Colonial America

A colony is a place owned by another country. The 13 colonies in America were
owned by England and ruled by King George .

Beginning about four hundred years ago Europeans started to come to America, to
start colonies. Colonists met Americans that they traded with. They learned from each
other and exchange ideas about homes, clothing, and customs. Colonial America was very
hard and not fun sometimes, slaves were forced to work and get whipped when not
listening.

Colonists came from
ship.

Thirteen Colonies

In colonial times slaves were
very common to see working all
over the town. Even though
colonies had colonists working,
they still couldn't get the work
done.

Life In A Colonial Town

Life is hard in a colonial town, people have jobs to do and responsibilities.
People have to work to get there jobs done, and it’s hard because streets are narrow
and unpaved, with cracks all over, also roads are made of dirt. Many buildings are
made of brick with lots of cracks so it’s very cold.

Only a few buildings are large, but still have lots of cracks. People who just
come to america have to live in taverns. Taverns are places with dining areas,
meeting areas, and sleeping rooms. The governor is the leader of the colony. People
did not have garbage trucks, so they through the garbage on the street for people to

pick up. Animals lived in homes with colonists too.

Fast fact: Colonists did not Governor's
have a lot of room in their house
town.

Pay close attention to the
book. You are able to here about
life back then in a colonial town.

Life As A Colonist

Life was hard in Colonial Times, people had jobs. Women had to work inside for the
whole day, there jobs were mostly cleaning. They had to cook and prepare food,do
laundry, knitted, worked in gardens, hauled heavy pails of water, and made candles
and soap. Young girls worked and did laundry, prepared food, knitted, and made candles.

Men worked long hours outside and put a lot of sweat into it. They did things
like clearing land, planted crops, cut trees, built homes and barns, tended animals,
put up fences, and worked at trades. Young boys also worked long hours outside,
tended animals, fed animals, chopped wood, and mended fences. Colonial work was hard
and not fun but there work had to get done.

Fast fact: Colonists did not
have a lot of room in there
town.

A Settlers Home

Colonial homes have lots of cracks and no windows, usually the first design was
20 by 20 feet. Doors were very small in the house and the door was two parts so
animals could come in to the house and lay down to rest. The only light in the house
was either a fireplace that they cook with and get light from or a candle, finally a
betty oil lamp is another light they would use.

In some colonies wealthy people had big homes, the people who have big homes
usually have small buildings called dependencies. Also big homes are either for
wealthy people, the governor, or plantation homes. Plantation homes are homes with
gardens or a lot of plantation. People mostly saw these in the southern colonies
where it is hot most of the year.

Mmm...Mmm... You had to pay for tea
back then.
If you have ever heard of Colonial
Times you might be wondering some of the
food they eat or make. Well you might be
surprised after you hear this. People in
the colonial village all have different
tastes and preferences,like some people
have cornmeal mush with syrup for
breakfast, or some people have eggs, and
some people don’t even have breakfast.
Breakfast in a colonial times is very
different from today, and you would not
like cornmeal mush for breakfast and
dinner!

How people got the food was from
hunting deer,rabbit,and even squirrel!
Kids helped get food to they would fish
and pull clams and oysters, and when they

got older they also started to hunt.

Goodmaro fellow townspeople, how do you fare today? I am Thomas, keep your nose to the
grindstone for today. Were going to learn some of the clothes we have here in the colonial
village. Many people have all different styles. Some wealthy families wear clothes like
gowns or suits made from silk, or velvet. Womens clothes had many layers, if you counted
the layers, some wealthy people had nine sweaty and not comfortable layers.

Other people in my town are farmers, servants, and house wives, they don’t have a lot
of money and wear comfortable clothes. People who wear those clothes don’t get a lot of
attention and money. Women wear mob cap. Mob caps are a hat that goes on there head to
cover their head from dirt, dust, and powder.

Life As A Colonialist Child

Good morrow, my name is James. In my town being a colonial child isn’t fun. Over
all it’s so hard to be a colonial child. Here it’s hard because we have to work a
lot, and we don’t get a lot of time to play. On Sundays we have to go to church for a
pretty long time. In the morning people came for two hours, and then when it got
evening time they had to go again for two hours. Everyone had to come, the day was
called lord's day, babies even had to go they stayed in little wooden cages where
they would lay, they were like little playpens for them.
