The Sun Daily-040723

He said on the bright side, once the economy reverts to its previous healthy growth levels, the ringgit will automatically strengthen, and issues revolving around the weak ringgit will be resolved. “Malaysia is lucky in that exports are higher than imports. But for the moment, it is not reflected in the value of the ringgit, which is weak against major world currencies. “Nonetheless, this will not last too long, and once interest rates worldwide start falling, the ringgit will strengthen.” Sunway University economics professor Dr Yeah Kim Leng said as long as US inflation remains high, its Federal Reserve might increase interest rate once or twice more. He said that will contribute to the outflow of funds because investors will continue to chase after short-term gains and profits from the US dollar. “The outflow of funds will have an impact on the exchange rate and will lead to a weaker ringgit. The other contributing factor is Malaysia’s trade exposure to China, whose economy is slowing down and causing the renminbi to weaken. This also has an unfavourable impact on the ringgit. “Commodities, which are one of our biggest exports, have seen prices ease as demand has weakened. There has also been a drop in oil and gas prices, and all these issues have added up to harm the ringgit.” Yeah said the upcoming elections in six states have also paused foreign and local investments as investors are holding back as they wait for the election results, although the polls have no bearing on the federal government’s power to rule the country. PETALING JAYA: The ringgit’s current weakness is not due to economic fundamentals but caused by external factors such as Western countries, especially the US, raising interest rates to deal with inflationary pressures. Universiti Utara Malaysia economics professor Dr K. Kuperan Viswanathan said the amount of remittances made by foreign workers may also contribute to the weakening of the ringgit. The country currently has some five million foreign workers – three million Indonesians and two million Bangladeshis – sending money home each month. Kuperan said such remittances represent a continuous outflow of currency, which weakens the ringgit since there is no major inflow of money from such countries. “Employers continue to rely on foreign workers to keep costs low. But these workers don’t contribute much to the economy. The country needs to end its reliance on cheap labour by upscaling. This will reduce currency outflow. “There are also thousands of Malaysians studying abroad who are regularly sent money. Adding to this is the fact that many people are buying foreign currencies. These two issues further contribute to the weakening of the ringgit.” Kuperan said while economic growth used to be around 6% to 8%, which made the ringgit stronger, it is presently at a low of 4%, but still better than in most countries. He said as a whole, Malaysia’s economic fundamentals are good as interest rates are low and inflation has fallen. This is despite a drastic fall in the number of foreign students, who were major contributors to currency inflow. But post-Covid-19 and despite the lifting of travel restrictions, foreign student numbers remain poor. Kuperan said although it is still manageable, the consistent budget deficit over the years has played its part in weakening the ringgit. oUS rate hike, remittances by foreign workers, slowdown in China, drop in commodity and oil & gas prices among external causes █ BYRAJVINDER SINGH [email protected] INSIDE TELLING IT AS IT IS ON TUESDAY JULY 4, 2023 No. 8301 PP 2644/12/2012 (031195) www.thesundaily.my Remittances to thousands of Malaysians studying abroad also contributed to the weakening of the ringgit. – THESUNPIC He said on a positive note, the current weak ringgit is likely to grow Malaysia’s trade surplus and benefit the country by contributing to a higher economic growth rate, which will ultimately offset the low value of the ringgit. 2 theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 4, 2023 NEWS WITHOUT BORDERS PM’s KLIA visit aimed at raising immigration integrity PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said his surprise visit to the KL International Airport (KLIA) on Sunday was aimed at raising the credibility and integrity of the Immigration Department, which is being publicly criticised. Speaking at the Prime Minister’s Department’s monthly assembly here yesterday, Anwar said one bad apple spoils the whole barrel. “It is not right for us to give the general impression and perception (because of one bad apple) that the Immigration Department is flawed.” The premier was at KLIA for about 30 minutes, and from the visit he found the management and operation of the Customs Department and the Immigration Department were under control. Ahmad greeting participants of the integrity course in Malacca yesterday. – BERNAMAPIC oManagement and operation of govt departments under control, says Anwar He said appropriate action would be taken to improve the situation and resolve any problems. Anwar said he found that only one of the seven luggage scanners operated by the Customs Department was in operation and wanted the situation rectified immediately. “I am also the finance minister, and the Customs Department is under my responsibility. Does it need to wait for the minister to come to find out that the machines are damaged? “If the cost is only a few million, we can approve it immediately and I believe that neither the KPPA (DirectorGeneral of Public Services Datuk Dr Zulkapli Mohamad) nor the MACC (Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission) will investigate (the immediate approval) because the situation is urgent.” He emphasised the need for top officers to go down and see the department’s operations for themselves and not make assumptions that everything is operating well. “The aim is to improve, not to find fault or criticise.” Meanwhile, Deputy Finance Minister I Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the repair of six faulty Customs Department scanners at KLIA began yesterday. He said the repairs would cost more than RM1 million and that the ministry had so far not faced any obstacles in approving repairs submitted by any government agency or department. “The allocations (for machine repairs) that we give to ministries to repair their machines and other equipment are included in the budget. It’s just that sometimes there are unforeseen things that need a longer process (for approval).” Ahmad was speaking after chairing the Royal Malaysian Customs Academy integrity course with the World Customs Organisation and the Regional Office for Capacity Building in Bukit Baru yesterday. In the meantime, Customs Department Director-General Datuk Zazuli Johan said the department does not solely rely on scanners as there are several other ways to ensure security at the country’s key entry points. He said one of the methods is the on-the-spot observation by immigration officers, Bernama reported. “Last month, for example, we even detected drugs. That means we can still do our job without the scanners.” In another development, Anwar said he received information that there were individuals eligible for citizenship being asked to pay a sum of money for the citizenship certificate and believed that the matter was being investigated. “There has to be strong and decisive action, otherwise it will hurt the image of the (National Registration Department) administration.” He also expressed the need for all weaknesses to be rectified so that they would not affect the image of the department, civil servants and the country. Express bus service for Samarahan, Santubong KUCHING: Starting this month, residents in Samarahan and Santubong divisions will get to enjoy the express bus service of Maraliner, a subsidiary of Majlis Amanah Rakyat, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Zahid Hamidi, who is also rural and regional development minister, said the pioneer project is a game changer in terms of public service for local residents in the two areas “Although the express bus service will not be profitable for the company, it will have social impact on the community, especially in areas not covered by other express bus services.” Speaking at a media conference after attending a coordination meeting with the state government here yesterday, he said following this pioneer venture, Maraliner service would also be extended to benefit more residents. “We see that in terms of accessibility for residents outside the city, this bus service will not only be connected by road but also through the Pan Borneo Highway, it is even proposed to go to Sabah through Brunei.” Ahmad Zahid had earlier chaired the coordination meeting with Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, which was a follow-up session to the meeting held here on March 7. The Rural and Regional Development Ministry said in a statement that among the matters discussed at the meeting was the latest status of projects that had been completed and implemented in Sarawak involving several state government agencies. The projects that have been successfully implemented as of June this year include five rural road projects involving an allocation of RM170.2 million, 14 rural water supply projects worth RM302.9 million as well as 294 rural road projects and social amenity programmes with an approved allocation of RM52.9 million. For next year, the ministry has applied for a total of 319 projects for Sarawak, including 96 new projects and 223 extension projects. “The number of projects increased by 32% compared with 2023 with total allocation requested being RM859.2 million.” – Bernama Ministry to facilitate probe into alleged graft SUNGAI PETANI: The Home Ministry will cooperate fully with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate allegations of corruption by immigration officers in handling foreign tourists at the country’s entry points. Its minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the ministry had no objection to the investigation by the commission. “The Home Ministry will extend our fullest cooperation to MACC,” he said after launching the national Rela 51stanniversary celebration at its northern region training centre in Bukit Selambau here yesterday. Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that the National Registration Department and the Immigration Department – both under the purview of the Home Ministry – are being investigated for corruption and power abuse. A news portal on Thursday reported that a commotion occurred at the KL International Airport (KLIA) when a minister allegedly attempted to rescue a female Chinese national who was denied entry into the country. The minister was said to have barged into the arrival hall without applying for a security pass. Commenting on the KLIA incident, Saifuddin said the inspection of visitors entering the country by immigration officers is a common practice, which is also a practice by immigration staff in other countries. He said there were cases of visitors given the “Not To Land” (NTL) notice, but the number was very small. “For example, for visitors from China, an average of only between 50 and 60 people are issued the NTL and there are also from other countries, but the number is very small.” – Bernama King, Queen offer condolences to kin of deceased pilgrims KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang diPertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah conveyed their condolences yesterday to the families of four Malaysian haj pilgrims who died while performing the pilgrimage in Mecca recently. 3 NEWS WITHOUT BORDERS theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 4, 2023 PETALING JAYA: A new study has found that Malaysia ranks fourth among the most affordable places to live in from 29 countries surveyed. Economist Dr Yeah Kim Leng said the Utility Bidder UK affordability index is based on the average cost of electricity, gas and housing benchmarked to income levels for cross-country comparisons. “While it broadly indicates cross-country differences, it is important to note that the index does not cover other living costs as captured within a typical household consumption basket. “It only takes into account the price of electricity, gas and housing against the gross national incomes per capita.” Yeah said it found Malaysia ranked second in having the cheapest electricity prices, with household electricity sold at a rate of US$0.05 (RM0.23) per kWh used. “Malaysia’s high score in electricity affordability is largely due to the producer and consumer subsidies provided by the government. “Although it recently reduced electricity subsidies, especially for high-income groups based on the amount of power consumed, the electricity tariffs for general consumers remain low compared with other countries. “It is the same for natural household gas prices. The household usage of natural gas is cheaper because of subsidies provided to independent power producers. The subsidies also help contribute to the low electricity prices for consumers,” said Yeah. The study found that household natural gas usage was priced at US$0.026 (RM0.12) per kWh, which is ranked third after Argentina and Belarus. Yeah, a member of the advisory body for the Finance Ministry, said relative affordability is based on the property price-to-income ratio. “Many other countries had implemented a near-zero or low-interest rate environment after the 2008 global financial crisis. Low-interest rates tend to increase demand for property, which will drive prices upwards. However, compared with the rising property prices in many other countries, those in Malaysia have been on a downward trend for many years, until it went up slightly recently.” According to the National Property Information Centre, data from the second quarter of last year showed that average home prices stood at RM439,084 compared with RM444,230 in the first quarter of that year. Yeah said while prices have been gradually decreasing, the distribution of average income per capita was still unequal. He added that it is not surprising that Malaysia was ranked eighth in housing affordability with a score of 8.1. This is because while prices have been going down, low and middle-income Malaysians still find it beyond their reach. He said although Malaysia has been ranked top four in the list of most affordable countries to live in, there is still more to be done to improve affordability and cost of living. “The government should continue to foster market competition and help ease the costs of starting or doing business by minimising regulatory costs and helping to foster a business-friendly environment. “Foreigners will want to participate in the Malaysian workforce if the cost of living in the country is cheap and affordable. “Other measures can include encouraging entrepreneurship, adopting technology and value-adding activities through innovation that will raise the efficiency and productivity of the country’s production systems and supply chains.” Johor Umno to hold state progress talks JOHOR BAHRU: Umno here will hold a convention to discuss matters regarding state development and progress, especially involving the position of the Malays. Johor Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the state-level convention is expected to be held after the completion of state polls in six states, adding that the date and venue will be announced by the committee’s secretary Datuk Abdul Halim Suleiman. “The convention needs to be held to pay attention to and discuss (the matters) with grassroots leadership and government representatives so that continuing efforts would be done to defend the position of the Malays,” he said after chairing the Johor Umno liaison committee meeting here on Sunday. The meeting was also attended by its deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan. Mohamed Khaled, who is also higher education minister, said the Malays in Johor have various aspirations and Umno is responsible for realising them. “Umno, through Barisan Nasional, which forms the state government, needs to know what the aspirations are and if they can be translated. “Our commitment is to ensure that we can effectively represent the Malays, particularly in Johor. “One way to strengthen our effectiveness and fight to be on the right track is through having a convention,” he said. The last Johor Umno convention was held on Oct 5, 2019, which was officiated at by Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. – Bernama Malaysia ranked fourth most affordable country oPlacing prompts greater need for efforts to improve cost of living: Expert RM200m dam to be ready by end 2024 ALOR GAJAH: Construction works at the Sungai Jernih Dam here has achieved 10% progress, and the nearly RM200 million project is expected to be completed in November next year. State Public Works, Infrastructure, Public Amenities and Transport Committee chairman Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer said the project has been running smoothly as scheduled. “Works on the Sungai Jernih Dam project started later than the prescribed schedule, but the contractor can catch up,” he said after visiting the Durian Tunggal Dam to check on the water supply situation here yesterday. The dam, with a capacity of 13,000 million litres, is expected to support an increase in population until 2030, thus solving the water supply issue in the state during long droughts. In January 2020, the state government was forced to implement water rationing in stages during prolonged dry and hot weather after three existing dams could not supply sufficient water to the people in Malacca. Hameed said there was no need for water rationing as water supply in the three dams is expected to last until November. He added that the capacity at the Durian Tunggal Dam in Alor Gajah is at the 90% mark, while the capacity of the Jus and Asahan dams in Jasin is at 96% and 93% respectively. “Water rationing will only be done if the capacity falls below the 70% mark. “We expect the water supply in Malacca will last until November, well past the El Nino phenomenon, which is predicted to last until September.” Hameed also said the Water Regulatory Body and Syarikat Air Melaka Berhad have implemented various proactive measures to ensure that water in the three dams is sufficient for the state, including channelling 160 million litres of water daily from Sungai Gersik in Johor to the dams. – Bernama BN candidate appeals court ruling PUTRAJAYA: Barisan Nasional candidate Jasmira Othman has gone to the Federal Court to appeal against the Election Court ruling in upholding PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s victory in the Marang parliamentary constituency during the 15th general election (GE15). Lawyer Mohamed Baharudeen Mohamed Ariff, representing Jasmira, said the notice of appeal was filed on June 28. On June 27, the Election Court in Terengganu dismissed the election petition filed by Jasmira to challenge Abdul Hadi’s victory. Judge Datuk Hassan Abdul Ghani held that Jasmira failed to prove that there were elements of corruption according to the Election Offences Act 1954. Daniel added that there should be an announcement if any new ruling is enforced, although he was informed by Customs officers that the changes started last month. A Labuan Customs officer confirmed his statement, adding that four cans is equivalent to a litre of liquor. “Actually, it is not a new ruling. It has been in the Customs duty order all along. 