1: Measure their Food
‘Eating better’ is often at the top of everyone’s resolution
list and the same should be made for our pets! Part of
this diet change involves paying close attention to how
much food you give them. Most owners ‘eyeball’ their
pet’s daily food intake, resulting in overfeeding and
weight gain. Instead, use a measuring cup to ensure Keba Shepherd x 9yrs

5: Give them a Good Groom
Regular brushing and grooming remove excess fur
from the coat, reducing the amount you find on your
clothes and furniture. It also helps distribute oils from
the skin to the fur, maintaining the health and shine of
their coat
6: Update Their Tags
Many pet owners forget to keep their pet’s identification
tags up to date. If any of your contact information
has changed since the last time you had your pet
vaccinated or registered, you ought to update their tags
and microchip information. It is the best way to ensure
their safe return home in the event they go missing
7: Get smart travelling with your dog
When it comes to travelling with your pet––whether it is
in the car, on a plane, or just a hike in the wilderness––
safety is the most important factor to keep in mind

2: Teach a New Trick
Make your pet’s mental health and overall behaviour a
priority. Teaching your pet a new trick can be great for
stimulating their brain and keeping them young at heart
3: Start a Pet Savings Fund
As our pets age, their medical needs can become more
complex and can result in higher costs associated with
medical care. Putting aside a reasonable amount of
money per month will ensure that you never have to
compromise when it comes to getting your pet the best
care possible, or invest in appropriate pet insurance

9 : Clear Out Old Toys
Just as we often declutter our homes of old clothes,
toys, and junk in the New Year, our pets need the
same service. Stop holding on to old, destroyed,
germ-filled pet toys and replace them with new,
exciting, and stimulating ones.
10: Try a New Activity
Just as we often get bored with predictable daily
routines, and so do our pets! Try something new with
your pet in the coming year. Choose a new activity
that you can do together, like swimming or hiking.

12: Visit the Vet
Perhaps, one of the most important resolutions for
every pet owner to make this year, is to take your pet to
the vet at least once a year. As much as we think we
know what is best for our pet, there can be underlying
conditions going on that only your veterinary staff is
able to diagnose.

As the old year passes and the new year begins, I

There was no Facebook or social media outlets and I
had just one foster carer, Marianne, who could only take
a small dog or two.
This day I had sent her out to a western pound that no

rang me when she arrived home. “I have taken six dogs”
she told me, “all small and very rehomeable, they were I am not sure if it was God whispering in my ear or just

with Bear?!”. It’s as if Life tends to push in a certain direction and particular
events have a certain gravity that inevitably paints a certain picture all of its
own. The picture that I see is of a beautiful Bear that has joined our family
and adjusted with ease and grace into our daily routines. He’s a smart boy
and he has made a very easy transition to fit with our family and our life and Catching up with our January
at the same time adding his own cheeky dynamics of his own! 2020 cover boy bear.
It just happened that Naja (my partner) had cautiously bathed Bear on his
arrival at the shelter (in 2017) from the pound (as he was technically a wild
dog that had not been handled much in the past). He had lived outside as a
guard dog in his previous home with his girlfriend (Koda). He was not easy to
handle and just the simple task of putting on a lead or a harness was a scary
endeavour. But after a lot of gentle bonding and getting to know Sir Bear he
became Naja’s absolute favourite dog at the shelter!
The time that we saw him adopted to his previous home, I knew
somehow he would eventually be living with us! It was only a matter of
time. When Bear was returned to the shelter it was like he came knocking at
our door with a second chance; not often is one spared a second chance and
thus it only became clearer what we needed to do even if it took us a while to
realise it. We started by first taking Bear on outings with our dogs Drake
(small Jack Russell x Foxy) and Bundy (Foxy x Chihuahua now deceased)
so that he could have some time away from the shelter. We were able to
walk them together peacefully and thus followed many fun-filled days of
doggie outings! Although Bundy was a little old lady she had no problems
telling Bear off with a growl and nip of his heels if he got too close! Bear
would always ignore this or respectfully remove himself. Naturally this
progressed to us considering fostering Bear so we tested to see how it would
work out by taking Bear home a number of times. Once we were sure (about
what we already knew deep inside) we took the plunge and adopted Bear!
Bear with Bundy & Drake
After living with Bear for some time we have discovered zoomies in a split second! We never tire of his silly side,
not only is he regal and beautiful (we often get his calm and seriousness makes you crave his attention.
complimented on his looks by people when we are out) I am impressed at how Bear is able to ignore Drake
but his silly side has been coming out. He never angers when he has his grumpy old boy Jack Russell moments;
when I give his soft fluffy tail a good yank and his a hot temper combined with rocket fuel and a tiny stature

Breezy is one of the dogs I thought
would be adopted in a heartbeat
but due to his reactiveness it's
taken a bit longer than what I
expected. Throughout the time he
has been at DoggieRescue with
loads of training and confidence

as he used to be and has now
become a more relaxed dog who is
willing to make lots of new friends.
Breezy would suit a strong active

do the same in return.

