FROM MY DESK By Monika Biernacki

Dear Readers,

Sweet Athena introduces our Cat section with her Santa beard and
favourite toy. All the cats have written letters to Santa – so very
individual and special. We catch up with our tripod Hiccup, who
was called Bruce whilst with us and Levi our FIV+ long term
resident, now called Nugget who found a home shortly after last
Christmas. It is so satisfying to know there are people out there
who can see past some physical defects.

Antonette’s version of ‘A Christmas Tail’ had me in stitches with her
vivid descriptions of what really can happen at Christmas. I could
relate to them all! OMG so funny but with a serious undertone!

Monika Toffee, our new Lop bun, introduces our Rabbit section with his
with Taz wish for more kale! Tricia compiles a list of things bunnies wish for
at Christmas. Some are very inexpensive and quite easy to make!
Take a peek.

“ I want to thank you all for your care of our animals and
wish you all a safe and happy Christmas. Thank you all for
your support and kindness throughout the year.”

HICCUP DECK THE HALLS WITH

( AKA BRUCE ) & FAMILY CATNIP MOUSIES...
Hi Everyone,

I have settled into family life beautifully and even have a new name.
I have been called ‘Hiccup’, after a character in the movie “How To
Train Your Dragon”. (In the movie Hiccup lost his leg in an accident
just like me!). I spend my days sleeping on someone’s bed (I’m not
fussy which one) and at night I join the family to play or watch TV or
just hang out. I don’t seem to know I have a missing leg and can
easily jump up on chairs and up onto the table if no one is watching.

My most favourite thing is a big belly rub. I hop under their feet and Fa La La
roll onto the ground stretched out as far as I can asking for some- La La La La
one to scratch my tummy. I also love my scratching post and have 1. La…LA!
the most beautiful loud purr ( so I have been told ). My new family
love me very much and look forward to my being a part of their
family for many years to come. Merry Christmas from Hiccup XXX WRECK THE TREE AND
BLAME THE DOGGIES...

Mum, Can I have a cat for Christmas?
No you can have turkey like everyone else!

What do you call a cat on the beach at Christmas?
Sandy Claus.

How many cats can you put into an empty Christmas
box? Only one. After that, the box isn't empty.

What do cats like to eat on a hot Christmas day?
A mice-cream cone!

A Christmas Tail
Antonette’s Version

So it’s your first Christmas with your new kitten
Duchess and you didn’t know that pine trees can be
and friends...
lethal to a cat. You put up the Christmas tree
and the cat helps. Christmas- tree ornaments are
rolling and being chased by kitty, tinsel is getting
caught in her claws and mouth, glitter is falling onto
her coat and she gets busy grooming. That makes
her thirsty so she drinks the pine-water that the tree
is sitting in and after you’ve cleaned up the vomit
and tried to brush the glitter out of her coat, you
notice the flea poo, find a flea, run for the Capstar
tablets and then what do you do?

1. Pick up the cat and cradle her in the crook of your left arm.
2. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth
and gently apply pressure to cheeks while your partner holds the
pill and pops it into the cat’s open mouth, telling him or her at the
same time to avoid those sharp incisors.
3. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow (or so you think).
4. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind the tree.
5. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.
6. Retrieve cat from on top of lounge room cupboard, and throw
soggy pill away.
7. Take new pill from foil wrap, partner cradles cat in left arm holding
rear paws tightly with left hand.
8. You force her jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right
forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.
9. Retrieve pill from the dog’s bowl and cat from the kitty litter tray.

13. Chase the cat around the Christmas tree that falls over onto the dining room table shattering the new
porcelain turkey dish and spilling the bowl of red poinsettias.
14. Make note to buy polish for the scratch on the table, buy another turkey platter and more flowers.
15. Carefully sweep shattered Christmas tree lights and decorations and porcelain off the carpet. Vacuum.
16. Get another tablet from the wrapper.
17. Wrap cat in large towel and get partner and mother to hold cat down. Put pill in the end of a drinking straw,
force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw. Oops – you gulped instead.
18. Check label to make sure the pill is not harmful to humans. Drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply
band-aids to partner's hands and forearm and mother’s finger and remove blood from carpet with cold water
and soap.
19. Retrieve cat from under your daughter’s bed
after arguing with partner that “it’s me or
the cat” is not an option at Christmas
nor is swapping the cat for another dog
at Monika’s.
20. Console your five-year old son who is
still crying over the fallen Christmas tree,
broken lights and decorations and most
importantly, broken presents.
21. Notice that the cat has started to
convulse.
22. Go to the emergency vet only to
discover the cat has swallowed tinsel
and it has to be surgically removed.
23. Upon paying the vet bill realize that
you have to cancel the January beach

ALL JOKES ASIDE….

• Pine trees are toxic for cats because
they may cause liver damage and can be
fatal. If you must have a live tree choose
a fir or spruce but regularly dispose of
any stray needles – no matter the tree
type – because they're sharp and may be
dangerous to your kitty's internal organs.

