2 FEBRUARY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE By Monika Biernacki OAM • from my desk LIFE INSTEAD OF DEATH - A NO-KILL SHELTER By Monika Biernacki OAM Dear Readers, This month we have delivered you a very special edition of the magazine. Not only is it for Valentine’s Day but we have focussed on some of our long-term dogs who you don’t often hear about, being shared by people who work and care for them day in and day out. The front cover pic of Dallas and Dahlia says all there is to say about love……. That gorgeous pair have come such a long way from the shutdown dogs they used to be to a pair that mingle comfortably with other dogs and enjoy time with dog walkers and carers. There are more gorgeous pics of them on P5. We celebrate 20 adoptions this month including 2 foster dogs being adopted, Jeff and Chippy. It is wonderful to see some mature dogs and some staffies in the adoption mix! Adoption of the Month a hard choice this month but has to go to Chippy, our very long term boy who finally found his special family to love ( featured photo ) In the ensuing pages some of our vollies and kennel hands talk about their favourite long-term dog and bring them in the limelight! It is lovely to be able to share with you the care and love that is bestowed onto these dogs by carers. We have some great postcards this month, from Lola and Ziggy, adopted some 18 months ago sharing a great relationship which has helped Lola get even more comfortable with the world. She even donated blood, where Ziggy was treated for cancer! What a brave girl! Pairs are awesome and we showcase Bernie and Howard as well as Jack and Jill, two pairs still waiting for their family to come along. We also introduce a new arrival, sweet nervous Cleo, such a pretty girl looking for some confidence building and love.VALENTINE’S DAY EDITION Monika sharing some ‘Husky Love’ with Autumn & Denali…

There is a beautiful poem dedicated to her. Kids want to get involved in Valentine’s Day too and what better way than to bake some doggy bikkies! p22. Antonette talks about what enjoyable things you can do with your cat for Valentine’s Day and she reminds us where this day came from historically and how its importance evolved. Corinne has featured some beautiful Valentine huskies who would love to share that special day with you. Vivien, who recently adopted Fox one of our shyer huskies, shares some intimate details of things she had cope with Fox whilst he becomes a “suburban dog”. We have had a number of postcard updates on our adopted dogs and all wishing us a happy Valentine’s Day. Jimmy’s card really strikes a chord – the change in that dog once he spent time in the country reconnecting with nature. In Up Close and Personal we have Bailey, a dog who was in our care for quite a while. What a delight to see how happy he is four years on and that he does now have a small circle of friends. This is a real success story. We always share some memories of dogs who have left their families. In a strange twist of circumstances, Teddy was readopted by a close friend when his Mum was terminally ill. This lady was present when he was originally adopted from Doggie Rescue. Some dogs pass over Rainbow Bridge before ever getting a home. Such was Alaska’s fate leaving us without much notice and no way of saving her. Corinne is introducing us to some of our new arrivals and indeed new arrival Mindy has just been adopted! There are so many sweet faces all waiting to meet you personally on Valentine’s Day. From all of us at DoggieRescue we are wishing you a happy special Valenflne’s Day, with whoever your special Valenflne is. Bailey’s a happy boy!

