Helping a fairy Princess find
her happily ever after!
Written by: Anne Fussell
“Your dog looks like a fairy princess,” the little girl said softly, her
friends on either side of her nodding agreement in that serious way
that little girls sometimes do. Sierra and I were on one of the beautiful
wooded fire trails she loves and had met a class of children from the
local primary school about to have an open-air singing class. They
listened intently as, at the invitation of a teacher, I explained about
her life at Monika’s DoggieRescue. “So you are going to find her a
new family?” another of the little girls said solemnly, before smiling
happily when I told her we were really, really trying.
Most people, when they meet Sierra, a Border Collie cross
about 5 years old, comment on how lovely she is. “Cute” is
the often used word. And she is. She is also incredibly
affectionate, delighted to cuddle up close and snuggle, and
loves to meet new people. She’s always very gentle. Happy
to have the odd treat but mostly just happy to be with you.
She travels in my car, sedately sitting in the rear seat,
looking out of the window, taking in the world passing by.
She is a lovely walking companion, usually all
business, nose down following an unseen trail, or
scanning the distance looking for anything out of the
ordinary. Like the day we met a goat, and then five of
it’s friends arrived. Sierra was stunned, not quite sure
whether to join the herd or round them up. If I stop and
lean down to tie my shoelace, I get a soft nuzzle, just
checking all is well. As we scramble up a particularly
steep rocky slope, she will stop a couple of times
looking back at me, puffing behind her, anxiously.

Sierra would be a perfect addition, to the right family.
She needs someone who will spend time getting to
know her, to get beyond the cuteness and really
understand what she needs to flourish as the wonderful,
clever dog she is. One habit is particularly hard for
me to clamp down on, because it’s so endearing. When
she is particularly happy Sierra effortlessly “stands up”
and very gently rests her paws against my chest.
“She’s giving you a hug,” the little girl on the forest
trail said when she saw Sierra do it. And whilst I try to
dissuade Sierra most of the time, I have to admit, there
are occasions when I hug her right back.

It is lovely to catch up with BELLE ( aka VIXEN) a little mum who
was found abandoned very pregnant whilst still a pup herself.
Written by: SARAH COZENS
Meet Our
Sweet Belle
When Belle first arrived home, she slept for about 2
days straight. She must have been so tired from the
puppies. Belle was initially extremely timid and unsure
of us. She’s now been in her forever home for 2 months
and is thriving, learning how to be a puppy again herself.
Belle adores her brother Buddy, they are best friends for
life. She loves chasing the ball (she even brings it back!),
she loves wrestling with her brother, playing tug of war & Belle & her Dad
chewing on anything she can gets her paws on. It took a enjoy watching
little while for her to enjoy going for a walk but as long as TV together
Buddy comes too, she prances down the street just like
a reindeer! Belle is the sweetest most affectionate dog I
have ever met. Everyone that meets her falls in love &
we feel exactly the same way.

I WAS ADOPTED! Billy has gone from a HOMELESS doggie to an Instagram SUPER STAR
Hello!
I love to be patted
upside down but
most of all I like my
human’s beds!
Hi Everyone,
Life with Billy is a lot of work if I’m being honest, he’s such a crazy
boy and loves to get right in your face and play. But he’s such a
beautiful boy, he’s so sweet and cuddly. I’m so happy that we got to
bring him home, he’s definitely one of a kind and he fits right in with
us and loves Peanut (our other dog) a lot.
“ Having Billy makes things at home a
lot happier for all of us and I couldn’t
thank all the people at the shelter for
helping us with him and giving such
great tips :)” Cathy

“What a lovely
thing a rose is!”
– Arthur Conan Doyle
Miss Rose is definitely a lovely thing, she is sweet,
affectionate, clever and so eager to please. She arrived at
DoggieRescue neglected with cauliflower ears, ear infections,
skin allergies and infected nail beds. Like most DR doggies she
has had many litters of puppies in her life. She had lived a life
without love but she is making up for it now! At 9 years old Rose
deserves happily ever after for her twilight years.
Jen & Rose enjoy
some time together
MAY 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 29
Rose’s health has improved in her time with us but
most importantly her spark is back. Her eyes light up
when she sees kennel hands or volunteers she
knows, or leads and a harness as they mean walkies
time! Don’t let her age deceive you though when
she’s in the mood for a walk you’re going for a walk!
She does also enjoy a leisurely stroll with lots of sniffs
and pats. Rose loves her treats, so she’s quick to
learn and you could definitely teach this older dog
new tricks!
Rose is great with kids, as you can see her with
DR Volunteer Kayla at right, she is best suited to
those who are 12+ as despite her age she still
gets quite bouncy when excited!
She is content in her own company so could live with
full time workers, so long as you know when you
come home it’s cuddle time! Rose deserves a garden
in her home as she likes space to explore and stretch
her legs.
If Rose sounds like your perfect match please