• Tinsel strands are difficult to chew but
easy to swallow and get “stuck”- under
the tongue, balled up within the stomach,
or strung out in the intestinal tract. Cats “ Tommy”
can vomit for several days and become
lethargic and unable to keep even water
down if the tinsel gets hung up anywhere
along the way. If it’s not vomited up it will
have to be surgically removed.

• Poinsettias are known for their
mild toxicity to cats but holly and
mistletoe are more dangerous. Don’t
have toxic plants in the house.

• Electric string lights on a tree are the
most tempting decoration because they
sparkle. If your cat tries to play with, or “ So, please keep your cats safe this Christmas and have
chew on, electrical cords she could end a good one. May 2021 be a better year for us all.”
up getting burned or electrocuted. Antonette

“ ATHENA”

I’m Athena and called after the Olympian Goddess of the same name
not only because of my beauty but because I’m special. I have allergies
and need medication and a special diet to keep them under control in a
quiet, stress-free home with no other animals nor children. 2020 has
been a horrible year for me. I was adopted in April and even though I
travel quietly, was happy in my new home, affectionate and loving, my
adopter had family issues and returned me to Monika’s in June. I’m so
sad. Can you give me my Christmas wish of a new home and I promise
I’ll be good always. Love, Athena.

FROM FOREVER…. Written by: Nugget aka Levi

On the cover of DoggieRescue Magazines Christmas Edition 2019 kitty Levi posed
beautifully with the caption “ NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS, A PET IS FOR LIFE!”
Levi was a long term cat who had been homeless for most of her life due to FIV+
prejudice. One of a pair of kittens abandoned her brother Logan had found a wonderful
home but Levi still had to meet that special family who would love her unconditionally.
Levi did not find a home for Christmas but shortly afterwards Levi found the home she
had been waiting so long for. This Christmas finds her loved and cherished.

Dear Monika,

Levi ( now called Nugget ) is truly at home now and
she’s the happiest, most loyal and loving cat we
could’ve wished for. At meal times (and when given a
treat), she will only eat after she’s given us a big, wet “ This is the closest ‘ Christmas
“thank you” kiss on the chin; she always knows when photo’ we could manage to take,
her dad is coming home, running to the front door to as Nugget would not stop trying
greet him. She’s a very unique kitty, full of quirks and to play with the bow!” Dani
is constantly making us laugh, especially with her
sleeping poses.

Nugget had to have most of her teeth extracted a
couple of months ago, probably because the natural
bacteria in her mouth combined with her weaker
immune system caused damage to her teeth, but
she is now the happiest we’ve ever seen her, as she
might have been feeling a lot of discomfort before the
procedure (she never showed it though, being the
forever grateful and sweet little Nugget she is). This
was the only time we remembered she is FIV
positive, as she is otherwise incredibly healthy and
happy. Nugget brings us so much joy and we are so
grateful she waited all those years for us.

“ We’d like to thank you Monika, and your
amazing team, for the incredible work you do and
for having brought Nugget into our lives. This will
be the first of many happy Christmases with our
little princess!” Dani and Dan

On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me
Twelve bunnies hopping, eleven guineas pigging,
Ten buns a leaping, nine noses sniffling, eight cardboard boxes,
Seven bales of hay, six tails a waggin', five guinea squeaks,
Four wooden blocks, three bunny thumps,
Compiled by Tricia Curran
Two rabbit kisses and a fur-ever family!
Hello and a Merry Christmas! I have put together a list of simple gifts, many of them
which can be homemade. So if you are looking for some
I know every bunny is busy making a wish list to send to
Santa Claus but..what about the homeless bunnies at fun and affordable gifts to get your own rabbits for
DoggieRescue? Well they have made up a wish list too Christmas, based on what Monika's rescue rabbits love -
in the hope that Santa and their fur-ever parents are below are some great ideas. But for the homeless buns
reading this. So what do bunnies wish for? at DoggieRescue the best gift of all is...YOU!
• Clean cardboard boxes - Rabbits love to jump in and out of
these. You can cut out holes for doors and windows. Be sure
to remove any tape / plastic, and make sure there's not ink
they can ingest as they'll love to chew it!
• Play tunnels - Rabbits love to hide out in tunnels and run
through them, just like they would do in the wild. At Monika's
we've bought cat play tunnels before and the rabbits were so
happy to use them!
• Teach and treat puzzle toy - these toys allow you to hide
treats and make the rabbits work for their food. They love to
solve problems just like us, so this toy is very rewarding for
them! And keeps them busy for some time!
• Rabbit safe wooden blocks - most pet stores have these,
and buns will love to chew them, plus they have the added
bonus of keeping their teeth healthy (especially because
their teeth continue growing throughout their lifetime!).
• Rabbit safe jingly bell toys - Monika's rabbits love when you
roll a jingly toy their way, they just love the sound it makes
(they get so curious!)! They'll even roll them back to you or
move them around and play with them on their own.

“ There are many fun, inexpensive toys you can give your
rabbit for Christmas that will make them happy! Merry
Christmas from all the wonderful buns at Monika’s!!” Tricia