18 16 FEBRUARY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E- MAGAZINE WE CAT C H UP WIT H LO LA & HE R LOVE ZIG GY ADOPTION UPDATE Written by: RUSS their Dad FROM FOREVER…. We found love…. “ It has been about 18 months since Ziggy came into my life and about 12 months for Lola, following Ziggy's successful cancer removal. What started as a pallia\"ve foster for Ziggy turned into adop\"on of the sweetest bonded pair. Lola and Ziggy are living their best lives, entertaining and bringing joy to all of us. “ Russ “ Tuyen with Ziggy & Lola at Jervis Bay”
FEBRUARY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE 17 Orlando with Ken Lola is still a bit anxious but is gaining confidence. She is a total contradiction in body language. Even when crouching or backing up when she is worried that something might be going wrong her tail is always wagging. She is a very happy girl all the time. We regularly walk a lap around the block from home. In the beginning, Lola might hear the noise of a car door closing or people talking 30m up the street and she would pancake to the ground and look at me as if to say \"not 1cm further in that direction, we are going back\" and so we had to abort. During the year since adoption Lola has gained confidence and she now will complete the loop, albeit sometimes after a brief pause. She is doing so well! Lola also became a blood donor at SASH, the hospital that saved Ziggy from his terminal prognosis with cancer, 'paying it forward'. Ziggy was there as Lola's emotional support dog, relishing the pats from his old friends. Photo at right. We recently took a holiday down to Jervis Bay. Lola and Ziggy are partial to the white sand and new smells of the beaches. Lola follows Ziggy around like his shadow, and they enjoy zoomies and chasings sometimes. Their natural position on the lounge or the backyard or even piling into one bed, is to do it in contact with each other. Ziggy loves all human attention and playing tug-o-war with his rope toys. Lola still loves cut-grass and contorts herself to rub as much of it on herself as possible after the lawnmower passes a strip. Although Lola is still a bit shy with new people, she suffers from massive FOMO (fear of missing out) so she quickly comes in for the pats once she sees Ziggy enjoying the attention. • Deb Arden, in the picture on the lounge, has fostered for DoggieRescue and volunteered at the shelter sometimes, and she says “Hi” to Monika and you all!

Being a cross with Staffy in her gene pool makes her strong, sweet, and just super cool! Harlow loves watching the world go pass while sitting next to you in the grass. I’m wishing for my darling harder than ever before... that she will be loved one day & cherished forever more!
FEBRUARY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E- MAGAZINE 21 Harlow’s Valentine – Hoping 2026 Is Her Forever Love Some love stories don’t begin with fireworks. They begin with a quiet moment and stay with you...I met Harlow in 2022 as dog walking volunteer, and from that very first moment, she quietly claimed a place in my heart. An American Staffy X, about seven years old, Harlow carries a love that is steady, patient, and deeply sincere - the kind that doesn’t rush, but lasts. She has a beautiful way of slowing the world down. Her favourite moments are the simplest ones: sitting beside you in the grass, leaning in close, watching life pass by together. Trucks rolling past, horses moving quietly, people in motion - Harlow takes it all in with calm curiosity, as if reminding you that love lives in these quiet spaces. On walks, if she doesn’t agree with the direction, she’ll sit down and look up at you with that familiar expression: gentle, a little stubborn, and endlessly charming. She enjoys movement, but what she truly loves is connection: shared stillness, soft cuddles, and simply being close. Harlow adores car rides, music playing softly as she gazes out the window. Traffic lights become moments of quiet observation. She is also a true water baby - splashing, paddling, and soaking up every moment around water with absolute delight. And if there’s mud nearby, she will find it! Rolling with pure joy, wearing every speck of dirt proudly, even welcoming the hose-down afterward like part of the adventure. Like many rescue dogs, Harlow’s journey hasn’t been easy. She is strong on lead and can still be reactive past other dogs, which means she needs a rescue-experienced home - someone patient, consistent, and kind. What she offers in return is unwavering loyalty and deep affection. Every Friday afternoon, after my shift, Harlow and I spend a couple of hours together at St Ives Showground. It’s our time - a space where she feels calm, confident, and truly herself. If you feel drawn to her story, I’m always happy to introduce you to her there. And every Valentine’s Day for the past few years, I’ve been calling for Harlow’s forever home. Each year, the same wish. The same hope. This time, I’m daring to believe that 2026 will be the final call: the year someone finally chooses her! This Valentine’s Day, Harlow isn’t asking for cardsor chocolates. She’s waiting for her Gotcha Day - the day love finally comes home. Every dog deserves a love story. May this Valentine’s Day Harlow’s forever love begin. Mario From Mario Bassi, Kennel Hand

