GoshenParks Goshen Parks and Recreation

Welcome! Spring & Summer

Mayor’s Welcome

Dear Goshen Parks Patron,

I have been enjoying Goshen’s parks since I was growing up. It is so exciting to see how our Parks
& Recreation Department has expanded in both number of parks and number of programs. I have come
to the point in my life where I am especially enjoying watching my children utilize the fantastic parks
and more that I grew up with in Goshen.

I would like to thank Sheri Howland for her years of service to the Goshen community. She truly did
some amazing things and will be missed. Tanya Heyde has taken Sheri’s place as Parks & Recreation
superintendent, and she will continue the excellent work we have all come to love. I am looking forward to what new things we
will see in our parks over the next few years.
Superintendent Tanya Heyde and her staff are continuing work at expanding and maintaining our parks throughout this
community. My family and I spend a good portion of our free time utilizing Goshen’s parks. It is a great way for us to get out of the
house and stay active. Parks also provide venues for community members to meet and get to know one another. The Goshen Park
Department has worked hard at creating a year-round experience for everyone. Whether you like sledding, splash pads, sailing,
triathlons, dance classes, movies, open spaces or playgrounds, we have something for you.
This is all part of the continuing effort to enhance our community’s quality of life. Please come out and experience your parks
this spring and summer. You will quickly realize why my family loves them, and you will learn just one of the many reasons why I
am proud to call Goshen home.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Stutsman, Mayor

From the Superintendent’s Desk

Dear Goshen Resident,

It is with great anticipation that I invite you to explore the 2017 Spring/Summer Goshen Parks &
Recreation Program Guide. The park staff and I are eager to offer an impressive lineup of fun, enriching and
quality-of-life experiences for all ages.

Given our forgiving weather early this year, it is not as difficult as some winters to remember the warm,
sunny days of summer and the predictabilities of spring. Trees, flowers and wildlife are awakening while we
see new park life that offers anticipation for a desirable spring and summer. The parks are becoming alive
with visitors and exciting outdoor activities.
Whether you take part in our trail system, canoeing, adult and youth sports, our special events, our fitness classes or other
activities, we recognize that the Goshen park system is about you. The Park Department strives to meet the needs and desires of
the community, and we welcome your thoughts and ideas. Each and every resident of Goshen is important to our staff.
We take great pride in offering quality programs and maintaining the best parks, facilities and programs possible. It is our
privilege to continue to serve the citizens of this wonderful community, and we hope visitors to the Maple City take a few moments
to see how these resources can enrich their lives too.
In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize my predecessor, Sheri Howland, for her 16 years of dedication to
the Goshen Parks & Recreation Department. Her energy and effort were not only contagious, they were truly inspiring. We look
forward to maintaining her forward momentum.
On behalf of the entire staff, I thank you for your continued support.
Enthusiastically,

Tanya Heyde
Superintendent, Goshen Parks & Recreation

A1n3ntuhalKids' & Teens' Try-Athlon

Saturday, July 8, 2017
Shanklin Park, 411 West Plymouth Avenue

This exhilarating event is offered to anyone ages 5–18 wishing to take part. While our
largest group of participants is from the Goshen area, the 2016 Try-Athlon attracted
approximately 300+ representing 24 different cities! With families, friends and
spectators, this event draws more than 600 people to Shanklin Park on the day of
the Try-Athlon. Our event is conducted much like a traditional triathlon; participants
begin with the swimming competition, then move right along to the bike route and
finish with the run portion of the race. All participants compete in all three portions
of the race consecutively. Racers compete with those in their swimming status group,
gender group and age group. This is a professionally chip-timed race.

While some of the participants are competitive in nature, our emphasis is primarily on
the accomplishment of finishing the race. All racers receive a participation medal upon
crossing the finish line as an award for their achievement, and the top three finishers
of each girls and boys age divisions are awarded a trophy. Parents are invited to
participate with their children during the run portion of the race to show their support
and to be actively involved in their children’s steps toward healthy lifestyles.

Pre-teen racers will swim 25 meters (one length of Shanklin Pool), bike 1.2 miles
and run ½ mile. Teens ages 13–18 will swim for 75 meters (three lengths of Shanklin
Pool), bike 1.2 miles and run 3.1 miles (5K). Each participant completes all three
portions of the race, consecutively, with one final race result.

Packet pickup and mandatory bicycle and helmet safety inspections will be conducted
Wednesday, July 5 at Rieth Interpretive Center, 410 West Plymouth Avenue, from 12
noon to 6 pm. You must bring your bikes and helmets to receive a “passing” sticker
for each. Out-of-town participants who live outside a 50-mile radius of Goshen should
contact Kimberlee at 534-2901 regarding packet pickup and safety inspections.

participantes representando 24 ciudades diferentes! Contando familiares,