6 theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 4, 2023 NEWS WITHOUT BORDERS /thesuntelegram FOLLOW ON TELEGRAM SCAN ME Standoff with West to last decades: Russia MOSCOW: Russia’s former president Dmitry Medvedev has warned that the confrontation with the West will last decades and that its conflict with Ukraine could become permanent. Now deputy head of the Security Council, his views reflect some of the thinking at the Kremlin’s top level, according to Russian officials. In an article for the government’s Rossiiskaya Gazeta newspaper, he said tensions between Russia and the West were “much worse” than during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis when the world teetered on the edge of a nuclear conflagration. A nuclear war was “quite probable” but was unlikely to have any winners, said Medvedev, who has said Western support for Ukraine increases the chances of nuclear conflict. He cited sharp differences over Ukraine, the direction of humankind, and the way the world order was structured. “One thing that politicians of all stripes do not like to admit: such an Apocalypse is not only possible, but also quite probable,” wrote Medvedev. He said Moscow is still committed to stopping Ukraine join Nato. “Our goal is to eliminate the threat of Ukraine’s membership in Nato. And we will achieve it. One way or another.” Given Nato’s rule about not admitting countries entangled in territorial conflicts, he said the conflict with Ukraine could become “permanent” given its existential nature for Moscow. The only way to de-escalate tensions between Russia and the West was to enter into tough negotiations, he said. “The confrontation will be very long and it is too late to tame the recalcitrants (i.e. US). “The confrontation will last for decades.” – Reuters B R I E F SVENEZUELA PILOT DIES AS JET CRASHES CARACAS: A pilot was killed on Sunday when a Russian-made fighter jet crashed in a mountainous area in northern Venezuela during practice exercises ahead of a parade to mark the country’s independence, President Nicolas Maduro said. “I regret to inform that during the practice manoeuvres ... an aircraft of our Bolivarian Military Aviation fell to the ground, causing the physical loss of the distinguished pilot Col Paulino Jose Millan Sabino,” he tweeted. The Sukhoi-30 had two crew members. Both managed to eject, but Sabino “died when he fell to the ground”, the armed forces added. – AFP GERMAN FAR-RIGHT PARTY WINS AGAIN BERLIN: Germany’s far-right AfD notched up another first on Sunday when its candidate was elected a town mayor, in a further boost for the anti-immigration party. The Alternative for Germany has surged to record highs in opinion polls, and the latest result comes just a week after they won their first district election. Hannes Loth was elected Raguhn-Jessnitz mayor in a run-off against independent candidate Nils Naumann, according to results on the town’s Facebook page. Loth, reportedly a 42-year-old farmer, won 51.1% of the vote against 48.9% for Naumann in the town of about 9,000 inhabitants. – AFP Climate change spells ‘terrifying’ future: UN GENEVA: Climate change threatens to deliver a “truly terrifying” dystopian future of hunger and suffering, the United Nations’ human rights chief warned yesterday. Volker Turk slammed world leaders for only thinking of the short term while dealing with the climate crisis. Turk told a UN Human Rights Council debate on the right to food that extreme weather events were wiping out crops, herds and ecosystems, making it impossible for communities to rebuild and support themselves. “More than 828 million people faced hunger in 2021. “And climate change is projected to place up to 80 million more people at risk of hunger by the oHuman rights chief criticises world leaders for short term thinking middle of this century,” said Turk. “Our environment is burning. It’s melting. It’s flooding. It’s depleting. It’s drying. It’s dying,” he said, evoking a “dystopian future”. “Addressing climate change is a human rights issue ... there is still time to act. But that time is now.” The 2015 Paris Agreement saw countries agree to cap global warming at “well below” 2°C above average levels measured between 1850 and 1900 – and 1.5°C if possible. The global mean temperature last year was 1.15°C above the 1850-1900 average. On current policy trends, the Donations for cop who sparked riots top €850,000 PARIS: A collection for a French policeman who sparked nationwide riots last week by shooting a teenager dead during a traffic stop reached more than €850,000 (RM4.3 million) yesterday. Just under 40,000 people had made donations to the online fund set up on the website Gofundme.com by a far-right media commentator. The collection easily outstripped another one for the family of the dead 17-year-old Nahel M. Nahel’s grandmother said she was “heartbroken” by the support shown for the police officer when she was asked about it on Sunday. “He took the life of my grandson. This man must pay, the same as everyone,” she told the BFM channel. “I have confidence in the justice system. I believe in justice.” Several politicians from the centrist ruling party and the left wing condemned the collection launched by far-right commentator Jean Messiha, who is close to anti-Islam politician Eric Zemmour. “Jean Messiha is playing with fire,” ruling party MP Eric Bothorel wrote on Twitter, calling it “indecent and scandalous”. The head of the Socialist party, Olivier Faure, addressed a message to Gofundme, saying they were facilitating a “shameful” collection. Senior hard-left lawmaker Mathilde Panot highlighted how a collection for a former boxer who had punched several police officers during “Yellow Vest” anti-government demonstrations in 2019 had been quickly closed by authorities. “Killing a young North African, in France in 2023, can earn you a lot of money,” she wrote. Nahel was of Algerian origin. The fund had reached €853,000 by yesterday morning, with 37,874 people having contributed money. The biggest individual donation was €3,000. The policeman, named in French media as Florian M., has been detained and charged with voluntary manslaughter. In a video of the shooting, he can be seen with a colleague stopping a Mercedes which Nahel was driving without a licence in the western Paris suburb of Nanterre last week. The officer has his weapon drawn and shoots Nahel at point-blank range as the car drives off. Another teenager in the car told media after that the officers also hit Nahel with the butts of their guns before firing. – AFP planet will be 2.8°C warmer by the end of the century, according to the UN’s IPCC climate science advisory panel. “We must not deliver this future of hunger and suffering to our children, and their children. And we don’t have to,” Volk said. “We, the generation with the most powerful technological tools in history, have the capacity to change it.” Turk said world leaders “perform the choreography of deciding to act and promising to act and then get stuck in the short term”. He called for an end to “senseless subsidies” of the fossil fuel industry, and said the Dubai COP28 climate summit in November and December needed to be the “decisive game-changer that we so badly need”. Turk urged the world to “shun the green-washers” as well as those who cast doubt on climate science, driven by their own greed. With drones clearly audible overhead and the sounds of gunfire and explosives heard across the city hours after the strikes, the Jenin Brigades, a unit made up of various groups based in the city’s crowded refugee camp, said it was engaging the Israeli forces and shot down one of the unmanned aircraft. At times during the morning, at least six drones could be seen circling over the city and the adjoining camp, a densely packed area housing around 14,000 refugees in less than half a square kilometre. The camp has been at the heart of an escalating spiral of violence across the West Bank that has triggered mounting alarm from Washington to the Arab world, without so far opening the way to a resumption of negotiations that have been stalled for almost a decade. For more than a year, army raids in cities like Jenin have become routine, while there have been rampages by Jewish settler mobs against Palestinian villages. “What is going on in the refugee camp is real war,” said Palestinian ambulance driver Khaled Alahmad, describing the fighting yesterday. “There were strikes from the sky targeting the camp, every time we drive in, around five to seven ambulances and we come back full with injured people.” The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed at least seven people had been killed and 27 wounded in Jenin, while another man was killed in the city of Ramallah after being shot in the head at a checkpoint. – Reuters Residents protesting the proposed expansion of the Ultra Low Emissions Zone tariff on polluting vehicles at Marble Arch in London. – REUTERSPIC

7 NEWS WITHOUT BORDERS theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 4, 2023 Vietnam bans ‘Barbie’ movie over map HANOI: Vietnam has banned Warner Bros’ highly-anticipated film Barbie from domestic distribution over a scene featuring a map that shows Beijing’s unilaterally claimed territory in the South China Sea, state media reported yesterday. The U-shaped “nine-dash line” is used on Chinese maps to illustrate its claims over vast areas of the South China Sea, including swathes of what Vietnam considers its continental shelf, where it has awarded oil concessions. Barbie is the latest movie to be banned in Vietnam for depicting China’s controversial nine-dash line, which was repudiated in an international arbitration ruling by a court in The Hague in 2016. China refuses to recognise the ruling. In 2019, the Vietnamese government pulled DreamWorks’ animated film Abominable and last year it banned Sony’s action movie Unchartered for the same reason. Netflix also removed an Australian spy drama Pine Gap in 2021. Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, was originally slated to open in Vietnam on July 21, the same date as in the United States, according to state-run Tuoi Tre newspaper. “We do not grant licence for the American movie Barbie to release in Vietnam because it contains the offending image of the nine-dash line,” the paper reported, citing Vi Kien Thanh, who heads the Department of Cinema, a government body in charge of licensing and censoring foreign films. Warner Bros did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Vietnam and China have long had overlapping territorial claims to a potentially energy-rich stretch in the South China Sea. The Southeast Asian country has repeatedly accused Chinese vessels of violating its sovereignty. – Reuters Fire injures four in Tokyo building TOKYO: Four people were injured in a blast and a blaze in a central Tokyo building yesterday, the city’s fire department said, with footage showing flames and smoke emerging from a second-floor business. The fire started in a building in a restaurant area of the bustling Shimbashi district at 3.20pm (2.20pm in Malaysia). “The sound of an explosion was also heard. A total of 32 fire trucks are at the scene,” a fire department spokesman told AFP, declining to be named. “Four people are injured, three of whom are conscious,” he said, adding no details were yet available on the fourth person. Officials are investigating the cause of the fire. “The sound was deafening. It was as if something huge was dropped from the top of the building. It was an incredible bang,” a male eyewitness told public broadcaster NHK. “Pieces of paper were scattered all over at the nearby intersection. “From the way they were scattered, I immediately knew it was an explosion.” – AFP Jokowi warns Cabinet against overspending JAKARTA: Indonesian President Joko Widodo yesterday urged his ministers to maintain a “healthy” state budget in anticipation of global geopolitical and economic risks and as the country gears up for elections next year. Speaking during a routine Cabinet meeting, Jokowi, as the president is known, highlighted outsized spending by security agencies, including the Defence Ministry which has been modernising its ageing military equipment. “We have to maintain a healthy state budget. We need to be focused and alert for the risk of crisis,” Jokowi said, warning that ministers must “be careful on purchasing goods”. He also highlighted high spending by the national police and intelligence agencies. Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto, who is set to mount a third bid for the presidency next year, in January finalised a US$800 million deal to buy 12 Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets, which some critics said were too old. Indonesia also bought 42 Rafale fighter jets for US$8.1 billion in February and is in the advanced stages of finalising a deal to buy F-15 fighter jets, according to Prabowo. The government is targeting a 2023 budget deficit of 2.84% of GDP. Jokowi also urged his ministers to help maintain political and economic stability ahead of the 2024 polls when the world’s third-largest democracy will choose lawmakers and a new president. – AFP B R I E F SARREST WARRANTS ISSUED FOR EIGHT HK ACTIVISTS HONG KONG: Police here yesterday accused eight overseas-based activists of serious national security offences, including foreign collusion and incitement to secession and offered rewards for information leading to any arrest. The accused are activists Nathan Law, Anna Kwok and Finn Lau, former lawmakers Dennis Kwok and Ted Hui, lawyer and legal scholar Kevin Yam, unionist Mung Siu-tat, and online commentator Yuan Gong-yi, police said. Issuing wanted notices and rewards of HK$1 million (RM600,000) each, police said the assets of the accused would be frozen where possible and they warned the public not to support them financially. – Reuters PAKISTAN EXPECTING HEAVY MONSOON RAIN ISLAMABAD: Heavy monsoon rain is expected to hit Pakistan today and last for several days, the weather office said, raising the risk of flooding in areas still recovering from a devastating deluge last year. Heavy thunder and rain was expected in Islamabad as well as in the cities of Lahore and Peshawar, spreading to other areas until Saturday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said. The weather office warned that flooding is possible in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, and Lahore, with the risk of flash floods in hilly western areas late this week. – Reuters Yellen to visit China this week WASHINGTON: Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is set to visit Beijing this week, the United States said on Sunday, marking the second trip by a Cabinet official to China since ties between the world’s top two economies deteriorated earlier this year. Yellen is expected to discuss with her counterparts the importance for both countries “to responsibly manage our relationship, communicate directly about areas of concern, and work together to address global challenges”, said the Treasury Department in a statement. Yellen’s planned July 6 to 9 trip comes just weeks after Secretary of State Antony Blinken met China’s President Xi Jinping and Foreign Minister Qin Gang in Beijing in June. Blinken was the highest-ranking US official to visit the Chinese capital in nearly five years, and Xi said on the rare trip that he saw headway in the strained relationship between Washington and Beijing. In Beijing, Yellen will discuss how the US views its economic relationship with China, a senior Treasury official said on Sunday. She will meet with senior China officials and leading US firms, the American spokesman said without providing specifics. While the US seeks to secure its national security interests and protect human rights, actions to this effect are “not intended to gain economic advantage over China”, the official added. Washington also looks towards “healthy” ties with Beijing and does not seek to decouple the economies, while pursuing cooperation on urgent challenges like climate change and debt distress, the official said. The US does not expect “significant breakthrough” from this initial trip, but it does oUS govt trying to limit deterioration of economic relationship, says analyst aim to build longer-term channels of communication with China, he added. “I think the US government is clearly trying to put some floor under the deterioration of the economic relationship,” Council on Foreign Relations senior fellow Edward Alden told AFP, speaking on the Treasury secretary’s intentions to visit China. A Yellen trip could “restart a steady pattern of engagement at lower levels”, he said, adding that the US has shifted from being ambiguous about how far it was supporting decoupling to explicitly adopting a strategy of “derisking” instead. This means “focusing on a narrower range of items that have strategic importance, trying to build fences around those items, but otherwise trying to continue to nurture a reasonably robust US-China economic relationship”, Alden said. But observers do not expect a quick resolution to tensions. President Joe Biden’s administration is considering a programme to restrict certain US outbound investments involving sensitive technology with key national security implications – an issue that has riled Chinese officials. Other possible sticking points include amendments to China’s anti-espionage law which recently broadened the definition of spying while banning the transfer of information relating to national security – a move that has spooked foreign and domestic businesses. While significant disagreements may not be resolved in a single trip, the US seeks to deepen and increase the frequency of communication with China and to “stabilise ties”, avoiding miscommunication and expanding collaboration where possible, the official said. For the US, discussions with officials from the world’s second biggest economy “are important to help spur stronger global economic growth and to tackle the mounting debt problem of the Global South”, said Asia Society Policy Institute vice-president Wendy Cutler. – AFP TORRENTIAL WATERS ... 