OUT THE FOOD until after the Blessing is said.

2. Always enter the Dining Hall quietly, and stand with Cabins at assigned table until after the

Blessing.

3. CONTROL TABLE. Counselors should sit at the ends of the table. Singing and clapping is

great but keep it under control. No whistling, banging on tables, standing on tables, throwing

food, or running. We need to get in and eat and quickly get out so the girls can eat on time.

Our time is short so please don’t waste it messing around.

4. When O.D. gets up, quickly get your kids quiet. If up moving around, quickly find a seat.

5. GREEDINESS: Don’t you be and don’t let your Campers be. This is a great place to start

“I’m Third” thinking.

5

team gets close is when they work together for a common goal. This is a great time to build up

your cabin.

6

2019 7/11 Counselor Specific – Section 2
YOUR CABIN SHOULD BE PICKED UP AT ALL TIMES. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CAMPERS ARE

KEEPING TRACK OF THEIR BELONGINGS. PLACE WET CLOTHES ON THE CLOTHESLINE.

5. Nothing except shoes should be left on the porches. Put dry dirty clothes in dirty clothes

7. HONOR CABIN PROCEDURE:

a. FLOORS – In order to receive a full 10 points on this the floor must be mopped and

swept.

b. TRASH – This is easy – the trash can must be empty (completely) and washed out.

Send two campers at a time down to the dumpster by the Mill Lodge.

c. LUGGAGE – Luggage must be under bunks or in cubbies.

d. BUNKS – All bunks should be made nicely. If the campers blanket is a sleeping bag,

it should be unzipped and tucked in like a blanket.

e. SHELVES – (This is the hardest to do well) shelves should all be coordinated. (i.e., 2

shirts, 2 shorts, 2 socks, 2 pr. underwear) Nothing should be hanging over the edges of

the shelves. The shelves are for clothes only.

f. LIGHTS – Easy, easy, easy. Lights must be off, as well as the fan, to receive 10

points. It’s all or nothing.

g. PORCH & GROUNDS – Shoes (w/laces tucked in) should be lined against the wall.

The porch and steps should be swept. No trash should be in front, sides or in the back

of the cabin.

line, all shorts on the next and the shirts on the other)

the kids arrive. Time is short. Be sure and report any problems or lack of equipment to the

Athletic Director.

3. Don’t holler from a perch at a distance when giving instructions. Get as close to the campers

as the activity will allow. Be Hands On!

7

2019 7/11 Counselor Specific – Section 2

4. Pray with campers. Make it fun. Let each camper hear their name, plus a positive word of

encouragement, 5 times during an activity.

5. Be Enthusiastic about your activity. Make the campers think that your activity is the very best

one in the athletic world.

6. Before you leave an activity, make sure that the activity is picked up and orderly for the next

in their bunks quietly. This is a great time to go around and get some 1 on 1 Time with your

kids.

2. One Counselor can go play Basketball or workout if the other Counselor stays in the cabin.

Rotate this privilege every day – Share the Duty.

3. Everyone should stay in the cabin.

4. Attempt to keep your cabin quiet – It’s rude and unfair if other cabins are “Resting” and your

cabin is out of control.

5. Give out mail once everyone is in the cabins on bunks. Don’t hold mail for entire rest period.

6. The 2nd half of Rest Period is a great time to allow the kids to play in the cabin. It’s a great

time for Cabin Unity.

other counselor in the shower area. “Get in, Get Wet, Get Out.”

2. Consistently check your campers for cleanliness and potential skin infections. If you see any

questionable spots, send the camper to the Nurse immediately.

3. Be on Your Toes – This can be a difficult place for some kids. Watch out for name-calling or

“Get to Know” Counselors of the opposite sex. Use this time to have fun with your campers.

Spend time with the kids who feel “Left Out”.

