Welcome

A YEAR OF
ACHIEVEMENT
for EDNZ and
the profession

Warmest of welcomes

It is with a sense of pride and achievement that I present
the EDNZ 2018 Annual Report on behalf of the EDNZ
team.

2018 has proven to be a year of step change for EDNZ
and the profession it represents. In the following pages
we have shared with you the many steps on our journey
in 2018 that we believe have made a difference to our
community.

What that story won’t reveal is the tremendous dedication
and hard work that has gone on behind the scenes to
make that difference. So this is my chance, as Chair of
EDNZ to acknowledge those of you who have contributed
to another successful year.

To the outgoing Chair and Deputy Chair, Dr David Wilson
and Paul Casson, it is difficult to see how EDNZ would
have experienced such a renaissance over the past two
years without your contribution and leadership, on behalf
of the Board and members, a heartfelt thank you.

To those who have served on the Board and standing
committees, including our local conference committee
members: Northland Inc in 2018 and Marlborough District
Council in 2019, your contribution to the organisation has
been invaluable.

5

To our CEO, who is our only permanent, full time employee.
Susan is tireless in her efforts on EDNZ’s behalf and has
successfully translated the Board’s dream into a reality,
thank you Susan.
To the new Board members who have stepped up to support
EDNZ as it continues its remarkable journey of growth and
rejuvenation and most importantly to our members who have
supported EDNZ throughout the year, without you it would
all be for nought.
Finally, a big thanks to those within government who have
supported us throughout the year.
It is said that ‘success has many parents” - we look
forward to EDNZ’s continued success and to growing the
numbers of those within our community that proudly claim
ownership of that success.

Pam Ford
Chair of EDNZ

Achievements at a glance

It has been a year of step change, with key elements of the EDNZ strategic plan achieved.

At the heart of that change lies the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF). It is thanks to the
PGF, that EDNZ has had the resources to launch a formal qualification for all economic
development practitioners throughout New Zealand.

Titled ‘Accreditation for Economic Developers’ (AcED), the qualification has been well
received with well over 170 professionals taking up the opportunity to join the World of
Learning and over 170 enrolments in courses.

Taught by exceptionally well qualified and talented learning facilitators the courses are
insightful, popular, well attended and, thanks to the PGF, very affordable.

EDNZ looks forward to celebrating those who complete the AcED at a graduation
ceremony in Blenheim on the 1st November.

Capacity Funding for the regions

EDNZ also made application to the PGF for capacity funding to support our regional development agencies
(RDA’s). That application was driven by the additional responsibiilties generated for the RDA’s by the identification
and delivery of PGF projects. During the course of the year the Government responded to that application by
announcing its intention to make $5.4m available to regional organisations engaged in PGF initiatives. A number
of our RDA’s have taken up the opportunity to access that fund and build capacity through their regions.

the weekly newsletter are engaged and interested as can

Yet another initiative taken in 2018 was the launch
of a new professional journal. Written by economic
development professionals for economic development
professionals the journal is a response to conference
delegates who were keen to see more examples of best
practice in the months between conferences. Like the
weekly newsletter, the response from readers has been
very positive.

vise that it has achieved a surplus of in the year under report. The surplus is a result of our new continuous professional
gramme which has with the support of the provincial growth fund, proved an outstanding success, our growth in paid

membership subscriptions and a modest surplus from key events held throughout the year.
ment of a permanent and full-time CEO during the year under report has increased the ‘contractor’ expenses, but the return
has been exponential both in terms of the quality and diversity of membership offering and our end of year surplus.

It is intended that EDNZ will continue its commitment to reinvestment, specifically into the CPD programme
over the coming three years.