8 theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 4, 2023 SPEAK UP @thesundaily FOLLOW ON TWITTER SCAN ME Unleashing power of AI S INCE the beginning of 2023, the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, including ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs), has brought forth immense possibilities for people. These LLMs have the potential to revolutionise various aspects of our lives, spanning healthcare, finance, education, transportation and more. Users of LLMs have been actively engaging in virtual forums and social media platforms, sharing innovative and entrepreneurial concepts. These discussions encompass a wide spectrum of ideas, ranging from the creation of AI-generated children’s storybooks to collaborative coding practices, incorporating LLMs into new software systems and generating innovative business ideas. Just as Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press in the 15th century made literature and literacy more accessible, thereby advancing humanity and civilisation during the Renaissance, similarly, LLMs have the potential to improve decentralised learning. By enabling inquisitive individuals to fully leverage knowledge and automation, LLMs can facilitate the creation of societal value. Some fear the adoption of AI tools will result in job displacement. However, it is worth noting that throughout history, the introduction of transformative technologies, such as calculators and computers, initially resulted in job losses, such as those of typists and switchboard operators. Nevertheless, these advancements ultimately paved the way for the creation of new employment opportunities as technology enhanced efficiency and productivity. The implementation of a contemporary point-of-sales system in a retail store or restaurant has rendered several jobs obsolete. However, the utilisation of such technology has significantly improved productivity and efficiency by facilitating data collection, streamlining accounting processes and managing inventory in real time. Consequently, retail owners have gained better control over their businesses. With this in mind, I firmly believe that AI will serve as a catalyst for fostering future opportunities and driving economic growth. For Malaysia to progress further, I recommend the following: 1. Adopt AI with an open heart Adopting and utilising AI technology will enable individuals and organisations to remain competitive. By educating ourselves on AI technologies, we can access information instantly and leverage virtual assistants to automate our routine work. This, in turn, will free up our creative minds to innovate and generate new ideas for the future. 2. Promote use of AI tools Since ChatGPT was introduced, I have encouraged my family and friends to embrace it. Interestingly, youngsters have adapted well to it while older users need motivation, encouragement and assistance to use AI tools. As a community, we need programmes to keep everyone informed on the advancement of technology. This way, we can bridge the technological divide in society and ensure that it does not become too wide. 3. Improve internet access The disparity in internet access between rural and urban areas poses a notable obstacle to the widespread adoption of AI, particularly for individuals residing in rural areas. Since the use of LLMs and other AI products relies heavily on data, internet availability becomes a critical factor. The limited internet access in rural areas will impede the adoption of AI, leading to an educational gap between rural and urban communities. Urban students will have the opportunity to engage in personalised learning through AI tools while their rural counterparts will be deprived of such access. Consequently, it is imperative to address this disparity and ensure that the benefits of AI are accessible to all individuals, regardless of their geographic location. 4. Innovate with AI tools The integration of AI tools will offer significant benefits to both individuals and organisations. AI can help businesses make data-driven decisions, automate repetitive tasks and enhance customer experience. Similarly, individuals can use AI tools for personal productivity, such as language translation or predictive text. Those who adopt AI tools will be rewarded proportionally as they will have access to better opportunities, increased efficiency and improved decisionmaking capabilities. Conversely, individuals who do not embrace AI risk being left behind as they will not have access to the benefits of technology. This gap will exacerbate existing inequalities, such as disparities in income or education levels. The adoption of AI should be accessible to all, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds. Achieving this goal necessitates the implementation of policies that promote AI and the provision of education and training opportunities to individuals and organisations. 5. Address ethical concerns With the increasing use of AI, it is imperative to confront ethical concerns associated with it, including algorithmic biases, privacy issues and data security. It is essential to ensure that AI is developed and used ethically and responsibly, with proper regulations and guidelines in place. Such measures will not only ensure the protection of individual rights and privacy but also build trust among users and stakeholders. Just as the printing press unlocked new opportunities and propelled civilisation forward, the adoption of AI promises the same. However, it is crucial to address the challenges and considerations associated with its adoption, such as job displacement, internet access inequality, ethical concerns and the need for innovation and education. By addressing these issues and ensuring that the adoption of AI is equitable, ethical and sustainable, Malaysia can leverage the benefits of this transformative technology and propel forward into a more innovative and prosperous future. According to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (2010), the term “credible” refers to someone who can be believed in or trusted. He is a person who guides and oversees a group of people, serving as the head of a country or organisation. A credible leader can be described as someone who improves the lives of his followers and advances the system they live in. He does not need a formal title. The real test of this chosen or elected leader lies in the extent to which his followers adhere to his words or instructions. Notwithstanding other leadership qualities, he should be a trustworthy person. This means he is consistent in what he says and does. He does not hide anything from his followers and is a person of integrity. This entails the quality of being honest. To be a good and credible leader, one has to possess business and financial acumen. We wish to have such leaders, although they may be hard to come by. It is frustrating to witness a leader delivering a speech on a topic about which he has limited knowledge. His words come across as mere rhetoric, lacking a genuine understanding of the subject matter. This behaviour demonstrates a lack of respect for the educated audience in attendance at an event. A credible leader should demonstrate high ethical principles, possessing the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. He should maintain a pristine reputation and is untainted by any perceived involvement in sexual misconduct, corruption or abuse of power. Additionally, a leader is expected to exemplify the qualities of a responsible and devoted family person. When a leader fulfils his responsibilities with determination and resilience, striving to positively impact those around him, he embodies the qualities of a credible leader. Meeting the aforementioned criteria will make him a valuable asset to the nation. I hope credible leaders will be chosen in the upcoming state elections as they can contribute to the advancement of our nation and preserve unity among the people. 9 SPEAK UP theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 4, 2023 Resolve homegrown stateless issue WHILE Malaysia is committed to resolving the citizenship issue, the identity dilemma of the homegrown stateless community in the country, given its size, the nature of the challenges faced and the implications to the nation, should no longer be overlooked. The Home Ministry stated earlier this year that it had received around 150,000 citizenship applications and is expected to process at least 10,000 of them. The obtainment of Malaysian citizenship is provided by law under Articles 14, 15, 15A, 16 and 19 of the Federal Constitution. Anyone without a nationality is regarded as “stateless”. At least one out of three individuals in Sabah has been unsuccessful in obtaining Malaysian citizenship, hence, substantially restricting the person’s access to opportunities and civil rights (“Documenting the Undocumented: The Struggle for a Legal Identity”, New Naratif, April 12). In a study conducted by Rodziana Mohamed Razali, it was found that out of the 2,316,963 (72.3%) Malaysians in Sabah, 889,779 (27.7%) were stateless as of 2010 (“Addressing Statelessness in Malaysia: New Hope and Remaining Challenges”, Institute for Statelessness Inclusion, 2017). Despite Malaysia’s efforts to address the issue of those who are stateless, there are still notable gaps accorded to the homegrown stateless community in Malaysia. They are often regarded as or mistaken for refugees, asylum seekers or undocumented migrants. It is crucial to distinguish between these two groups: I. “Homegrown stateless” is an individual born and raised in a specific country but not considered as a national by the state under the law (de jure stateless) II. Undocumented migrants, refugees, etc. are nationals of different countries, who are unable to seek protection within their home country, who flee to neighbouring countries (de facto stateless) Most homegrown stateless individuals in Malaysia are from East Malaysia (Sabahans and Sarawakians), Tamil Indians (from estates and plantations), from the Chinese community and the indigenous (Orang Asli) community. According to a recent report by the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam), there are several reasons why a person is considered stateless in Malaysia (“Human rights and statelessness in Peninsular Malaysia”, Suhakam): I. Individuals with a long-standing residence since pre-independence and their descendants (mainly from the Chinese and Indian communities) II. Individuals who lack legal documentation (e.g. birth certificate) III. Abandoned and orphaned children who were born and raised in Malaysia IV. Children born out of wedlock or illegitimate children V. Parents who had failed to register the birth of their children The status of statelessness exposes this minority community to oppression, including infringement of basic human rights, restricted liberty of movement, forced displacement, restriction to land ownership, limited job opportunities and also access to education and healthcare services. Apart from that, they are also vulnerable to arbitrary detention. Based on a study conducted by activisit Mary Anne K. Baltazar et al. on children of Filipino descent in Sabah, it was found that over 60% of respondents expressed feelings of unease due to various factors, including concerns about potential detention and a lack of identity (“Children at-risk of statelessness and their constraints to citizenship, ShapeSea, June 2019). In addition, due to the lack of legal rights, this marginalised community falls further into the country’s lowerincome group (B40). Frequently, the dilemma of this community is only looked at and resolved when the issue is raised on social media. Many families in this community are vulnerable to “generational statelessness”, where statelessness runs for generations. For example, research by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees identified a sizable number of Indian-Tamil population residing in Malaysia for many generations without any documents to confirm their citizenship or connection to the nation. During a registration effort, they discovered at least 12,400 stateless individuals who are descendants of IndianTamil origin in Malaysia. As reported by a local media recently, a family had filed a lawsuit against the government for withholding citizenship to three generations of the family despite having roots in Malaysia going back five generations (“A Perak family’s suffering: Three generations, all stateless, go to court to be Malaysians”, Malay Mail, June 17). Impact of statelessness Without legal identity, children receive little or no access to healthcare services and education – the two elements vital for a child’s development and future well-being. Children from the stateless community are not entitled to reduced fees at a polyclinic, free vaccinations or childcare subsidies. Considering that most stateless families in Malaysia are from the lowincome group, they are unable to spend on health, insurance schemes or private education for their children. In terms of education, schools, such as Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih and the Professional Circular 1/2009 policy, have aided by providing fundamental education for stateless children. However, the Professional Circular 1/2009 policy has a flaw in that it only enables undocumented children with at least one Malaysian citizen parent to enrol in public or government-aided schools. Recently, the caretaker Education minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry is working on the process of schooling for undocumented children. Comparatively, in T h a i l a n d , p r i m a r y education is compulsory regardless of the status of c i t i z e n s h i p , a n d children have the right to receive 12 years of free access to education. In addition, school fees, subsidies for school uniforms, textbooks and other school needs are also provided by the Thai government (“A Legal Analysis of Stateless Children and their Rights to Education in Malaysia: A Comparative Study with Thailand”, International Journal of Academic Research in Progressive Education and Development, 2022). Malaysian policymakers should focus on a holistic and inclusive approach, making primary and secondary education compulsory for all children and providing the required assistance to all students regardless of their national status. With the right to education denied, these children are missing out on opportunities, such as a better standard of living in terms of higher income and an overall healthier lifestyle, and this is a potential human capital loss for the nation. Even if they are part of it, many do not have access to medical care and job opportunities as people without citizenship are often discriminated and stigmatised in the community. It is recommended that the Health Ministry focuses on provisions of universal healthcare services for the homegrown stateless community in Malaysia, particularly the health and well-being of children. The government should establish systematic and efficient approaches and policies for identifying and addressing statelessness, so that these individuals will not be left in limbo. Emir Research proposes the following recommendations: 1. Earmark central, integrated and systematic procedure and database on citizenship, passes and visas So far, various identity registration documents have been used to register stateless and undocumented migrants, especially in East Malaysia. Some examples include documents, such as the IMM13, Kad Burung-Burung, Sijil Banci, Pas Sementara Sarawak and the Pas Sementara Sabah. Instead of having different documents for immigrants from different countries, state governments of East Malaysia should standardise and centralise identity registration documents. Having a centralised database will simplify and smoothen the application process for both citizenships and other permit passes in the country and assist in identifying stateless individuals for targeted intervention programmes. 2. Expand existing mobile court programme to Peninsular Malaysia In East Malaysia, since courthouses are only located in big towns and the less fortunate cannot afford to travel to court, the then chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak, Tan Sri Richard Malanjum, held hearings in the districts for convenience. Cases heard by the mobile court include criminal charges, such as illegal logging, cases related to citizenship, late registration of deaths and births, marriage, family-related and inheritance concerns. For instance, the Sabah mobile court has now served over 66 locations in Sabah, thanks to this initiative, and it is spreading throughout the area. Peninsular Malaysia should also adopt a similar approach in focusing on a highly saturated homegrown stateless population, specifically in urban poor, rural and remote areas of West Malaysia. 