6. At parties, attempt to get all the campers involved. They will follow your excitement and

enthusiasm. Demonstrate to them that Christians Have Fun! Guy and Girl Counselors won’t be

dancing together, but feel free to grab the hand of a little guy or girl camper and help make

their night.

example they see all day long – “Preach the Gospel at all times, use words only when

necessary.”

3. DENOMINATIONAL DOGMA:

a. We will never criticize or question with judgmental overtones any camper or their

denomination (Catholic, Protestant, Christian Science, Jehovah’s Witness, Etc.) Don’t

cut down other religious faiths.

b. We will only lift up Christ as described in I Cor. 1 and throughout the New Testament.

Speak truth, but both boldly and gently.

c. On numerous other occasions, concerned parents have come to Camp with concern

over a Counselor’s use of the “End of the World” fear tactics and pressure to “Get a Kid

Saved”. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a heart conviction.

d. At Camp we emphasize “Receiving Christ as your personal Lord and Savior”. We

don’t get into differences in denominations. We simply lift up Christ and His example.

4. PERSONAL TESTIMONIES: (see below)

a. Testimonies will be shared on Monday and Wednesday.

b. Be very careful when sharing your experiences.

c. Don’t relive any satanic or cult experiences.

pleasure has extremely negative consequences.

f. Be Creative – USE VISUAL AIDS TO HELP COMMUNICATE

g. Stay On Their Level

h. PRAY FOR YOUR KIDS.

1. Use this time to go around and ask, each kid, about his or her day. Tuck each

of them in. Ask them if there is anything they would like you to pray with them

about. Then PRAY with them

W. ALL IN BED – 11:30 PM

1. All staff must be in bed by 11:30, you’ll be exhausted if you don’t get your rest.

10

2019 7/11 Counselor Specific – Section 2

HOW TO SHARE YOUR TESTIMONY

Your testimony - How did you come to know Christ as Savior?

What was your life like before you accepted him?

Who or what brought you to the point that you realized you needed a Savior?

What has your life been like since you started following Him?

The Romans Road to Salvation

We are all sinners by nature and by choice.
Romans 3:23 “For we have all sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”

We receive eternal life as a free gift!
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through
Jesus Christ our Lord.”

God demonstrated His love for us, His enemies.
Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet
sinners, Christ died for us.”

We must trust and surrender to Jesus as Lord.
Romans 10:9-10 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt
believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession
is made unto salvation.”

Our assurance of salvation through Jesus.
Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

SUGGESTIONS TO STAFF FOR LEADING ACT2I0V19I7T/1I1ECSounselor Specific – Section 2
1 John 3:18 “Let us stop just saying we love people;
let us really love them and show it by our actions.”

Well, here you are a Camp counselor at a Camp with about 30 different activities from Carpetball to Corn
Hole, to Basketball, Tumbling, and everything in between. How will you ever learn all the 7/11 ways to teach
and officiate these activities? Here are some pointers that will help!
1. Always be ACTIVELY participating. Be right where the action is, ready to help and be the official.
2. Get to the activities A.S.A.P. – don’t dilly-dally. Kids are waiting and class time is valuable. You
can’t regain it. Have Scorecard and pencil when necessary.
3. Make sure EVERY camper participates for an equal amount of time.
4. Plan your program of games before class starts. Know thoroughly what you are going to teach
before attempting to teach it. Head of activity assigns each counselor to a position then rotates
positions (if counselors feel adequate in those roles!)
5. Place yourself in a position where you may be seen and heard by everyone. Never in the center of
the group or circle. Have group with back to sun.
6. Give your directions simply and distinctly, one point at a time. Ask questions before starting game. It
is a wise thing to have at least one demonstration before boys start playing.
7. Note the signs of fatigue or embarrassment and tactfully replace the camper. All campers should
play the same amount of time.
8. Plan your games so that the change from one activity to another is free from confusion.
9. Stop the games at the point of HIGHEST INTEREST; thus, the eagerness to play again is present.
10. Do not tolerate cheating or bullying. Talk to each camper individually.
11. Teach courtesy, cheerfulness and good sportsmanship. Also, let them help put away equipment –
it’s more fun if everyone helps.
12. Do not permit certain campers to monopolize the game.
13. Play with the children occasionally – this allows for safety too!
14. Once the rules are established for a given condition they should be observed. BE CONSISTENT!!
15. When officiating, make quick, accurate and loud decisions. Do not expect to be challenged over
any judgment. If officials disagree, call an official time out and quietly discuss the matter and then
give a decision.
16. Have all necessary equipment ready before starting to teach. Check the equipment before use.
17. Whenever possible arrange competing teams so that they are equal in strength and skill.
18. Remember that children want action. Spend as little time as possible in getting ready for the game.
Sometimes it is good to instruct some – play some – then instruct some more.
19. Teach SAFETY!!
20. The two most important human traits a teacher can have are sympathy and understanding.
Encourage an awkward child, etc. Remember that EFFORT and COOPERATION are of prime
importance.
21. End in Prayer.

