10 MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E- MAGAZINE F E AT U R EDID YOU KNOW? Mother cats purr while giving birth to their babies and it is believed they do this to self-relax. A Mother’s Day Thought Things to Consider before Adopting It’s Mothers’ Day month again and before you think of giving Mum a cat for a gift, consider the environment in which you live, the family’s expectations and the cost. The Environment and Your Expectaflons: Bringing a rescue cat into your home is a deeply rewarding experience, but it requires thoughtful preparation and realistic expectations. Unlike kittens raised in predictable environments, rescue cats mayhave experienced neglect, abandonment, or significant change. Understanding this helps set both you and your new companion up for success. First, consider the environment. Create a quiet, safe room where your cat can settle during the first few days or weeks. This space should include food and water bowls, a litter tray placed away from feeding areas, a comfortable bed, and hiding spots. Cats feel securewhen they can retreat, so cardboard boxes or covered beds are invaluable. Keep noise levels low and limit visitors initially to reduce stress. Fancy giving me a cat for Mother’s Day

1. MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E MAGAZINE 11 By Antonette DiorioCAT ADOPTION OFFICER Antonette has her Certificate II in Animal Care and Certificate III in Captive Animals. If you have other pets, introductions must be gradual. Scent swapping — rubbing a cloth on each animal and placing it near the other — can help them adjust before face-to-face meetings. Supervised, short introductions are best, always allowing escape routes and never forcing interaction. Be prepared for behavioural challenges. Some rescue cats may hide constantly, refuse food at first, or avoid contact. Others may display defensive behaviours such as hissing or swatting. Patience is essential. Allow the cat to approach you on their terms, using gentle voices and slow movements. Establishing routine feeding times and consistent daily rhythms helps build trust. Litter box issues can arise due to stress or previous living conditions. Ensure trays are kept clean and placed in quiet areas. Scratching furniture is another common concern; provide appropriate scratching posts or hessian mats and reward their use. Health considerations are equally important. Schedule a veterinary check-up soon after adoption and follow guidance on vaccinations, parasite treatment and neutering if needed (All Monika’s Cats are de-sexed). The Cost Apart from the Adoption Fee, Carry Case, ScratchingPosts, Toys, Litter Trays and the constant expense of Kitty Litter, as well as at- least-Annual Vet Fees for Vaccinations and Check-Ups and Dental Work, the biggest weekly cost is Food. In an August 2024 survey, Canstar Blue asked 1,387 cat and dog owners how much they spend on their pet’s food each month. They found that dog owners spend the most, forking out $90 on average each month, while cat owners aren’t far behind at $84 per month. The majority of those surveyed (80% of cat owners and 79% of dog owners) believe the price of their regular pet food is increasing but this hasn’t led to any significant changes in the way people feed their pets. Approximately 33% of pet owners in Australia have acat – that’s 5.3 million pet cats across the country – and while the saying ‘mans’ best friend’ typically applies to dogs, the Canstar survey found cat owners feel just as strongly about their feline friends. 50% of cat owners say their cat is their best friend (compared to 57% of dog owners), and 77% say their cat is like a family member to them. And like dog owners, Australian cat owners are making sacrifices to feed their pets. In fact, more cat owners than dog owners are cutting back on their own food in order to feed their pet. Of those surveyed, 33% have reducedtheir grocery bill so they can feed their pet their preferred brand of food, while 40% said they’ve cut back on non-essential expenditure to afford their cat’s food. Did I cost too much?

12 MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E- MAGAZINE Here are some other sta s cs Canstar gathered about cat owners in their 2024 survey. • 77% say their pet is like a family member. • 29% say the increased cost of living has impacted how they feed their pet\/s. • 24% have cut back on essential usage\/expenditures, such as, energy and fuel, to afford their preferred cat food. • 27% have bought fewer or stopped buying extras for their pet\/s e.g., new toys, coats, beds. • 52% have purchased cheaper brands or types of food for their pets. ADOPTING A CAT IS NOT AN IMPULSE PURCHASE • 9% have started making their own pet food. Money-saving ps for pet ownership Here are some handy tips on how to save money on your pet food each month. • Buy bulk: if you’re finding that you’re buying small amounts of pet food often, consider buying in bulk. Compare the price per portion before you purchase. Generally, the price per portion decreases the bigger the quantity. You can find pet food in bulk from places such as Catch.com.au and Big W and Pet Circle and Swaggles, among others. • Keep an eye out for sales: 45% of cat owners and 40% of dog owners told Canstar that they usually purchase pet food when it’s on special. If you regularly check the website of your supermarket or pet store where you buy your pet’s food, you can stock up when it goes on sale. • Join a rewards program or subscription service: does your pet store or supermarket have a rewards program that you haven’t joined? You might be able to take advantage of special deals and savings just by signing up. At some pet food stores, you can even shave a percentage off your first order or when you subscribe to regular deliveries. And Petbarn and Petstock have a “Member’s Price”, cheaper than the price non-members pay. • Make your own pet food: 9% of cat owners and 18% of dog owners have started making their own pet food rather than purchasing it. If you’re serious about saving, it might be worthwhile to make your pet’s food at home. Just make sure you consult your vet or veterinary nutritionist first as your pet may not be suitable for a homemade diet. Above all, remember that trust takes me. With pa ence, empathy, and a stable environment, most rescue cats blossom into affec onate, loyal companions. The journey may require perseverance, but the bond you build will be truly special.

MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E-MAGAZINE 23 1. “ YOU’VE HEARD OF THE PHRASE...BREEDING LIKE RABBITS…” A single mother rabbit (doe) can produce between 30 and 80+ offspring per year, depending on the breed and environment. Rabbits are highly prolific, with gestation lasting only 28–31 days, and they can conceive again immediately after giving birth, allowing for multiple litters of 4–12 kits throughout the year. Key Facts on Rabbit Breeding • Litter Size: Averages 4–12 kits, but can sometimes exceed 12. • Litters per Year: 3-5 litters are common, but they are capable of up to 12 litters in a single year. • Rapid Reproduction: Does can get pregnant again within hours of giving birth. Breeding Season: While wild rabbits (like cottontails) generally breed in warmer months, domestic rabbits can breed year-round, says the House Rabbit Society. While one doe can produce dozens of babies, in the wild, not all survive due to predators and environmental factors.
