What is • The Nursing Board Malaysia with the
Continuous cooperation from Continuing
Professional Professional Development (CPD) Unit,
Developmen Ministry of Health (MOH), has produce
t (CPD)? the Continuing Professional
Development Guidelines that
describes the activities of registered
nurses in relation to continuing
professional developments.

Definition of CPD in this context is defined as
CPD
• “a process of lifelong learning aimed at
meeting patients’ needs and improving
health outcomes by systemic
improvement and broadening of
knowledge, understanding and skills in
the development of personal qualities
which are necessary for the execution
of professional duties, including the
acquisition of new roles and
responsibilities”.

Degree • The Nursing (Hons.) programme
in most of University in Malaysia
is four years duration and
incorporates a substantial
amount of guided clinical
practice in hospitals and health
care settings as well as a range of
campus-based theoretical and
laboratory-based teaching /
learning activities.

Degree • After obtaining a baccalaureate degree in nursing,
nurses can pursue graduate education leading to a
master’s or doctoral degree.

theory, with emphasis on the basic sciences and
research-based clinical practice.

Master • A master’s degree in nursing is important for the
roles of nurse educator and nurse administrator,
and it is required for an advanced practice
registered nurse

• Most students who enter master’s degree
programs attend classes on a part-time basis
while they are working and may take up to 5
years to complete the requirements.

• Many universities have recognized this trend and
have tailored their programs to meet the needs
of these part-time students; universities now
offer courses over the Internet, distance
education in the evening and on weekends, or 1-
day-aweek programs.

Doctorate • Professional doctoral programs in nursing
(DSN or DNSc) prepare graduates to apply
research findings to clinical nursing.

• Other doctoral programs emphasize more
basic research and theory and award the
research-oriented Doctor of Philosophy
(PhD) in nursing.

• The major purpose of early doctoral
degrees was to prepare the individual to
conduct advanced research in a particular
area of interest.
