EE21 WIRELESS POWER TRANSMISSION THROUGH TESLA COIL

S.K.Jaisree,C.U.Pooja
Ramco Institute of Technology, Rajapalayam

Email:[email protected]

Wireless power transfer is the transmission of electrical energy from a power source to an
electrical load without any conductive physical connection. Wireless electricity ensure that
the cell phones, laptops, iPods, and other power electrical devices get changed on their own,
with no need of plugging them that can prevent the sockets with all sorts of wires. Wireless
power transfer is when the magnetic field is transferred over short distance. The magnetic
field is created using inductive coupling between coils of wire or electric fields using
capacitive coupling between electrodes. The most common form of wireless power
transmission is carried out using direct induction followed by resonant magnetic induction.
The carrying fluxes that induce in the inductor can be captured by another inductive coil that
can produce an induced flux between the receiver coils that coupled to the primary coil. Since
this technique using magnetic field to transfer the electrical energy, the flux that produces in
the primary coil must be in high density with high frequency. Thus, the tesla coil is used as a
transmitter to produces high voltage, high frequency and low alternating current in order to
produce high density flux. In this work, a tesla coil is a main part of transmitter component in
wireless electricity apparatus and need to develop with a view to demonstrate how magnetic
induction is coupled to perform a wireless power transfer. In addition, the construction of
winding coils of the tesla coil would be the great effects in order to provide electricity to
supply a load without wires in distances. The advantages of the wireless electricity system
would be completely eliminating existing wires for electrical appliances between power
sources. With wireless electricity, the electrical system will be more secure as it will prevent
user from electrocution of current and the power failure due to short circuit and fault or power
loss on cable would never exist..

The smart grid has many benefits like decreased the cost of block outs, aids to measure and
decrease the consumption of energy, aids the business to decrease their carbon footprints and
brings modern opportunities for the technical firms and it means that the job opportunities are
created and available for the people. There are many definitions related to the smart grid and
some are depending on its working parameters, few are depending on its mechanism and few
are benefits oriented. The term smart grid describes a smart grid and it is in use since, from
1997, the most common feature in the definitions of the smart grid is the digital processing
and exchange of information to the power grid.

Email: [email protected]

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is one of the largest growing waste
streams globally. Hence, for a sustainable environment and the economic recovery of valuable
material for reuse, the efficient recycling of electronic is a major challenge for today’s
society. In contrast to the well-established recycling of metallic scrap, it is more complicated
to recycle products which have reached the end of their life as they contain many different
types of material types integrated into each other. As illustrated primarily for the recycling of
mobile phones, the efficient recycling of WEEE is not only a challenge for the recycling
industry, a considerable lack of the consumer’s awareness for the potential of recycling
electronics for the benefit of the environment, as well as for savings in energy and raw
materials.

Energy is the key input to drive and to improve the life cycle. The consumption of
energy is directly proportional to the progress of the mankind with ever growing population,
improvement in the living standard of the humanity, industrialization of the developing
countries like India. The global demand for energy is increasing on alarming rate. The
primary source of energy is fossil fuel (like coal, diesel), which are decreasing day by day due
to move energy demand and there is global warming problem due to these sources. So non-
conventional energy sources are needed to full fill the demand of energy. Recent
improvements in the power conversion efficiencies of organic solar cells have brought
renewed attention to possibility of practical large-scale use of these devices. This paper deals

[email protected]

Spintronics also known as magneto electronics, is an emerging technology that exploits both
the intrinsic spin of the electron and its associated magnetic moment, in addition to its fundamental
electronic charge, in solid-state devices. Spintronics emerged from discoveries in the 1980s
concerning spin-dependent electron transport phenomena in solid-state devices. This includes the
observation of spin-polarized electron injection from a ferromagnetic metal to a normal
metal(1985),and the discovery of giant magneto resistance(1988). The origins of spintronics can be
traced back even further to the ferromagnetic/superconductor tunneling Experiments and initial
experiments on magnetic tunnel junctions. The use of semiconductors for spintronics can be traced
back at least as far as the theoretical proposal of a spin field-effect-transistor by Data and Das in 1990.