3. Enhance pre-existing policies and regulations with respect to education Firstly, amend Article 12 of the Federal Constitution by substituting the word “citizen” with “all residing in Malaysia regardless of their nationality”. Simultaneously, the government should ratify Article 28(1)(a) of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Article 28(1)(a) states as follows: “Make primary education compulsory and available, and free to all.” Given that the Education Ministry is trying to include undocumented children in the education system, it is vital for the government to ratify this subsection. 4. Members of Parliament (MPs) should play active role in providing on-ground assistance and advocating at the parliament level to eradicate homegrown statelessness Although this marginalised population lacks political rights, MPs are, nonetheless, accountable for ensuring the welfare and well-being of people in their constituency as the chosen representatives of the people. Apart from being a social concern, persistent ignorance of this community will have a negative impact on the economy as it often leads to unemployment and poverty, which will pressure this population and result in contributors of a lowincome and below-poverty line community in the country. Furthermore, it will gravely jeopardise Malaysia’s capacity to attain Goal 16 (target nine) of the Sustainable Development Goals, which stipulates that legal identity should be provided for all by 2030. By granting citizenship to stateless persons, the nation’s gross domestic product can be vastly improved while the rights and well-being of the marginalised community can be protected. In conclusion, to steer clear of a chicken-and-egg scenario, it is important for the state and federal governments to progressively resolve the legal status of Malaysia’s native stateless population. 10 HEALTH & WELLNESS theSun LYFE ON TUESDAY | JULY 4, 2023 oMostly naked to the human eye, every day humans ingest, inhale or come in contact with microplastics TINY pieces of plastic have been found littered throughout human bodies, trapped in our lungs and laced through our blood, but the long-term health effects of this exposure remain unclear. Every day humans ingest, inhale or otherwise come in contact with microplastics and plastic pollution less than five millimetres (0.2 inches) in diameter that is mostly invisible to the naked eye. Microplastics have been found most everywhere on Earth, from the deepest oceans to the highest mountains, as well as in the air, water, soil and food chain. But in the last couple of years scientists have discovered microplastics not just throughout nature but also throughout human bodies, detecting it in lungs, livers – even in placentas. Last year a Dutch study became the first to identify microplastics in human blood. While scientists have urged caution due to the study’s small sample size, the presence of microplastics could suggest it is being transported through the bloodstream into organs. But for now, the data remain incomplete on the health effects of microplastics, a complex cocktail of polymers and chemicals that could smuggle in other contaminants in what is called the “Trojan Horse” effect. Insidious and dangerous Xavier Coumoul, a toxicologist at French medical research institute INSERM, told AFP that there has been “more and more research” in the area over the last decade. But he said that research had been late to get started because – similar to global warming – the “insidious changes” crept up so slowly. “We do not know whether our level of exposure will lead to chronic or acute illnesses in the long term – but we can legitimately ask the question,” he said. Research has shown that microplastics have a range of detrimental effects on the health of animals, including an increase in inflammation, oxidative stress, and damage to cells. “Both in human and mice lung tissues, we have seen an inhibitory effect on development after putting plastic fibres inside organoids, minilungs grown” from stem cells, said Barbro Melgert, a respiratory immunologist at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. “This effect seemed not to be caused by the plastic itself, but by something leaking from the (plastic particles), some chemicals added,” she said. “But we don’t know exactly what chemical was involved,“ she said. “It’s very difficult to find out, especially with low quantities.” Indeed, the roles that the shape, size and type of microplastic – as well as additives – remain poorly understood. But researchers are Diabetes cases to double to 1.3 billion by 2050 THE number of people suffering from diabetes worldwide will more than double to 1.3 billion by 2050 driven by structural racism and gaping inequality between countries, new research predicted on 23 June 2023. Every country on the globe will see an increase in the number of patients with the chronic disease, according to the most comprehensive analysis of global data projecting out to 2050. Some 529 million people were estimated to already be living with diabetes, one of the top 10 causes of death and disability. That number – 95 per cent of which are cases of type 2 diabetes – will top 1.3 billion in less than three decades, according to a study published in the Lancet journal. High body mass index – an indication that people could be overweight – was linked to more than half of deaths and disability from diabetes. Other factors included people’s diets, exercise, smoking, and alcohol. Liane Ong, lead research scientist at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) and first author of one of the studies, said one factor was how diets had changed. “Over the course of 30 years, different countries have really migrated from traditional food habits – maybe eating more fruits and vegetables, eating healthier greens – to more highly processed foods,“ she told AFP. The research also estimated that by 2045, three quarters of adults with diabetes will live in low and middleincome countries. But even in wealthy countries such as the United States, diabetes rates were almost 1.5 times higher among minorities such as black, Hispanic, Asian or Native Americans, a separate Lancet study said. Study co-author Leonard Egede, of the Medical College of Wisconsin, blamed a “cascade of widening diabetes inequity”. “Racist policies such as residential segregation affect where people live, their access to sufficient and healthy food and health care services,“ he said in a statement. Ong said “the challenge is that we don’t really see one type of intervention that’s going to fix everything”. Instead, fighting diabetes will require longterm planning, investment, and attention from countries around the globe, she said. In an editorial, the Lancet said that “the world has failed to understand the social nature of diabetes and underestimated the true scale and threat the disease poses.” “Diabetes will be a defining disease of this century,“ it added. – ETX STUDIO Microplastics have been found most everywhere on Earth, from the deepest oceans to the highest mountains, as well as in the air, water, soil and the food chain. – ETX STUDIO working on it. Last week, a study in the journal Physics of Fluid modelled how different sizes of inhaled microplastics rattled through human airways, finding that they tended to collect in the nasal cavity Some 529 million people were estimated to already be living with diabetes, one of the top 10 causes of death and disability. – ETX STUDIO The race to identify health effects of microplastics or in the back of the throat. A looming tipping point It is also unclear how much microplastics individual people are exposed to. “We don’t really know how much microplastics we breathe, there’s not a lot of studies,” Melgert said, adding that research over longer time periods was needed. The World Wildlife Fund made headlines in 2019 by estimating that people ingest around five grams of plastic a week, the equivalent of a credit card. The methodology and findings of the study the WWF was citing have been contested, and other research has indicated a lower level of individual exposure. But experts are still sounding the alarm. Coumoul compared microplastics to pesticides, saying “it has sometimes taken a long time to identify the long-term risk to humans”. “Let’s try to prevent a time bomb,” Melgert said. And an even greater tidal wave of plastic looms on the horizon. On current trends, annual production of fossil-fuel plastic will nearly triple by 2060 to 1.2 billion tonnes. Melgert warned that humanity’s ever-increasing production of plastic means that we could soon “pass a critical limit” for human exposure. Earlier this month, there was some rare goods news in the fight against plastic pollution. After five days of gruelling talks, 175 nations gathered in Paris agreed to reveal the first draft of a muchanticipated plastic pollution treaty by the end of November. For now, experts recommend that people limit their exposure to microplastics by ventilating their homes, not eating out of plastic containers, and avoiding synthetic textiles such as polyester. – ETX STUDIO

Teo said that Wind Information would be able to provide financial information services similar to Bloomberg outside China after it established itself in Malaysia. “The company thinks that as they operate in China, people will see them as a company from China. “So they hope that by setting up a regional headquarters in Malaysia, Wind Information will be able to be seen as an (international) company that provides services similar to Bloomberg to the Asean or Asia region,” she told Bernama on the sidelines of a oChinese firm eyes international presence, aims to provide financial data services to Asia: Teo Taiwanese companies well positioned to support Malaysia’s Industry 4.0 revolution KUALA LUMPUR: Taiwanese companies, known for their adaptability and utilisation of advanced technologies, are well positioned to support Malaysia’s Industry 4.0 revolution, smart healthcare solutions, and net zero carbon emissions goals, according to Bureau of Foreign Trade and Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) deputy executive director Tiffany IC Chen. “As we faced the rapidness in which the Covid-19 pandemic was shaping the global industrial supply chain, Taiwanese companies were able to quickly adapt to the changing times as they embraced Al, big data, cloud services, and other innovative applications and systems,” Chen said at the launch ceremony of Taiwan Expo 2023 yesterday. She added, “After the outbreak of the pandemic, the whole supply chain in the world has been disrupted so severely, and these affected Taiwan’s enterprises and factories have to find a resilient supply chain and build out a resilient and flexible circulation.” “Malaysia and Southeast Asian countries are the best choice for Taiwanese enterprises to set up manufacturing sites or also set up a branch office to build a flexible supply chain. And also, like many enterprises for international companies in Taiwan, we like to consider relocating our manufacturing sites,” said Chen. Teo was in Shanghai from June 27-30 to attend a three-day Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2023 that began on June 28, where she delivered a keynote address titled Technology Driving Change on June 29. During her four-day visit, the deputy minister said she had visited several Chinese telecommunication companies (telcos) pavilions and had met several Chinese telcos C-suite level officers, including those from Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. Asked about the investments that Wind Information is expected to bring in for Malaysia, Teo said that while the figures were not disclosed, the company’s presence would definitely create high-skilled job opportunities such as data analysis and software engineering for Malaysians. She said the competitive operating cost in Malaysia, along with the multilingual and high-skilled talents available in the country, are among the reasons for Wind Information to choose Malaysia over other neighbouring countries. Teo said that Wind Information is currently applying for Malaysia Digital (MD) status, which is expected to be approved around mid-July this year. The MD initiative was launched on July 4, 2022, whereby eligible companies will be offered a set of incentives, rights and privileges from the government to participate in and undertake any of MD’s activities. Apart from Wind Information, Teo also visited China’s leading data centre service provider Shanghai DC-Science Co Ltd, and GDS Holdings Ltd, a leading developer and operator of high-performance data centres. On Shanghai DC-Science, which has partnered with local company MN Holdings Bhd to develop its first highperformance data centre with an estimated value of over US$600 million (RM2.8 billion) in Malaysia, Teo said the Chinese company is expected to sign a sale and purchase agreement and begin the construction of the data centre this month. Under the memorandum of understanding signed between DC-Science and MN Holdings’ wholly owned unit Mutu Nusantara Sdn Bhd on April 1, 2023 in conjunction with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s maiden visit to China, the two companies will jointly develop a high-performance data centre spanning 8.09ha at Sedenak Tech Park, Johor. Malaysia and Taiwan hit a historical high of US$36.6 billion dollars, up 36.2% from 2021. Taiwan Expo 2023 is expected to enhance economic ties, trade and investment relations between Malaysia and Taiwan and spark greater degrees of cooperation in the future,” said Taipei Economic office in Malaysia representative Phoebe Yeh. “Taiwan based Wistron Corporation was recognised as the single largest foreign investor in Selangor in 2019 and 2021. We hope the Taiwan Expo will continue to serve as an important platform to enhance competitiveness between companies from both shores and deepen the industrial link between Malaysia and Taiwan,” she added. Yeh highlighted that the first four months of trade between Taiwan and Malaysia experienced a decline due to weak global demand, as indicated by Miti statistics. “However, there are still lots of industries with potential possibilities and opportunities to foster trade relations such as the electrical and electronics (E&E), textile, machinery, and chemicals sectors,” she said. This year marks the 7th consecutive year that the Taiwan Expo is being held in Malaysia, with five main themes: Industry 4.0, Smart Medical, Halal, Circular Economy, and Intelligent Lifestyle. Taiwan Expo 2023 is scheduled to run from the Aug 24-26 at the KL Convention Centre. One hundred and sixty Taiwan’s companies have been selected to participate in the exhibition. G Capital seals 21-year RE purchase deals with TNB KUALA LUMPUR: G Capital Bhd (GCAP), a renewable energy solutions provider, announced that its wholly owned subsidiary Northern Star Hydropower Sdn Bhd (NS Hydropower) has secured four Renewable Energy Power Purchase Agreements (Reppa) with Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB). The combined capacity of four high-head small hydropower plants in Pahang, Malaysia (the plants) amounts to an impressive 26 MW. Of this, 12.5MW is in Hulu Dong while the remaining 13.5MW is in Batu Talam. NS Hydropower has been granted Feed-in Approval Holder status by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia for the plants. Each of the Reppa spans a period of 21 years from the commercial operation date (COD), with operations scheduled to commence on Dec 6, 2027. Under the Reppa, TNB will purchase electricity from NS Hydropower at a Feed-in-Tariff rate of RM0.2298 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). GCAP executive director Datuk Yap Yee Ping said, “We are thrilled to solidify our commitment to innovation and investment in renewable energy with this landmark deal. Our high-head hydropower plants in Pahang showcase the immense potential of clean energy in Malaysia. Under the Reppa, TNB will purchase electricity from NS Hydropower at a Feed-inTariff rate of RM0.2298 per kWh. Envisaging a revenue potential of RM688 million over a 21-year period on the back of estimated annual electricity production of 142.72 gigawatt-hours from estimated investment in project costs of RM300 million, we are excited to make a meaningful contribution towards Malaysia’s sustainability goals.” Yap believes the government will double down in the green and sustainable sector as seen in Budget 2023, where Bank Negara Malaysia injecting RM2 billion into sustainable technology start-ups and SMEs, RM3 billion allocation in the Green Technology Financing Scheme until 2025 as well as RM1 billion Sustainable Development Financing Scheme by Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd. She said GCAP is currently procuring relevant approvals from Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd and Securities Commission Malaysia in respect of a renounceable rights issue of Redeemable Convertible Unsecured Loan Stocks (RCULS) announced on April 5 that involves the issuance of up to RM112,883,159 of 1,411,039,484 five-year, 8.0% RCULS at a nominal value of RM0.08 each. Gentari in ‘roaming partnership’ with JomCharge, chargEV KUALA LUMPUR: Clean energy solutions provider Gentari Sdn Bhd via its wholly owned subsidiary Gentari Green Mobility Sdn Bhd has activated its roaming network of electric vehicle (EV) charging points in partnership with EV Connection Sdn Bhd (EVC) and Green EV Charge Sdn Bhd (GEV), a subsidiary of Yinson GreenTech (YGT). The three partners were recently present at Energy Asia 2023 to showcase and introduce the roaming network to delegates. The partnership will enable cross access to charging points on the Gentari, JomCharge and chargEV networks, and cross tracking via the Setel, JomCharge and chargEV mobile applications respectively. This allows EV drivers to access charging stations, activate and pay from any partner platform with ease, offering enhanced convenience and peace of mind. Through the roaming network, EV users have convenient access to a combined total of more than 600 charging points across Malaysia including in East Malaysia, equivalent to approximately 60% of EV charging points in the country. These comprise over 150 Gentari charging points, above 320 chargEV charging points and more than 100 JomCharge charging points. With this roaming collaboration, Gentari Green Mobility Sdn Bhd CEO Shah Yang Razalli said they are able to offer access to an extensive network to empower EV drivers with range confidence, growing the number of accessible charging points at a pace that would have otherwise, become a challenge for individual network owners. RHB Research expects Bank Negara to keep OPR at 3% KUALA LUMPUR: RHB Research expects that Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) will keep the overnight policy interest rate (OPR) unchanged at 3% with neutral guidance at its monetary policy committee meeting on July 6. The bank previously indicated that it anticipated a 25 basis points (bps) OPR hike. In a research note yesterday, RHB Research said the key catalysts for its change were mainly due to limited inflation risks, the central bank’s foreign exchange (FX) intervention measures and BNM’s view on the global economy. “Although we believe core consumer price index (CPI) inflation will remain sticky in the second half of 2023 (2H 2023), the ringgit against the US dollar will hit 4.75 in the nearterm and from a balance of risks perspective could hit around 4.88 in fourth quarter 2023 (4Q 2023), and the nominal effective exchange rate is likely to hit new cyclical lows. “Hence, our reading of the central bank is to hold the OPR steady since its core view is that inflation risks are limited and that the weakness in Malaysia ringgit is mainly due to external factors and not domestic in nature,” it said. RHB Research said that BNM’s FX intervention measures have picked up steam recently to stabilise the ringgit against the US dollar and a signal that an interest rate defence of the currency is not something the central bank is willing to engage in currently. It opined that the FX intervention is a stop-gap measure in emerging markets where the fundamental drivers of the currency are on a weakening path. “Hence, we believe FX reserves could fall to around US$109 billion (RM508 billion) within the next three months from the May 31 level of US$112.7 billion as BNM continues to use the FX intervention policy tool to stabilise the ringgit against the US dollar. “Ultimately, FX intervention is unlikely to have a sustained durable impact on the path of the ringgit against the US dollar,” it said. However, RHB Research said the bank maintained its peak OPR forecast of 3.25% in 2023. – Bernama TM wins big at PC.com Awards PETALING JAYA: TM continued to solidify its position as Malaysia’s most trusted converged telco and technology company, when it was recognised with four main awards at PC.com Awards 2023 held recently, including CEO of the Year award won by its group CEO Datuk Imri Mokhtar making the night a special and memorable one for the company. 