Dear Readers,

cover of our July edition. Violet has some
exciting news to share. She introduces some of
our amazing fur kid team who talk about how
our animal rescue evolved from 1997 to where
we are now after more than 13,000 dog
adoptions. Marvel, Nyx, Kobe, Reef, Ruby,
Kenai, Tolkien, Peyton and Violet all say thank
you for being rescued.

Bec, a regular volunteer shares some deeper
thoughts about animal rescue and the unique
relationships she has developed with Khaleesi,
Mabel and Piper. It is all about slow and steady
bonding – no short cuts into a dog’s heart.

In the spotlight we have Mabel, and Sonya talks
about her insights into this lovely lady. She has
transformed from a nervous teenager who did
not know how to engage with people or dogs to
a sensitive lady who walks calmly by your side “

Of course the answer

chance was given to her

very special lady who
thought EVERY life
was precious…..

Let us go back to 1997… “ Reef ”

About twenty four years ago a propensity for
cruelty was noted by a very special person who
felt that the way that the abandoned, neglected,
unloved and unwanted dogs were dealt with in
Sydney, was appalling and unnecessary. There
had to be a better way!!

It was the cool determination and incredible
capacity for hard work by Monika Biernacki that
saw the birth of Doggie Rescue and its growth to
Sydney’s largest privately run no kill dog welfare
agency, now celebrating over 13,000 adoptions.

“ Violet ”

One amazing fact is that of the over 13,000
abandoned pets rescued by Monika not one has
ever been discriminated against due to its breed,
size, age or personality. The big ones, the small
ones, the thin ones, the fat ones, the depressed
ones, the confident ones, the yappy ones and the
snappy ones , the dogs who had medical conditions
and yes the senior ones like Reef pictured above…
DoggieRescue saved them all!

I can only wonder at the years of enjoyment these adopted animals brought, and continue to bring,
to their adopted families. One only has to look into the eyes of all the doggies available for adoption
on these pages and in this month’s edition of DoggieRescue magazine, and indeed every month’s
edition, to wonder what their story is and pick up on the incredible capacity for love that they have
if only given a second chance.

IN DEPTH FEATURE A Deeper Meaning of

the Human-Doggie
Written by: BEC SALLIT,
DoggieRescue Feeder
& Walker Relationship

Working with rescue dogs these last
12 months has been the highlight of
my life. Being a dog lover, it came as
a surprise to me to learn there is a
lot of stigma surrounding rescue
dogs, particularly the pups that
demonstrate “problematic”
behaviour. And so, when I was
asked if I would be interested in
writing on a dog, I was compelled to
write a story with a central message
about all of the pups, young and old.
It is their unique personalities we fall
in love with and not their behaviours.
Don’t get me wrong, understanding
and reshaping behaviours is
important for the dog’s
empowerment and development,
not just their prospects for adoption.
Though, if we only look at surface
behaviours and not seek to under-
stand why dogs do the things they
do, we can potentially miss out on
getting to know a truly beautiful
creature who may become an
extension of our family.
“ After 4 months of
working with Khaleesi
(pictured at left ) a
‘fear-aggressive’ dog,
whom I couldn’t touch
nor make eye contact
with, she is now what I
call a licking torpedo.

JULY 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 13

Admittedly, loving a dog for their
uniqueness was hard for me at first.
I had become a sucker to the
misconceptions that this article is
attempting to demystify about rescue
dogs. I was interested in the good-looking
dog that was not of mixed breed because
we sadly have a fascination with wanting
to know their breed. Their lineage. Which
is ironic because outside of understanding
my own assumed inherited culture, I know
nothing about my own DNA. Yet we have
this bizarre desire to label a dog according
to how they look and to know their breed
so we can make a snap decision on their
suitability. Think about the Staffy stigma
and society labelling them as dangerous
dogs.

Another assumption working at the
shelter challenged for me was once a
dog has been classified as showing
signs of ‘fear-aggression’, that they
will no longer be able to interact with
people they do not know. Speaking
from experience, this is so far from the
truth that the myth has become legend.
After 4 months of working with a ‘fear-
aggressive’ dog, one whom I couldn’t
touch nor make eye contact with, she is
now what I call a licking torpedo. My new
found friend has taught me what patience For a Great Dane, I do recognise the complications this brings due to
and doggy-consent looks like. I have Mabel’s size. But I can easily forgive her after she settles down and
learnt dogs have a level of intelligence gazes into your eyes as she starts to feel safe. Mabel will also lean
and an understanding of personal into you while you pet her favourite spot near her ribs. All good signs
boundaries. of the attachment process unfolding between us.

