97 In a soft voice grandmother said, “It is the best recipe I have and I got it from my mom. It is called herbal spicy pork. You listen carefully and remember it well.” The granddaughter answered, “Yes, grandma I will do my best to remember it.”
98 When grandmother died, the granddaughter reviewed the recipe. She carefully recalled how to cook the herbal spicy pork.
99 First, make a mixture of Thai spicy herbs using chili, ginger, and galangal. After that use strips of pork or beef and grill them and then smash the meat. Next tear them into small pieces and mix them with the Thai spicy herbs. Finally, serve and eat with your friends.
100 The granddaughter cooks her grandma’s special recipe and sold her food at the market.
101 On the first day at the market, a few people bought her product.
102 On the next day, more people bought her product. These people went and told their friends about the delicious taste of the herbal spicy pork. Surprisingly it became the bestselling food product at the market. Grandmother’s recipe became very well-known and her family became prosperous because of her unique herbal spicy pork recipe. It became a regular on all food menus.
103 A Little Kapok Pillow
104 Once upon a time, there was a love story. In the story, there is a young couple. They love each other very much. The girl in the story makes a pillow and gives it to her boyfriend. Here is the story called A Little Kapok Pillow from Phalad Village in Phayao.
105 The two people in love are Kampun and Soi. Kampun is a nice young man. He has a girlfriend named Soi. They love each other very much. Kampun is a laborer and Soi is a kapok mattress maker.
106 Kapok is the material from the Kapok trees that grow in Phalad Village.
107 Kampun is strong and hard working. Soi is beautiful and honest. They are happy, but they are poor. They plan to marry when the time is right. They can marry when they have enough money.
108 One day, the village headman makes an announcement. He announces, “I need some strong men to work in mines. The mines are far away, but the pay is good. Sign up if you’re interested.” A group of young men sign up. Kampun is happy to sign up too.
109 He asks the headman, “How long is the work?” The headman replies, “You must work for 1 year. Then you can return home.” Kampun quickly accepts because the work can bring him enough money to marry his sweetheart Soi.
110 Soi is both happy and sad. She is happy because they can marry when he returns. She is sad because she will be lonely and miss him dearly. Soi decides to make her sweetheart a little kapok pillow and promise to be faithful while he is away. She gives it to him before he leaves for his new job in the mines.
111 While Kampun works at the mines Soi makes a mattress for their wedding when he returns.
112 One year later, Kampun saves the money he needs to get married. He comes back to the village carrying Soi’s gift. He holds the little kapok pillow lovingly. When the two meet, they hug each other. Kampun is glad that Soi was faithful. This makes him very happy because he knows she loves him completely.
113 Finally, they get marry and live together happily. Kampun keeps his little Kapok pillow to remind him of Soi’s love. Moral: Being faithful and patient can make for a healthy and happy marriage.
114 The Legend of Ban Tung Tae (ต ำนำนบ้ำนทุ่งแต) (ปัิั )
115 Once upon a time there was a small village in Northern Thailand. In this village, there was the Kwan family who were rice farmers.
116 Every year the Kwan family would work the rice fields during the rainy season. But this year there was no rain, and the Kwan family could not work the rice fields.
117 They were sad because they had less rice to eat.
118 All the families in this village were just as sad and so they united to perform the Hae Nang Maew, the traditional praying for rain ritual. They took a cat and together walked around the village praying for rain.
119 All the villagers strongly believed that rain would come soon, but no rain came. This tradition ritual did not work. Despite the failure, Father Kwan of the Kwan family was hopeful and tried to solve the problem another way.
120 He worked hard and dug a well, but that did not work. He did not give up. He decided to build a dam using bamboo sticks at a water source nearby. Then he dug a ditch to the rice fields. He opened the bamboo dam and water went to the rice fields.
121 This idea worked well because it brought water to the area where there was no rain. The other villagers also dug ditches to their rice fields. Now they were all able to work at the rice fields.
122 They called this idea for getting water “Tae” and later named their village “Ban Tung Tae” in honor of the Kwan family’s success in bringing water to the rice fields.
123 Phrachao Sansea Buddha Image (พระเจ้ำแสนแซ่) (ปัิั )
124 A long time ago, there was a Buddha image named “Phrachao Sansae”. “Saen” means one hundred thousand. “Sae” means bolts. Therefore, “Sansae” means the combination of one hundred thousand bolts.
125 There are many Phrachao Sansae Buddha images in different temples. The Phrachao Sansae or Sansae Buddha Image in this story is in the subduing Mara position. The subduing Mara position refers to the “Calling of the Earth Goddess to Witness”. It is in Lanna art style and was made during the Chiang Saen Period.
126 This Phrachao Sansae Image was found in the Kham River near Ban Nam Rin Temple. Surprisingly, no one could lift it up out of the water.
127 At that time, there were five villages which wanted to take this Buddha image to their village.
128 The villages are Ban Sob Kham, Ban Na Aom, Ban Pa Ka, Ban See Phrom and Ban Khuan Dong. These villages tried to find a solution to solve this problem.
129 Thus, there was an agreement that if people from any village could lift it up out of the water, they could take the Buddha image to their village. Finally, the villagers of Ban Khuan Dong could lift it up out of the water.
130 They took the image to Ban Khuan Dong Temple where today it is housed inside the Buddha image hall. It is a very important place for Buddhists to pay respect and make merit.
131 Chao Por Kha Guardian Spirit
132 There is a big tree on the campus of Phranangdin School. This tree is Ton Kha. People believe that there is a guardian spirit living inside the tree. The local people call the guardian spirit “Chao Por Kha”.
133 They show respect to the tree by preparing food offerings and presenting them to the small shrine located under the tree. The food offerings include rice, fruit, sweets, chicken, pork and drinks. They also light 2 candles, and 7 joss sticks at the tree shrine located under the tree.
134 People in trouble will visit the tree shrine and ask for help hoping that the tree spirit will take care of them. Most people strongly believe that the spirit will help make things better.
135 Some people have notice that the tree looks frightened at night because there might be a ghost visiting. But when the ghost leaves the tree spirit is strong again.
136 Every semester, everybody in Phranangdin School gives food offerings to the tree guardian spirit called Chao Por Kha. Everyone tries to do good things for the tree, hoping that they will get help from the tree spirit. Moral: If we do good, we will meet good things.
