FROM MY DESK
‘LIFE INSTEAD OF DEATH’ - A NO KILL SHELTER
By Monika Biernacki OAM

Dear Readers,
Monika is
Our Easter magazine is here and our pictured with
carefree trio Wendy, Peter Pan and Arrow (now
Tinkerbelle are running around trying adopted)
to find all the Easter eggs they can –
well they do look like glittery balls to
Jack Russells! They are all certainly
having a lot of fun and there is more
about the hunt on P20.

This month Corinne talks about the
commitment needed to take in a
homeless dog as we feature our dogs
in their bunny attire and enticing us to
think about adding to the family this
Easter. She gives us a checklist to
consider and ensure your head rules
over your heart. Look at poor Dasher
for example. He was born at Doggie
Rescue and now is back as a
teenager.
Alex is helping me write the editorial this month ( pictured with me
above ). This gorgeous mature Lab X is such a stunner! He has read
some lovely articles written by some of our volunteers: Adriana is
showcasing Maddox a little funny husky bunny ( see pictured at left )
who is just full of cheekiness. Janelle has chosen another husky, Fox,
to talk about. He was such a downtrodden scared boy when he came
that he only was comfortable around small breed dogs and now look
how he has blossomed. Emily features Yankee, one of our long termers
who needs some confidence boosting and exposure to new things.

One big aspect of our work is getting the pound dogs to our vet clinic
and shelter as quickly as possible. We are very grateful for these people
who give up their time, pay their own fuel and tolls just to rescue a life.
This month we feature volunteer Payel and she shares what being a
driver has meant to her.

On page 23 we continue a 2 Part Series on child safety around dogs,
particularly unknown dogs. This is such an important topic that every
family should be aware of. Also Corinne has added an interesting article
on the benefits of having a dog versus a cat. She has drawn out some
key factors to help with your decisions.

For Easter Janelle shares her thoughts about volunteering and her
experiences since joining us. Hopefully they might entice you to give
it a try!

Hello everyone, I've been volunteering at Monika's DoggieRescue for 6 years now,
2 – 3 days a week in a variety of roles including; harnessing, dog walking,
enrichment and kennel hand duties. I love spending time at the shelter and find it
extremely enjoyable and rewarding. It will be my pleasure to regularly tell you about
some of the beautiful dogs patiently waiting for their forever homes.

Fox’s Courageous Journey

BY JANELLE HOLLIS

This month I’d like to tell you about a brave little boy of that traumatic time. Understandably he was very
called Fox. He’s a Siberian Husky cross and about 3 timid and stressed when he came to DoggieRescue.

I’ve been taking Fox out for
regular walks and really see
the difference in him. Initially
when I would go into his day
yard to take him for a walk he
would hide and shy away from
the lead. Now he will often
come forward to greet me. He
is still not overjoyed at getting
his harness on, but will sit still
while the harness is put on
and adjusted. He then trots
happily out for his walk. He
often spins and bunny hops in
his excitement.

He is still a bit anxious in
crowded places, so we go a
quiet way out of the shelter to
avoid the bustle. He really
enjoys all the new smells
along the walk and we try and
go a little further each time.
It’s lovely to see this beautiful
boy enjoying his walk.

When he returns to his day
yard with his other husky
friends, he almost struts back
inside with his little chest
puffed out while the others
sniff him over. He seems so
proud of himself for going on
an adventure in that big scary
world. He's survived to tell
the tale! It really lifts his
confidence and spirits.

When Fox is relaxed and
comfortable, he enjoys some

Fox has come a long way, but s ll has a way to go. He will need an experienced person who is
very pa ent and gentle and willing to take things slowly. He is shy, so they will need to meet

SPOTLIGHT ON THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR ‘FREEDOM DRIVERS’
VOLUNTEERS

Driving

RAMSEY

By PAYEL CHOUDHURY

The day started like any other,
with me scrolling through my
FB feed. I have been following
Monika’s ever since I first saw them
at Pet Barn Alexandria, where they
used to visit every weekend. I was
not much of a dog person in those
days, but still I had immense
admiration for the selfless souls who
dedicate their life to volunteering. I
think we even walked one of the
dogs, sweet little soul she was. (We
were just not ready for that kind of
commitment at that time.)
“ I am ever grateful to Monika’s for the opportunity, and will
always remember Ramsey and our short, sweet drive.”