A typical walk with Bowie “In loving memory of Lucky!” Kevin Lynch
You hear him first, like a steam engine approaching as the
kennel hand is enthusiastically dragged behind as he exits
full pelt. His greeting is super friendly. And when he
realises his walk will begin with a car ride he heads full-pelt
for the open car door, leaping with surprising agility straight
into the back seat. Then turns and there it is, the familiar
goofy grin.
He sits patiently as you fasten him in. Then rolls around
riotously as you drive along. Checking the long-haired rug
for any treats that a previous occupant might have mislaid.
Although impatient to be out when you arrive at the
destination, he still lies patiently as you remove the tether,
providing copious sloppy kisses as he waits, then
disembarks with perhaps a little less elegance. After that,
it’s game on. He loves water based zoomies, or tummy
tobogganing down grassy slopes, sometimes with a barrel
roll thrown in!
Bowie, who is aged approximately two, is a jaunty white
and brindle Bulldog/Staffie cross. Everything about him
reflects his cheeky, good nature. He doesn’t react to cars,
and is generally okay with dogs, unless they are in his
face. But he definitely prefers female companions.
He can pull, and he’s a strong boy. You can tell by his
chunky stature. But he is also happy to walk on a loose
lead, obeying instructions, and just enjoying the chase
after tempting smells. He also loves to lie beside you on
the grass snuggling, or climbing onto your lap snuggling
affectionately. Sometimes he is just settled. So happy.
“ You hear the word goofball a lot when it comes to dogs like Staffies and Bowie is certainly a card carrying
member of the goofball society. But he is also super-sweet, whip smart, and so loving and affectionate.

and reactivity and for his own joy – how to play.
JANUARY 2022 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 29
Once a relationship was built, we began to work
on his response to being touched, previously just
touching his paw would result in mouthing. It is
important to remember he is young and
uncomfortable, he never wanted to hurt me he Now listen
was just nervous and didn’t like to be touched. We closely Bucky
slowly worked on accepting a gentle pat, a chin
scratch and moved on to being able to touch him
along his back and down his legs. His marker word
is “yes” so when he responds appropriately to
touching, he hears his marker and gets a reward,
using high value treats we slowly worked through
being able to handle him.
When Bucky arrived, he was difficult to walk if he
didn’t have a handler he trusted, he would lie down
which would tempt the uninitiated to pull on his
harness or leash. Even a gentle pull could result in
him lunging and mouthing the handler. However,
when he trusts his handler and understands what’s
expected of him this behaviour lessens. He is
capable of reengaging with his walker which helps
with his impulse control, this prevents the lying
down and refusing to move. Every time Bucky looks
at his handler on a walk he is marked with “yes”
and receives a treat, these check ins help with his
confidence. He now has some on leash recall, we
use a long leash and our Freedom Park. Giving him
that little bit of freedom and knowing he has earned
it assists with him learning to be calm. Bucky will need a rescue experienced owner who
understands that not all dogs have had easy starts, he

was little (accidentally I’m sure) that it was cute that
he lay down on walks, jumped on people, was over
the top in his response to toys and play allowed him
to learn that behaviour was ok.
Finally, the piece I wanted to work on for his own
joy was learning to play. He had to learn a few
cues along the way but now he can enjoy
structured play, he has learnt “Get It” “Let Go”
“Sit” and “Wait – Get It”. The cues “Sit” “Wait” allow
him to remain calm and prevent a constant rise in
his arousal around the toys. Seeing him get real Nathan Arneuad,

Thank you again and again for saving me so that I could get a wonderful

September 2011 magazine. I celebrated my 10 year adoption anniversary
on 30 September 2021. I am almost a teenager, turning 13 on 1 January
2022! I have had many fun adventures in the last 10 years, travelling up
and down the east coast and visiting doggie friends and playing on the
beach. In the last two years I have been diagnosed with Cushing's Disease
and in April this year had my gall bladder removed. I was a bucket head for
a couple of weeks, hehehe! Mum reckons we have paid for the vet's new

I am still a healthy and happy boy and hope that lots more DR doggies find
