DO THESE KITTENS DESERVE TO LIVE?

Another year has passed, with its joys and sorrows and as we begin a brand new year it is a time for resolutions.
Perhaps your resolution is to make more money…. or save more, to get fitter and lose weight. Many people start the
new year planning a holiday or thinking about changing jobs. Vowing to change their life for the better. My resolution
is for everyone to realize just how precious life is. Every life. Animals who come into pounds have no voice of their
own and many times their fate is decided by people who never even meet them. These kittens above are homeless
but in the loving hands of a caring veterinary practice. Forever homes will be found for these precious babies but if
they were in some pounds they would be killed because they weigh less than 600 grams.
Have you ever asked your council what their policy is In some pounds it is the weak, the frail and sick, the

SUNNY’S

SUMMER TIPS

A Guide to helping Your Pet Rabbit Cope With The Aussie Heat

Summer may be a relaxing time for us humans, going to the beach and cooling
off with ice cream but for our furry companion pet rabbits, it is not necessarily so
relaxing as they are more sensitive to heat. Rabbits do best in cooler weather and
By Vivienne Chan prefer a temperature of 12-25ºC, anything above 30ºC can cause a lot of stress,
(Pictured with Sunny a heat stroke or even death for rabbits.
Flemish Giant x bunny)
Here are our 3 best tips for keeping your pet rabbit cool and alive this summer…

1. Bring them indoors in the shade. Rabbits do better indoors all year around and
it means they're more incorporated into the household with more interaction. But by
bringing them indoors in summer, it is an instant cool down in comparison to a hutch
with a play pen outdoors or even on a covered terrace. If you are starting to sweat
outside on a 30ºC day, imagine how a furry rabbit would feel. If your home is not rabbit
proofed, you can keep them in a play pen with a food and potty station and a few toys
to keep themselves entertained until you are able to spend more time with the rabbit.

2. Tiles and frozen water bottles. A spare tile that you have leftover from
renovations or a repurposed old milk/water bottle filled with water and frozen can make a big difference for a
fluffy rabbit. Rabbits love to lie down on tiles when it's hot just like humans standing on a cool tile ground,
they can also benefit from lying next to a frozen water bottle. If you're worried about
condensation, just wrap an old towel around the drink bottle which you don't mind the
rabbit chewing on. Frozen ice packs are NOT suitable for rabbits as they can chew
through the fabric/material and if the liquid is digested it can cause big medical issues.