12

2019 7/11 Counselor Specific – Section 2

MAIL

A. Bring all outgoing mail to the box just inside the office.
B. Only counselors will be able to pick-up mail and this will only take place as they leave lunch on the
way to rest period. Not on the way into Lunch!
C. Put return address on all letters, including Cabin #.

Lexington, KY 40509
TO: Mom & Dad
0000 Main Street

D. Make sure you have a stamp on it. Campers must provide their own stamps.

LOST AND FOUND

The last thing you should do as you leave an activity is pick up all the Lost and Found. Take it to the Lost and
Found box located outside the office. Each item that the Camper brings will be marked by his counselors the
first day of the term. Each morning, the Lost and Found will be given out. Any unclaimed
articles will be given to charity.

13

MISCELLANEOUS ACTIVITIES 2019 7/11 Counselor Specific – Section 2

COMPETITION

This is probably the most important period of the day to the kids. It can be worth up to 60 Big Points. The
Cherokees and the Shawnee and the Keetowah and Kispoko are on the Warpath! We’ll utilize the 1st part of
the period for individual coaching and practice. This is super beneficial for the campers. One idea is to break
them up into their teams and do a few pre-game drills; at this age team sports are the most important to them.
They will be eager to be coached by the best in the sport . . . You! The 2nd part of the period, you’ll be officiat-
ing the competition. Make your calls with enthusiasm and authority. Make sure you keep score and judge for
spirit (Sportsmanship, Team Spirit, and Winning). Have fun with it, but remember how important it is to the
kids. Make sure you turn in a completed competition card to the Office after Competition ends. Also, help the
kids remember the tribe stuff is a blast, but does not need to be divisive in the cabin. Teach them that compe-
tition stays on the field.

TIME-OFF (not applicable to 1 week counselors)

Counselors are free to go at 6:00 PM as the kids are entering the Dining Hall and must be back with their

cabin before dinner for a 24. Don’t forget to Sign In & Out and don’t leave unless your Co is with the kids.

SKIT-BOX

1. It is a privilege to have skit attire. Always hang stuff up and leave the room better than you found it.
2. Do not hoard or steal from the skit box; return what you use.
3. Feel free to donate your skit clothes to the skit box
4. If the skit box is not taken care of, there won’t be a skit box
5. Please return (and Hang) everything you borrow the night that you use it.
6. The O.D. must pick up the skit box before their night watch is complete.

DURING STAFF TRAINING WEEK, PLEASE LEARN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ABOUT THE ACTIVITIES.
IT WILL BE TO YOUR BENEFIT.

14

COUNSELOR’S LETTERS TO CAMPERS 2019 7/11 Counselor Specific – Section 2

Each week all counselors will write a letter to every camper in their cabin that will be sent out later in the year.

You will be given two sets of address labels with the camper’s info on them, one set for each counselor, and

envelopes and stamps. You will need to write your own return address though so that any mail comes back

to you from your campers once they receive their letter!

