you never ran for it – you just

Yes you were initially a foster

specific instructions to be on
your worst behaviour (sorry
Monika) – Thankfully the lady
that was looking at you realised
that we already had such a bond
– When she returned from her
walk with you she came straight
up to me and said – this is your

inside the DR Office where your

bought a dog!” So yes a very

Tail going like a windmill!!! Bark! Bark! Bark! Chippy’s going on
holidays. Paddling in the water, running and rolling on the sand,
exploring and most of all, being with my family. As Mum says..
CAN YOU GUESS? How could they have a holiday without their fur baby? Can’t wait

ADOPTION UPDATE LUKA WON EVERYONE’S HEART AT DOGGIERESCUE—WHERE IS HE NOW?
YOGA LOVING LUKA
IS MY SHADOW
By Alwyn Poole
I wanted to let everyone to know how Luka is going. I had
some medical issues and needed to get a Pacemaker
and my sister in New Zealand died of Covid 19 at the end
of April. Luka came into my/our life at the right time. He
is a delightful young man who can be a bit stubborn and
demanding at times but in a charming way. He does have
separation issues in that he howls like a Coyote when I
leave the house but has improved out of site. He has lead
aggression which have spoken to my vet about and a dog
trainer, they have given me a few tips on how to deal with
it, he is getting better, really he is only doing his job by
protecting us. He may not have been well socialized
before, the good thing is he good around kids and adults.
I had his DNA tested and it came back Cavalier King
Charles Spaniel / Maltese x Maltese / Shih Tsu.
We have a nice morning routine with a bit of Yoga, he
loves stretching particularly with ‘Down Dogs’ and
“ Luka” ‘Childs’ pose. We hope to come back to the shelter for
a visit soon. Regards, Alwyn Poole

FEATURE ANXIETY Jen & Moe chat about
INTERVIEWER: Reactivity in Dogs!
JEN BARBOUR
Moe, when you go for walks you
tend to stick to the bush tracks
and fire trails. Why is that?
Because I can be nervous of other
dogs and become very reactive
when I see them, I bark and make
that famous "Staffy Squeal" so for
me the bush tracks keep me calm
and make me comfortable. I can
sniff to my heart's content which
helps calm my mind. It's important
to remember not all dogs like other
dogs, similar to how some humans
don't like other humans. To keep
everyone comfortable we just avoid
the situation that stresses us out.
So what does reactivity look
like?
If your dog is showing any of the
following signs: Lunging/Pulling on
leash, Barking, Growling, Twirling/
Flipping they are reacting to some-
thing. Please do not ignore this
behaviour! There are two main
types of reactivity: barrier and fear
based. If your dog has barrier
frustration they will be frustrated
towards something they see as
blocking their access to whatever it
is they want, this barrier can be
anything from a window/door to the
leash you are holding. What exactly are you reactive to?
“ Fear based reactivity is common My reactivity is fear based towards other dogs, I arrived with some scars
in rescue dogs as we may have on my nose and whilst I can’t tell you where they’re from I am quite anxious
had a negative experience with about other dogs. Scars heal but the fear is still there. Because of my
dogs or humans in our past lives reactivity the kennel hands at DoggieRescue make sure I go out for walks
which affects how we respond to early in the morning or later in the afternoon when there's not so many
these triggers.” Jen people around. Or they sneak me out via the bush tracks so I don't have to
see other dogs!
NOVEMBER 2020 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 31
What's the best way to handle your reactivity?
Please don't try and push a reactive dog into
"facing its fears" you will make it worse, your dog
will then learn that you are not the safe place they
thought you were. As a dog owner you are our
guardian and we trust you to keep us safe.
I am looking for a family who has experience with
dogs like me, people who understand I'm happier
with human company and I just don't need that
dog company. Ideally I'd like a home where I can
be walked either on bush trails like this or in a
way that ensures I come into contact with the
least number of dogs possible. I really just want
a home where I can be a loved member of the
family, lots of cuddles and minimal interactions
with other dogs.
Why did I pick Moe for this article?
Moe is incredibly affectionate when given the
chance to show his true self. He is anxious so
he needs a household where someone is only
working part time hours (not just during COVID).
I think he gets overlooked a lot and I'd love to see
him find his forever home. This guy just wants to
love a family of his own. He is good with kids 12+
as he can be bouncy and mouthy when over
excited.
“Please look past the reactivity if you have
a home where this could be handled and you
have room for Moe please contact Monika.” Moe Staffy x 2yrs 21.6kgs Male Sponsor: “ This

Everyone looks at me and says: we love you
Barbara, which just proves I have taken charge of
their hearts too...
Dear Monika,
We’ve had our fabulous Barbara for nearly 18
months now and she’s amazing, such a gorgeous
little soul. When we adopted her she was called
Abbie, and she’d been found under a trailer and was
so timid. She hid under our deck and had to be
coaxed to eat for weeks, but her confidence grew
and her affection with it too. She’s so resilient. She’s
moved house with us three times, and now loves the
house we built which is our forever home. She’s had
a puppy introduced to the home and has played and
schooled and tolerated so much, but they’re as close
as anything.
But above all she’s loved us all in the family so
much, she’s such a character and a 100% snuggler.
A funny little being, we adore her.
“ Thank you for all the work you do,
and thank you for Barbara. She’s the
making of our new home.” Natalie
