• Feline VALENTINE’S FEATURE DOUBLE THE BENEFITS….

Loving Pairs –

why TW0

kitties are

better than

ONE!

There are many well-known joys 1. & 2.
and health benefits for having a
fur-child in your family… and if Why not consider taking a bonded pair of cats or kittens?
you have two then the benefits Like the beautiful pair Pinocchio & Jiminy, two bonded brothers!
are doubled!

Some of the benefits that you can generally expect
include:

Old fridge magnet saying: • You get twice the amount of purrs and cuddles

Cats are like potato chips, which have been proven to have therapeutic

• A bonded pair are very comfortable in each

other’s company and you do not need to provide
them with as much attention as a single kitty –
very helpful when they are active kittens as play-
time can be extensive ;)

• They are less likely to get anxious or stressed if

there are scary incidents such as thunderstorms
or new people arrive, they tend to watch how the
other kitty reacts to set a tone of behaviour

• They are less likely to get lonely or up to

destructive behaviour when you are not there, ie
the other “partner” provides a level of confidence
and stability

• You get to save two lives rather than just one!

Some bonded pairs are best friends forever (BFF), they are literally
inseparable and may get anxious when they do not know where their
partner is.

However, not all pairs of kitties are best friends though they will still provide the
above benefits without cuddling together all day long.

It is generally easier gaining two cats as a “bonded pair” from a rescue shelter
as you will be able to see for yourself the behaviour as described by the
rescuers before adopting.

• With older kitties their personalities will be Annabel & Astro (back page) are bonded
and would make a lovely pair...
well formed and should only subtly further
develop over time with you and your family.

• With kittens from the same litter, they will

generally be bonded, however their
personalities will develop greatly over the
first year, and while they may be very close
as little kittens, it is possible they will
become separate characters and will
develop different interests, and then spend
more time apart when they are older.

It is lovely to see two kitties curled up together, 3. & 4.
but don’t worry if your two are not that close…
remember they are also very much emotionally
tied to yourself and your family and friends.
You will all provide the loving and comforting
home together.

Sutherland Shire Pound is "no kill". That
means that they do not kill animals for
space reasons. It also means that one more
cat in is one more cat in. They don't have
the option of reducing numbers by killing
impounded animals (as some other pounds
do). At the moment they are fuller than full.

A SPECIAL PLEA FROM SUTHERLAND SHIRE COUNCIL ANIMAL SHELTER

“ We pride ourselves on being a fantastic no kill shelter running in the Sutherland Shire but at the moment we
are struggling big time with the huge influx of cats and kittens to our facility. We are desperately calling out for
some help. We comfortably have room for just over 30 cats in our cattery, at current we have 110 cats and
kittens in the pound. Due to being a no kill shelter we rarely get the help of rescue organisations, which we do
understand, they’re busy saving the tens of thousands of lives that are facing death row. However this puts us
in a huge predicament as we have literally run out of room to house anymore cats.”

“What greater gift than

the love of a cat.”

Charles Dickens

Love Cats

As we’re in Valentine’s Day month, we thought it would be a good Written by: Madeline Burton
idea to celebrate the particular joy of loving, and being loved by, a
cat. If you’re already lucky enough to share your life with one of
these amazing creatures, then we’re sure you will have seen some
of the cat facts below in action. If you are someone who is thinking
about sharing your life with a cat companion, then adopting a cat
will reward you in ways that may surprise you.

If I said you had a beautiful
body ….

Imp: 214 As the song goes, “if I said you had a beautiful body
8wks-12wks would you hold it against me?” Many cats would answer
Male with a resounding yes. Cats will rub against you to mark
you as being an important and very meaningful part of
their world. It is both a greeting and a mark of
approval. In the wild, after a long day hunting, cats will
often greet each other by rubbing against each other. So,
your cat could well be celebrating your successful return

from a day at the office with a rub against your legs.