Inspired by the advancement in sensor technology and learning behind working of wheelchair,
in this paper develops an automated system to control the motor rotation of wheel chair based on EOG
and hand movement for physically challenged people who cannot walk due to physiological or
physical illness, injury or any other disability. The proposed system is an Electrooculography (EOG)
and Accelerometer (hand movement) controlled wheel chair. It is a special kind of wheel chair, which
will move in the desired direction based on the eye movement or hand movement of disable person.
EOG is a new technology which senses the eye signals for eye movements using electrodes. This
sense data is then given to the control unit to move the wheel chair at desired direction. Also
accelerometer is used in our proposed system for capturing the hand direction. This signals may also
used for controlling the wheel chair. Signals received from both the units processed simultaneously by
performing operations such as amplification, noise filtering and then it is given to micro controller
which drives the motors attached with wheel chair for desired movements.

Renganayagi Varatharaj College of Engineering, Sivakasi

[email protected]

“BRAIN GATE TECHNOLOGY” is a method and experiment used to directly estimate the
phonon energy generated by hot electrons during the MOSFET operation. By measuring the gate-
induced drain leakage (GIDL) current of the MOSFET(as a phonon sensor), it is easy to measure the
phonon energy generated by the hot electron scattering at a nearby MOSFET (as a phonon generator).
“BRAIN GATE” is an experiment performed with five-transistor scheme that consists of one-phonon
sensor and four-phonon generators. By using the lock-in technique in the experiment, the increment in
the GIDL current can be measured which is caused by the phonons transported from the phonon
generator. During the operation of each phonon generator on different distance and gate bias
conditions at room temperature, the equivalent lattice temperature from the variation of the GIDL
current on the assumption of the system in the near equilibrium can be estimated. Moreover, by
performing the same experiment at low temperature, it shows the measurement of the phonon energy
under a non-equilibrium of the phonons. The fundamental principle that the GIDL current can estimate
the phonon energy under the non-equilibrium as well as the equilibrium.

Nanomaterials are cornerstones of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is an
interdisciplinary area of research found major contributions to Science and Technology in the past few
years. This field revolutionized the methods of preparation of materials and functionality of devices. It
has already shown a significant influence in the fields like medicinal, technological, biological etc.
The reasons for selecting nano scale are the increased surface to volume ratio and quantum
confinement (QC) effect. The increased surface to volume ratio increases the chemical reactivity and
changes the physical strength of the materials. Further, QC effect can become much more significant
in deciding the materials properties leading to unusual behaviours.

During the past three centuries, there has always been an emphasis on
development of a kind of engine that has superior efficiency , less polluting and has good
power generation. This paper describes the new advancement in the four stroke internal
combustion engine (ICE) which has an enormous advantage. For further improvement in IC
engines, a Belgium engineer named Gerhard Schmitz presented a new innovation called five
stroke engine. This concept gained momentum and its prototype was put in reality by ILMOR
Engineering. After considerable research, it was developed with the idea of generating
expansion ratio significantly much higher than the compression ratio. This engine has a
similar torque generation and higher power density but low fuel consumption when compared
with the four stroke engine. The total efficiency is improved in the certain range.

ME02 RECENT TRENDS IN RENEWABLE ENERGY

A biofuel is a fuel that is produced through contemporary biological processes, such as
agriculture and anaerobic digestion, rather than a fuel produced by geological processes such
as those involved in the formation of fossil fuels, such as coal and petroleum, from prehistoric
biological matter. Biofuels are in theory carbon-neutral because the carbon dioxide that is
absorbed by the plants is equal to the carbon dioxide that is released when the fuel is burnt.
Biodiesel can be used as a fuel for vehicles in its pure form (B100), but it is usually used as a
diesel additive to reduce levels of particulates, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons from
diesel-powered vehicles.

ME03 BIOFUEL

Huge demand for various oils and their high prices is an apprehension for the mankind. Since
there is an increased awareness for eco-friendly issue, there is an urgent need to explore the alternative
energy sources. Various alternative energy sources like nuclear power, solar, wind and biofuels are
well known, where biofuels (solid, liquid, gas fuels) sounds as one of the best representative
candidates in terms of usage and the production process. Biofuel, is the process where energy of
organic materials (renewable biomass) is replaced the function of fossil fuels. When gasoline supply
and demand are inelastic, they serve as a buffer supply of energy, helping to reduce prices. The
inelasticity of supply and demand is an assumption which is valid in the short run, whereas in long
term both supply and demand are elastic. Processes like trans-esterification which converts animal and
vegetable oils into usable 2 fuel forms. From different sources, algae, produces a large amount of
energy. Algae represent as the significant group of biological systems, where few of them are known
to produce vast quantities of lipids relative to their total biomass.

ME04 MCYLINDER DEACTIVATION

Annmol . A
K.Ramakrishnan College of Engineering

[email protected]

Cylinder deactivation is used to reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of an
internal combustion engine during light load operation. In typical light load driving the driver
uses only around 30 percent of an engines maximum power. In these conditions, the throttle
valve is nearly closed and the engine needs to work to draw air this causes an inefficiency
known as pumping loss. The use of cylinder deactivation at light load means there are fewer
cylinders drawing air from the intake manifold which works to increase its fluid (air) pressure.
By shutting down half of an engine's cylinders the amount of fuel being consumed is much
less. Reducing the pumping losses increases the pressure in each operating cylinder and
decreases the amount of fuel being pumped into the cylinders. Fuel consumption can be
reduced by 8 to 25 percent in highway cond

ME05 THERMAL ENGINEERING

[email protected]

In thermal engineering the day to day advancement is one step to reduce the pollution.
The companies invents advance technologies to have customer’s attraction. Since the world is
moving faster than us the technology should be also innovative and effective to meet the
needs. If the automobile is still with the development of old cars it can’t be good for today.
Since the invention of the internal combustion engine, automotive engineers, speed junkies
and race car designers have been searching for ways to boost its power. One way to add
power is to build a bigger engine. But bigger engines, which weigh more and cost more to
build and maintain, are not always better. To meet these criteria automobile engineering
should create trends in each and every part of vehicles. Though the trend in automobile will
establish new design and feature it also has some disadvantages. That is the demand for the
material will be increased. If the demand get increased then economy of the car might
increase. One of the biggest trends right now in automotive engineering is improving engine
efficiency and fuel economy, This includes downsizing, down-speeding, direct fuel injection,
and boosting.

ME07 BIOMECHATRONIC HAND

P.Froulin Raj, M.Sanjaybabu

Thiagarajar College of Engineering

[email protected]

The human hand is a wonderful example of a natural biomechatronic system, which
still acts as a benchmark for robotic designers aimed at replicating its complex functionality.
Our paper proposes a biomechatronic approach to the design of an anthropomorphic artificial
hand able to mimic the natural motion of the human fingers. The hand is conceived to be
applied to prosthetics as well as to humanoid and personal robotics; hence, anthropomorphism
is a fundamental requirement to be addressed both in the physical aspect and in the functional
behavior. An ideal upper limb prosthesis should be perceived as part of the natural body by the
amputee and should replicate sensory-motor capabilities of the amputated limb. However,
such an ideal cybernetic prosthesis is still far from reality: current prosthetic hands are simple
grippers with one or two degrees of freedom, which barely restore the capability of the
thumb-index pinch. Our paper describes the design and fabrication of a prosthetic hand based
on a Bio Mechatronics and cybernetic approach. Our approach is aimed at providing natural
sensory-motor coordination to the amputee, by integrating biomimetic mechanisms, sensors,
actuators and control, and by interfacing the hand with the peripheral nervous system.

ME08 EFFECT OF PARTIALLY PREMIXED COMBUSTION IN
BURNERS

[email protected]

Burners are the major energy consuming appliances used to carry out the various
heating processes effectively. In these burners, the flames emerged due to combustion action
are of the following types: Premixed flame, Non-premixed flame and partially premixed
flame. In a premixed combustion, the fuel and the oxidizer(air) are premixed under definite
stoichiometric levels in the premixing chamber to ensure complete combustion. The major
drawback of premixed combustion is that if the premixed fuel and air mixture gets reversed
due to decrease in velocity of gas mixture, the phenomenon of flashback occurs. In a gas
appliance, it can potentially ignite a large volume of gas in the mixture, leading to explosion.
In a non-premixed combustion, the fuel and the oxidizer do not get mixed in the mixing
chamber and the fuel alone propagates through the ports followed by oxidation by acquiring
sufficient oxygen from the surrounding air. The flame produced by this type of combustion
was unstable and it reaches a height above the burner to get sufficient oxygen. It also tends to
the formation of yellow flame due to the presence of soot particles results in incomplete
combustion. Heating burners are thus designed to produce a non-luminous flame. To
overcome the drawbacks in these two types of combustion, a partially premixed combustion
arises as a new trend in which the fuel and the oxidizer(air) get premixed partially to an
amount in the premixing chamber. For complete combustion, it acquires the remaining
oxygen from the ambient air. This partially premixed combustion finds various applications in
household cooktop burners, gas turbines, heaters, heat treatment processes of metals, metal
extraction processes, etc.,

Around the world, a large proportion of urban and inter-urban transport systems
remain inaccessible to persons with disabilities. Mobility constraints are a serious impediment
to disability-inclusive development, as they exacerbate the personal, economic, and social
isolation of persons with disabilities and tend to push them further into poverty. Physically
challenged people are shining everywhere. To solve this problem, we have to deliver transport
infrastructure and services that can be accessible to all users, including those with disabilities.
The equipment which is going to help many physically challenged people comes with a Radio
Frequency Identification (RFID) receiver. The usage of RFID based access to solve this
problem is the major innovation of the project. The main target beneficiary group for our
innovation is the school students. Especially the physically challenged students. Since
education is the main need of the era, physical disability should not be a hindrance for such
students to get it. It also helps students who are to come from long distance.

In the recent times, the issues of reduction of harmful pollutants emitted from an
internal combustion engine have gained large prominence as a part of climate change and
global warming. Automobile and power generation systems are identified to be one of the
largest contributors to atmospheric pollution. Some of the major pollutants emitted from an
engine are Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), Carbon monoxide (CO), Unburnt Hydrocarbon
(UBHC) and soot particles. This new catalytic converter to be used for compressed ignition
engine. The catalytic converter is developed based on the catalyst materials consisting of
metal oxides such as silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide coated with wire mesh filter. Both
the catalyst materials - silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide are inexpensive in comparison
with conventional catalysts such as palladium or platinum.

[email protected]

Incineration is a waste treatment process that involves

the combustion of organic substances contained in waste materials. Incineration and other

high-temperature waste treatment systems are described as "thermal treatment". Incineration

of waste materials converts the waste into ash, flue gas and heat. The ash is mostly formed by

the inorganic constituents of the waste and particulates carried by the flue gas. The flue gases

must be cleaned of gaseous and particulate pollutants before they are dispersed into

the atmosphere. In some cases, the heat generated by incineration can be used to

generate electric power.Incineration with energy recovery is one of several waste-to-

energy (WtE) technologies such as gasification, pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion.

Soil Biotechnology is a modern technology which is used to treat the wastewater
effectively, which is less expensive and eco-friendly. In SBT, granular medium like soil,
gravels and sand, biological medium like earthworm, bacteria and plants are used. This
technology is used where there is no sewer transportation and only limited space is available.
In this concept, alluvial soil, E-Festida earthworm and Aloe Vera plant are used to treat
domestic water. Domestic wastewater are collected through open drainage and is treated.
Treated water by SBT plant meets the discharge norms of pollution control and can be used as
recycled water. In this plant there are no moving parts except the pump, so, there is no noise
generated from the plant unlike other wastewater treatments.