So, among the countless FB posts, the appeal for two freedom drives caught
my attention, along with two pairs of innocent eyes staring at me. On the
spur of a moment, I made a decision to pick Ramsey up from Blacktown
Pound and take him to the vet at Paramatta.

As the day dawned, my hesitation increased. I wasn’t sure if I made the right
decision, almost up until I parked in front of the animal holding facility. To be
honest, the atmosphere is far from cheerful. It doesn’t give you any warm
feeling and the air is heavy with dejection and sadness. Ramsey looked far
more friendly than I imagined, when he trotted out to meet me. As we were Cattle x
walking out, one of the volunteers, a young girl, came running out to meet Rottweiler
him. I could sense how hard it is was for her to bid him goodbye. In the car 4yrs 27kgs
Ramsey sniffed around for a while, then quickly settled down. It was a calm Male
drive all the way to the vet. As I neared the vet, I had this realisation that I
would never see this cute face again. It was a bittersweet feeling that CLICK
probably comes with all volunteering experiences working with animals. HERE
TO MEET
Finding time amidst our busy schedules and never ending chores is difficult, RAMSEY
but not impossible. A couple of hours a fortnight or even a month can help
save the lives of these innocent souls. It’s just a matter of taking the first
step, and then everything falls into place. And the warm feeling you end up
getting, is something you cannot put into words.

THEIR STORY: Peter Pan, Wendy and Tinkerbelle came from the pound from the same household. None were
desexed and Wendy had very recently had pups. Peter Pan is very protective of his girls and they are always seen
napping together in the one bed. They are used to eating together. They are all very affectionate and easy to handle
and it would be a happy ending to their story for them to find a home together as their bond is strong. This little

When your pets and your children
get accustomed to playing nicely
with one another, a child’s

to other animals as well. They may
think that every dog or cat will play
just like their own at home. This
won’t always be the case, however,
so it’s good to teach kids about
safety around pets they don’t
know.

Here are some helpful guidelines for interacting with other people’s pets and dogs, in particular:

• Never try to pet or play with an unattended animal, even if it
runs up to you and seems friendly.
• If a pet is with an owner, it is okay to ask permission to pet
the animal, but make sure the owner says yes first.
• Never pet a dog or any other animal through a fence,
because it might act in defence of the territory.
• Do not approach any animal with babies. Mothers are known
to be ferocious in defence of their young.
• If an unknown dog runs up to you, just stand very still and
let it examine you; do not immediately reach out to it or run
away. These actions could make the dog excited or

Tell –tale Signs that a CAT is best for you!

CATS love you, on their terms. If you have
limited indoor space, work long hours and a busy
lifestyle then perhaps a cat is more suited to your
environment. Cats are happy to entertain themselves
during the day while you work, especially if they have
another feline companion. Adopting two cats together,
especially if they are already bonded, is a win, win
situation for everyone.

Cats make you laugh with their antics, make great bed
warmers and snugglers. Some cats adapt to walking
on a lead in a safe environment. An ideal situation for
a cat is inside but with safe outside access eg.cattery.

Just like dogs cats love to play with toys and the
variety is endless. Ping pong balls and even a simple
cardboard box can provide endless hours of

FOR EVERYONE WHO HAS THOUGHT OF VOLUNTEERING...
VOLUNTEER IN FOCUS

WRITTEN BY : Dougie, another very
JANELLE HOLLIS special favourite, not
only of mine, but
Hello Readers, everyone's.

Recently I have been helping our Editor
Corinne with articles for the magazine on
different dogs. It seems ironic because I have
always loved the magazine and it was actually
the magazine that took me to Monika's in the
first place.

