• • • Feline FACTS

Who doesn’t
love a tabby?

By Deb Rouse Cats with a tabby pattern are common in domestic homes and in the
wild. The tabby pattern consists of two colours: darker hairs which
provide the pattern on a lighter background (agouti hair).

All tabby cats share common markings on their face known as a “tabby mask” which
includes the classic “M” shape and dark lines from their eyes going back across the
head and outwards to the sides of their face.

Tabby patterns include:

• Striped or Mackerel – the latter due to the fishbone look (a rather
unflattering term for some stunning looking cats!)

• Blotched or Marble – where the stripes are rounded with circles of
darker colours, somewhat similar to pools of water.

• Spotted – the darker stripes are broken into small rounded shapes,
which can look exotic.

• Ticked – the dark hairs are in very small patches throughout the
agouti hairs – this is only seen rarely in some breeds, and the cat
likely retains the tabby mask markings on its face.

In the wild even the big cats are tabbies! A tiger has a striped tabby
pattern, a lion is a ticked pattern, and a leopard has a spotted tabby pattern.

A cat may have a mix of tabby and other colours:

• A Torbie is a tortoiseshell patterned cat with a mix of tabby markings. The gorgeous Feta above is
waiting for her forever home
• A Calico cat has three ‘colours” including white, grey/black and red,
with a possible tabby pattern in the latter two. Sponsor: Lesley Candsell

Even a cat with a seemingly single solid colour is likely to have an
underlying tabby patter – next time you see a photo of a jaguar/
panther or a black domestic cat, take a look very closely to see the
tabby pattern as the light reflects off its coat. Only true white
coloured cats contain no tabby patterns.

So with so many tabbies in the world,
who doesn’t love a tabby?

Renting with pets: tenants
deserve more respect

By Alana Schetzer

I cried the first night I spent in my own apartment. It wasn’t that I missed
my mum or my familiar bedroom – I did – but what I missed the most was
my dog, Quin. I’ve had a dog since I was born. Being without a furry friend
is as foreign to me as smearing Vegemite on fruit toast – also, a bit weird.

So when I left home, I was forced to leave behind my beloved Quin – a
golden labrador with better manners than almost every person I’ve met,
including myself.

My Quin passed away last year and I now own a cat, Elliot. As a lifelong
dog person, this fills me with deep shame, but trust me, she’s cool. I’ve
already taught her to sit on command. I adopted her because I live in an
apartment and thought the landlord would be fine with a small, quiet
creature napping on the couch. Not so. My landlord said no, with no
reason given.

The day my mum took Elliot to her home to live, I ugly-cried, like Kim
Kardashian.

When you’re a renter, you’re often at the mercy of your landlord. Hot water
stopped working? Better hope your landlord is decent, otherwise you’ll be
bathing in Antarctic-temperature water for a while. Likewise, in Victoria,
you can’t have a pet without permission. And when permission is denied,
it’s a blow for your status as an adult. I can be trusted to live and take care
of someone else’s property, but I can’t have a pet? Some landlords are
worried about pets causing damage, but surely that concern can be
negotiated? Maybe the 50kg dog should stay outside; the cats can have
their claws clipped.

And if a pet does cause damage, isn’t that what the bond is for?

DID YOU KNOW? In 2013-2014 (latest statistics) 17,237 CATS/KITTENS were killed in pounds. Out of those
thousands of lives lost I wonder how many were surrendered by families who were moving and unable to find
rental accommodation where they could keep their 4 legged family member?
