Dear Readers,
Winter is truly upon us and what better way to keep warm Monika is
than have a husky by your side! Our sad looking Pepper pictured with
who joined us a bit later is such a regal girl who has already gorgeous new
experienced living with other dogs in a foster home and arrival Tommy
learning some basic lead training. She is so ready for a
committed family who know what huskies are all about.
Huskies are all so different. Some are quite relaxed
around people like Echo and Dee (just adopted), whilst
others like Blizzard, Coconut, Jango and Ranger we will
need more work before we see their personalities unfold. I
hope you enjoy some of the photos our volunteers have
taken that capture their different expressions and moods.
Roland continues his series on our history and this month
features Jen Barbour who has done most volunteer jobs at
DR before settling into running our Events and Fundraising
teams as well as always finding time to help with whatever
urgent need crops up. Just an amazing lady who is good at
multi-tasking! We are very lucky to have her support.
With school holidays underway we have highlighted some
of the kid friendly dogs with their smiley faces all eager to “

some human attention. He enjoys going for walks and
runs, and is one of our easier huskies.
This month we are featuring more of the photos that
have been taken by our volunteers who have a
special relationship with particular dogs….so these
pictures come from the heart. They are often dogs that
are not walked by the public as they need special
handling skills. Nevertheless they have beautiful traits that
are only revealed once they trust you.
Kayla features Moe this month, another dog only
walked with trusted volunteers. He is a gorgeous sooky
boy who is great with kids but would like to be away from
other dogs so a busy shelter with lots of dogs is not a
place he does well in. However, we are helping him be
calm and relax. Volunteer Miri has a soft spot for Fig
another one of our child friendly girls who has already
learnt some basic obedience and is just waiting for
someone to fall in love with her.

THE BEGINNING….
Late in 2021 a number of rescue groups joined forces in what was a mass rescue of nearly one
hundred mixed breed Siberian Huskies. That much is well known. These desperately needy dogs had
been kept in appalling conditions. All were timid, but some were more so, and clearly terrified of people
and new situations. Most were starved to the point of emaciation and, in what is such a shocking case of
cruelty, all had had to fight for the small amount of food that was just thrown in a yard. The condition of
many of these dogs, a proud breed of Siberian Husky, was enough to sicken anyone who loved animals.
Though room was tight we managed to rescue some thirty of these dogs. None had been handled or
groomed, all were undesexed, their bones standing out from their emaciated frames. They did not know love
or gentle care, had never experienced a walk or played with toys or a ball. It was a huge task firstly to get
them to trust a human, and secondly, to find a way to make them relax and not feel fear. Feeding them up
was not a problem!!!
LOOK AT THEM NOW!
It is now July, seven months down the track from when these Siberian Huskies were rescued. Their coats
glow with health and they are now a good weight for their breed, their eyes shine and they have energy to
burn. The younger ones are playing, with each other especially, as huskies love their packs. At Doggie
Rescue we were so fortunate enough to find sponsors, both in this magazine and also on our Save a
Husky Life Saver Program to help towards the significant veterinary costs involved but even their day to
day care is ongoing with many of the older ones still very timid and scared.
THE FUTURE
In this, our first digital only issue, we are highlighting again these magnificent dogs. The amazing photos
taken by Kim Bernotas & Martha Pavlakis, both volunteers, show how far that these dogs have travelled
in the seven months they have been at DoggieRescue shelter. But….we are only half way there! These
dogs need HOMES. They deserve the one on one attention that only a loving family can give. So far just two
have been adopted and one is in foster care. Yes we love them all but with so many Siberian Huskies and
also many other abandoned dogs as well to care for we cannot give them what a forever family could.
ADOPT/ FOSTER
With every rescued animal who is adopted there is always some sort of baggage, especially with dogs who
have been mistreated, but don’t let this put you off. The first few days/weeks can be challenging but think of
the joy when an animal who has only known fear and suffering finally looks at you with love in its eyes. It will
take patience and consistency, you will need to go slowly and take small steps but by spending quality time
together and gaining your dog’s trust you will see the difference that kindness and empathy can make.
INTERESTED?
Speak to Monika and take her advice on whatever your chosen dog needs to make him or her feel
comfortable with you. Importantly take the time to visit this dog over a period of some weeks. Let them get
to know you and your family first before adopting. If you have another dog it is also important that they also
meet. A dog who has been mistreated needs time to bond...find that time! To see an animal who has only
known loneliness and fear adjust and become a beloved companion is just the most wonderful experience.