My licking torpedo friend, Khaleesi, didn’t want me to Which brings me to another thought about
rush our relationship by me overwhelming her, or relationship building with rescue dogs. We all
smothering her if you will, because it’s what I thought assume that dogs have a history of trauma which might
would be helpful for her to heal from her fear. It took explain their behaviours. In some cases, this might be
me a while to learn this and apply it to how I behave in true, but the vast majority of the time their behaviours
the world – would I allow someone, who I do not know, are due to stress. Think about it. Dogs have a central
who is bigger than me and has me restrained to be in nervous system just like humans. When our nervous
my personal space AND forcibly be affectionate with system is over aroused and flooded we will do almost
me?!? Absolutely not. However, once trust becomes anything to lessen that inner tension, such as drinking
reciprocal – yes, dogs need to learn to trust US just as or exercise. Dogs are no different. They just express
much as we need to trust them – then we can expect their behaviour differently, like my favourite goofball
a mutually agreeable affectionate relationship. So Mabel, who is full of so much pent-up excitement that
slow exposure to new people and new environments she will jump all over you.
is the key!

14 JULY 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE

And finally, spending time at the dog shelter
has helped to demystify for me that reactive
dogs won’t ever be able to get along with
other animals. Dogs are social creatures, just
like humans. We both seek out connection,
companionship, and acceptance in the hopes
of finding a loving relationship. And just like all
relationships, it can take time to find the right
fit; human-dog and dog-dog. But what they
need from us humans are caring people who
will recognise their needs and not to place them
(and other dogs) in any discomfort, all because
WE want them to get along. Or we are trying to
find ways to ways to short-cut exercise time for
our furry friends. I saw this first hand spending
time with Piper at the shelter.

The little nut ball, who is so full of energy, would
lunge and bark at passing dogs on our walks.
This got me thinking Piper is not suitable to be
around other dogs. I was wrong in making my
assumption as I see Piper loves to spend time
with dogs who are calm, less energetic and
come as no surprise, not reactive like herself.
If you think about it, reflecting on the last time
you were anxious and there was another
person who was equally anxious. Did the In fact, I would hedge a scientific guess to say that this same
anxiety and tension between you two seem reciprocal co-dysregulation effect of anxiety in humans produces

Still Smell Love

There was a lot of interest around the arrival of an 18 month old Pointer x Bull Arab at
DoggieRescue recently, she has the softest ears, loves to smooch and is quite partial to
a squeaky toy! She was named Twilight. So what's so interesting about Twilight? She is
vision impaired.

WRITTEN BY:
JEN BARBOUR
DoggieRescue Volunteer

She appears to have some
vision, she responds to light
when she goes out into her day
yard and to the shadows when
she crosses a doorway inside.
At the time of writing this
DoggieRescue was seeking an
ophthalmic specialist's advice on
her condition.

Twilight is such a sweet happy
girl, she dances while on walks
as she loves to explore and sniff
all the smells. She is most
comfortable on a short lead by
your side as she can become
overwhelmed. We often walk her
on chain leads so she can hear
the jangle of the lead and knows
you are near.

I've never personally had
a blind dog (I've had seniors
whose vision has started to
fade but never to the degree
of Twilights) so I was curious
how a blind dog lives.

Leave a Legacy of Love
Nathan the resident dog trainer gave me the
following advice:
Because you will always care.
• Maintain your floor plan, sounds obvious right? A
dog can map out a layout in its brain so it doesn't
bump into things but if you start moving the
couch around it confuses and distresses them
• One level homes are best as stairs are not easy
for blind dogs, Twilight is so relaxed and easy
going she is apartment friendly. A ground floor
apartment would suit her best as daily stairs
would stress her out.
• Use your voice and talk to them all the time. Try
commands like, "careful" and "step up" and "step
down" to teach dogs when a step is coming.
• Consider clicker training, it's easier for a dog to
respond to a consistently mechanical sound than
a complicated instruction.

Consider investing in leads, collars, harnesses or
even tags that alert people your dog is blind - these
can encourage others to put their dogs back on lead
around yours and allow gentle introductions. Please remember DoggieRescue in your Will.
After spending time with Twilight I've learnt she
doesn't let her visual impairment slow her down, she
loves to play and explore. I think she would really
enjoy nose work - where they sniff to find a reward,
you can use snuffle mats or hide treats around a
space for her to find. You can also get enrichment
toys that are aimed at a dog's other senses; sound Mr/Mrs/Ms/Other
and smell which Twilight would really benefit from.

