Kindergarten Class

A Absences – If a student should miss school because of illness or a death in the
immediate family, please send in a note excusing the absence upon the return of the
student to school.

AKS – Academic Knowledge and Skills –This is Gwinnett County’s Curriculum.
Each grade level has specific AKS that must be covered throughout the year. Please
refer to your AKS Handbook, was given out on Registration Day.

Announcements – Morning announcements begin at
8:27 a.m.

B Birthdays –Students may bring a snack on their birthday to share with the class. We
will celebrate during lunch time. Be sure the snack sent in is an individual treat.
Some examples of individual treats include cookies, cupcakes, brownies, Little
Debbie Snack cakes. You may also wish to purchase ice cream coupons from the
front office and give to each child so they may get ice cream at lunch.

Book Fair – The Media Center hosts a school wide Book Fair twice a year, one in the
fall and another in the spring. More information will come home when the date for
the Book Fair gets closer.

Box Tops- We will collect Box Tops this year to go toward play equipment. Before
throwing away tissue boxes, cereal boxes, and any other food items, please look to
see if there are any Box Tops attached. If there are please cut them out and send
them in with your child.

C Class Parties – We will have two class parties. More information will come home
when the date for the parties gets closer.

Comprehension – A key element in our reading development. Reading does not
take place without comprehension, otherwise the child is simply word calling.

D Discipline Plan- Please refer to the handout for the specifics regarding our school’s
discipline plan. Our school wide discipline program is called PBIS (Positive Behavior
Intervention System). Students will be rewarded with Patriot points.

E Early Release – Twice a year the students will be released from school early in order
for Parent/Teacher Conferences to be held. Early Release dates are Wednesday,
September 25 and Thursday, September 26. The second set of Early Release dates are
Wednesday, February 26 and Thursday, February 27. Students will be released at
12:15.

F Field Trips – Have not been arranged as of yet. We will be going on two trips out of
the building and one in the building this year. Further information will come out at
a later date.

G GKIDS – GKIDS is an ongoing assessment that every student will be given. It has
various areas that are covered. Some parts are given one on one, while others are
given as a group.

H Handwriting – A neat handwriting is a must. Please practice letter formation as
much as possible and writing their names.

High Frequency Words (HFW)/Sight Words – Each week we will be learning new
words. They are called the words of the week. You can places these words on an
index card and have your child practice them each night. Look for the words of the
week on the homework sheet. Right now we are working on color words.

Homework – There is a homework packet that is given out every Monday. The
homework packet contains all of the worksheets that are needed to complete the
homework assignments. Homework will be corrected. Students should bring home
a blue daily folder, a book baggie, a math book (sometimes), and a homework
notebook. Please do not jump ahead and complete homework that isn’t assigned
for that night because all homework is a review of what was taught in class that day.
Parents please look over all homework. Students should also be reading every night.

I Ice Cream – Students may purchase ice cream each day. Students are responsible for
keeping up with their ice cream money. Ice cream cost $ 1.00.

J Just Right Books- just right books are books that your child can read with just a
little bit of support. A book that has more than 5 tricky words is too difficult and a
book that your child is breezing through very quickly is too easy. A just right book
will start coming home Monday-Thursday on Friday is a book of your child’s
choice.

K Keep – Be sure to keep this at your fingertips to help answer any questions about
our classroom.

L Lunch – Our lunch time is 12:10-12:40 p.m.

Lunch Visitors –You can plan to eat lunch with your child on any day. You can
purchase a lunch from the adult salad bar and sit with your child and enjoy a meal
together.

Library books- Students need to make sure they bring back their library books.
Library books can be returned in the Media Center each day. During reader’s
workshop students may go and retrieve a new library book.

Links- Go on the Corley website there is a button called links. Click there are your
child can use some great websites to reinforce skills taught in class.

M Making Number Sentences – Making Number Sentences is the number
combinations put together to make a number. For example: 2+3=5 is just one way
to make the number 5. There are a total of 6 possible ways to make 5 using
addition. We will work on Making Number Sentences.

Math – We cover a large amount of concepts in math. Some concepts include
counting, measurement, geometry, and graphing. Please refer to your AKS
Handbook for all the specific concepts we will be covering.

Medication – The clinic will administer any medication should your child need to
take medication while at school. Please note that no medication can be transported
on the bus. You will need to bring the medication to the clinic.

N Newsletter – Will be sent out monthly. So, that you are updated with what topics
are being taught in the class. Please read.

O On Line Resources – The Corley Elementary webpage has useful activities to
reinforce Kindergarten materials. Please refer to our web page for help in reading,
math, and language arts. http://www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us/corleyes/ under students.

Organization – Developing good work habits that will hopefully last a lifetime.
Organization is a key element in good work habits. We work on staying organized
everyday.

P. Parent/Teacher Conferences – Parent/Teacher Conferences are an opportunity for
us to discuss your child’s progress both socially and academically. Please refer to
Early Release for the Parent/Teacher Conference dates.

Parent Volunteer – We couldn’t do it without you! When you come in to
volunteer please sign in, and get a name tag. If you would like to volunteer please
let me know and we can make a schedule.

Q Quarters – This is just one of the coins we will learn to use to count change. They
are also great for buying ice cream!

R Reading Levels – By the end of Kindergarten students should be able to read a level
D or higher.

Read to Your Child – You are a great model for your child. Everyone loves to be
read to.

Report Cards – Report cards are issued four times a year, every nine weeks.

S Social Studies/Science – Please refer to your AKS Handbook for the specific
concepts covered in Kindergarten.

Specials – We have specials each day from 8:50-9:35 a.m. Please refer to the
homework packet at the bottom to know which special your child goes to the
following week.

T Testing – We will be assessed using GKIDS.

U Unity – Let’s work together.

V Valentine’s Day – We will exchange Valentine’s on Valentine’s Day. Please have
your child make a Valentine (they can be the store bought cards) for every child in
the class.

Work Habits – A huge part of Kindergarten is developing positive work habits. We
work really hard on this from learning how to write our name, to keeping our room
neat, to keep up with our materials. It is an on going process, but we set the stage in
Kindergarten.
