Symbolism in Priests Vestments Dearly beloved, everything a priest wears as he celebrates Mass may help us lift up our minds to the Divine if we do not get distracted by it. Each particular vestment has a special meaning accompanied by a prayer a priest prays as he vests. The Amice: a white linen cloth worn on the neck and shoulders, under the alb, by a priest. Symbolically, the amice defends against the temptations of the devil and symbolizes the moderation of words. As the priest puts it on, the accompanying prayer is: “Lord, set the helmet of salvation on my head to fend off all the assaults of the devil.” The Alb: a white vestment worn by clergy and altar servers/acolytes. Symbolically, the alb, being white, symbolizes the purity of heart that the priest must bring to the altar. As the priest puts it on, the accompanying prayer is: “Purify me, Lord, and cleanse my heart so that, washed in the blood of the Lamb, I may enjoy eternal bliss.” The Cincture: a belt or cord tied around the waist of an alb worn by the priest at Mass. It also confines the garment. Symbolically, the cincture symbolizes the virtue purity and chastity. As the priest puts it on, the accompanying prayer is: “Lord, gird me with the cincture of purity and extinguish my fleshly desires, that the virtue of continence and chastity may abide within me. The Stole: an ecclesiastical vestment consisting of a long usually silk band worn traditionally around the neck by bishops and priests and over the left shoulder by deacons. Symbolically, the stole symbolizes priestly power or authority. As the priest puts it on, the accompanying prayer is: “Lord, restore the stole of immortality, which I lost through the collusion of our first parents, and, unworthy as I am to approach Thy sacred mysteries, may I yet gain eternal joy.” The Chasuble: a sleeveless outer vestment worn by the priest when celebrating Mass, typically ornate and having a simple hole for the head. The chasuble is worn above all the other vestments and symbolizes the virtue of charity. As the priest puts it on, the accompanying prayer is: “O Lord, who said, ‘My yoke is sweet and My burden light,’ grant that I may carry it as to merit Thy grace.” Simbolismo de Vestiduras Sacerdotales Queridos hermanos y hermanas, todo lo que un sacerdote usa cuando celebra la Santa Misa puede ayudarnos a elevar nuestras mentes hacia lo Divino si no nos distraemos con ello. También confina la prenda. Simbólicamente, el cíngulo simboliza la virtud de la Pureza y la castidad. Mientras el sacerdote se lo pone, la oración que lo acompaña es: “Cíñeme, Señor, con un cíngulo de pureza, y extingue en mi la llama de la pasión, para que permanezca en mí la virtud de la continencia y de la castidad.” La estola: una vestidura eclesiástica que consiste en una banda larga, generalmente de seda, que llevan tradicionalmente los obispos y sacerdotes alrededor del cuello y los diáconos sobre el hombro izquierdo. Simbólicamente, la estola simboliza el poder o la autoridad sacerdotal. Mientras el sacerdote se la pone, la oración que lo acompaña es: “Devuélveme, Señor, la tunica de la inmortalidad, que perdí por el pecado de los primeros padres; y, aunque me acerco a tus sagrados misterios indignamente, haz que merezca, no obstante, el gozo eterno. La Casulla: una vestimenta exterior sin mangas que usa el sacerdote cuando celebra la Misa, típicamente ornamentada y con un simple orificio para la cabeza. La casulla se usa sobre todas las demás vestiduras y simboliza la virtud de la caridad.