SUGGESTED LETTER OUTLINE:

1. Greet the camper

2. Ask them questions: How are you doing? How is school going? or ask about any big events

that they may have told you about that were upcoming.

3. Tell them what you have been up to: what you have been up to, where you are at school,

your grade, any extracurricular activities, etc.

4. Talk about something specific from camp, something they really enjoyed like a party or

chapel night, or talk about a positive character quality you see in them.

5. Close in encouragement: remind them of what they learned on man day or woman day or

just give them special encouragement from you.

6. Salutation: Something along the lines of “I can’t wait to hear back from you!” and your name

is perfect.

THESE ARE JUST IDEAS - NOT A SET FORM. You do your letter as you see fit.

Writing a meaningful letter on each camper in your cabin is quite a job, but will be greatly appreciated by the
parents and will help you to know the campers much better. You’ll need to be thinking ahead and finding

information daily-maybe write it down so you won’t forget. Maybe have a fun share time daily to write it down.

“But if we are living in the light of God’s presence, just as Christ does,
then we have fellowship and joy with each other.” 1 John 1:7a

GRAMMAR:

1. Always use a pen, and keep the same pen in hand for corrections.
2. No scratch outs or scribble outs; just use a single line through any mistake you might make.
3. Use grammatically correct, well-constructed sentences. Use correct punctuation.
4. “University is capitalized when used as the name of school; i.e.: University of Kentucky.
5. Only 1/3 of the page should be written about counselors.
6. Don’t write huge. Write neatly.
7. Write at least 1-1/2 pages to each family. If there are brothers in the same cabin, the counselors
may write individual letters or one combined (longer than 1-1/2 pages!)
8. Use straight lines as a guide under your letters to make them neat.

SPECIAL NOTES:

Procedures :

1. Use a BLUE or BLACK ballpoint pen.

Body of the Letter :

1. Avoid all negatives: i.e., homesickness, illnesses, injury, weather, and weaknesses . . .

LOOKS LIKE RAIN 2019 7/11 Counselor Specific – Section 2

Campers always wear raincoats or ponchos when it’s raining. Have them put coats on bunks if it looks like

rain in case you have to run back and get it for them or have them hanging up. If it looks like rain before

leaving your cabin, make sure dry things are off clotheslines. 4a, 4b, 5a, and 5b should move luggage to the

tops of the shelves if it looks like there will be a lot of rain, because these cabins have flooding potential.

These are days that can be the most fun of all with bright, cheery and excited counselors to make it so
special.

RAINY DAYS IN CAMP: Morale high - it’s still a great day! We’ll have a rainy day activity schedule.

RAINY DAYS OUT OF CAMP: If it starts raining and storming please bring your campers into safety if in a wa-
ter activity. If it is lightening, safety is our first priority.

REMEMBER: EACH COUNSELOR SETS THE PACE AND ATTITUDE OF THE DAY!! (I can alter my life by
altering my attitude of mind.)

SHOES /SANDALS POLICY

Staff and Campers are required to wear shoes.
Exceptions :
1. Showers: Flip flops or sandals may be worn to and from the bathrooms.
2. Water activities: Sandals with backs may be worn during and in transit to and from water activities.
3. Free Swim: Flip flops or sandals may be worn to and from free swim.
4. Crocs, with socks, and backstrap up can be worn to dinner and evening activity if not an active night (i.e.,
Up the Hill, Movie Night, etc.).

17

FIRE 2019 7/11 Counselor Specific – Section 2

1. In case of fire, building should be evacuated as quickly and orderly as possible.

2. Move campers as far away as possible for safety.

3. Camp Directors should do everything to keep everyone calm and Camp running as smoothly as

possible!

4. It is the Camp Director’s responsibility to get emergency phone calls made and to direct a

fire-fighting effort with the staff.

5. The campers should not be involved in a fire-fighting effort.

TORNADO

Camp Directors will orientate staff of Tornado procedures during Staff Training each summer.

