When people asked John the Baptist if he was the one who should come, he answered that he was only the bridegroom’s friend. I was intrigued by this expression and decided to search for its meaning. At the ancient times, the master chose a servant to go out and look for a wife for his son. That mission was very important because the master’s offspring depended on the selection, and that was the reason why the master wanted the son to marry a good woman. The servant had to make a woman fall in love with his master’s son, whom she did not even knew! How could he make her fall in love? Just by talking about him with emotion, surprise, mystery, and even a touch of attraction. To talk about someone in such a way, the servant had to be acquainted very well with the son of the master in different circumstances, so that he could say: When he is thoughtful, my master’s son raises his left eyebrow and elevates his eyes to the sky. This way, at the time of the wedding, the groom’s friend looks joyfully to what he helped to establish, not requiring praise for it, but putting himself to the side and in shadows, he celebrates the accomplishment. This way, John the Baptist had prepared the way and had some followers falling in love with God, so that when Jesus comes into scene, he disappears because his mission is complete. If I were to tell you that you should be a bridegroom’s friend with the ones around you to fall in love with God, what would your response be? They do not listen to me…, they do not care…, I cannot do it…, send someone else… Could you be named groom’s friend? The parents are called to be bridegroom’s friends for their children; the siblings to help in the conversion of the siblings; and so, every one of us should put our grain of sand, not to get recognition, but to feel proud that we lend our arms to the Lord who gathers us as his flock to go to Eternal Glory. Are we doing Ok? If not, this is the time to do it. Cuando le preguntan a San Juan Bautista si él es el que había de venir, el les contesta que sólo es el amigo del novio. Esta expresión me intrigo y decidí buscar a que se refería. En los tiempos aún mas antiguos, los patrones seleccionaban a un servidor para que se encargara de ir a buscar esposa para el hijo del amo. Esa misión era muy importante porque de la selección dependía la descendencia del patrón, por esa razón le era muy importante que su hijo se casara con una buena mujer. ¡El siervo tenia que enamorar a esa mujer del hijo del patrón, a quien ni siquiera conocía! ¿Cómo la podría enamorar? Pues solamente hablándole de él con emoción, alegría, asombro, misterio y aun un toque de atracción. Para poder hablar así de alguien, el siervo tenía que conocer muy bien al hijo del amo en diferentes circunstancias de tal modo que le podría decir: Cuando se pone pensativo, el hijo de mi amo, levanta su ceja izquierda y eleva sus ojos al cielo. Así pues, cuando se llevaba a cabo la boda, el amigo del novio veía con gusto lo que él había ayudado a establecer, pero no requería ningún halago por ello, sino que a un lado y a oscuras, celebraba el logro obtenido. Así pues, Juan el Bautista había preparado el camino y había logrado enamorar a algunos de Dios, así pues, cuando llega Jesús, el disminuye porque ha cumplido su misión. ¿Si yo te dijera que tu deberías ser amigo del novio con los que te rodean para que se enamoren de Dios? ¿Cual sería tu respuesta? No me hacen caso…, no les interesa…, yo no puedo..., manden a alguien más… ¿Podrías llamarte amigo del novio? Los padres son llamados a ser amigos del novio para los hijos; los hermanos para ayudar en la conversión de los hermanos; y así cada uno de nosotros debemos poner nuestro granito de arena, no para obtener crédito, sino para sentirnos orgullosos de ser brazos del Señor que nos reúne como su rebaño para juntos llegar a la Gloria Eterna. ¿Vamos bien?