13 SUNBIZ theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 4, 2023 Miti to streamline functions of investment promotion agencies SUBANG JAYA: The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) is working on an initiative to streamline the roles and functions of all 31 investment promotion agencies (IPA) in Malaysia. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the National Investment Council acknowledged the external threats to Malaysia’s competitiveness and has entrusted Miti with the responsibility of enhancing the ease of doing business for investors by streamlining and realigning the IPA landscape. He said that, ultimately, Miti’s focus is to provide investors, both foreign and domestic, with a simple and seamless journey facilitated by clear roles and responsibilities of each approving authority. “While we just started this initiative, I would like to invite both existing and new investors to share their experiences and suggestions on how we can eliminate pain points and vastly improve the investor’s journey in Malaysia. “We at Miti are always open to constructive feedback,” he said during the Proton and AAPICO joint venture announcement here yesterday. Looking ahead, he said, with oAim is to provide investors, both foreign and domestic, with a simple and seamless journey: Tengku Zafrul better, streamlined processes and improved investor journey, Miti and its agencies will be better equipped to position Malaysia as a truly proinvestment, pro-trade and proindustry destination. Meanwhile, he said the National Automotive Policy (NAP) led by Miti ensures that the automotive industry will continue to thrive in the coming years based on clear goals and targets for its future direction. The success of the NAP is evident in this sector’s significant development of capacity in various sub-fields of automotive engineering such as mechanical, electrical, electronic, software and safety engineering. This has made Malaysia an attractive base for global automotive manufacturers. “Currently, we have over 30 manufacturers and vehicle assemblers who leverage the country’s ease of doing business and well-established automotive ecosystem to meet the growing domestic and regional demands for their brands. “The presence of these manufacturers has also had a positive spillover impact on the domestic supply chain, represented by the 641 parts and components makers in the country,” he said. Moving forward, Miti remains focused on further developing this sector. NAP2020 serves as the blueprint for positioning Malaysia as a regional automotive hub for energy efficient vehicles (EEV), including electric vehicles (EV), with a strong emphasis on the development of nextgeneration vehicles, mobility as a service and the integration of Industry 4.0 technologies. While the automotive sector contributed RM64.5 billion in 2022, the NAP aims to increase its contribution to RM104.2 billion to gross domestic product by 2030. “Additionally, we are targeting RM12.3 billion worth of CBU (completely built up) vehicles exports by 2030,” Tengku Zafrul said. Therefore, he said, Miti’s expectations are high that Proton will continue to be a key player in helping the nation achieve its NAP targets, particularly in the production of EEV as well as EV, which are equipped with smart technology. “Furthermore, we anticipate Proton and its partners to work closely with Miti in realising the targets of our upcoming New Industrial Master Plan 2030, which aims to transform our manufacturing industry and propel Malaysia towards greater sustainable and inclusive economic growth,” he added. – Bernama RM278m net buying on Bursa by local institutions last week KUALA LUMPUR: LocalLocal institutional investors had net bought RM278.3 million on Bursa Malaysia last week, according to MIDF Research. In a research note yesterday, S&P Global Market Intelligence economist Usamah Bhatti said there were further signs in June that business conditions in the Malaysian manufacturing sector remained subdued, thereby holding back production and demand. “While operations are still being helped by an improved supply chain environment, inflationary pressures are showing signs of increasing, given a third consecutive acceleration in inflation of average cost burdens. “Nonetheless, muted demand conditions are weighing on the confidence of manufacturers, as the overall degree of optimism dipped to a 23-month low amid concerns regarding the timing of demand recovery and how long the current malaise will last,” he said. Bhatti said the latest reading suggests that the weaker trends in official data for manufacturing production and gross domestic product (GDP) were sustained throughout the second quarter of the year. S&P Global said the weaker headline figure was in part due to a sustained slowdown in new order inflows that was the tenth in as many months. The moderation was solid and the strongest recorded since the start of the year as firms noted muted demand and client confidence in domestic and international markets. “As such, export demand for Malaysian manufactured goods fell further and at the steepest rate for four months,” it said. Looking forward, Bhatti said Malaysian manufacturers remained optimistic regarding the year-ahead outlook for output during June, amid hopes that demand would pick up in the second half of the year and provide a boost to sales. However, the overall degree of optimism eased to the softest since July 2021, as businesses noted concerns regarding the timing of the hoped-for recovery. – Bernama S&P Global says Malaysian manufacturers remained optimistic on the year-ahead outlook. – BERNAMAPIC

14 theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 4, 2023 SUNBIZ READ OUR HERE /thesundaily SCAN ME PwC Australia sacks eight partners over tax leak scandal SYDNEY: PwC Australia has fired eight partners as part of an internal investigation into the leak of confidential government tax plans by another former partner, the firm said yesterday. The eight partners, who have left or are in the process of leaving, include former CEO Tom Seymour, who resigned in May after admitting he had received emails containing confidential information about the government’s tax plans. Seymour will exit PwC Australia ahead of a previously announced retirement date, the firm said. Seymour and the other seven partners named by PwC did not immediately respond to requests for comment. PwC Australia said in a statement that its investigation found multiple examples where the “misuse of confidential information” breached professional standards and also identified “a failure of leadership and governance” to address the breaches. “Accountability is critical to improving our culture and based on our investigation to date, it is clear that the conduct of a number of partners fell short of what was expected of them. They are now being held accountable for their misconduct,” acting CEO Kristin Stubbins said in the statement. The sackings mark the latest move by PwC to contain the fallout from a scandal first revealed in January, where a former partner who had been advising the Australian government on new tax laws targeting corporate tax avoidance shared confidential drafts with colleagues which were used to pitch for work. Of the eight that were fired, the firm singled three out for actions that “failed to meet their professional responsibilities”. The other five, including the head of the firm’s financial advisory business, were removed because of failures to prevent the actions or “hold others accountable for their behaviours”. This brings the number of staff named by the firm for involvement in the leak to 12. Four former partners, including the one who originally shared confidential information, had already left the firm. The firm said its investigation was continuing in some areas. – Reuters B R I E F SINDIA’S HDFC SHARES SURGE, NOW ONE OF WORLD’S TOP 10 BANKS MUMBAI: Shares of India’s HDFC Bank hit an all-time high yesterday after it completed its merger with parent Housing Development Finance Corp (HDFC), entering the coveted list of the world’s top 10 banks by market capitalisation. HDFC Bank’s shares jumped 3.3% to a record high of 1,757.50 rupees, while HDFC’s shares rose 3.7% to 2,927.40 rupees, their highest since April 2022, when the US$40 billion merger was first announced. That gives the combined entity a market capitalisation of around US$157 billion, Reuters calculations showed, more than top global lenders such as Morgan Stanley and HSBC Holdings. – Reuters INDONESIA’S JUNE INFLATION EASES TO LOWEST IN 14 MONTHS JAKARTA: Indonesia’s annual inflation rate in June eased to 3.52%, settling into the central bank’s target range for a second straight month, data from the statistics bureau showed yesterday. Headline inflation dropped to its lowest since April 2022 and came in below the 3.64% expected in a Reuters poll and below the 4% seen in May. Transport fares, food prices and rents rose in June, Pudji Ismartini, deputy head of Statistics Indonesia, said in a press conference. The core inflation rate, which strips out government-controlled and volatile food prices, eased to 2.58% in June from 2.66% a month before. The poll had expected 2.64% core inflation. – Reuters Asia’s factory output slumps on sluggish global demand TOKYO: Asia’s factory activity slumped in June, business surveys showed yesterday, as sluggish demand in China and advanced nations clouded the outlook for the region’s exporters. While manufacturing activity expanded marginally in China, it contracted in powerhouses Japan and South Korea as Asia’s fragile economic recovery struggled to maintain momentum. The surveys underscore the toll China’s weaker-than-expected rebound from Covid lockdowns is inflicting on Asia, where manufacturers are also bracing for the fallout from aggressive US and European interest rate increases. “The worst may have passed for Asian factories but activity lacks momentum because of diminishing prospects for a strong recovery in China’s economy,” said Toru Nishihama, chief emerging market economist at Dai-ichi Life Research Institute. “China is dragging its feet in delivering stimulus. The US economy will likely feel the pain from big rate hikes. These factors all make Asian manufacturers gloomy about the outlook.” China’s Caixin/S&P Global manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) eased to 50.5 in June from 50.9 in May, the private survey showed on Monday, staying above the 50-point index mark that separates growth from contraction. The figure, combined with Friday’s official survey that showed oChina’s June Caixin PMI expands marginally, most other Asian countries see activity contract factory activity extending declines, adds to evidence the world’s No. 2 economy lost steam in the second quarter. The impact is being felt in Japan where the final au Jibun Bank PMI fell to 49.8 in June, returning to a contraction after expanding in May for the first time in seven months. New orders from overseas customers decreased in June at the fastest rate in four months reflecting feeble demand from China, the Japan PMI survey showed. South Korea’s PMI fell to 47.8 in June, from 48.4 in May, extending its downturn to a record 12th consecutive month on weak demand in Asia and Europe. Factory activity also contracted in Taiwan, Vietnam and Malaysia, the PMI surveys showed. Companies expect to increase capital expenditure and project inflation to stay above the Bank of Japan’s 2% target five years ahead, the Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) quarterly “tankan” showed yesterday, offering policymakers hope that conditions for phasing out their massive monetary stimulus may be gradually falling into place. The survey results boosted Japan’s Nikkei share average to close at its highest level in 33 years yesterday, led by machinery makers. The Nikkei 225 ended 1.7% higher at 33,753.33, its highest close since March 1990. The broader Topix rose 1.41% to 2,320.81. “The tankan confirmed our view that Japan’s economy is on track for a moderate recovery,” said Atsushi Takeda, chief economist at Itochu Economic Research Institute. “While input prices have declined, output prices continue to rise in a sign companies are being able to pass on costs. That’s a good sign for the BOJ’s inflation outlook and may prod the bank to tweak its yield control policy later this year.” The headline index measuring big manufacturers’ mood stood at plus 5 in June, bouncing back from demand. Beyond Asia, eurozone manufacturing activity contracted faster than initially thought in June as persistent policy tightening by the European Central Bank squeezed finances, according to a survey. Compiled by S&P Global, HCOB’s final manufacturing PMI fell to 43.4 from May’s 44.8, its lowest since the Covid pandemic was cementing its grip on the world. An index measuring output, which feeds into a composite PMI due on Wednesday that is seen as a good gauge of economic health, dropped to an eight-month low of 44.2 from 46.4. In Britain, the pace of decline in the manufacturing sector steepened in June and optimism faded despite weakening price pressures. The S&P Global/CIPS UK Manufacturing PMI fell to 46.5 from 47.1 in May, its lowest reading this year and one of the weakest since the 2008-09 financial crisis, but revised up from an earlier preliminary “flash” reading of 46.2. – Reuters Thai household debt ‘worrying’ but no problem yet: BOT BANGKOK: The ratio of Thailand’s household debt to gross domestic product is currently at a “worrying” 90.6%, the central bank said yesterday, adding it posed no real problem at present. 