurer to the next, this needs to be accomplished as soon as pos-
sible following the election of a new treasurer.

ing of the club (i.e. dues paid). Our Referral Committee receives the names of people who have contacted the AKC with inter-
est in our breed. If you currently have or anticipate a litter, please contact:
