Welcome to the 48th Annual Good Scout Dinner, honoring Bob
Dold. No Good Scout got to where they are today without
standing on the shoulders of those who came before him.
Throughout the years, Bob was influenced by many “Good
Scouters” who came before him, and laid the foundation for
what a Good Scout should be. Tonight we will learn more about
these gentlemen and how they’ve influenced Bob’s life.

ABOUT BOB DOLD
Since earning the Eagle Scout Rank in Troop 13,
Kenilworth in 1986, Robert “Bob” Dold has been
taking the Eagle Charge to heart. This led to his
journey of Service to Community and Service to
Country, serving two terms as a Representative
for Illinois‘ 10th Congressional District in the
United States Congress. Bob is President of Rose
Pest Solutions, the country’s oldest pest solution
company. He resides in Kenilworth with his wife,
Danielle, and three Scout-strong children.
BOB TOWNLEY
In 1922, Bob Townley was hired as the physical education teacher at the
Joseph Sears School, and began his long career of voluntary service as
Kenilworth’s Troop 13 Scoutmaster. Bob was far more than just a Scoutmaster
and physical education instructor; he was also a mentor, a coach, and camp
counselor. Bob was everywhere and everything to the boys and young men
of Kenilworth. Bob had a room at the YMCA in Evanston, but seemed to live in
Kenilworth, the North Shore, and in the woods. He had a profound effect on
the lives of those he led. His values and spirit have always been with the troop,
which is why he is heralded as the father of Troop 13.
ABOUT THE
GOOD SCOUT DINNER
Each year, the Good Scout Dinner proves to be an uplifting
and engaging experience for our friends and donors, and
raises a substantial portion of the budget for the Northeast
Illinois Council (NEIC). The NEIC uses these funds to deliver
the Scouting program throughout Northern Cook and Lake
Counties, touching thousands of lives as we work to develop
our future leaders.
Through this event, we recognize someone who has had a
tremendous impact on the community in his professional
life and/or within the realm of Scouting. Thanks Bob Dold,
for living Scouting‘s principles and for understanding the
importance of teaching our young people that leadership
is an essential part of who we are.
Artie Bergman and Charlie Barnes
Artie Bergman and Charlie Barnes were two of Bob Townley’s Scouts. When they
returned from WWII they worked with Bob for about ten years, learning how to
run a Scout troop. In 1955, Bob Townley retired from Sears School after 35 years,
but planned to continue on as Scoutmaster. Bob went down to Florida for a short
vacation in August and September. In early September, Artie and Charlie received
a phone call saying that they had just heard that Bob had died from a heart attack.
The chairman of the troop, Whitey Mathias, asked Artie and Charlie to step up and
run the troop. Artie remembers that Whitey asked them, “For just this year, and that
next year he’d get us a Scoutmaster.” Charlie and Artie remained in Scouting for a
much longer time than that one year, and Kenilworth is happy that they did.

Arthur W. (Artie) Bergman, Jr.
“Artie” (featured far left) was dedicated to Troop 13, Scouting and
community service. Every problem had a solution, and he found a
way for his Scouts to be part of that solution. Artie was always the
spokesperson for Troop 13 and a role model for all the boys.
INVESTING IN OUR YOUTH
Scouting continues to be one of the foremost leadership
programs for young people across the globe. When we
consider the challenges that parents, employers and peers
face when communicating with our youth, we consistently
hear how mature, organized and resourceful our Scouts
are. When it comes to respect, determination and results,
you can count on this program to continue to develop
our future leaders. When you give to Scouting, you are
providing us with the tools to continue to support the
youth we serve, and ultimately make our future brighter
for all generations.
OUR YOUTH PROGRAMS
Signing up as a Lion Cub is just the beginning of the
journey through the Scouting program. We offer exciting
activities meant to stimulate the mind, strengthen the
body, and instill values and morals that carry through
a child‘s development. Whether a young Scout aims to
become an Eagle Scout dedicated to service, a Venturer
exploring our nation‘s topography, or an Explorer
discovering a future in the robotics industry, Scouting
offers something for everyone. The Northeast Illinois
Council serves over 12,000 youth. Just imagine how 12,000
young people, living by the Scout Oath and Law, can make
a difference for us, our local communities, and our nation.
Charles O. (Charlie) Barnes
As a premier adventurer and story teller, “Charlie” lived and recounted
some of the best Troop 13 stories of all time. Charlie had always been
a Troop 13 Scout or Scout leader, and was a role model for all Troop 13
Scouts. With 70+ years in Scouting, he inspired more young men than
anyone in Kenilworth’s history.

Lee E. Getschow
“Lee babe” (featured far right) brought incredible enthusiasm to
everything he did, including Troop 13 and the Rebel football program.
He was responsible for ensuring that Kenilworth athletes were also
Scouts. High school boys need an exciting program, and Lee delivered
the best high school Scout program in the country. Boys need role
models and Lee was a “bigger than life” leader and role model to all.