4 J U L Y 2 0 2 3 T U E S D A Y A soul-stirring evening oJiwa Kacau presents a remarkable showcase of Malaysia’s biggest names THE Jiwa Kacau concert, which took place on June 17 at Malawati Indoor Stadium in Shah Alam, has left an eternal mark on fans and concertgoers, who were treated to electrifying live performances by some of the country’s most prominent bands. The event, presented by MND Sport & Event Sdn Bhd, featured four renowned groups, namely Hujan, Bunkface, Insomniacks, and Masdo, who put on an incredible show. With 7,000 people in attendance, the concert successfully ignited adrenaline and stirred souls. When a press conference was held for the concert on April 2, Harith Daniel, the CEO of MND Sport & Event Sdn Bhd, expressed his optimism about the brand and future success of the Jiwa Kacau Showcase this year. He stated that their “Goal is to create an event that leaves a lasting impact, bringing together passionate fans of each performing group.” Harith added, “We are confident that this event, true to its name, ‘Jiwa Kacau,‘ will be an exhilarating experience.” True to his words, the event lived up to expectations, captivating attendees and sparking a renewed sense of enthusiasm. The concert started at 8PM, with Fazziq Muqris, an influencer and Era FM radio DJ, taking on the role of MC. He hyped up the crowd with games and giveaways. Although scheduled to start at 8PM, the concert was delayed due to a government regulation requiring shows to start after the Isyak prayer. Around 8:50PM, the large screen introduced the indie band Insomniacks with captivating animated visuals. The band’s poprock style enthralled the audience as they performed a string of their songs, including Langgar, Igauan Malam, Reminisensi, Sempurna, and Pulang. The band’s frontman, Iqie, sported a legendary outfit reminiscent of AC/DC guitarist Angus Young, complete with a classic old-school uniform and long white socks. However, he put his own twist on the look by opting out of wearing the iconic hat. Adding to the rockstar persona, Iqie also performed using the Cherry-Red Gibson SG guitar, which is identical to Angus Young’s. Insomniacks concluded their performance with their greatest hit, Pulang. The crowd was already buzzing with energy, eagerly awaiting the appearances of the remaining three bands scheduled for the night. The entire performance went extremely well and felt like a warmup. It was, in my opinion, an excellent opportunity for these talented musicians to share the stage with more seasoned bands with extensive experience in the music industry. It was a time of collaboration and growth, with emerging artists learning from and being inspired by their more experienced peers. Next up on stage was Kugiran Masdo, a band that has made waves in the contemporary music scene by bringing back the nostalgic 60s pop genre and flowery melodies. Their performance was eagerly anticipated, and they did not disappoint. Masdo treated the audience to a set of eight captivating songs, including crowd favourites like Janji Manis, Miss Flower, Teruna Dara, Inilah Jalan Nya, Dinda, Bunga, and Bercanda Di Malam Indah. Their soulful melodies and evocative lyrics transported listeners to a bygone era, creating a nostalgic and enchanting atmosphere. After the captivating performance by Masdo, the stage was set for the highly anticipated act of the night, Bunkface. Exactly at 10:40 PM, guitarist Paan and bassist Youk from the band took the stage, greeted by a wave of excitement from the audience. They were soon joined by Sam, who amplified the energetic vibes and kept the crowd captivated. Bunkface kicked off their show with the anthemic Bunk Anthem, igniting the crowd and setting the stage for an unforgettable experience. The energy continued to surge as they followed up with the pulsating Malam Ini Kita Punya, prompting the audience to sing along at the top of their lungs. Then came Ekstravaganza, Rentak Laguku, Darah Muda, Panik, Situation, and the crowd favourite, Revolusi. During the show, Sam took a special moment to engage with the audience by inviting a fan named Asyraf to join him on stage and lead the crowd in singing the iconic song Rentak Laguku. To everyone’s delight, the lucky fan named Asyraf embraced the opportunity with confidence and delivered an outstanding performance as if he had rehearsed with the band for years. It was truly a magical moment that showcased the power of music and the strong connection between the band and their fans. As the final act of the night, Hujan took the stage without hesitation and launched into their hit song Obsesi. Featuring Noh Salleh as the lead vocalist, the crowd’s anticipation was met with an explosive performance that solidified Hujan’s presence as a powerhouse band. The energy in the venue soared as the band delivered a memorable performance, leaving the audience in awe. Hujan continues with Mencari Konklusi, Dugaannya, Perindu Kalbu, Kotak Hati, Jiwa Kelajuan, Ahmoi Chantek, Lonely Soldier Boy, Empayarmu, and the phenomenal Aku Skandal. Overall, the Jiwa Kacau concert was really soul-stirring and left a lasting impact on both the performers and the audience. It really does showcase Malaysia’s vibrant music scene and celebrate the country’s music and culture. The concert will be remembered as a memorable event that filled almost the entire Melawati Indoor Stadium in Shah Alam. █ BYHAZIQUE ZAIRILL Insomiacks’ performance left a lasting impression on the attendees. – ALL PIX BY ECHOLAILA Bunkface’s dynamic performance kept the crowd engaged and fueled the night with their infectious enthusiasm. MøllerJørgensen did not provide further details regarding the decision, but it is speculated that it may be related to the trademark violation lawsuit Mattel filed against Aqua in 1997. Gerwig, the film’s director, reassured Robbie that they would find a creative way to include it. According to Rolling Stone, Gerwig had always intended to include Barbie Girl in the soundtrack, given its global success in 1997. To give the song a fresh twist, Mark Ronson, the executive producer for the soundtrack, enlisted the talents of Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice for a remix titled Barbie World. Ronson explained that the idea of having Nicki Minaj rhyme over a version of Barbie Girl had been a long-standing desire among fans. Almost tangled with vampires AFTER landing the role of Katniss Everdeen in the first The Hunger Games film back in 2012, Jennifer Lawrence became a global superstar and an easily recognisable household name. As the number of films increased to four by 2015 and the franchise raked in US$2.9 billion (RM13.53 billion) at the worldwide box office, Lawrence’s recognition grew meteorically. Recently, the actress revealed that there would have been a different outcome if she had landed a different role before Katniss. “I auditioned for Twilight,” the Academy Awardwinning actress revealed during a recent interview on The Rewatchables podcast. “They turned me down immediately. I didn’t even get a callback. But my life would’ve been totally different. I got Hunger Games, I think, like, a year later. It was probably after Winter’s Bone”. The Twilight Saga films launched with the first film in 2008 and spanned five films through 2012. Lawrence said she had to “churn out movies in between” her Hunger Games films so that she would not be typecast due to the franchise. She also said it was something she would still have to do if she booked Twilight instead. “When I was trying to talk to people about making this decision after The Hunger Games got offered to me, it was hard to explain to people this level of fame,” Lawrence said. “I assumed it was going to be the Twilight level of fame and that was never something I had in mind. I never wanted to be the most famous person on the planet. That’s a very different life than I pictured for me”. The actress was referring to the media attention paid to Twilight stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner, which differed to her own experience. “I would have been miserable too,” Lawrence commented, if she had starred in the vampire franchise. 19 LIFESTYLE theSun LYFE ON TUESDAY | JULY 4, 2023 SUPERSTAR yoga teacher Sadhguru has more than 10 million followers online, and he sees no limit to how many people will become adherents in the coming years. “I think in 25 years you will have probably 60 to 70 per cent of the world doing some form of yoga,” he told AFP during a visit to Paris this week. “Yoga is a science that was first transmitted by the first yogi 15,000 years ago, but until now no generation has been ready to address their well-being and all aspects of who they are in a scientific manner using these tools,“ he added. Millions discovered 65-year-old Sadhguru, real name Jagadish “Jaggi” Vasudev, during the COVID19 pandemic, when his daily videos on Instagram became a vital resource to get through lockdowns. Punctuated by bursts of laughter, they combine lessons on life, yoga practise, and humorous reflections. Yoga is increasingly recognised worldwide for its health benefits, particularly in combating stress and maintaining physical flexibility. Dressed as usual in a turban and a huge light-coloured shawl, Sadhguru said yoga’s “internal tools” of meditation, postures, breathing, and mantras were “within everyone’s reach”. “More people are intellectually active than ever before in the history of humanity. This generation and the coming generations are really ready for yoga,” he said. “It’s only now that we are able to understand our relationship to the world around us,“ he added. “The age of yoga has come!” Technology for well-being Sadhguru has many celebrity fans, from Will Smith and Matthew McConaughey to Paris Hilton and Andrea Bocelli, who welcome the way he applies ancient teachings to their materialist world. He is also close to nationalist Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has made yoga a central part of his image. But Sadhguru says yoga is not a purely Indian phenomenon. “People are identifying it with India, with Hinduism, but no, it has nothing to do with that,” he said. He says it was kept alive for thousands of years in India because it was a relatively peaceful corner of the world, protected by natural barriers. “We managed to preserve it... but a time has come when the world will go towards it, because this is not a philosophy, an ideology. “This is not a new religion. This is technology for well-being. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re black, white, a man, or a woman. Whatever you are, if you learn to use it, like your camera or your phone, it will work for you.” A keen biker, Sadhguru is also part of several projects around the environment and biodiversity. He has a renowned yoga centre and non-profit foundation, Isha, based in Coimbatore, southern India that has planted some 25 million trees, among other projects. – ETX STUDIO ALTHOUGH beneficial for combating the damaging effects of ultraviolet rays, sun creams and tanning oils are far less beneficial for coral reefs. This is due to the presence of chemical compounds such as oxybenzone, which contribute to the coral bleaching process, and the ultimate decline of reefs. To counter this, scientists in Eilat, on the shores of the Red Sea, have developed a sunscreen formulated to nourish endangered corals. Tourists use between 16,000 and 25,000 metric tonnes of sunscreen each year in tropical regions, potentially releasing between 4,000 and 6,000 metric tonnes of sunscreen into reef areas, according to the findings of a study published in the scientific journal Environmental Health Perspectives. While it’s impossible, and even totally inadvisable, to stop protecting ourselves from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays, many brands are now working to offer sun protection products with cleaner formulas. This includes eliminating the most harmful chemical compounds, such as oxybenzone and octinoxate, but scientists are trying to go even further by proposing products that could actually reverse, as far as possible, the mechanism that contributes to coral bleaching. Indeed, marine biologists and skincare experts have worked hand in hand to develop a sunscreen that protects against the damaging effects of ultraviolet rays while promoting the growth of endangered coral reefs. The initiative came about in sunny Eilat, a seaside town in southern Israel that is home to the Coral Beach underwater reserve, which features around a hundred species of coral and several hundred species of fish. This is an area that the local municipality is working hard to preserve from the ravages of mass tourism and, more particularly, from the dangers inherent in the use of sunscreens not formulated to protect the oceans. A combination of trace minerals Called Reef Relief, this new kind of sun protection is a nanoparticlefree, titanium dioxide-based mineral sunscreen and contains a The age of yoga has come oScientists in Eilat have developed a sunscreen formulated to nourish endangered corals “bespoke blend of FDA-compliant trace minerals used by coral farmers to feed and support healthy growth in coral,” the experts behind the initiative explain in a news release. With a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 to 50, this sunscreen also boasts a new certification: RPF, for ‘Reef Protection Factor.’ The aim is to encourage the establishment of a new industry-wide standard to help consumers make informed choices. Giovanni Giallongo, Marine Biologist at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Eilat, said, “The development of a sunscreen that not only doesn’t harm coral, but has the potential to feed and nourish our reefs is an important step towards protecting and preserving our oceans. Reef Relief could feed into the health of communities underwater and on land.” The scientist adds that RPF certification is “a way of identifying sunscreen that truly cares for coral. An RPF marque as an industry standard: this could be game-changing.” However, vacationers won’t be able to slather on this sunscreen just yet since it is still undergoing tests and trials at this stage. “We thank you for your patience, and hopefully, Reef Relief will be available for purchase soon,” reads the product website. In the meantime, you can opt for a sunscreen that excludes the most problematic chemical compounds in order to protect the health of your skin and that of the sea. – ETX STUDIO Millions discovered 65-year-old Sadhguru during the COVID-19 pandemic, when his daily videos on Instagram became a vital resource to get through lockdowns.– ETX STUDIO Sunscreen for coral growth Scientists have developed a sunscreen that protects the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays while promoting the growth of corals. – ETX STUDIO

20 FASHION & BEAUTY theSun LYFE ON TUESDAY | JULY 4, 2023 DIOR put on an austere sci-fi spectacle at Paris Fashion Week on June 23 that wowed the audience with models rising unexpectedly out of hidden trapdoors. Despite the impressive gimmick, Dior’s creative director Kim Jones told AFP the stark, metallic set design was aimed at putting the focus on the outfits, which is not always the case in the publicity-hungry world of high fashion. “The thing about what I do is that they are always real clothes. I really think about what the customer wants,” Jones told AFP at Dior’s showroom next to the Arc de Triomphe. Dior has increasingly been the yin to the yang of its poppier LVMH stablemate, Louis Vuitton. The contrast was again striking after the debut of Pharrell Williams as Louis Vuitton designer, which turned the historic Pont Neuf into an openair club and was more concert than catwalk. Jones previously ran menswear at Louis Vuitton himself and helped pioneer the blend of luxury and streetwear that has driven huge growth at the brand. But now at Dior, he focuses on the house’s fabled past, and his new collection drew heavily on its famous “cannage” crosshatch pattern along with leopard prints from the days when Yves Saint Laurent was creative director in the late 1950s. “I wanted to go back to what Dior was, the New Look, but seen via the New Wave with a punky edge to it, turning the leopard print from Saint Laurent into something that could be a revolutionary’s vest or something,” said Jones. He says the back catalogue is an endless source of inspiration. “You can look at a couple of couture pieces and pull out enough for a whole season. That’s the magic of it. It was actually very masculine in the fabrics that Dior used. The way the patterns were done was very interesting,“ he said. A bit of shopping The interview was briefly interrupted by the appearance of Hollywood star Demi Moore, a close friend whom he referred to as “my wife”, along with her tiny chihuahua Pilaf in a pouch on her front – designed, naturally, by Jones. Moore famously walked the runway in 2021 for Fendi, where Jones has another job as womenswear and couture director. Jones, 49, said he was also slightly distracted by a redesign at his London home; printouts showed works by Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud on his walls, along with a pile of first editions by Virginia Woolf and her handbag, evidence of his longstanding obsession with the Bloomsbury Group. He was also checking out an Old Masters auction at Christie’s. “Just doing a bit of shopping,” he quipped. – ETX STUDIO Sci-fi Dior show boldly puts focus on ‘real clothes’ Models emerge from the floor for the Dior Menswear Spring-Summer 2024 show at Paris Fashion Week. – ETX STUDIO ‘tenniscore’, tried and tested by a host of particularly influential celebrities on social networks, from Bella Hadid to Beyoncé. And that’s not all, since the Belgian singer Angèle took Coachella by storm in April, wearing a high-end ‘tenniscore’-inspired outfit by Chanel. As for Iris Law, it was at the Cannes Film Festival that one of her street style looks stood out. The English actress and model opted for a pleated skirt in a very fine woven material, matched with a long-sleeved top under which a swimsuit could be seen. More recently, Canadian model Winnie Harlow succumbed to the call of the ‘tenniscore’ look on social media – for the purposes, it should be noted, of a campaign for the Puma brand – while Chiara Ferragni totally revisited the trend by accessorising her miniskirt suit with a simple brassiere, moccasins, and high socks. This particular outfit serves as a reminder that, by the end of the summer, ‘tenniscore’ should give way to ‘school girl’ style, which, in the end, is just another variation on the preppy aesthetic. – ETX STUDIO WITH the French Open now over and Wimbledon around the corner, fashion shows no signs of letting go of the codes of tennis and two of its favourite inspirations of the moment: quiet luxury and sport. It’s a duo that has long since proven its worth, bringing back into fashion vintage pieces that combine elegance and functionality without ever compromising on style. That’s why ‘tenniscore’ is a guaranteed winner this summer. Whether it’s fashion and basketball, fashion and soccer, or fashion and motor racing, it’s no secret that the ready-to-wear and luxury goods industries have long understood the benefits of associating themselves with popular sports to build brand awareness, develop community loyalty, and even expand to new horizons. But if there’s one sport where style is particularly important and has been for decades, it’s tennis, with its mix of preppy style, high-class chic, and technical performance. It’s an inspiration that’s not unlike the ‘quiet luxury’ aesthetic that went viral a few weeks ago thanks to the success of the TV show Succession. At the dawn of summer, the trend seems to be here to stay, but with an athletic twist that gives rise to ‘tenniscore’, a fashion look that’s already gaining millions of followers around the world. Born on the catwalks Although it now has almost a million views on TikTok, the ‘tenniscore’ trend was not born on social networks, but on the catwalks. Under the impetus of Miu Miu, which marked the return of the pleated miniskirt and launched its Miu Miu Tennis Club in the summer of 2022 tennisfashion has slowly but surely grown to become a veritable phenomenon. Not only have most of the major luxury brands and ready-to-wear giants embraced this famous preppy wardrobe – with polo shirts, pleated skirts, sporty chic dresses, caps, and socks – but it’s also become a must-have with the emergence of ‘quiet luxury’, which has racked up over 150 million views on TikTok. So if ‘tenniscore’ stands out today, it’s largely because of its retro-chic vibe, evoking the wardrobes of amateur or professional players from decades gone by. Miu Miu isn’t the only brand to have succumbed to the call of the tennis court. Although not directly inspired by the famous racket sport, the collaboration between Gucci and Adidas also makes reference to this popular retro-chic style. More recently, Lacoste, a brand closely linked to the world of tennis, embraced the trend with a collection of clothing and accessories offered in collaboration with the Sporty & Rich label. This includes all the attire the most elegant tennis player could wish for, to be worn off-court, of course, for added effect. From Winnie Harlow to Iris Law While one or several brands launching a trend isn’t always enough for it to go viral, certain public figures can really help bring a look to the masses. This is exactly what happened with Polo shirts, pleated mini-skirts, socks, sports-inspired dresses and caps are staples of the ‘tenniscore’ trend. – ETX STUDIO The pleated miniskirt has been dominant on fashion runways. – INSTAGRAM Canadian model Winnie Harlow in ‘tenniscore’ – INSTAGRAM How tennis-ware became fashion’s latest playground o‘Tenniscore’ is already attracting millions of followers from around the world