ME14 SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL SYSTEM

M.Mariselvam.
St. Mother Theresa Engineering College.

[email protected]

Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) works electronically, and thus faster and more
precisely, than a conventional hydraulic braking system. As soon as you press the brake pedal
and the sensors identify the driving situation in hand, the computer makes an exact calculation
of the brake force necessary and distributes it between the wheels as required. This allows
SBC to critically reduce stopping distances. SBC also helps to optimise safety functions such
as ESP, ASR, ABS and BAS. With Sensotronic Brake Control, electric impulses are used to
pass the driver's braking commands onto a microcomputer which processes various sensor
signals simultaneously and, depending on the particular driving situation, calculates the
optimum brake pressure for each wheel. As a result, SBC offers even greater active safety
than conventional brake systems when braking in a corner or on a slippery surface.

ME15 MACHINING OF METAL MATRIX COMPOSITE USING
ABRASIVE WATER JET MACHINE

[email protected]

Abrasive Water Jet Machining (AWJM) is one of the unconventional machining
processes, in which the material is removed by the impact of high pressure water, along with
entrained abrasives. The input parameters involved in the AWJM system are water jet
pressure, abrasive flow rate, orifice diameter, nozzle diameter, particle size of the abrasive,
abrasive type, etc. Metal matrix composites (MMC) are widely used in the industries such as
automobile, defense, aerospace etc. This work is an attempt to study on machinability of
aluminum alloy 7075 (Al 7075) reinforcement with 10% silicon carbide (SiC) particulate.
AWJM experiments were conducted on trapezoidal shaped metal matrix composite by
varying abrasive mesh size, abrasive flow rate, water jet pressure and traverse rate to obtain
higher material removal rate, depth of cut and better surface finish. The experiments are
carried out based on Response Surface Methodology (RSM) designed using Box-Behnken
method for four parameters into three levels. Using response surface graph the significant
AWJM machining parameters and their levels are identified to achieve higher material
removal rate, depth of cut and better surface finish.

ME16 DESIGN OF LOW COST STIR CASTING MACHINE

[email protected]

Non-homogeneous particle distribution is one of the greatest problems in casting of
metal matrix composites (MMC’s), because of the fact that ceramic materials have different
density, melting point and boiling point. But other lighter materials like Aluminium, copper
and magnesium etc, have less density of melting point and boiling point, so ceramic particle
mixing is very difficult to light materials. In this low cost stir casting machine the particle pre
heater attached in the side portions of the furnace, because of red hot condition with constant
temperature of particle injected by push rod into the molten metal. The stirrer rod designed by
variation of speed (0-2000rpm) for mixing purpose and it is fixed at the top of the machine.
The stir casting furnace has two main parts that enable to perform all its operations, they are:
Furnace Elements and Control Panel. The term stir-casting is the process of stirring
molten metal’s are used for continuous stirring particles into metal alloy to melt and
immediately pour into the sand mould then cooled and allow to solidity. In stir-casting,
the particles often tend to form agglomerates, which can be only dissolved by vigorous
stirring at high temperature. The purpose of a stir casting machine is to melt the metal
and then pour it to the die for the required shape. In any stir casting machine there
must be a furnace to melt the metal and all the furnace must having the heating element
and makes the changes in heating element only varies the capacity of the furnace. In
the furnace, we are using silicon carbide rod as our heating element to increase and maintain
the level of heat to 1450oC with the help of control panel. SiC rod can be used to melt any
kind of materials and also we can mix the reinforcement material in a better composition.

