MARCH 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E- MAGAZINE 7 2. Elwood MEET OUR LITTLE GRAND LADY “GINA”Don’t let her expression fool you — this tiny 12-year-old queen may look like she’s judging you, but she’s really a soft, chittering, purring sweetheart. This senior girl found herself alone and in terrible condition at the pound — no place for a grand old lady! She arrived twig-thin and tired, but thanks to another save by the amazing crew at DoggieRescue - with gentle care, blood tests, good food, and a warm bed, she’s doing well. • Age: Approx. 12-13 years young • Personality: Calm, affectionate, loves company • Quirks: Trills, chitters, head-boops, instant purrs • Ideal Home: Quiet, cosy, warm, INDOORS ONLY and full of love • Health: Improving well. Gina is a dainty, gentle little soul who would love nothing more than a warm lap and a family to adore in her golden years. CLICK HERE TO MEET GINA Senior Cats – The Quiet Love Senior cats are often the ones left behind. Overlooked. Passed by. Not because they lack love — but because people fear goodbye. Yet what many don’t realise is this: older cats don’t love less — they love deeper. Their steps may slow, but their devotion grows stronger. They sleep more, ask for less, and give everything. They’ve learned how to be gentle companions, how to sit beside you without needing to be the centre of attention — just present, steady, understanding. And this part matters deeply: regardless of their colour or the length of their fur, whether they are pedigree cats or rescues from one of the many shelters overflowing with beautiful souls, every cat deserves to be loved — especially in their later years. The truth about adopting older cats Senior cats are often: • already litter trained • calmer and more predictable • incredibly grateful for stability • deeply bonded once they feel safe To love a cat until the very end is to honour every moment they gave so freely. And even after goodbye, that love stays — steady and warm — in your memory.

12 MARCH 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E- MAGAZINE FEATURE Article ST. PATRICK’S DAY LEGENDS FEATURING OUR OWN EMERALD... 14 In Ireland cats are oen depicted wearing clover, green hats, or shamrocks, symbolizing good fortune, purity, and posiffivity to coincide with the holiday’s themes of luck. MARCH 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E-MAGAZINE 15 Cat Steals Show on St Patrick’s Day On a crisp St Patrick’s Day a few years ago, amid the thrum of bodhráns and the ripple of tricolours, an unexpected marcher stole the show. As a town parade wound its way through an Irish high street, a confident tabby cat slipped from a doorway and began padding alongside the musicians. Unbothered by the noise, it wove between boots and drums, pausing occasionally to accept a scratch from laughing spectators. Phones came out, a local paper shared the clip online, and by evening the cat had become a small green-hatted celebrity. Anyone who knows Ireland’s cats wasn’t surprised. Irish cats are famously independent, shaped by generations of farmyards, fishing villages, and close-knit towns. They sit atop stone walls surveying the world, nap in shop windows, and appear uninvited but perfectly at home at community events. Their antics range from commandeering warm bar stools to following schoolchildren as if on an important errand. Joining a parade, it seems, is just another curiosity to investigate. Folklore adds an extra shimmer to these moments. While cats aren’t central figures in Irish myth, their air of mystery has long invited comparison with the Otherworld. Leprechauns, the mischievous shoemakers of legend, are said to enjoy tricks and sudden appearances—traits any cat owner will recognize. It’s easy to imagine a leprechaun’s magic brushing off on a passing feline, lending it the confidence to march on St Patrick’s Day as if it had every right to be there. In Ireland, where myth and daily life often overlap, a cat in a parade feels less like an interruption and more like tradition continuing in its own whiskered way.By Antonette DiorioCAT ADOPTION OFFICER Antonette has her Certificate II in Animal Care and Certificate III in Captive Animals. Irish joke What does a cat order at a bar on St. Paddy’s? A Whisker Sour.

16 MARCH 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E-MAGAZINE Irish joke How do cats keep law and order in Dublin?Claw enforcement.Irish joke Why are Irish cats such great comedians? They have purr-fect timing. 22 MARCH 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E- MAGAZINE GUINEA PIGS IN FOCUS GUINEA PIGS MAY BE CUTE, BUT WILL THEY SUIT?Guinea pigs are generally not recommended as \"starter pets\" for young children because they require significant, daily, and specialized care, including habitat cleaning, proper nutrition, and potential veterinary attention from exotic specialists. While gentle and affectionate, they are delicate, social animals requiring pairs, and they often live 5-8 years. ARE GUINEA PIGS STARTER PETS FOR CHILDREN? • Not Low Maintenance: They need daily cage spot-cleaning (producing many droppings) and a dietrich in fresh vegetables, hay, and vitamin C.• Need for Companionship: Guinea pigs are social and should be kept in pairs or groups, increasing the workload and cost.• Fragile Nature: They are prey animals that can be easily injured or stressed by young children; they require gentle, supervised handling.• Specialized Care: They often require an exotic veterinarian, which can be more expensive than standard pet care.• Long-Term Commitment: They have a lifespan of 5–8 years, not just a short-term, \"starter\" phase. IF YOU ARE DEFINITE ABOUT ADOPTING A GUINEA PIG, PLEASE CONSIDER ADOPTING A PAIR! In nature Guinea Pigs live in close knit colonies. They can suffer physically and mentally when housed alone. They need a companion of their own species to communicate, cuddle and play with. • If you are going to adopt a Male and a Female the male must be desexed at least 6 weeks before they are allowed to cohabitate.Key Considerations for Guinea Pigs as Pets: What do Guinea Pig Sounds Mean?
