Ah! Sweet summertime! Finally, after a very long winter and a spring that was a little bi-polar, we’ve welcomed summer
here in Colorado! Like the weather, we’ve seen a few new changes and some exciting news.

First and foremost was the first beautiful Spring issue of The Bulletin under the helm of our new Editor Erin Shaw
with assistance from Graphic Artist, Amy Estrada. An article submitted from Alison McLeod, Recaps of Specialty and
Westminster news from Karen Sanders and Michael Pesare, Grooming Tips submitted from the Montgomery Thursday
Night Dinner by Elaine Hersey, and fun STCA things to buy from Ways and Means Chair, Theresa Fursa . There was lots to
discover and enjoy, and we hope everyone found something of interest in this new format. From the excellent feedback
from members I’m sure there was.

The Health Committee will see a change with Darlene Sumner taking over as Committee Chair and Elaine Hersey
stepping down. The STCA extends many thanks to Elaine for her last few years at the helm. Darlene brings an extensive
background and knowledge of Canine Health and Nutrition especially in the Holistic area and loves to help those with Massage, Cold Laser, Pulse Electromagnetic Therapy,
questions about their Skyes. I’m so thankful she has accepted this challenge and I know she’ll be a wealth of information. Alternative Sterilization just to name a few. I hope to pique the
curiosity of all our Skye folk so they may look a little differently
This summer also brings some hot competition in the breed ring with STCA Supported Entries around the country and at maintaining the health and treating, if necessary, our rare

in October. Yes, plans are well underway for another great specialty and fun week of shows and activities. Of note will
be the Thursday Night dinner during which the STCA will be offering a presentation of The Skye Terrier Standard which is
the same one that is offered to aspiring Judges. This will be an invaluable learning experience for members and guests
to understand the Skye Terrier Standard and invite questions and answers from the experts. Also available will be the
option to obtain the Illustrated Standard and Judges Book as educational tools. Friday night will be a Tartan Night and
members and guests are invited to wear their Kilts or dress in Plaid! Always fun!

I am sorry to share the sad news of the passing of long time Minnesota member, Priscilla Zeller who exhibited beautiful
Skyes under the Highlander Prefix. She was a dear friend of Jay’s and mine, and she will be missed by many. The STCA
sends heartfelt condolences to her family.

Best wishes for a fun and Skye filled summer, and I look forward to seeing you all in October at Montgomery!

Look where you will, there is something beautiful or interesting in the architectural vista or the sky-
line before you. The purists may turn up their noses at the figure of Her Majesty seated over the
main entrance to Playfair’s classical building on The Mound, and may sneer at Geordie ‘Morrow’s’
attempt at the Gothic of the ‘Scott’ Memorial; to me both are becoming, and I am old enough to be
fastidious about such architectural features. There is a simple dignity and an unforced sense of
majesty about the Queen, and as for the Scott monument - well, the Scots have given their Waverley
giant a monument, which is more than we English have done for an even greater man - Shakespeare!
- and my eyes rest with pleasure upon it . . . (pages 170-171).

Another of Sir John’s favorite Edinburgh sites was Greyfriars Churchyard. “Grey Friar’s
Churchyard, that almost forgotten and gruesome corner lying between the University and Heriot’s
Hospital, had a fearful fascination for me, as it had for Robert Louis Stevenson . . . There is beauty
to be found, though, near this doleful haunt” (page 169).

The other note of beauty which I have in mind is the monument just
outside the creaky iron gates that lead to the churchyard. It was
erected by neighbours, who saw, day after day, an example of
fidelity unrivalled even by those old Covenanters who laid down
their lives for their cause and were buried in this ground. The
monument is to a little spaniel [today the consensus is that the dog
was actually a Skye terrier], who came to be known about that spot
as ‘Grey Friar’s Bobby.’ It seems that his master had been buried
in the churchyard. The dog was not allowed, we may presume, to
follow the corpse through those sacred portals - free to erring
humanity but barred to the soul of perfect love - so he took his stand
outside the gates and never after moved from them. His little
solitary figure was in time observed by those of the neighbourhood;
he was driven away, but always returned, and at last the kindly folk
who dwelt near by took to feeding the small, famished creature and,
when the winter came on, provided him with a little shelter and a
piece of sacking to sleep upon. Here he passed the remainder of his
small span of life, and the monument to him, which does honour to those who reared it,
commemorates one of the greatest acts and examples on record of single-hearted devotion (pages
169-170).

Giving a final salute to this “soul of perfect love,” Sir John quiried, “If love is God how can
we deny immortality to a being compact of love in its most unselfish form?” (page 170).

** Lady Martin-Harvey was half Spanish and half Scottish. Her father was a Spanish diplomat and
her mother was a descendant of Charles Stuart.
