FOR KIND ATTENTION OF DOS VOTING MEMBERS
The recommendations of the Electoral Review Subcommittee as approved by Executive of DOS on 5th August 2015:-
I. DISPLAY OF THE LIST OF VOTING MEMBERS ON THE WEBSITE
It was suggested that the name and address of all voting members be displayed as the VOTER’S LIST on the DOS website. The
online display of the updated voter’s list on the DOS website is to be ensured by October 15 each year. This is to be performed
by the treasurer with the concurrence of the DOS President & Vice President.
II. PROFILE UPDATE BY THE DOS MEMBERS
It was emphasized that all DOS Members be responsible for updating their address change and voting status. Regular email
communications may be sent out by the secretary / treasurer requesting for the same.

15th January of the following year. Members providing false information/declaration of their address status will be subject to
severe punitive action as per recommendations of disciplinary committee assigned to formulate these.
III. CONCERNS REGARDING EXISTING VOTER LIST
a) The committee addressed the apprehension that the current voters list contains names of DOS members who are no
ϐǤ
such members are made to update their address and voting status. It was reiterated that in the current scenario, the
onus of address change should be placed on the members and they are required to provide an honest declaration of their
current working & residential address and thereby their voter status.
b) It was also stated that senior DOS Members, who retire from practice and are still residents of Delhi, be considered as
voting members. In other words working address is not essential if residential address is Delhi.
c) It was also opined that a complaint regarding status of voting member may be sent to the Secretary by any Delhi member
(in case of members whose voting status is doubted or if a name is inadvertently omitted). Such complaints to the DOS

The committee will implement its decision after due notice to the member.
IV. ELECTION CAMPAIGN
It was agreed upon that non-ophthalmologists will not be allowed to campaign on behalf of the candidates at the conference/
election venue
V. ELECTORAL PROCESS
a) The CV of all electoral candidates may be displayed on the DOS website following last date of withdrawal.
b) Last date for withdrawal of nomination to be 6 weeks prior to the date of election

d) The election area be well secured so that no unauthorized person can gain access.
e) Only members on the voter list and producing valid id document will be permitted to vote.

VI. CUSTODY OF ELECTION RELATED DOCUMENTS IN THE EVENT OF DISPUTE

with the election commissioner till resolution of the dispute. Copies will be furnished as required to appropriate authorities.

Obituary
Prof Mariam Mathew Krishnan, passed away peacefully on the morning of 20th of
ʹͲͳ ϐ

UK. Mariam was born on the 12th of May 1931 at Mavelikara Kerala India to Thankamma
Mathew and Mathew Ittyerah. She leaves behind her legacy in the form of her children
and grandchildren. Her love for knowledge and medicine started at a very young age and
despite pressures from her family to start a family life she opted to complete her higher
studies.
She did her primary and secondary school training from The Bishop Hodges School,
Mavelikara, her birthplace,and completed her college studies at St Teresa’s college,
Ernakulam, Kerala, in 1950. Despite all odds she chose to leave her home at Mavelikara
Kerala and moved to Punjab’s famous Christian medical College (CMC), Ludhiana where
she enrolled for a Licentiate in medicine (LMP). In 1952 she was offered a place in the
prestigious R.G.Kar medical college (Calcutta) where she was conferred the MBBS degree.
She pursued her post graduation (MS in Ophthalmology) at the King Georges medical Prof Mariam Mathew Krishnan
College Lucknow in 1957. She later moved to CMC Ludhiana where she continued to (Past President of DOS)

of medical sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi in 1962. She got married in the year 1966 to Dr.K.C.Krishnan Deputy director
of Advertising and Visual Publicity and started her family life while working at the Lady Hardinge medical College and
hospital in New Delhi where she moved to become the Head of the department, Ophthalmology. In 1983, Mariam became
the Professor and head of the department of Ophthalmology at the prestigious Jawaharlal Institute of Post graduate Medical
Education and research (JIPMER) Pondicherry where she continued to work until her retirement in 1989. She continued to
work post retirement until 1994 despite having suffered a stroke and undergoing a bypass.

(USA) father of Mobile eye services in India and Prof. Franz Fankhauser (Switzerland), father of modern perimetry and
YAG laser who remained her mentors and source of inspiration. Victor Rambo and Prof Fankhauser were instrumental in
instilling a feeling of community service and academic research respectively in her. She took part in a number of charitable
eye camps in the north of India such as Mungeli, Shikohabad and Pithoragarh followed by camps at Ghaziabad, Najafgarh
and Faridabad (in and around the union territory of Delhi). She conducted a number of eye camps while in Pondichery in

ϐ
to become luminaries in surgical and academic world of Ophthalmology, both in India and anroad.
Mariam showed a great interest in embroidery and painting and her home was always adorned with numerous pieces
of artwork, which she painstakingly created over several years. Her love for travel took her to the United States of America
where she received her FICS degree while at the Emory University Atlanta.
She was a great horticulturist and has won several awards including the Presidents award (India) along with her

Delhi, India, in the year 1982 where she had the honour of meeting the then Prime Minister of India, Mrs Indira Gandhi. She
has also been the President of the Delhi Ophthalmological society and the Tamil Nadu Ophthalmic Association.
She lived in New Delhi India until 2013 when she moved to be with her son and daughter in the United Kingdom.
She is fondly remembered by her family, students and patients and those whose lives she touched forever.
