Preface
Effective literacy development results from the use of a combination of age-appropriate
resources and effective teaching strategies. It is important to engage children’s interests,
provide enjoyable and suitable literacy materials, and support learners in their progress. The
growth of literacy skills is an essential part of a child’s overall development and children who
have experiences with language and print from a young age are more likely to develop a solid
literacy foundation.
A collection of four fiction-based stories have thus been produced to complement the
Standard 3 Let’s Learn English textbook and make the learning of English more enjoyable for
our learners. The collection constitutes interesting stories that appeal to children, attractive
illustrations that support the construction of meaning, and suitably-sized print that make the
stories ideal material for interactive whole class activities, guided reading, and free reading
opportunities.
The stories are meant to be used during the literacy sessions that are conducted on the
completion of specific units in the textbook. A thematic link has been established between
a given unit and a short story in the collection. Each story is followed by a set of activities to
develop requisite literacy skills in a fun and entertaining manner. The activities aim to extend
the learning that has taken place during the English lessons.
The literacy stories and activities are presented as a separate collection to encourage pupils to
enjoy reading in English, enable them to develop their own personal library, and inspire them
to begin reading with some independence; albeit with continued assistance and support from
the teacher as needed.
We hope that the Standard 3 pupils fully engage in and enjoy the literacy sessions and that
these promote their interest in the learning of English.