During this orientation or an actual tornado, the key is to keep everyone calm and orderly. This will enable us
to implement our emergency procedure with very little difficulty. When giving instructions, speak clearly and
with firmness. The seconds you save are extremely valuable.

School regulations say: Move people up against concrete/stable wall (go to closest wall towards the storm),
face wall and kneel down, bend with head down on legs, put arms up over head/neck using hands and arms
as protection. Use mattresses or tables to cover campers and staff from falling or flying debris.

18

SICK CALL 2019 7/11 Counselor Specific – Section 2

Medicine and sick calls are:

Before breakfast

Before lunch

After soapies-before dinner

Before bedtime

Any other time-EMERGENCY ONLY!

Please talk to one of the nurses for ALL injuries and sickness (rashes, stomachaches, cuts, etc.) DO

NOT come in and treat yourself or any of your campers.

If a counselor has to ice or soak a foot, etc., let the nurse know at dinner so they will be ready for you

after you put your kids to bed. (Be back to cabin by 10:30 p.m.).

Don’t come in after your night-off for medicines after 11 p.m.

ALWAYS COME WITH YOUR CAMPER TO THE NURSE”S STATION-DON’T SEND A CAMPER TO
THE NURSE ALONE UNLESS IT IS FOR ROUTINE MEDICINES.

Please be responsible about your own health. It’s tough to “love your kids” from the hospital.

BE GOOD STEWARDS OF GOD’S TEMPLE and remember the nurses are happy to help!

MEDS WILL BE DISPENSED ON THE WAY INTO MEALS. BE RESPONSIBLE!

GRAFFITI

NO WRITING ON CAMP PROPERTY ANYWHERE!

Please report any graffiti to leadership immediately. Counselors please enforce this.

3. THE FIRST NIGHT.

A. If any of your campers take Meds, help them find the nurses.
B. Hang out as a cabin as much as possible. Eat together, play together, and goof off together. As you
begin to get to know each other, don’t try to get too deep too quickly. However, don’t leave them on
their own. Be together as much as possible, but in a non-threatening way.
C. Help them begin to understand how Camp works and the Rules we play by. This will take the 1st
few days.

4. FILL THE CUP GENTLY

FIRST NIGHT OF CAMP

It is really important the first two or three nights of the term not to cram the gospel down kids’

throats or spend too much time talking about yourself, but open them up with some questions

and let them talk.

The greatest quality a counselor can have is the ability to ask the right questions and the self-
control to listen actively to what is said.

You will reap the harvest the whole term if you will let the kids know you are interested in them.
Jesus was the best at this. A good example is when He met the woman a the well and instead
of cramming His values down her throat, He simply asked, “Where is your husband?” Another
time He encountered the guys on the road to Emmaus after His resurrection and He simply
asked, “Where are you going?” Both questions opened up a tremendous avenue to share.

Here are some questions you could ask the first night of Camp or anytime you have the opportunity:

1. Where do you go to school?

2. Why did you come to Camp?

3. What else have you done this summer?

4. What clinic are you going to signed-up for?

5. What was the most exciting thing that happened to you this year?

6. Tell me about your family?

7. Who is your best friend?

8. What is he/she like?

9. Who is your hero?

10. What do you like to do in your free time?

Tell me about your relationship with your Daddy? Mother? It might be well to break the cabin up in two
groups and let each counselor have a group. It might also be well to let these questions go over to the
next day at rest period or even for two or three days. I promise you it will help.

5. MISCELLANEOUS

A. Make sure campers get bedtime Meds if needed.
B. Tuck your kids in. It’s a good habit to get into. Go Bunk-to-Bunk checking on them and letting them
know how great Camp is going to be. Pray ith each child at their bunks as you tuck them in.
C. Watch-out for Homesickness. It will happen, so keep an eye out for it. Try to console the camper
and if it continues for more than 2 days, notify a Director.
D. Pray with your Co-counselor!