Hi Fans, It’s Valentine’s Day soon and you are going to be receiving some kisses from your bestie—but...Yukky dog breath!!!Dogs can get bad breath from plaque build-up caused by infrequent brushing, insufficient water intake, or just from the foods they eat. Well I found a recipe for some breath fresh mint doggie bikkies! Ingredients:2 1\/2 cups old-fashioned oats, 1\/2 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped 1\/2 cup fresh mint, finely chopped 1 large egg 1\/4 cup of water 3 tablespoons coconut oil (unrefined extra-virgin is best) Preheat the oven to 325° F Directions: Add oats to a blender and pulse to a flour like consistency. In a large bowl whisk together diced parsley and mint, egg, water, and oil. Add oat flour and stir to combine. Knead dough a few times then put onto a lightly floured surface. BE MY VALENTINE 24 Valentine’s Day is named after Saint Valentine, a Catholic priest who lived in Rome when the Emperor Claudius II prohibited Roman soldiers from marrying so that they could devote themselves to the city and their duties. Father Valentine began to marry these soldiers in secret Christian ceremonies and this was the beginning of his reputation for believing in the importance of love. Eventually he was found out, jailed, and executed on 14 February in the year 270. Two hundred years later, the Pope proclaimed 14 February as the Feast Day of Saint Valentine. The poet Chaucer in the Middle Ages was the first to link St Valentine with romantic love and over the centuries this has taken on many forms in different cultures: usually flowers and cards and a dinner with that special person is involved. But, not everyone has a person that Cupid has put in their paths to spend the day with on Valentine’s Day. For some, that one “person” isn’t a person at all but our purrfect little fur friend instead. They give us so much love and deserve our love in return. “A cuddle a day keeps the vet away” and for many, they are the most pawsome date you could ever ask for. In the past month, we’ve been waking up beside each other and sharing many memories, all of which wouldn’t have been possible during our shelter da$ng days...”Seriously, how would I have known that... 1) You are such a gourmet, refusing my NexGard Spectra cheese balls, meticulously picking every fragment apart and refusing every milligram that reeks of “impurities”. 2) You’d poop in the middle of a busy crossing, ignoring the “whoops” and “woahs” of chuckling passers-by. 3) You can spin like a lightning-speed canine cyclone while letting out your signature husky scream – just because you tripped over the lead and got yourself tangled. 4) You’d wake me up in the middle of the night to get me to sleep beside you, and started snoring the moment I hold your paw while I sleep on the hardwood floor. FEBRUARY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE 29 I mean, who would have guessed all that when our first encounter was you shuddering under that fence outside the shelter? To be honest, despite how I had looked that day, I was probably as scared as you. As you chose to follow that familiar scent of anxiety, I remembered talking to you about not knowing why they had given you to me when I’d only been there for less than three months. You tilted your head in confusion, but you could recognise something beyond my words. When you finally took the peaceoffering (a.k.a treat), you let me show you what peace tastes like, while you showed me what fate tastes like. Not only do we share the same birthday, but we also share the same shut-down past, the same self-loathing “patheticism”, the same fear of the present that could lead us to the unknown future. I understand: the easiest way to protect ourselves is to not have any interactions with anyone else. That void, where we don’t have to think or feel, nor to hurt or be hurt – it’s comforting. But we didn’t choose that; We chose each other. That pledge we made still holds true across past, present, and future: I'm as fearful of the world as you are, but no matter how scary things get, you have my back and I have yours, and that's all that matters. Our love is not blind devotion; it’s about growing alongside each other as partners. We are not perfect, and we recognise each other’s imperfections, and that’s okay. We don’t know what the future holds, and that’s okay too, because together, we co-create our future. Your pawprints have extended from your kennel to Camp Kedron, to Mona Vale Road, to Church Point, to Narrabeen Lakes – and now – are there any streets in Willoughby that don’t have your pawprints? There are?! Let’s go and leave our footprints there tomorrow! When we both decided to step towards each other in spite of fear, we redefined the very idea of “patheticism”. We found each other because we chose courage over cowardice, tenderness over turbulence, healing over hatred. We were pathetic, and yet we chose not to give in to fear for ourselves and for each other, and that’s what makes us fantastic. Love, Pathetic Fantastic Mrs. Fox