SIBERIAN HUSKIES—THE BREED
The Siberian Husky is a medium-sized working sled
dog breed. The breed belongs to the Spitz genetic
family. It is recognizable by its thickly furred double
coat, erect triangular ears, and distinctive markings,
and is smaller than the similar-looking Alaskan
Malamute
Temperament : Outgoing, Friendly, Intelligent, Alert,
Gentle
Yes, Siberian huskies shed. Unlike other dog breeds
that shed year-round, huskies shed once or twice a
year due to seasonal changes.
Despite their tough, wolf-like appearances, Siberian
huskies are incredibly friendly— sometimes to a fault!
Anyone looking for a husky guard dog will be sorely
disappointed, because huskies are simply too friendly
and too trusting of strangers. The upside to this
charming character trait? They make amazing furry
family members.

THE BUILDING OF A NO-KILL SHELTER:

“Little did I know that DoggieRescue events would introduce me to people who

at the shelter” This quote from Jen Barbour reminds me of the Paul Kelly song
“From Little Things Big Things Grow”’ Like many volunteers who have been
involved in Doggie Rescue, a small beginning as a volunteer, often leads to a much
greater involvement and time commitment. When people get involved and see
what Monika’s philosophy is all about, an addiction of sorts begins, as your own

I'm the type of dog who loves being
friends with every single person I see
out on a walk or in my kennel and
they can't resist coming over to me
when I show them my shiny puppy

shelter environment I can get quite
anxious around dogs and sometimes
feel insecure. When I'm not around
the shelter with other dogs
continuously barking I am much
calmer and super responsive on

interesting smells but will be right
back at your side if you call my

I really want to be able to make
some doggie friends which is why I
need a home where my forever

fear of other dogs with lots of training

FEATURE Article ADOPT FIG ...& HER TOY PIGLET By Mirjana Maric DR Volunteer
Playful, affectionate, friendly
and full of energy are words I
would use to describe my My
number one girl Fig. Fig came
to us shortly after having pups.
For weeks she would carry a
toy pig around as if it were her Girl
pup. She soon earned the
nickname “Figlet”. My adoration
for this sweet girl continues to
grow each day .
Fig!
We enjoy our offsite trips, Fig
loves to run around and is
friendly with other dogs, she
loves the car and makes for a
great co-pilot. Fig is the best
company and will greet anyone
she sees with her signature
bottom wiggle and infectious
personality. Fig is also child
friendly and has featured in our
kids corner with Kayla.
Fig does have a prey drive
when it comes to small
creatures. Being on leash
makes her easy to manage,
she is very responsive when
distracted. Fig knows basic
commands and has a good
recall.

IN F OC US PAWSOME PAPI B y Adriana Zanchetta (volunteer)
Hi Everyone,
Chris and Sasha’s mum here! As some of you are aware, I am a sucker for the
older doggies, so when I met pawesome Papi I fell in love immediately. He was
in such bad shape when he first came to DR with multiple masses (some have
since been removed) and sore paws. Despite all of this, he arrived with the most
beautiful smile and just wanted to give everyone a big sloppy kiss.
I met Papi on his first day at the shelter and had the pleasure of putting him to bed
in his night kennel that evening. He was sore and unsure of his new surroundings,
so we spent a good 45 minutes cuddling in his soft bed. I rubbed his chest and
belly, as he lay upside down next to me, snoring, with his big head squished up
against my leg – he couldn’t get close enough to me, bless!

A crooked little tail wagging furiously and big
expressive eyes looking right at me just begging me
for some attention. That’s always the first thing I notice
each and every time I see Peyton, or Pey Pey as I call
her. Since the day she arrived at Monika’s she has just
wanted to be loved. Looking past her strong exterior, I
knew she was someone I just had to walk.
The first time I walked her I got to experience a sweet
shy girl who just wanted to feel safe. With super soft
velvet like fur on her head she loved a pat and never
showed any sign of aggression towards me. She is
reactive towards other dogs and some large trucks, but it
appears to be out of fear rather than aggression and has
reduced with time since she arrived at DoggieRescue.
With some more training and a stress-free environment
I’m sure that her reactiveness could be reduced even
more. She loves to sniff and will often drop her front legs
to the ground to get even closer to the action and stop
me moving her until she has had her fill of whatever
smell must be investigated.
“Since the day she arrived at Monika’s
Peyton has just wanted to be loved.”
When I get her away from the shelter, or down in the
freedom park, she just wants to sit with me and cuddle
and give me kisses, she just loves sitting by my side
under the shade of a tree and relaxing. She doesn’t
need a long walk, just some time out in the world to
feel free and smell everything that piques her interest.
