Dear Readers

This issue is crammed with lots of good

some of our special dogs and kitties that we
hope you will pay attention to. Cover boy
Bubbles (p9) has patiently waited a long time
to find his forever home. He is so ready, and
has been such a good boy. He has written a
special letter to Santa.

Another sweet longer termer, featured with
me is Gunther -- a petite boy who is a bit
nervous of loud sounds like drills and
hammers and wants to be the only dog in the
household. Willow (p10) is another “loner”
who wants to have her humans to herself
and in return bestow all her love and
devotion. You would not be disappointed!

We still have some low shedding dogs, but

How to Avoid a Nightmare...

Roland Briefrel, a long time supporter With 2016 rapidly coming to a close and Christmas just around the

animals who have no voice. enjoying some of the action too. But the festive season also presents a
world of hidden dangers to our four-legged friends, from toxic foods to
dangerous seasonal plants. To safeguard your dog this Christmas,
Doggie Rescue offers you the following information to ensure you are in
the know when it comes to keeping your pet safe.

Mistletoe: Ingestion of European mistletoe
berries may result in an upset stomach. The
American species of the plant is more dangerous.

Christmas trees: A mild stomach upset can be
caused if dogs eat pine needles, but the sharp
tips can cause more damage internally.

Ivy: The ivy that tends to be used in wreaths and
decorations is Hedera helix (not Toxicodendron
radicans, the American poison ivy). But the
Hedera species can still cause a tummy upset
when ingested. Where there is significant or
prolonged skin contact, Hedera species can also
cause both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis.

Leftovers :If there is any food left over at Christmas, be careful to dispose of it well and keep
it out of the reach of your four-legged friend. Not only may the food include ingredients toxic to
dogs, mould in leftovers (including yoghurt, bread and cheese) can produce toxins that cause rapid
onset convulsions in dogs.

Artificial sweeteners: A sugar-free sweetener called xylitol is often found in the sweets we
consume over Christmas, as well as chewing gums, mouthwashes, toothpastes and
supplements. It is poisonous to dogs and, although the amounts in different products vary,
event one to two pieces of chewing gum can cause toxic effects in a small dog. It can
induce the release of insulin in the body, resulting in low blood sugar and sometimes
liver damage. Signs of poisoning can be rapid or delayed, and include vomiting,
lethargy, convulsions and comas. The prognosis is good if the low blood sugar is
treated quickly.

OTHER CHRISTMAS HAZARDS TO BE AWARE OF…...

• Silica gel: Silica gel comes in small sachets and is often found in the packaging of
new shoes, handbags or electrical equipment which we unwrap over Christmas.

• Wrapping or crepe paper: Ingestion may cause staining in the mouth which
may look alarming, but the toxicity is considered to be low. But if your dog
eats a large amount, it may cause an obstruction to the stomach.

• Candles: Although candles, even scented ones, are considered to be low
toxicity, ingestion could potentially block the intestine or cause choking.

• Potpourri: When eaten, potpourri can cause significant gastrointestinal
effects in dogs. These may last several days even after the material has
passed through the gut.

• Cigarettes: Nicotine is toxic to dogs, and cigarette butts are
especially dangerous - so it's important not to leave any ashtrays in
reach of dogs over Christmas, or dropped on the floor where they
may eat them. Nicotine replacement patches and e-cigarette refills
can also pose a risk. Symptoms of poisoning include vomiting,
excess saliva and hypertension.

Christmas decorations: Decorations made of plastic, paper or foil
are of low toxicity although may obstruct the stomach. Glass
decorations could pose a risk if chewed or swallowed.

adopted life. Her coat has grown back completely found a family who love her endlessly. Thank you

her & helping us find each other.” Ali
Her winning personality shines through and she's
so sweet she has won over non-dog people. River
loves people especially their feet! She makes a
habit out of seeking out people sitting with their
legs out in front of them as their feet are the
perfect height for her to stand over and have her
belly rubbed! River loves going for walks, hikes
and visiting her pals at the dog park. She loves
having play dates with Rusty (ex DR Elf). Her
favourite games are tug-o-war and ball. River
has loved going to obedience training and has
made us all very proud of her progression!

River loves when people come home or to visit so
much that she brings them a toy so they can play
with her straight away. River loves nothing more
than curling up on my bed. She also loves car
rides and "singing" to us along the way. River
has changed the dynamic of our family for the
better and life hasn't been the same since she
came into our lives.

• FEATURE : PRECIOUS GIFTS “ Ian Archer ”

IAN - OUR GIFT OF LOVE.

By Kathryn Archer

Our lovely little trooper Ian, still very missed. He died on 28th July
2015, so this will be our second Christmas without him. We first
saw him at the DoggieRescue shop on Victoria Road when we
were looking for a companion for Muffin. He was sitting by himself
in a corner looking sad and lonely even though there were lots of
other dogs and people around. We decided he was THE ONE!

We had many great times together ( and adventures ) with our
beloved Ian. He moved with us from Sydney to Hobart with a 9
month round Australia trip in between in a motor home. He loved
waking up to a new beach or park every day and nothing much
stressed him. He loved his food and would turn little twirls as
you put his bowl down in excitement. He and Muffin got on so
well, Ian kept her calm and they were company for each other
when we were out.

It was so dreadfully sad when he died but thankfully it was very
quick as he had a stroke overnight at 15 years old and died in
my arms without any struggle. I have such lovely photos of him
and I put the best together in a little printed hardback book to
remember him by. It is so nice to pick it up and flick though to
remember all the wonderful times we had together. Ian was
cremated and his ashes are in the garden. So sadly missed
and remembered with love. Kathryn, Paul and Muffin

HOW BECKY AND HER BAND OF VOLUNTEERS RAISED OVER $5,300 TO HELP THE DOGGIES...

Hi, I'm Becky and I am a volunteer
feeder at Doggie Rescue. Each year a few
supporters and I get together for our annual
fundraiser to help the DR doggies. This
year we had lovely weather and with the
added attractions of a sausage sizzle, hand
made cards, Nutrimetics and a brand new
gift stall we raised over $4,600.The cakes
and coffee stall raising over $600.Earlier in
June we had a charity dinner which raised
$700, so in total we raised over $5,300.

“There was great community support from
the young, the old and even their dogs!
Monika’s dedicated work with Doggie
Rescue is truly admired and appreciated.
I wanted to thank all those who worked so
hard to make this fundraiser a success
and who gave so much of their time and
energy for this wonderful cause.” Becky