Volunteer walker MABEL

Mabel is a stunning dog and while
she looks majestic and strong, this
beauty Is more than meets the eye.
Super sweet Mabel is shy and nervous
when you first meet her and takes her
time to get to know people. This gorgeous
graceful looking girl likes to jump around
and can also be a little goofy and clumsy
which just makes her even more adorable
and endearing. Mabel loves her snacks so
give her a snack and she fast tracks her
approval of you as a new friend. She’s not
fussy with her treats and any treat will
make her day. She can sniff out a snack
like a pro, so don’t leave them in your
pocket or she will move in close and give
you a look with her puppy dog eyes and
you may find it hard to say no to her!

Mabel can get a little scared of cars or
sudden movements so needs a gentle and
calm approach, but once she gets started
and you have her trust she is a great
walker and loves some gentle pats and ear
rubs, and enjoys leaning into you. Mabel
does also enjoy a little jog at times but she
also loves to slow down and sniff around
and discover her surroundings by smelling
and slowly exploring trees, grass or bush
tracks. She definitely prefers a quieter walk
away from roads and busy places, and
even sometimes prefers to just sniff around
and explore rather than a big walk.

Beautiful Mabel is looking for that

Hi Fans,

Mrs McPhee lives next door.
She’s really old. She has a
doggie called Polly who’s so
fat ‘cause poor thing—she
XXXXX THE RABBIT
never goes for a walk or a run
in the park. Mum told me Mrs
McPhee would be sad and
lonely without Polly....

Mum asked if Polly could come for a walk with me when
we go twice a day. We can’t go as far as we used to now
because Polly’s ‘out of condition’ but her tail is wagging
again ( boy, it’s a weapon!!!) and this morning she gave
me slurpy kisses all over my face. Talk about excited. When
Mum goes next door and clips the lead on her Polly cries
and whimpers—it’s embarrassing. She even wet herself the
other day ( Polly—not Mum!).

I like being a ‘good neighbour’ though and I got a pat from
Mrs McPhee this morning too and you know she watched us
all the way down to the corner—I looked back and saw
her!!! It’s so sad to be old but if people help you then it
makes life BETTER and it does not take much time or effort.
I’m getting used to Polly’s company every day, she is sort of
my best friend now. And...guess what!!! Some yummy
cakes turned up at our place ( Mummy gave me a little bit )
from Mavis ( Mrs McPhee is Mavis now!!! ) Do you have an

“Donald

Gelsomino”

Don became family 2 years ago when he
was 10ish. I had moved from Brisbane to
Sydney for work and was needing a friend.

When I first met Donald he was quite shy and
hesitant. He was very protective of his booty
and didn’t like being picked up. But he was
house trained (thank goodness for no puppy
poops), knew basic commands, social with
other dogs and walked very well on the lead
(albeit a little slow…he has to investigate all
of the trees).

Over the first few months I
slowly gained his trust, hitting
small milestones like picking
him up for the first time and
him snuggling close by on the
couch. He loves sitting at the
park on the weekend while I
read, watching my footy games
and cuddling on my lap at the
pub afterwards .

“ I always thought I needed
to get a puppy to form a
strong connection, but
Donald has proved that
wrong.” Emma

I am his person and he loves
and trusts me completely. But
what has also been so heart
warming is how much my
partner has also gained his
trust and love over the last
year, with Donald lying on his
lap in the evenings or by his

Don has come a long way in the last 2 years and
his true personality has come through. He gets
us out of bed each day, sometimes he does a big
exaggerated stretch and yawn when we’ve slept in
too long and if he could talk I imagine him saying
“Hello guys it’s me I’m ready for attention now”.

It has been an absolute pleasure to be able to love
My two boys Don for the last 2 years. All he wants is love and a few
relaxing slow walks around the block each day. I thank
Monika’s DoggieRescue for bringing him into my life
and although he won’t be in my life as long as a
puppy, I am lucky to share his final years.

Hello Readers,

When we asked Cooper if he wanted the July
DR magazine to get “UP CLOSE & PERSONAL”
with him the first thing he wanted to know was
if there was any food involved? If so, he said to
talk to his agent to organize the details. Cooper
loves attention and has quite a fan following