I picked up a copy at my local Vet back in
March 2017 and saw an article titled 'Retirees
we need you'. I rang straight away and
started as a harnessing and customer service
volunteer within a week. Since then I have
started collecting all the magazines (except
I'm missing Dec 2018 and June 2020) and
have always read them from cover to cover.
I sometimes look back over the past issues to
remember all the dogs. It's a shame it's no
longer printed in hard copy, but that is one of
the reasons I'm so keen to get the E-Mag
out there and seen by more people. It can
change lives for the dogs, and us humans! People sometimes say to me that it’s sad when the dogs
sometimes take so long to find a loving family. I do
understand but …Monika and everyone at DoggieRescue wants
so much for all the dogs. It's strange in a way that actually being
a Volunteer at the shelter helps because it's such a happy place!
There's so much love there and hopefully the dogs feel it. The
dogs love having all the people around to give them lots of love
and attention (and treats!) as well as taking them out for
enjoyable walks.

I know it's not the same as having their own family and home, but
I'm sure many of the people feel the same as I do and love these
dogs dearly. When I feel down (which is usually when I'm away
from the shelter) I always try and focus on how lucky the dogs are
that Monika saved them, and just try and bring as much love and
happiness as possible to their lives while they are there waiting
for their forever families to find them. Reading articles like Piper’s
postcard also helps (see p34).

Tabitha ( Tabby ) one of my very “ Volunteering at DoggieRescue is a huge part of my life,
special favourites who sadly passed and my heart. I just love all the dogs so much…”
away in June 2021 from cancer.

Vale Goodbye, sweet

man. We will always
“ Leo” remember you…
Monika

Leo left us last Thursday after only a
short period of being really unwell.
Leo came to us in mid 2019 as 7yo,
as a pretty difficult dog. With time,
perseverance and love he learned to
trust the people who cared for him
and he loved affection and attention,
but you always needed to respect his
boundaries. Leo started to have
difficulties with his hind legs and his
right eye seemed to close up a bit.
From x rays we soon learned that he
had an aggressive carcinoma in the
skull that would not be slowed down
and it was painful. Our vets kept him
comfortable and pain free as possible
so we could spend time with him
before our good-bye.

Leo taught me never to wear open
shoes in his presence but over time
he became such an obedient cuddly
boy. He made such a long journey
with us and became so affectionate
and loving.

A few of his special friends were
there to say good-bye. He was
already pretty sleepy so he drifted
off peacefully. He was spoilt with a
special outing with Martha to
Parramatta Park that morning where
he could steal bread left for the birds
and ducks. It was his first outing using
a lead. He tolerated it so well provided
there was no pressure on the lead.
That was his last achievement. A “ A li le boy who was once lost in the end truly found a

RESCUE ONLY EVER THOUGHT ABOUT ADOPTING A ‘FEARFUL DOG’?

NYX BREED: SHAR PEI X STRANGERS SCARE ME
AGE: 3 YRS WEIGHT:16.3KGS
Many people adopt a rescue dog
because they want to give that dog a
second chance to have a better life.
To show a dog who has come from a
home environment where it was not
loved, or cared for, that there is a
different life to be lived.

It is a fact that most rescue dogs come
with a little baggage. Many have not
had training, they can be hand shy or
guard their food. Some are have been
isolated and are not socialized with
other dogs. Sadly DoggieRescue does
have a few dogs, whether through
abuse or just total neglect, that are
scared of humans, especially strangers.

As Editor, I especially love to highlight
not the easy to adopt dogs that find
homes quickly but the dogs who
through no fault of their own have fallen
through the cracks due to their sad
experiences in the past. One such dog
is Nyx. She needs a special family and
for her they have been very hard to find.

“ I could not have wished for a more gentle, sweet lady to join Simba and myself!”

Hello Piper Fans!
Piper is going great. We live on a 25 acre property
with kangaroos, foxes, rabbits and lots of ducks. She
goes absolutely crazy for the kangaroos and would
like to chase them if she had the chance. She has
access inside and out via the doggy door but generally
prefers inside in the air conditioning at the moment.
We all walk every morning and most afternoons.
She sleeps on my bed at night and various couches
during the day.

Piper is becoming more and more confident on our
walks around the local playing fields and doesn't seem
scared of any thing we come across. Doesn't like
cyclists much though.