Blacktown What’s love got to do with it

Animal Holding

Facility There is a good reason that oxytocin is sometimes called

CLICK HERE the love hormone as it is not only critical to mother-infant

bonding but increases our ability to feel empathy, trust,

generosity and even helps us to feel that bit more

romantic. The great news is that it works just as well with

animals, so that when we stroke a cat not only do we get

a rush of oxytocin but so do they. No one knows the

importance of touch more than a cat. However, most cats do like you to wait for an invitation to pet or

pat. This is particularly so around their sensitive stomach area but I’m sure we can all understand that..

What’s mew pussycat?

Purring is something that generates an enormous amount of research and debate. That’s because
there is a lot more to that lovable vibration than we might think. Cats will purr when anxious or hungry
as it seems to help relax and soothe them. Amazingly, investigation has also shown that the
particular frequency of a cat’s purr could promote tissue healing and bone regeneration. No wonder
they have the reputation for having nine lives.

But as any cat owner knows, cats will purr when they are feeling happy and to show their loved ones
that they are happy to have them around. Whatever the reason, purring is probably an indication we
should stay close and be ready to respond to a request for a belly-rub.

The language of love

Many researchers note that cats almost never meow to each other. This leads us to believe that it may
well be a behaviour cats have invented only for the purpose of communicating with humans. Research
has also shown that cats tailor their ‘meow talk’ to their particular owners. Another reason to spend as
much time as possible with your cat so you can keep developing your secret language.

This could also mean that all that talk about cats being inscrutable, could really be more about us than
them. It’s not that they’re not talking, it’s that we’re not listening.

The power

of love Imp:323

All this research and all the “SAFRON”
wonderful stories from cat
lovers around the world show 1-3yrs Calico Female
that cats have both the capacity
and desire to show and receive Blacktown Animal Holding Facility CLICK HERE
love from their people. This
makes the thousands of healthy
and trusting companion cats
that are abandoned each year
such an appalling tragedy.

Sadly, owners who do not feel strong levels of attachment to their cats are more likely to surrender them
or not take the all-important steps to ensure the wellbeing of their cat and the wider cat community such
as desexing. Our experience tells us that we need to work on our relationships with other people to
make them as successful as possible and our relationships with our cats are no different.

Here’s a few suggestions for building on that very special bond:

• Why not try a purr yourself? Purring is a very relaxing activity and even if you do not get a meow
in return it should make you feel less stressed.

• While a quick wink is often a sign of appreciation for a treat, a belly rub or a toy, the ultimate in cat
eye contact is the slow blink where your cat slowly closes and opens both its eyes. Try a slow
blink at your cat when they are being affectionate.

• By inviting your cat to sit close to you or on your lap you are encouraging trust and respect. Your
feline friend will often knead its bed, blanket or even its owner before relaxing. Make sure you have
something between their paws and your lap if you are worried about those claws.

• To maximise the bond between you and your cat keep them indoors. Not only will this give
both of you the opportunity to love and learn about each other but you will keep your cat safe from
the many dangers that the outdoors presents.

ADOPT DON’T SHOP. Please take a look at the wonderful cats that are waiting
for someone to love throughout this magazine, many of whom still waiting in
pounds. Even if you already have a cat maybe you are in a position to double the
love and bring another cat into your home.

WE MET

IN LOVE

MIRAMAS Dear Readers,
Imp: 0014
I was abandoned, which is very, very scary.
In the pound with many strange cats, loud
noises, new people I wanted to hide away.
Then I was put in a cage with Ethan…
So strong, so handsome, my protector.

I knew we were perfect for each other. We are
both tabby cats, we appear very friendly with
other cats and we looked into each others
eyes like a married couple that have always
lived together.

We spend our days laying in bed together,
I feel safe with Ethan, he loves to care for me.
We are hoping someone will see us BOTH
and adopt us together but our situation is
dire and if we must be separated to save
our lives, then we must part.

These photos were taken days apart but it
shows that we are always together.
