Artist Statement

My name is Sinead Low Shin Yin. I am a graphic design student,
who loves to design and draw.

This story, “Monkey & The Sloth” is inspired by “The hare and
tortoise.”

I hope that through this story, children can learn that we can
succeed if we do not give up on doing something, despite being

slower than the others.

The forest lives a rude monkey, Dexter, who
always teases the other animals for being slow.
“Haha, you are so slow, unlike me I can climb
faster” says Dexter.
“I am not slow,” says Flash the sloth.
Dexter laughs and asks Flash to prove that he is
not slow

Oscar the parrot overheard their conversation and suggests that
Dexter and Flash should have a climbing race.
“I will tie a ribbon on one of the tree branches, the one who takes
the ribbon and reaches the ground irst will be the winner,” says
Oscar the parrot.

As the race begins, Flash starts climbing.
Dexter stays on the ground and says
“I will wait for you to reach the
middle of the tree, and then bypass
you to win.”

Suddenly, Dexter sees a big bunch
of banana hanging on the banana
tree not far away.

!

Dexter immediately climbs towards the tree.
While eating, Dexter did not stop teasing
Flash, as the slow sloth only takes a few steps
away from the ground.

Dexter feel bored while waiting for Flash to reach the middle
part of the tree, so he decided to take a short nap while waiting.
On the other hand, Flash did not give up and continue climbing.

Zzz....

Suddenly a loud cheering noise wakes
Dexter up.
Dexter cannot believe what he sees as the
other animals are celebrating for Flash’s
victory.

1

Dexter apologises for his behaviour and promises that he will not
tease Flash or other animals anymore.

I’m sorry