34 FEBRUARY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E- MAGAZINE A dogs life is counted in years, a dogs love is counted in memories. No maer how long you have, the me is never long enough I wanted to tell you about my beauful dog Teddy who was euthanised today…. Nike (DR), a one-year-old Foxy\/Chihuahua cross who had been terribly abused, was adopted from DoggieRescue by my friend Jackie. By chance I was with her on the day she adopted Teddy, his new name, and I remember DoggieRescue staff telling her that he was so emotionally shut down he might never bond with her. Jackie took Teddy home to her house at Summer Hill and over the first year she experienced many difficulties and disappointments, but gradually Teddy began to bond with her. OF A BOY CALLED “TEDDY” JAN 2013– DEC 2025Jackie decided the best thing to do would be to retire, sell up and move to a quiet retirement village on the Central Coast set in beautiful bushland. Over the next several years Jackie achieved incredible success with Teddy, he loved his new life, his new Mum, and his lovely walks around the retirement village. He was much loved by many of the residents who would wait for him on his daily walks to cuddle him and offer treats. In 2021 a cancer which Jackie had previously beaten aggressively returned and she was dead within weeks.Teddy came to live with me in Sydney. At first I worried how I could possibly give him a happy life, remembering his traumatic early life and having lost his beautiful Mum, but I needn’t have worried, all of Jackie‘s hard work had instilled confidence in Teddy, he adapted quickly, and we lived very happily together until his death on New Year’s Eve. Teddy pictured above at DoggieRescue in 2014
FEBRUARY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E- MAGAZINE 35 “ Teddy filled every day with joy and happiness and I am heartbroken at the loss of this cheeky liflle man. “ Over the years I have often remembered that day Jackie adopted Teddy from DoggieRescue, I held him in my arms in their office and never occurred to me that one day he would be mine. He was the most precious gift. I just wanted your staff and Monika to know what a fabulous life he went on to live and how much he was loved by so many. Thank you, DoggieRescue. Ann Beckett Vale Alaska “ She will stay in our hearts as a very beaufiful being who was always so gentle and happy.” Alaska came into our care Christmas 2021. She has been one of our more timid but ever so sweet huskies. Alaska always gave us this beautiful husky dance when her dinner was being served. She was always so excited and I guess she never forgot the time when she was always hungry and had to fight to get scraps. In late December she vomited some bile and looked alittle flat. At the vets as she looked dehydrated. She had a temperature, so treatment was started. We found a big tumour on the x rays. She crashed the next day and that night she left us. Dr Dee went in that last night to do an exploratory, but it was too late. The tumour had ruptured. An autopsy revealed she had a big mass wrapped around the base of the aorta and some of it had even become necrotic. No matter which way you look at it, nothing could have saved her. I am just grateful she did not suffer long. She will stay in our hearts as a very beautiful being who was always so gentle and happy.2017-2025

ADOPTION UPDATE DO YO U RE ME MB ER JI MMY (a ka B arn ey ) THE DIFFERENCE A LITTLE TIME & LOVE MAKES…. It’s two weeks today since we brought sweet little Jimmy (was Barney) into our lives so wanted to give you a quick update. He certainly was a very frightened and nervous boy but we were smitten within a few hours and could see there was a lovely, gentle dog underneath the fear. After a couple of days in the city we decided to take him to our cabin in the bush and what a huge difference that made. From the first walk along our bush tracks the tail came up and he changed from an anxious dog to a dog that was alert but engaging with his surroundings. The bush was the first place we saw him looking confident. His morning routine is breakfast then a good walk in the bush. When he comes home we are treated to some zoomies around the house and a happy bouncy play session with us and his toys. We can’t tell you how much our heart fills with joy to see him playing so happily. He is still wary if we approach him ( he will happily come to us if he wants something) and we need to approach him slowly to stop him sometimes backing away but we know that will change over time. Anyway - we just wanted to let you know that we are completely smitten with this very beautiful dog and his recovery is coming along beautifully. Socialising with other people and dogs is still a way off yet but I know we will get there together. “ Thank you to everyone at Monika’s for saving our lovely lile man and please let the foster family know that we truly appreciate everything they did to keep him safe unffil he came into our lives.” Kev, Martin & Jimmy