can’t wait to meet you!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT D O G G I E R E S C U E U N L E A S H E D A N D D A N G E R O U S
WORLD MEAT
CONSUMPTION
“Everybody, sooner or later, sits down to
a banquet of consequences”
Robert Louis Stevenson
In this issue we continue an article that I compiled on available
statistics of world meat consumption and it’s consequences for
the millions of animals in the food chain. In part 2 we touch on
how important that sustainable farming has become and also
look at other options available for plant-based meats and the
many Australians who have now chosen to go meat free.
PART 2 : THE START OF CHANGE?
With unchanged eating habits, the world population could be
too big to feed itself by 2050 when we will reach a global
population of almost 10 billion people.
Have you noticed more plant-based meats in your local super-
market? Australian supermarkets have not only expanded their
ranges of vegan options, but they are now starting to include
plant-based meats... in the meat section. For people who are
not already eating plant-based meals, there is often no reason
to go into the vegetarian section at the supermarket, pick up a
product and try it. But when people go looking for mince, and
they see plant-based mince sitting right next to their usual
product, and it looks the same, and it has the same amount of
protein, with added health benefits — they will be more likely to
pick it up and try it.
1 in 3 Australians are meat-free, or, actively reducing their
meat consumption and 1 in 2 Australians are trying to cut down
on red meat. These people might not necessarily think that
the vegetarian section of the supermarket is for them. But
placing plant-based versions of familiar products where they
are likely to find them, has huge potential for animals. When
supermarkets put plant-based products in the meat section, it
is a sign not only that they know there's strong demand for these
products, but that they believe in the quality of these products
and their equivalence to meat-based options. This sends a
message to the consumer — that they can count on this product
being as good as the meat versions right next to it. Not every
person shopping for plant-based products is shopping for
themselves. Many young people decide to eat vegetarian
whilst still living at home. HANSEL & POLLY PIG LOOK AT THE MOON

“ Animals are my friends…
and I don't eat my friends.”
George Bernard Shaw
“ If we could Many vegetarians and vegans have meat-eating partners and
friends. For many vegetarians and vegans, support from family
and friends can be crucial in helping them stick to their choice and
live happy and their values. By making it easier for people to find products and
healthy lives cook plant-based for their vegetarian child, partner, or friend, may
help to create more positive conversations around plant-based
without harming eating.
others, why THE KINDEST CHOICE BECOMES THE MOST CONVENIENT
wouldn’t we? CHOICE. People are creatures of habit. Most people consider
themselves to be thoughtful and compassionate, but we all lead
” busy lives and often, convenience is the number one priority for
shoppers. We know that plant-based versions of familiar products,
such as burgers, sausages and mince, is one of the most
convenient ways for people to start out eating meat-free meals. It
means they can stick to the recipes they know and love, simply by
using the plant-based version. Putting these choices in the meat
section, makes this process even more convenient, as they do not
have to go looking for a plant-based option. In fact, this one step
makes meals like spaghetti bolognaise, burgers, tacos and more
just as convenient to make meat-free, as not.
IT WILL SPARE MORE ANIMALS. Putting a plant-based product
in the meat section will result in more sales to a wider market, and
ultimately spare more animals from being raised and killed for
meat. Ultimately this ought to be the most important thing. It is
exceedingly rare that supermarkets will put a product in two places,
so why not put it where it has the greatest benefit to animals? As
animal lovers, supporting meat-free products in the meat-section,
and thanking supermarkets who take this step, is an important way
for us all to help animals.
So, in 2021, the connection between Edgar’s Mission, world meat
consumption and the rise in availability of plant-based meats ought
to be clear. In an ever-rising world population growing meat for that
population is becoming increasingly unsustainable on a planet
enduring climate change. The introduction and growth in popularity
of plant-based meats provides a better choice, especially for factory
farmed animals and helps us all move more closely to the mission
statement at Edgar’s mission featured on the photo on the left.

MEMORIAM
WRITTEN BY:
MARGIE & PETE
MATILDA WAS
SO SPECIAL
Matilda was the sweetest little girl you could
ever have. It is fitting to honour her passing by
putting her story in the DoggieRescue Magazine.
Matilda did have the most amazing time with us.
I was logging off from searching for a new pet.
Matilda's face just popped up and we both said
‘what a beauty, let's enquire’ and the rest is
history. From the moment we saw her beautiful
face come up on that screen we fell in love with
her, before we even met.
Her memory will be with us until we meet again.
We're certain that we will. We took her to Church
once and she wandered around meeting everyone
then came and sat with us. She was so intelligent,
almost human! Everywhere we went Matilda came
with us. She was very well travelled and admired
by everyone. We travelled up to the Northern
Rivers, out west to Canowindra, Orange,
Greenthorpe, south to Batemans Bay, Nowra,
Neriga, our homes in Tarago and Queanbeyan and
beyond. Matilda loved the Christmas night drives
looking at all the bright lights, she lived it all.
A little story, there are many.... We went to Canowindra
for a football presentation where we stayed at Montrose
House, a gorgeous B&B. Matilda was welcomed with a
beautiful meal of roast chicken with baked veggies and
gravy. Well, she ate the lot. Matilda loved her fresh food.
After that she made her way into the CWA luncheon in the
large dining room where she was patted by all the ladies
and had nibblies along the way. We were finally noticed
and served afternoon tea which was shared by Matilda as
well. So spoilt!! She loved it all. Her bed was a faux fur
lined sofa would you believe. Tommy Jeffs is the best host
and like family to us.
“ A couple of photos, there are hundreds of others
but Peter and I have all our special memories of our
sweet little Matilda in our hearts forever. She is

after her and are so kind to us knowing of our loss. ”