ME17 FRACTAL ROBOTICS

The principle behind Fractal Robots is very simple. You take some cubic bricks made
of metals and plastics, motorize them, put some electronics inside them and control them with
a computer and you get machines that can change shape from one object to another. Almost
immediately, you can now build a home in a matter of minutes if you had enough bricks and
instruct the bricks to shuffle around and make a house! It is exactly like kids playing with
Lego bricks and making a toy hose or a toy bridge by snapping together Lego bricks-except
now we are using computer and all the work is done under total computer control. No manual
intervention is required. Fractal Robots are the hardware equivalent of computer software. A
fractal is anything which has a substantial measure of exact or statistical self-similarity.
Wherever you look at any part of its body it will be similar to the whole object. A Fractal O. S
coverts fractally written code into machine commands for movement. The data signals are fed
to a bus (fractal bus). The electronics have to be kept simple so that they can be miniaturized.
Towards this end, the Fractal Robot uses principally state logic. So its internal design consists
if ROM,RAM and some counters. A fractal is anything which has a substantial measure of
exact or statistical self-similarity. Wherever you look at any part of its body it will be similar
to the whole object.

ME18 AN ALTERNATE FUEL IN I.C ENGINE USING PONGAMIA OIL

[email protected]

Energy, a crucial input in the process of economic, social and industrial development
is of vital importance. Fossil fuels like petroleum and Diesel are the primary energy resources
that contribute more to global energy requirement. Petroleum derivatives cater to the entire
fuel needs of internal combustion engines, and contribute largely to the mobility of our
modern society, identified as the transportation sector. Even the optimistic estimates predict
that the fossil fuels, in particular petroleum oil will be depleted within three decades due to
the steep rate of its consumption. So there is a strong quest for alternate fuels. The work
presented is an attempt to evaluate Pongamia oil as a fuel for compression ignition engine,
compared to Diesel. The experiment was conducted on a Kirloskar engine, which was
operated both on Pongamia oil and Diesel under identical conditions. Their performance and
combustion characteristics were analyzed and it was found that Pongamia oil is an acceptable
and beneficial CI engine fuel.

Gyroscopic action is the rotation of a spinning body’s axis. The understanding of
gyroscopic action is crucial for vehicle and aircraft engineering design. Stabilizing a system
like an automobile or a plane requires awareness of gyroscopic effects that may alter the
stability of the system. Consequently, the focus of this experiment was to study the
gyroscopic couple, angular velocity of the rotor, and the precession velocity. Additionally, the
mass moment of inertia of the rotor-disk was determined via two methods. Forte first method,
the reciprocal of the precession velocity versus the rotor velocity was plotted and the slope of
the graph provided the moment of inertia, which was 0.000464 kg*m2. The second method
involved observing the torsional oscillation of the suspended rotor and disk. Method two
yielded a moment of inertia equal to .000682 kg*m2. The second method gave a slightly
higher moment of inertia and served to prove the validity of method one’s equation.

ME22 THE USE OF ADVANCED BRAKING SYSTEM IN
AUTONOMOUS CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR AUTOMOBILES

Sivakumar.D,Subramania Raja.T

[email protected]

In today’s modern world there exists a time delay for each and everyone. Most of the
accidents take place because of the hurry burry drive we do with the vehicles. Due to the
improper braking system, most of the accidents happen. A report from the Government of
India states that 3,85,934 road accidents have happened in the year of 2012 in which Tamil
Nadu has the highest contribution i.e., 57,507 accidents. It is clearly proved that nearly 20%
of the road accidents in India take place in Tamil Nadu. Most of the foreign countries started
practising the usage of advanced braking system. It is not too late for us now. Let us realize
the importance of the advanced braking system and install in our vehicle and have a safer
journey. So it is recommended to have an advanced braking system to avoid such kind of
accidents. This paper is about the use of advanced braking system in autonomous cruise
control systems for automobiles to control the accidents which keep on increasing everyday
due to the improper handling of braking system and to prevent the accidents in future. A
proximity sensor is a sensor able to detect the presence of nearby objects without any physical
contact. A proximity sensor often emits an electromagnetic field or a beam of electromagnetic
radiation (infrared, for instance), and looks for changes in the field or return signal. The
accidents due to the old type of braking systems can be reduced by the usage of the following
proximity sensors. Namely, LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) , Camera employing
Image Recognition and Radar
