Colonel Charles Young
Described as “a rare and cultured soul” by a 1903 resident of
Three Rivers, Charles Young was a man of depth and breadth.
A military man not only in training but in vast experience, he was
as comfortable in the wilderness as he was in society. He spoke
several languages, played musical instruments and wrote plays.
Later in life, he served as a diplomat and traveled overseas. He was
a husband and a father.
Young had chosen the military as a means to serve his country Col. Charles Young was
and his race. In 1903, he received orders to take his troops to the first African-American
Sequoia National Park which, after 13 years in existence, still lacked superintendent of a
an adequate wagon road to the Giant Forest. Young poured his national park.
considerable energies into the project and, by mid-August,
wagons were entering the mountain-top forest for the first time. Not satisfied, Young
continued the work until the road reached Moro Rock. During that summer, Young and his
troops built as much road as had been completed over the three previous summers.
Young was a contemporary of Booker T. Washington, a black man with similar goals but
different tactics. The two corresponded, and Young’s admiration for the man prompted him
to name one of the park’s giant sequoias in his honor.
The energy and dignity that Young brought to his national park assigment, and his tenure
as a park superintendent, left a strong imprint. His roads, though much improved in later
times, are still in use today. A portion of State Highway 198 near the Sequoia National Park
entrance was renamed “Colonel Charles Young Memorial Highway” in 2019.

The Walter Fry
Story
In 1881, 29-year-old Walter Fry arrived in Tulare
County from Illinois. After working for a month
as a “tree feller,” he and four men cut down a
giant sequoia. Fry counted the 3,266 growth
rings and quit his job, stating, “I will never do
that again.” It was a moment that would change
the trajectory of his life.
By the time Fry retired at age 71, he had served
as a park ranger, park superintendent,
author, guide and federal judge, dedicated
to preserving giant sequoias. In the coming
decades, there were many other Tulare County
residents who, like Walter Fry, stepped
forward to help save these unique natural
treasures for the world to enjoy.
After cutting down a 3,266-year-old giant sequoia and counting the growth
rings, tree feller Walter Fry quit his job, stating, “I will never do that again.”