21 * SPORTS theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 4, 2023 BEN STOKES stood unmoved with head bowed, leaning over his bat, devastated. Alex Carey had the ball in his gloves and England’s hopes of another miracle were dashed as Australia took a 2-0 lead in the Ashes. The England captain had produced a herculean effort with bat in hand to try and drag his side over the line – as he has done time and again for his country – scoring 155 runs as they chased 371 to win, but the hosts eventually fell 43 runs short. In the morning session, having resumed on 114-4, Duckett was caught by Carey for 83, but it was the next wicket that lit the fire and produced a reaction not seen before from the usually quiet and amiable Lord’s crowd. Jonny Bairstow was on 10 alongside Stokes as the last recognisable batting partnership, when he was controversially stumped by Carey. The Yorkshireman ducked a bouncer, which went straight through to Carey behind the stumps, paused for a moment then went to speak to his batting partner Stokes, just as the wicketkeeper threw the ball at the stumps and appealed. The decision was made after an umpire review and a furious Bairstow had to make his way back into the pavilion. What followed next was a chorus of boos from all corners of the ground, and chants of “same old Aussies, always cheating” and an animosity that followed Australia into the long room at the lunch interval, with words exchanged between players and members. The Ashes does not usually need any added spice, but Stuart Broad had words to say when he came to the crease after Bairstow’s wicket, and was caught telling Carey, “That’s all you’ll be remembered for, that” in disgust. The loss of Bairstow sparked something in Stokes, who had 62 runs when the wicket fell, then smashed 93 in 88 balls afterwards. It felt for a moment in the afternoon like Stokes would do it again. The field was spread, nine men on the boundary and the England captain was turning down singles and trying to keep the strike. When Stokes was caught, there was stunned silence before he left the field to a standing ovation. Despite a valiant lastwicket stand of 25 from Josh Tongue and the 40-year-old James Anderson, it was Australia who had the last laugh, taking a 2-0 lead in the series with a 43-run victory. It means this England side, who have broken records before, will have to do so again to avoid a first Ashes defeat at home since 2001. – The Independent IN THE HIGH COURT OF MALAYA AT KOTA BHARU IN THE STATE OF KELANTAN DARUL NAIM COMPANIES WINDING-UP NO.: DA-28NCC-18-06/2023 In the matter of Section 465 (1) (e) of the Companies Act 2016, the provisions of the Companies Act 2016 and the Companies (Windingup) Rules 1972 AND In the matter of Farra Secret Beauty Sdn. Dated this 4th day of July, 2023 Yap Ching Kok Azmu Bin Aziz Liquidator Lord’s erupts Stokes heroics, Bairstow controversy define alltime great Ashes day Stokes wouldn’t want England to ‘win like that’ BEN STOKES insisted he would not have wanted to win a Test match in the manner of Jonny Bairstow’s controversial wicket, after Australia took a 2-0 series lead following a narrow victory at Lord’s. As a game, the second Ashes Test had a bit of everything, individual heroics, excitement, a game that went down to the wire, and moments that will be debated and live in the memory far longer than Australia will be in the country. “I think, to take the whole situation into consideration, the first thing that needs to be said is that it is out,” Stokes said. “The things I had to consider out there was the fact it was the last ball of the over and I very shortly questioned the umpires as to whether they had called over, “Both umpires were making the gesture walking towards their opposite position. Jonny was in his crease, then left his crease to come out and have the conversation between overs like every batsman does. “If I was fielding captain at the time, I would have put a lot more pressure on the umpires to ask them what their decision was around the ‘over’. “Then I would have had a real think about the spirit of the game and would I want to potentially win a game with something like that happening. It would be no.” – The Independent FRENCHMAN Victor Lafay sprung a surprise by beating an elite breakaway to the finish line on stage two of the Tour de France yesterday ending a 15-year curse for his team Cofidis. The win is a first at the Tour de France for French outfit Cofidis since 2008, and elevates Lafay to fourth in the overall standings. English rider Adam Yates retained the overall leader’s yellow jersey while Belgian ace Wout van Aert was second on the day ahead of Tadej Pogacar after the relentless rush for the line. Coming into the final stretch after the rolling 209km run through the Basque Country, the longest stage of this year’s Tour, all eyes were on the duel between defending champion Jonas Vingegaard and Pogacar. But Lafay gate-crashed the party with a stealth move that caught everyone out as he maintained just enough pace to cross the line ahead of his pursuers. “I’m so happy to have lifted this curse from the team,” said the winner. “It’s crazy. I was hanging on at times today because that was fast. But I believed all the way and that’s what got me over the line,” said the 27-year-old. Adam Yates leads both UAE teammate Pogacar and the other Yates twin, Simon, by six seconds in the overall standings. Vingegaard is 22 seconds off the pace. Yates complained that nobody had helped his team UAE Emirates all day, but remained excited. “We have the yellow and the white and we have to keep it going that way,” he said. “Pogacar brings the level of the whole team up, he’s definitely great to work with,” Yates exclaimed. The 2021 and 2022 champion Pogacar has a record as a gambler in the saddle but had promised to “hold his horses” this year. “There were bonus seconds to take and I’ll always try and take those,” he said Sunday. “Maybe the bonus seconds won’t count in the long run, but who knows, it could be very close at the end.” – AFP Lafay ends Cofidis Tour curse █ SONIA TWIGG Riders furious after nail attack TOUR DE FRANCE riders were attacked by nails on the road of the final kilometres of stage two in San Sebastian. Several riders suffered punctures in the last throes of the 209km ride through the Spanish Basque Country. Lilian Calmejane posted a video on social media showing his bike after the race, with five nails embedded in the front tyre. “Thank you for this kind of human bulls**t…,” he tweeted. “I don’t think I was the only victim of a puncture in the end… know that you can fall and get really hurt with your bulls**t you morons.” Race radio announced a series of punctures from around 20km to the finish line, with 15-20 riders affected. Race organiser ASO is investigating the incident. MCC suspends three members THE Marylebone Cricket Club has suspended three members over altercations with Australia players at Lord’s on day five of the second Test. Television footage appeared to show clashes between Usman Khawaja and David Warner and spectators in the Long Room as Australia walked off for lunch. The incident came after England’s Jonny Bairstow was controversially stumped by Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey. Australia batter Khawaja called the comments “disrespectful”. The MCC said it had apologised “unreservedly” before confirming it had suspended three members identified from the incident. “They will not be permitted back to Lord’s whilst the investigation takes place,” the MCC said in a statement. “MCC condemns the behaviour witnessed and once again we reiterate our apology to Cricket Australia.” Khawaja said the behaviour of the members was “really disappointing”, while (Australia captain) Pat Cummins added he thought some could lose their memberships as a result. McCullum incensed by Bairstow stumping FURIOUS England coach Brendon McCullum has suggested his players might skip post-Ashes beers with the Australia team and questioned the visitors’ sportsmanship over the Jonny Bairstow stumping on the final day of the second Test at Lord’s. With England eventually losing by 43 runs to trail 2-0 in the five-test series, McCullum made it clear the stumping had strained relations. “I can’t imagine we’ll be having a beer with them any time soon,” McCullum told the BBC. “We have three Tests to land some blows and try to win the Ashes. That is where our focus will be.” McCullum added that “the spirit of the game” was vital. “In the end you’ve got to live with the decisions you make, and that’s life,” he said. “But I feel from our point of view, if we were in the same situation, we might’ve made a different decision.” ‘Same old Aussies, always cheating’ AUSTRALIA were accused of “cheating” in The Ashes after Jonny Bairstow was run out in controversial circumstances. Jonathan Agnew said on Test Match Special: “This will be ugly. The Australians could have withdrawn the appeal but they haven’t,” the former England fast bowler said as boos rang out from the majority of the Lord’s crowd who also chanted “Same old Aussies, always cheating”. Social media was similarly ablaze with reactions to the incident and Piers Morgan was traditionally vocal in his criticism of the Australians’ decision. He tweeted: “You cannot be serious??!! Australia, that is pathetic. How can you possibly want to win an Ashes Test match like that?” BRIEFS Ben Stokes. – REUTERSPIX

22 theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 4, 2023 SPORTS /theSunMedia FOLLOW ON YOUTUBE SCAN ME ‘One race at a time’ MAX VERSTAPPEN said he is refusing to dream about completing a hattrick of world championships after he delivered another emphatic performance to win the Austrian Grand Prix. The double world champion was made to work for his seventh victory from nine rounds after he passed Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz on track in Spielberg. But after manoeuvring himself ahead of both Ferrari drivers, Verstappen raced off into the distance to the delight of his 70,000-strong travelling army from the Netherlands. He leads Sergio Perez in the standings by 81 points – the equivalent of more than three victories – ahead of this weekend’s British Grand Prix. However, when asked about the prospect of taking his third straight title, Verstappen said: “I don’t like to think about that yet. “I am enjoying the moment, driving with this car, and working with this team. I am just very happy for this weekend and we will turn our focus to the next race at Silverstone.” A day after taking the sprint race spoils, Verstappen was celebrating his fifth consecutive victory, and the 42nd of his career to move ahead of Ayrton Senna. Verstappen fended off an aggressive Leclerc on the opening lap before he fell to third after the Ferrari drivers stopped early for tyres under the Virtual Safety Car. It ended Verstappen’s remarkable run of 249 consecutive laps at the head of a race – a streak stretching back to the Miami Grand Prix on May 8 – however, the Dutchman required just 11 laps before he was back in charge. After he left the pits on lap 25, Verstappen moved ahead of Sainz a couple of laps later, and then fought his way past Leclerc on lap 35 of 71. From there, the Dutchman cruised to the flag – even stopping for tyres on the penultimate lap in order to set the fastest lap and take a bonus point. “It was important to stay in front of Charles on lap one and after that we were able to do our own race,” added Verstappen. “We chose not to box under the VSC and we followed our normal strategy and that worked out really well. “I knew I would get them back eventually and following our own plan was the best way forward. To see all the orange in the grandstands and the flares at the end was incredible.” Verstappen has won 16 of the last 20 races in F1, with Red Bull unbeaten this season as they bid to become F1’s first invincible team. “We can only take it one race at a time,” said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. “Can we (go unbeaten)? Yes. Will we? Who knows.” – The Independent Wolff plays down ‘just please drive it’ remark to Hamilton TOTO WOLFF insists his public rebuke of Lewis Hamilton at the Austrian Grand Prix will have no impact on the British driver’s Mercedes future. As Max Verstappen racked up his seventh victory from nine rounds with a crushing performance at Red Bull’s home race in Spielberg to extend his championship lead to 81 points, Hamilton crossed the line a disappointing seventh. The day got worse for Hamilton when he was demoted one place to eighth in the final classification after his original five-second penalty was upgraded to 10 seconds. Hamilton was found guilty of exceeding track limits on more occasions than those originally noted. The Mercedes man was among eight drivers to receive additional penalties announced by the FIA five hours after the chequered flag fell. Hamilton had originally become the first to be punished by Formula One referee Niels Wittich for falling foul of track limits. He then spent the remainder of the race asking why some of his rivals – namely Sergio Perez – had not been sanctioned, and also lambasted the speed of his under-performing Mercedes machine. Wolff rarely speaks to his drivers over the radio, but was on the intercom twice to Hamilton during Sunday’s race. “Lewis, the car is bad, we know,” said Wolff on his second appearance over the airwaves. “Just please drive it.” The dressing down might have stung Hamilton. Asked what provoked Wolff to deliver the remark, Hamilton’s answer was short, and notso-sweet. “I don’t know,” he said. “You will have to ask him.” Hamilton has six months remaining on his £40 million-a-season (RM232m) deal. Might the exchange have a bearing on negotiations? “No, not at all,” said Wolff. “You should hear us talking on the phone and meeting each other. That was nothing. “We have had a bad weekend, all of us in the team, and that just makes us stronger. “It was only for the best interest of the driver and the team. Sometimes there is a certain moment when you need to calm things down but I meant well. “I wanted to make sure we were getting the best out of the package that wasn’t performing, and trying to give it our best shot.” – The Independent CARLOS ALCARAZ is eyeing up a rematch with Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon. The pair met for the first time at a grand slam in the semifinals of the French Open last month in the most anticipated match of the year so far. For two pulsating sets it lived up to its billing before Alcaraz was struck down by cramp, which he later attributed to the tension of the situation. With Alcaraz and Djokovic the top two seeds at the All England Club, a rematch could only come in the final, where the young Spaniard would be eager to show he has learned from what happened in Paris. He is just the latest young player to discover what a hard nut to crack the big three of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are at grand slams and, while the latter two may no longer be a factor, Djokovic appears more of a favourite than ever. “I would say the pressure that they put to everyone,” said Alcaraz when asked to name the hardest thing about facing Djokovic. “Not only to me, to everyone to play at their best for three hours in a grand slam. I have to deal with that, but it’s something that I really want it. I hope to play a final here against him.” The list of players who could potentially stop Djokovic winning a fifth successive title at Wimbledon may begin and end with Alcaraz. The 20-year-old is far less experienced than his rival on grass in particular but showed how exceptionally quickly he learns by lifting the trophy at Queen’s Club last weekend, propelling him back past Djokovic to reclaim the world No. 1 ranking. “I started Queen’s with no expectation to win Queen’s and I won it,” he said. “I feel great playing such a great level. The confidence grew a lot. “I’m coming here to Wimbledon with a lot of confidence, thinking that I’m able to do good results here. But, obviously, for me, the main favourite is Djokovic. “My expectations are high. I think I will be able to put the pressure on the other players, even Djokovic as well. “But all I can say is I feel with a lot of confidence and I feel ready to do good things here.” Alcaraz, who faces retiring Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in the first round today, must first target bettering his run from last year, when he lost in the fourth round to fellow young gun Jannik Sinner. – The Independent Alcaraz eager for another crack at Djokovic █ PHILIP DUNCAN █ ELEANOR CROOKS AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX (TOP 10) 1. During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during the week of Mallorca. As a