ABOUT
ROATÁN
WHERE ARE WE?
The island of Roatán, in the Western Caribbean, is the largest of
62 islands and keys that make up the Bay Islands of Honduras. It
is approximately 35 miles long and is two and a half miles across
at its widest point.
Flights land here from Houston, Miami and Atlanta on either United,
American or Delta Airlines. There are also bi-weekly direct flights from
Grand Cayman, and seasonal direct flight from Canada and Europe.
You may have notice that, unlike many tropical islands, Roatán is
not just a bump in the water! It has considerable elevations that
are hugely beneficial in many ways. The elevations start at around
1,100 feet on the west side of the island decreasing to about 750
feet on the east side.
This topography provides both breathtaking views of the Caribbean
at many points up and down the island and much appreciated,
cooling breezes blowing in primarily from the south east.
Roatán is lush with both green and flowering vegetation and fauna
on much of the island.
Our vast Mesoamerican coral reef completely surrounds Roatán
and is part of the second largest barrier reef system in the world.
The reef is home to an abundant aquatic life, ready to be explored,
but it also provides substantial protection from hurricanes that
seasonally threaten the Eastern Caribbean Islands.
The hurricanes we have experienced here on Roatán are most often
NOT the ones that come across the Atlantic from Africa - Roatán
only averages a hurricane about once every 24 years.

THE WEST SECTION OF THE ISLAND
This section includes West Bay where the acclaimed “One of the Top Ten
Beaches of the World” West Bay Beach is located - one of the top ten
beaches of the world. It includes village of West End, West Bay, Sandy Bay,
and the local municipal of Coxen Hole.
This western tip of the island is the most established tourism and developed
area of the island – the majority of vacation rentals and planned communities
are located here for visitors to stay as well along with a large proportion of the
shops, restaurants, activities and bars.
THE MIDDLE
The middle section is centered by French Harbor and is considered the
commercial part of the island.
It of the island is home to various companies that are responsible for a large
percentage of Roatán’s revenue income: the sole producer and distributor
of electricity on the island; the processing plants preparing shrimp for
exportation and large shipping companies, providing dependable ocean
freight between Miami and the mainland of Honduras. It is also where the
new the Pete Dye designed championship golf course is located.
THE EAST END
The eastern end of the island is also most undeveloped and pristine part of
the island with some of the remoter parts only accessible by boat.
Although it does have some local communities and amenities such as a
grocery store, gas station, hardware store, schools and churches, overall, it
has a much more rural and secluded feel. This end of the island offers some
of the best diving and snorkeling in the world on its pristine, virgin reef. The
flats fishing and deep-sea fishing can be fantastic too!
It also has one of the largest black mangrove stands in the world - a natural
filtration and purification system for the waters of the Caribbean Sea and
helps to keep the reef in its pristine condition.
