Title : School dropout in Malaysia during pandemic Covid-19.
General Purpose : To inform.
Central Idea : Recognizing the effects and causes of school dropout will lead us to a
better outcome.
Introduction
I. Individuals who leave school prior to high school graduation can be defined as
school dropouts.
II. Educational achievement is a vital indicator of any country's growth including
Malaysia.
III. According to the Malaysian Minister of Education Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin
(2021), a total of 21,316 students dropped out of school during the Covid-19
pandemic from March 2020 to July 2021.
IV. In 2020, the percentage stands at 0.10% for primary school and secondary
school at 1.13%, a major improvement when compared to 2016 which the
percentage stands at 0.36% for primary school and secondary school at 1.50%.
V. 0.22% stated did not come along with a proper breakdown of students involved.
VI. Therefore, it is important to also consider the reasoning behind the numbers.
(Transition: Let’s dive in deeper and address the possible reasons why students would drop
out of school.)
Body
I. The main reason that may lead to the numbers of school dropouts during the
pandemic
A. 37% of Malaysian students did not have the necessary digital devices to
attend their classes during the pandemic.
1. Many had to take turns with their siblings and families to
study, do their homework and participate in assessments.
a. The students found that it is difficult for them to give a
full commitment and focus on their study which would
lead to being left behind in their education because of a
lack of access to online learning.
B. Internet connection problem also may be the reason for school dropout
1. The connection may be sparse or even lag at the times as
students compete with the rest of their siblings for its reach.
2. Mobile data is not necessarily affordable for many students out
there.
a. Despite the government’s subsidised telco packages
through Program Jaringan Prihatin, there is also the
issue of Internet penetration to many areas in Malaysia.
C. Prolonged remote learning which has only caused children to lose interest in
school.
1. The students may feel comfortable staying at home for a long
period of time.
a. They become lazy and lose interest to return to school
and focus on their studies especially when they do not
have a big exam anymore such as UPSR and PT3
exams.
(Transition: Now that you know the causes of school dropouts, let us look at the effects of
school dropouts issues to the youth.)
II. The youth leaving the school without completion have brought negative bearing
on their economic lives.
A. This situation has put many young people behind the access to good and
well-paid jobs (Create, 2007).
1. This becomes a serious case, where young people or
students who are devoid of intellectual skills because of
dropping out of school become unfit to take any challenging
position in their societies which demand an educated
personality.
B. The unemployment rate for dropouts is very high as compared to the
unemployment rate of high school graduates.
1. Even when the dropouts are employed, they earn less
salary which eventually affects dropout youths who earn
low income.
2. They are therefore not able to meet their daily needs making
their economic life unbearable and unaffordable.
Conclusion
I. In the nutshell, dropout trends among primary and secondary school students in Malaysia
showed that dropout cases were highest in 2016.
II. Various forms of support can be introduced by the government to help students such as
scholarships for students from low income families.
III. Extra observation should be done to identify the causes and effects of school dropouts in
advance so that preventive measures can be taken as soon as possible.