precaution I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist. 23 SPORTS theSUN ON TUESDAY | JULY 4, 2023 CHELSEA are set to begin negotiations with Porto in the near future over a potential move for goalkeeper Diogo Costa, according to reports in Portugal. The Blues have been heavily active in the market since the end of last season, with several new signings having been made in recent weeks alongside a larger number of player sales. Edouard Mendy is one of those to have left Stamford Bridge this summer, with his exit leading to speculation that Chelsea could be looking to land a new goalkeeper in advance of the new campaign. Costa has been linked with a move to the Premier League for quite some time and has reportedly emerged as a target for the Blues hierarchy, who are planning to kick-start talks with Porto as a matter of priority, according to Jornal de Noticias. It is said that Chelsea have their “coffers full” to invest in the signing of a firstchoice goalkeeper after raising over £134 million (RM777m) in player sales over the last few weeks. They are preparing to open negotiations regarding a move for Costa in the “first days of July”, with Porto only willing to sell for the full value of his £64.4m (RM373m) release clause as things stand. However, it seems as though the wishes of Chelsea’s recruitment team may be at odds with those of Mauricio Pochettino, who officially began his tenure as the club’s new permanent manager on Saturday. The Argentine is willing to give Kepa Arrizabalaga the opportunity to establish himself as Chelsea’s firstchoice stopper, according to the Evening Standard, which suggests that a move for Costa might not be too high up on his list of summer priorities. It is claimed that Pochettino would rather find an established second-choice goalkeeper to push Kepa and feature in domestic cup competitions. Costa, meanwhile, would almost certainly be looking to play in the Premier League on a weekly basis as well as the Champions League if he ends up joining the Blues this summer. A successful move for Costa could emerge as a major coup for Chelsea, though, with the 23- year-old having turned plenty of heads with his impressive showings at Porto in recent years. He managed to keep 20 clean sheets for the Primeira Liga giants in all competitions last season and was recently thought to be interesting Manchester United, although the Red Devils appear to be chasing the signature of Inter Milan stopper Andre Onana at present. United defender Diogo Dalot has already waxed lyrical about Costa’s qualities, insisting back in May that his international teammate has the potential to become a world-class goalkeeper if he maintains his current rate of development. He told Portuguese media: “I grew up with him, he’s my friend, there’s a great relationship between us. “I know perfectly well that he has the capacity to one day be a world reference. I don’t know if he’ll be at Manchester United or another big club in Europe, he shows at FC Porto that he is a differential goalkeeper and has helped the club a lot. “If he continues there, I’ll be extremely happy. If he leaves, I hope he has the greatest success in the world.” – Express Newspapers Free-spending Blues Chelsea start negotiations for RM377m deal for new goalkeeper Leipzig’s Gvardiol eyes Man City move RB LEIPZIG defender Josko Gvardiol wants to join treble-winning Manchester City and has informed the club of his desire to leave, Leipzig sports director Max Eberl said yesterday. Eberl said talks with City, who won their first Champions League title last month, were under way for a possible move of the 21-year-old Croatia international. “Josko and his advisors have submitted the wish to us for a transfer to Manchester City,” Eberl told Leipziger Volkszeitung newspaper. “We are in talks with Manchester. There is nothing more to say about it at this moment.” Gvardiol would be the latest big name to leave the Leipzig club with the back-to-back German Cup winners having already seen Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai move to Liverpool. Defender Konrad Laimer has gone to German champions Bayern Munich while France international Christopher Nkunku has joined Chelsea in the Premier League. “I can understand the disappointment and concern of the fans,” Eberl said. “No club and no coach in this world wants to lose players of this calibre.” “But we have been prepared for this and I can promise that we will have once more a good and exciting team.” Leipzig, who finished third in the Bundesliga and will compete in the Champions League group stage, have brought in attacking midfielder Christoph Baumgartner and talented 20-year-old Slovenian Benjamin Sesko among others. “We have already signed some good lads and will bring in more and exciting players,” Eberl said. – Reuters █ ARCHIE GRIGGS SIDENETTING Hodgson to stay on as Palace boss ROY HODGSON will stay in charge of Crystal Palace for the 2023-24 season, the Premier League club said yesterday. The 75-year-old took over from Frenchman Patrick Vieira in March with Palace hovering three points above the relegation zone, and oversaw a remarkable turnaround in their fortunes, guiding the club to an 11th-placed finish in the League. “I am immensely pleased and proud to be extending my time at Crystal Palace, and I would like to thank the Chairman and Sporting Director for their continued faith in me,” Hodgson said in a statement. “I know what a fantastic squad we have here. It’s a great blend of youth and potential, alongside experienced players with Premier League and international pedigree. We have set ourselves the target of a top-half finish, which we believe is eminently achievable with such a fabulous group of players and the most magnificent supporters who get behind the team, week in, week out.” … as Vieira goes to Strasbourg FRENCH CLUB Racing Strasbourg have appointed Patrick Vieira as their new manager on a three-year contract, the Ligue 1 club said yesterday. Former France international Vieira coached Premier League side Crystal Palace from 2021 to this year. The 47-year-old guided Palace to a 12th-placed finish and an FA Cup semifinal in his first season in charge but was sacked midMarch following a 1-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion that left the south London club three points above the relegation zone. “I am particularly happy to join Racing,” Vieira told the club website. “I know the history and the identity of this club, the fervour it arouses, the importance it has for its region, which is a place of football and passion. Today, a new cycle begins for Racing and it is exciting as a coach to be able to build something while relying on the values that have defined the strength of the club.” Qatar upset Mexico, Ferreira hits hattrick QATAR upset Mexico 1-0 on Sunday to reach the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup while Jesus Ferreira became the first player to score back-to-back hattricks for the United States in the 6-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago. Jamaica also qualified for the last eight from Group A with ease, behind the USA, after beating St. Kitts and Nevis 5-0 in Santa Clara, California. In Group B, Qatar shocked already-qualified Mexico to qualify in second place and denying Honduras, who were eliminated despite beating Haiti 2-1. THE football stars who lost the most transfer value last season have been revealed. A number of high-profile players had campaigns to forget in 2022/23, with their poor performances causing their estimated worth to take a hit over the last 12 months. Others saw their valuations fall considerably due to factors out of their control, such as their age or their contract situation. Those nearing their expiry will have dropped as a result. Many also struggled with injuries and were ruled out for large spells, lessening their transfer appeal. Thanks to data from transfermarkt, we’re able to see who the biggest market value losers have been since July 2022. Here’s a look at the top 12, which has some understandable inclusions as well as some more shocking ones that you wouldn’t necessarily expect to see. 12Patrik Schick (-£21.5m) – Czech Republic international Schick, who was one of the surprise packages of Euro 2020, signed a new five-year contract with Bayer Leverkusen last year after scoring 24 goals in 27 Bundesliga appearance – shooting his value up to £43m. But he missed most of last season through injury and netted just three times in the league, causing that sum to halve. 11Ansu Fati (-£21.5m) – Barcelona prodigy Fati has a £860 million release clause in his contract. But his value has fallen from £51.5m to £30m in the last 12 months after he struggled to regain his pre-injury form, with his minutes limited under Xavi. 10Federico Chiesa (-£21.5m) – Chiesa’s 22/23 campaign didn’t get underway until November due to a cruciate ligament issue and he managed to find the back of the net just four times in all competitions after returning, seeing his £56m valuation plummet to £34.5m. 9Andy Robertson (-£21.5m) – Robertson’s value also fell from £56m to £34.5m after Liverpool’s backline continued to leak goals last season. Now aged 29, he’s not getting any younger too. 8 Heung-min Son (-£21.5m) – Son looked a shadow of his former self under Antonio Conte. Having been estimated to be worth £64.5m in July 2022, he’s fallen to £43m now. 7Mohamed Salah (-£21.5m) – After signing a new contract at Anfield last summer, Salah was valued at £77.5m. That’s dropped to £56m, likely influenced by the fact he turned 31 last month. 6Youri Tielemans (-£26m) – Aston Villa snapped Tielemans up on a free this week after his Leicester deal expired. That’s a steal considering he was valued at a career high £47.5m last year before that fell to £21.5m. 5Romelu Lukaku (-£26m) – Lukaku’s return to Inter Milan on loan was summed up by the block he made from his own teammate in the Champions League final. Chelsea look unlikely to be recouping the £97.5m they spent on him two years ago, with his value now estimated to be £34m compared to £60m last year. 4Jadon Sancho (-£26m) – Another season passed Sancho by at Manchester United off the back of his move to Old Trafford, with Erik ten Hag even sending him away to train alone over the winter. He’s now valued at £38.5m, which the Red Devils will reportedly sell him for if an offer comes in. 3Paul Pogba (-£28.5m) – Few players can say they had a worse 22/23 than Pogba, who didn’t make his second Juventus debut until February before he went on to suffer two more injuries. A £41.5m player in July 2022, he’s now said to be worth just £13m. 2Wilfred Ndidi (-£30m) – Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi has moved to within a year of his contract expiry following Leicester’s relegation to the Championship, causing his £51.5m valuation to decrease drastically to £21.5m. 1Sadio Mane (-£38.5m) – Punching teammate Leroy Sane and scoring just seven Bundesliga goals – it’s fair to say Mane’s move to Bayern Munich has been disastrous. It’s shaved a massive £38.5m off his £60m valuation from last summer. He’s now priced at just £21.5m. £1 = RM5.80 Express Newspapers Biggest market value losers Sadio Mane

It is understood that the highlyrated, 22-year-old Hungary international has signed a five-year contract with the Reds. Szoboszlai is the second of Liverpool’s summer signings to reinforce their midfield, following the £35m (RM203m) arrival of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton, with Jurgen Klopp viewing the former Red Bull Salzburg star as a similar multi-functional player who offers tactical flexibility. With Liverpool having spoken to the player’s representatives earlier this week, the move advanced quickly with a release clause expiring on Friday, which the Reds triggered at the last minute. Szoboszlai was seen as a more viable alternative to Chelsea’s Mason Mount, whom they were interested in as he entered the final 12 months of his contract but had proved to be a more expensive option which involved less straightforward negotiations. “It’s really, really good. I enjoyed the last (few) days and I’m looking forward to knowing everybody better,” Szoboszlai told Liverpoolfc.com. “The last three or four days went really long; it was not that easy. But at the end I’m here, I’m happy and I can’t wait to get started. “(A) really historic club, really good players, good coach, everything is good. For me it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good.” Szoboszlai has taken the No. 8 shirt previously worn with such distinction by Steven Gerrard as the former captain is one of his inspirations. “Of course it’s a great number, a lot of great players had this number and also I have a tattoo from Steven Gerrard, what he said (the quote is ‘Talent is a divine blessing, but without incredible will and humility, it is worth nothing’) so it was also a reason why,” he told the club’s website. “When I was a child, to be honest I didn’t watch that much football but of course when it was Champions League or a big game, I was watching Liverpool, the big teams and also the big players – and he was one of the biggest.” The deal was done so quickly because of the player’s keenness to move to Anfield and link up with Klopp, of whom he has been a long-time admirer. “I was really happy (on hearing of Liverpool’s interest) but I stayed calm because I didn’t want to be too happy (too) early. “As I said, I think in 2020, (Klopp is) one of the best coaches in the world. How he acts next to the pitch, it is like he plays with the guys. I like that really a lot.” The respect is mutual as Klopp believes Szoboszlai can play a big part in the club’s future. “We already have a little knowledge of Dominik as an opponent because we had a couple of really tough games against Red Bull Salzburg when he was a player there. “I think everyone who saw those fixtures will have realised that even at that stage he was a really interesting prospect,” said the Reds boss. “I’m pretty sure he was still a teenager at that time and since then he has made some big strides: moving to Leipzig, doing really, really well in the Bundesliga, playing for the Hungary national team and then becoming captain of his national team at an incredibly young age. “These are proper positives and this is even before we even think about his qualities as a footballer. “I will not say too much about them at this stage except they are definitely the kind which will hopefully bring a lot of enjoyment and also help us to get results.” – The Independent or download app from the App Store or Google Play TM . The Qatari billionaire is in pole position to acquire the club. With the Glazers yet to provide clarity on the situation, however, it’ll be interesting to see what happens. According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Sheikh Jassim feels Sir Jim Ratcliffe isn’t a frontrunner in the race. Instead, the Qatari billionaire now feels as though it’s only the Glazers who represent an obstacle as he looks to seal a takeover this summer. “Still, we have the same situation where (Sheikh Jassim’s) Nine Two Foundation and INEOS are in the process,” Jacobs told GiveMeSport. “Maybe the only difference at this point is that there’s a real feeling on the Qatar side, that it will now be a case of them being successful, or a no sale, possibly with some kind of financing baked in. “So, instead of Qatar looking this as them versus Ratcliffe, which has been the narrative for much of the takeover, I think Nine Two Foundation feel like it’s about whether they’re picked or whether the Glazers opt for a no sale with some form of financing, then put the club on the market at a later date.” Ratcliffe had been seen as being in pole position just a few weeks ago but things have changed ever since Sheikh Jassim launched a fifth and final bid for the club. Not much is known about the mysterious figure, who prefers to keep a low profile instead of taking the spotlight. Yet confidence is growing in the Qatari camp that, sooner or later, they’ll be the next owners of United. They’ve promised to provide significant investment should a takeover go through, with Sheikh Jassim believing the Glazers have underinvested in the club. Old Trafford and the club’s Carrington training complex would both be revamped under Qatari leadership and Sheikh Jassim is willing to give Erik ten Hag transfer backing, too. United are on the cusp of signing Mason Mount from Chelsea, having agreed a fee for the England international last week. Yet Ten Hag knows more reinforcements are required if the club are to win their first Premier League title since 2013. Meanwhile, football finance analyst Viva Mukherjee has expressed a belief Sheikh Jassim will take United off the stock market in the event of any successful bid. “I think the investment plan of Sheikh Jassim is very similar to that of the Friedkin Group at Roma but on a larger scale,” he said. “The group bought a 86.6% majority equity of AS Roma for £510 million (RM3b) in 2020, of which £331 million (RM1.9b) of that was debt amassed by the former owner. “In a similar sense, the Qatar bid includes paying off the gross debt of £725 million (RM4.2b) at Old Trafford. “The Friedkin Group needed 95% equity to delist the Italian club from the stock exchange – a stake that Jassim would own at Old Trafford if he successfully won the takeover. “I believe Jassim will want to do similar and delist United from the stock exchange should he become the new owner. “His bid for the club is around £4.95 billion (RM28b), with a large majority of that fee set to be paid to the Glazers and the club’s shareholders.” “It is the opposite to the Ratcliffe bid, where the debt of the club will likely remain and the club could continue to be traded on the stock exchange.” The Glazers have owned United since 2005, with the club winning five Premier League titles since then – but none since 2013. – Express Newspapers Reds midfield rebuild Liverpool make Szoboszlai second summer signing after Mac Allister █ CARL MARKHAM Szoboszlai (left) and Mac Allister. 7 Lord’s erupts -p21 7 ‘One race at a time’ -p22 7 Free - spending Blues -p23 Sheikh Jassim still hoping to buy Devils despite Glazers’ games Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani
